Unfortunately every college is not like IITs. We have to maintain certain % of attendance and also have study the whole subject from NPTEL and RUclips.
Sir, I'm from IIT KGP Mechanical Department. I saw you during the induction programme, but didn't get a chance to talk. I hope you will take some classes in the future, so we can interact with you.
#Learnings:- Forget everything(all other works etc.) when you're in class & study with focus at that time while the Professor is teaching. With this one can maintain a decent GPA. For excellent GPA, of course Self study is reqd. Thank you for this precious advice sir.
Nice video Professor. Not many of your calibre, will be willing to revisit the past and share these things in public forum. Your students are indeed blessed, to study under ur tutelage. You are not only a great teacher, but also a great mentor.
Thank you sir for the advice. I am 2nd year UG in IITB and honestly just like you my 3rd sem was so loaded, I am also the alumni secretary of dept so it makes it even busier. And now I realised I messed up my studies , I didn't attend classes and even missed quizzes. Buy from next sem onwards I am gonna follow your advice religiously .
Greetings sir! I am a 2nd year undergraduate at IIT Kharagpur. Thanks for sharing the valuable advice which was given to you by your senior! While I mostly agree with whatever has been said in the video, I can't help but point out that not all classes in IITs turn out to be that helpful academically. I've always found that reading the topics taught by the prof from a book always results in a much deeper and more fundamental understanding of the topic. Although each and every professor tries theirs best to teach the students, sometimes that clarity in thought and the ability to make people understand is clearly missing. Although this might not be the case for everyone but I have always found that the course pacing in IITs is very slow. I always feel like the Professors are repeating stuff again and again. This isn't bad per se because it promotes inclusiveness in class and gives everyone equal opportunity to learn. But sometimes the thought does cross the mind that I could have learnt the same from a book in about half the time and accomplished something else in the other. Although this isn't to say that none of the classes in IITs are useful. Infact I love attending many of the classes and eagerly wait for them on the schedule, but there are some that encouraged me to write this post. Anyways I am glad they are sparse, like an exception to an empirical rule! 😄
Thanks for writing out your thoughts so coherently. I agree that not all classes are the same. And, as I myself mentioned in the video, in order to do excellently in a course, one *has* to do self-study from books/study materials. Nevertheless, it still remains true that 100% focus in class with an effort to actively absorb the teachings is a must first step towards such excellence.
I am extremely thankful sir for this video. This methodology has been helping me since I had joined college. I was extremely involved with cultural activities of college and as you mentioned Spring Fest, it brought fond memories. I have been and participated in the same from my various clubs!
Thanks sir for a beautiful and heart touching story I required this in my coming four years now I am fresher of iiit sricity ece my professor were also similar to yu
Yes sir, I remember you told this in class at Raman Auditorium. It is really nice piece of advice. Moreover, not for the thing that will come in exams, the greatness of attending classes in the tips for excelling in professional world. Thank you sir.🙂
sir, but sometimes one could never understand the lecture in class due to several reasons e.g may be due to a teacher who cannot effectively deliver the lecture, may be due to mental stress etc. So everyone has a different way of learning . I think that self-studying is more beneficial than anything.i still remember that during my 5th semester of chemical eng I was unable to understand the lecture of my thermo2 teacher . I was under mental stress. what I adopted for this problem was to focus on self-study before and after the class. This benefited me a lot
Sir what you said may be partially true as it depends on the nature of subject being taught. If it is easy, then maybe going to class isn't necessary at all because of good content available online with much good articulation than a prof might do. And if a subject is difficult and at the same time also new, then even to get a passing grade one has to attend all the classes with self study. If any class is missed or self study not done, then we are screwed 😅.. Telling from my personal experience.
Just joined IITKGP for UG this year - Tharun's video first time introduced me to you. Thanks for sharing the advice - suits well for Basic Engineering Mechanics and Electrical Technology.

Sir, I was there in the class in which you gave the advice but I couldn't follow that I missed some classes and lost interest in between and couldn't understand the concepts later on and now I regret not following them hope I don't do it from next semester and follow the classes properly. Between it was great learning from you sir and the best professor I have seen through my completed courses. Thank you!
I'm a fresher at IIT Delhi. Thank you Sir for making such videos. It really helps us as we have no clue how college life works. I try to focus in class but some profs teach as if they are singing a lullaby. Sir, can you make a video on how to focus in lectures?
Invaluable advice Sir. But sometimes students complain about the lecture being too boring or sometimes they feel they already know what is being taught. How to handle such situations?
Professor, while I wholeheartedly agree with your advice, I had one point to make. Sometimes some professor may not be a very effective communicator or he might be going too fast or slow. This may cause a lot of problems. If the professor is too fast, it becomes difficult to understand while in class so we naturally have to study later. If the professor is too slow, then the course may not be completed properly and we again have to cover the remaining portion on our own time. Could you please recommend what is to be done in such a situation? I always attend all of my classes here in IIT Guwahati but sometimes some professors' classes do not appear to be very useful.
Hello sir, I passed my 12th in 2022 from a state board and did not attempt JEE MAINS and ADVANCED 2022. However my marks weren't satisfactory and since my state board does not allow improvement i applied for NIOS for 5 subjects in the year 2023 April attempt and have worked very hard for it. I am planning to start my JEE MAINS and ADVANCED preparation from next year and attempt it in the year 2024. Am i eligible for JEE ADVANCED 2024 if i provide my NIOS marksheet of 2023? Will be really very helpful if you answer my question. Thank you.
Sir off topic but I'm looking for making a career in academia, I might later consider RUclips as a means of imparting knowledge, just wanted to ask if I do so, then will I be allowed to monetize my channel? Many govt. Jobs don't allow such. So, just wanted to ask if that applies to academia in IITs as well?
