I took piano lessons when I was 7 years old. We didn’t have a piano at home for me to practice on. My grandma had a piano and I’d go practice on weekends. My grandma played piano by ear and I watched her. Well when I went for my lessons I would try playing my lesson by ear! My teacher told me if I didn’t stop trying to play by ear I would never learn to play! I didn’t know what cords were, didn’t get that far. I just learned what the notes were on the piano. I proved her wrong! If I lesson to a song enough and can remember the tune and can set down and play it in the key of C. I’m learning more here from this guy than I did from her! It’s good to know the three cords to start with. I’m 82 yrs old now and still learning! Great site here.

You are absolutely right. I started learning the violin at the age of 7, according to the music not by ear, and even the four strings of the violin were never in tune. I make noise every day and annoy my neighbours. After my last music class four years later, I still don't know any basic music knowledge, I just pull the strings in the correct position according to the sheet music. And the violin became the most painful memory in my life. I'm 61 now and want to start learning the keyboard, hopefully I can keep playing at your age. I wish you health, happiness and longevity

Best tutorial ever on chords... I took lessoNs for 2 years as a child, played fur Elise and the first movement of moonlight sonata at the recitals but only ever knew how to read the treble clef. I watched my teacher play the songs and copied her until I memorized them. Never learned a chord or scale...now I'm 43 and I only can play those few songs I memorized as a child. I want to learn the right way so that I can play anything I want with or without sheetmuzic. I've watched a few videos and yours is the only one that made chords so easy to understand!!

I'm 66 and always had a piano or keyboard in the house. Took a few lessons when i was around 8-9, then again around 19-20. But I mostly taught myself by ear, learning chords. But I feel I've been stuck at the same level for years and years. People who aren't musicians hear me play and think I'm good but I know how much better I could be. I'm currently trying to decide which online course I'd like to try. I'd appreciate any suggestions for someone like me that doesn't really need an absolute beginner's course. Thanks!

I answered and said, "If I have found favor in thy sight, O Lord, show this also to thy servant: whether after death, as soon as every one of us yields up his soul, we shall be kept in rest until those times come when thou wilt renew the creation, or whether we shall be tormented at once?" 76 He answered me and said, "I will show you that also, but do not be associated with those who have shown scorn, nor number yourself among those who are tormented. 77 For you have a treasure of works laid up with the Most High; but it will not be shown to you until the last times.
78 Now, concerning death, the teaching is: When the decisive decree has gone forth from the Most High that a man shall die, as the spirit leaves the body to return again to him who gave it, first of all it adores the glory of the Most High. 79 And if it is one of those who have shown scorn and have not kept the way of the Most High, and who have despised his law, and who have hated those who fear the Most High -- 80 such spirits shall not enter into habitations, but shall immediately wander about in torments, ever grieving and sad, in seven ways.
81 The first way, because they have scorned the law of the Most High. 82 The second way, because they cannot now make a good repentance that they may live. 83 The third way, they shall see the reward laid up for those who have trusted the covenants of the Most High. 84 The fourth way, they shall consider the torment laid up for themselves in the last days. 85 The fifth way, they shall see how the habitations of the others are guarded by angels in profound quiet. 86 The sixth way, they shall see how some of them will pass over into torments. 87 The seventh way, which is worse than all the ways that have been mentioned, because they shall utterly waste away in confusion and be consumed with shame, and shall wither with fear at seeing the glory of the Most High before whom they sinned while they were alive, and before whom they are to be judged in the last times.
88 "Now this is the order of those who have kept the ways of the Most High, when they shall be separated from their mortal body. 89 During the time that they lived in it, they laboriously served the Most High, and withstood danger every hour, that they might keep the law of the Lawgiver perfectly. 90 Therefore this is the teaching concerning them: 91 First of all, they shall see with great joy the glory of him who receives them, for they shall have rest in seven orders.
    92 The first order, because they have striven with great effort to overcome the evil thought which was formed with them, that it might not lead them astray from life into death. 93 The second order, because they see the perplexity in which the souls of the unrighteous wander, and the punishment that awaits them. 94 The third order, they see the witness which he who formed them bears concerning them, that while they were alive they kept the law which was given them in trust. 95 The fourth order, they understand the rest which they now enjoy, being gathered into their chambers and guarded by angels in profound quiet, and the glory which awaits them in the last days. 96 The fifth order, they rejoice that they have now escaped what is corruptible, and shall inherit what is to come;
and besides they see the straits and toil from which they have been delivered, and the spacious liberty which they are to receive and enjoy in immortality. 97 The sixth order, when it is shown to them how their face is to shine like the sun, and how they are to be made like the light of the stars, being incorruptible from then on. 98 The seventh order, which is greater than all that have been mentioned, because they shall rejoice with boldness, and shall be confident without confusion, and shall be glad without fear, for they hasten to behold the face of him whom they served in life and from whom they are to receive their reward when glorified.
99 This is the order of the souls of the righteous, as henceforth is announced; and the aforesaid are the ways of torment which those who would not give heed shall suffer hereafter." 100 I answered and said, "Will time therefore be given to the souls, after they have been separated from the bodies, to see what you have described to me?" 101 He said to me, "They shall have freedom for seven days, so that during these seven days they may see the things of which you have been told, and afterwards they shall be gathered in their habitations."
102 I answered and said, "If I have found favor in thy sight, show further to me, thy servant, whether on the day of judgment the righteous will be able to intercede for the unrighteous or to entreat the Most High for them, 103 fathers for sons or sons for parents, brothers for brothers, relatives for their kinsmen, or friends for those who are most dear." 104 He answered me and said, "Since you have found favor in my sight, I will show you this also. The day of judgment is decisive and displays to all the seal of truth. Just as now a father does not send his son, or a son his father, or a master his servant, or a friend his dearest friend, to be ill or sleep or eat or be healed in his stead, 105 so no one shall ever pray for another on that day, neither shall any one lay a burden on another; for then every one shall bear his own righteousness and unrighteousness." .....2 Esdras 7:75

