    I have been following this channel recently. Great work JC! The points made here are very articulate and would greatly help our student community.
    While pursuing UG-level research may sound like an excellent idea, we should also convey that this is not a necessary thing for all students - so don't feel compelled. In fact, many students (even very high-graders) dislike it because of the associated uncertainty and the fact that even diligent efforts don't guarantee research productivity, unlike course work ... and this is entirely normal! I see many students intending to work on research projects - only to find later that the forcing function for such intentions is solely a recommendation letter and not really genuine inquisitiveness in problem-solving. Hence it would be highly beneficial for the mentors if students communicate their agenda or research motivation upfront - they can be allotted tasks accordingly. (I am a faculty member at IIT Madras)

    Thank you for the video, professor. I am neither an undergraduate student or someone from science background but i found your video very helpful. I'm a PhD student in economics (at one of the newer IITs). I been struggling quite a bit with my PhD, and this discussion on research at such a beginning level was genuinely useful for me because i have missed out on so many cruical steps and my research journey has been highly haphazard. As students it is really easy to miss out on understanding the process of research and that leaves us confused and overwhelmed. Some of us also have supervisors who don't do much research of their own so that leaves us completely without any guidance.

      Start slowly by consulting ur CFD teacher ( if there is one ) if not approach ur FM or HT professors for it.
      Let me just warn u CFD is tough it's not easy but the satisfaction of solving a CFD problem is too high.
      As for practical skills look for innovation labs or some kind of workshops am sure some colleges will have it.
      If that's also not possible invest in a 3D printer if u can afford one , for mech at least a 3 D printer is a must and u will definitely gain the practical skills u r looking for ( or the confidence of getting into a project ) .
      Also internships look for some during summer or ur free time.

      My own work and those of my students are focused on the mathematical modelling side. We do work with experimental collaborators. Choosing Mechanical Engineering can be traced back basically to my performance in IIT JEE and the rank I got coupled with my desire to come to IIT KGP for my UG studies. Plus I was good in Maths and Physics, so it seemed a sensible choice ... but that is true for most of us! :)

    Sir can you please advise on how we undergrads can understand which ideas are actually useful and which ones are childish? Sometimes when we do get ideas, there is this usual fear that it might be so childish that it already could have been outdated or it probably was already in progress or done. How to confirm if we are doing relevant work sir?

    • @Prof_JC
      @Prof_JC  2 года назад +5

      At the very outset it is not wise to try to come up with ideas. First of all start by discussing with the professor you are working with. Do some work. Read a lot. That will give you some experience in what is doable, what is interesting and significant. Once you gain some maturity like this, you will yourself find that you are capable of thinking of ideas in a realistic way.

    I have an issue of going very deep into the theory of the subject matter before doing something actionable. I do so as (a) I have always felt that before doing something I should have proper knowledge of that thing in order to mitigate mistakes (b) ignorance makes me very uncomfortable. This mindset often makes me very unproductive which is looked down upon when you are pursuing an engineering degree. So given my present mindset, how should I transition into a more productive/engineering mindset? Please throw some light on it.

    • @Prof_JC
      @Prof_JC  2 года назад +5

      We have to be pragmatic and learn to find a balance. There is no end to going deep. If you need to convince yourself, try to think that once you start doing something hands-on it can actually deepen your understanding. Sometimes you will realize after doing something that ... oh that's why in the theory they mentioned that assumption or cautioned about such and such a condition. And then after you start doing things if you go back to reading once more you will realize that you have a far greater insight than before.

      @@Prof_JC Thank you for the reply sir. I have a follow up question. I have a tendency to go through proofs very rigorously of complex topics. I do that in an attempt to understand the topic from the very first principles. But of course that's often very time consuming and exhausting. So I wanted to know, to what layer should we invest in understanding a topic specifically of an engineering subject. I have always been sceptical of blackboxing things, but if someone convinces me that it is no crime to do that, it will remove a huge burden from my subconscious mind.

      @@Prof_JC I'm from Electronics and Communication department, but I've inclination towards software engineering. Actually I would like to rephrase my question. Let me put it this way:
      My question is about a very fundamental issue, that is, the way we have to absorb information in engineering (both academia and industry). We are expected to learn facts about certain topics, and apply them in a project in a short span of time. In industry, as I understand, it only matters to "get things done". But I always tend to dig deep in the theory, taking my time understanding every detail of the topic. I want to have a good grasp of a topic before applying it. But in a strict deadline of a project, it is not always possible to do so. So how do I convince myself that it's okay to be not knowing about a topic completely before applying it? (Note: It would be of interest to you to know that I'm in second year presently, so I have very limited experience as for any real engineering work.)

    • @Prof_JC
      @Prof_JC  2 года назад +4

      @@agastyasrivastava4012 Thanks for explaining your situation so clearly. I don't have any experience with ECE subjects. However, to answer your general question, yes it may seem that way that we have to sacrifice in-depth understanding to get things done for the immediate requirements. And that is sometimes true. But know this that you can always come back later to really go deeply into it. For instance, I teach solid mechanics, elasticity etc. You wouldn't believe the number of times I have read and revised and rethought about the same topics. Each time I teach it it seems I am peeling off another layer of confusion ... seeing things in a new light. But note if I had tried to go in this much depth back when I was in 2nd year, I would not have done well in my semester ... I would have probably not gotten the chance to pursue higher studies and perhaps never would have gotten the opportunity to explore things in more detail when it really matters. There is a beautiful piece of dialog from the 2007 movie The Great Debaters: We must do the things that we have to do so that we can do the things that we want to do.

      Even if you go to the absolute best college in the world, you will still find some teachers whose teaching style will not suit you. So, don't let that influence or original passion for studies. As you yourself pointed out that you did get in touch with some professors whose teaching style you liked. Take that as positive. In keeping with the spirit of this video, if you start doing a project (for instance, with one of those professors you like) you will gain a further impetus to study. Actually, this whole thing you are feeling is very much a part of growing up. At every stage, you will find things which are not to your liking. So you have to adapt and extract the best out of it.
