    Sir,I strongly appreciate your view..interest in the department is very much needed to succeed but most of the career counselors are guiding students and guardians to opt for the dream institute rather than departments..they say you can change departments after one year/you can do MBA after btech/you can participate in placement from any departments/ you will get best environment in dream college and your life will be smooth whatever department you choose/ you will get good placement only for tag/ you can learn coding from other sources whatever department you choose and sit for placement......many students are regretting following their advice.....imo admission in iit and nit only for tag and not showing interest in the department is a big mistake

    • @Prof_JC
      @Prof_JC  2 года назад +5

      It is certainly true that in the big-name colleges there are certain long-standing traditions which enhance the student experience. Plus a big advantage is the peer group that the students get to grow up with. However, when it comes to the actual studies, if the student is not at all interested in the subject matter then it is no good. The richness of co-curricular and extra curricular activities cannot be a substitute for the actual curricular activities if one is really interested in building a genuine career in professional engineering or higher studies.

    Totally agree with it - if you're sure of what stream you want to pick, prefer stream over institute and be ready to put in a lot of hard work and self study. NPTEL is how we got through engineering during undergrad (EE folks, check out lectures by Profs. Madan Gopal and SC Dutta Roy). Back then internet wasnt cheap so we would divide the lecture downloads amongst us and use BSNL's free night internet (200kbps!!) to download lectures and then share them on DVDs.
    Things are a lot lot better now and the quality and amount of online content has improved significantly.
    What you're passionate about need not be what you're initially good at. I'm fairly above average in computer programming. Yet I can't see myself doing it for hours.
    On the other hand, I struggled to learn analog design. But I can work on a circuit analysis or deaign problem for hours without knowing how much time passed. Knowing this difference is important. It's a marriage - the real strength is known in difficult times, i.e., when you've got to study/work on the dry/mundane stuff.
    If you're not sure of what you're interested in, spend some time online finding out what various streams do.

    This is the problem exactly
    People (not only students, but everyone) are crazy about two things : IIT Bombay and CS engineering
    They don't even study CS in their +2 if it is available in their school, just to get good marks in boards or JEE
    They might not be interested in that, but go because of pressure from all sides "as they scored so high they should go for CS because it is least available for others so why leave this opportunity"

      Different branches in computer science use different fields in mathematics. Like Algorithm Design and Analysis mainly uses discrete maths, some techniques from analysis. ML and data analytics are mainly linear algebra, probability and statistics. In Quantum Computing, you basically need to know all the maths but mainly functional analysis, linear algebra etc.
      If you want to go into software engineering like web development, app development then you will encounter barely any maths.
      In a nutshell, usage of mathematics in Computer Science highly depends on which field in CS you want to pursue. But having a problem mindset is extremely useful no matter which field you get into.