I made flash cards in high school of every chord type including altered chords. I'd have one pile of each chord and shuffle those and turn them over and play them instantly. I'd have another pile of cards of ALL of the possible chords (There are hundreds) mixed up and would do the same, turn them over and play them without pause. Then when I saw chord charts I had internalized every possible chord combination through my own flash chord training.

That's a very nice thing! That's probably very efficient, and goes along what's been said in this video, this is a way of practicing them. Actually, following the same idea I think I'll be doing a small Python script that does that automatically with text-to-speech which automatically says out loud a chord every 2 seconds or something like that.
I guess this approach can be quite efficient for internalizing many things when learning piano, by actually showing random things and doing them. That comes along smart ways to memorize them like this video does.

For me, what worked was just looking up songs on Ultimate Guitar. In retrospect I started off with a lot of songs with chords in the key of C (totally not on purpose) and would sometimes discover a song with a flat or sharp that in the moment I would think ehhh it doesn't seem too hard which would over time open me up to songs with even more sharps/flats. I was at an age where I would just play songs on repeat so memorizing wasn't an issue. If this video seems confusing, I would try devoting a ton of energy to one chord song a week and always try to find a song with at least one new chord. This would be an organic way of learning but I think it also depends on your learning style!

My piano teacher who taught me chords taught me this building all major chords with the pattern of starting at the root note, then moving 4 half steps to the next note, then 3 half steps to the last note of the chord. He taught the minor as root, then 3 half steps, then 4 half steps. This works out to be exactly what you taught. He also showed me the pattern for building 6ths, 7ths, augmented, diminished, etc. As he added more chord types, I would have me practice them in songs. He was a jazz pianist and was awesome. I wish I would have had him as my teacher for longer. I still have my list of how to build the chords 35 years later!

Been learning piano from Simply Piano, and the first thing I noticed after watching your video is that it's teaching you to play C, F, A instead of F, A, C, for the F chord, and for the G chord it teaches is B, D, G instead of G, B, D as in your video.
From what little music theory I've learned so far I understand that this is still correct, but it's interesting to me that Simply is teaching the chords that way instead of the way you're showing to me in the video which seems more intuitive (I was originally thinking that the "root" note was always the leftmost one when I first learned of the concept) so I'm not sure why they're teaching the cords that way. Maybe they're trying to get you used to the idea of stretching to reach notes, maybe they're trying to keep your hand as close to C as possible, I don't know.

    • @patlina59
      @patlina59 Год назад

Simply Piano are showing you chords for a beginners song and not showing you " Root " basic song chords.. They are using inversions. This is for a couple of reasons. 1; Less 'complete' movement of your right hand... keeping the hand in the one position, as much as possible.. only changing one or two fingers.. 2; same chord but using a different 'voicing'.. ie. bass note.. or slash chord eg: F/C = 2nd inversion of the F chord..
      You are spot on with your F & G chords in root position.. F chord = F, A, C .. G chord = G, B, D.... 1st , 3rd, 5th.
      F chord -- root position -- F, A, C. 1st inversion -- A, C, F. 2nd inversion -- C, F, A.
      G chord -- root position -- G, B, D. 1st inversion -- B, D, G. 2nd inversion -- D, G, B.
ALL of the other chords follow the same sequence whether major or minor, dim, aug. or other..
Jazz chords may have a 3rd inversion using the 7th note of the scale ( chord ) please don't go there..
If we all just used the root chord for every song on the planet.. music would be so BORING....
Inversions add a little spice of life in music as does so many many other things..
I hope you will try the inversions one note at a time and listen to the difference..
I think you will like.. Cheers..

Awesome video. And you could probably take it further? Notice that each group of chords he demonstrates - C F and G (white white white) for example - follows the classic I / IV / V chord progression used in hundreds of popular songs. So after you've mastered what he's showing in the video, you should be able to play La Bamba or Twist and Shout in all 12 keys (starting with the keys of C (WWW), A (WBW) and Ab (BWB)). Then the logical sequel(s) to this video might be to do the whole thing again (a) using first inversions throughout; (b) using second inversions throughout; (c) starting in root position or 1st inversion or 2nd inversion for the I chord, and then fingering the easiest and closest inversions of the IV and V chords. By then you can do it all eyes closed!

Timestamp 8:42 is what finally did it for me. After spending a lot of time on other channel's videos and websites without them helping at all (like learning all the "oreo" chords [black white black] or the "hamburgers" [white black white], etc.), once I did the practicing suggested in this video, it instantly clicked. And I mean instant. Suddenly I could play all the major keys without really thinking about it. In my next piano lesson, my teacher said "D major" and I immediately found the chord, whereas before it was such a struggle. Thank you!

Fun video. Not everyone who learns to play is taught theory properly, and once you can read music then you can get away with knowing very little theory at all. Modern compositional software is so good that you hardly even need to know theory to even write music (once again, if you can read it).
I think one thing worth emphasizing is that beginners shouldn't be scared of the black keys...Sure, it's easier when you're in your first few weeks and just trying to remember ABCDEFGA, but once you're at the point of trying to play songs, transposing everything to (or searching for scores transposed to) C Major or A Minor is counterproductive. You play the white keys differently when you have black ones in the song and it's good to get used to that as soon as possible, and it's actually easier to play more complex stuff when there are more black keys. F Minor is delightful for arpeggios, it has 4 flat notes in the key and the white notes are the 1-5-7 so chances are that you're playing black keys 3/4 of the time. I shudder to think what songs in that key would be like to play if you transposed them to A Minor...

7:24 / 11:40 I've learned that the two white keys in the middle are actually half notes and you have to jump over one of them to get a full note in either direction. Even though they sound continuous if you just play the white notes. (Maybe I'm tone deaf to white continuous)? I don't know..

Great lesson... carrying on you can flatten both the 3rd and 5th to make diminished.
    1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
    C D E F G A B C
    C Eb Gb = C diminished
To diminish or take away .
    I see a pattern of chords 135, 34, 43
34 meaning 3 half steps at first then 4 half steps
or 43 4 half steps then 3half steps.
    135
    351
    513
Flipping the order to invert or inversions of the same chord.
Someone pointed out you dont play 135 and 135 both hands it sounds redundant and 1st semester.
But if you change them up 135 left hand and 34 or 43. right hand suddenly it starts to sound better .
The person illustrated it stating Paul McCartney did this and you instantly hear it in Beatles songs.
Same chord but inverted. same notes but different order..
The inversions slow me to a snails pace but I think its a matter of working them out and cherry picking the ones that grab you so you know by trying each type which sounds best to your ear.. So its your favorite choices of what combinations to play either hand.
The person illustrated it by trying to play the same chords both hands then changing it up and instantly you hear it become more musical or the best combinations leap out too you so you notate ok those pair up and those do also
and if you know them that good then you can screw chords up on purpose to make people laugh.
Cause by then your gonna know the FUGLY ONES and its fun to use them knowing full well for the expressions you will get.
Like Yosemite Sam showing Bugs Bunny how to play the tune right....
we should all be able to play that wrong also or know what the wrong note was or be damned to hell for eternity...

    How I memorise?
Find the perfect fifth, like from C to G,
Put your middle finger in the middle, if it feels like it can’t go further up naturally, then its major and vice versa.
The more you play with them, the more you memorise.
    Also scales.

Videos a bit to fast to follow with a keyboard, if I were to slow down the speed I wouldnt be able to learn to recognize these chords things. Will likely needmto repeat this vid again cuz its close to done and now im confused again. Though this is a good video, the struggle is real.
