  • This video is a short clip taken from the full-length discussion with Professor Richard Felder. The full-length video is available at this link: • What are teachers doin...
Here we discuss the response of introverted students when faced with a teaching style that encourages active learning in the classroom.
Professor Richard M. Felder is a Professor Emeritus of Chemical Engineering at the North Carolina State University, United States. He is a pioneering figure in the field of research on engineering education. He is the co-author of the book, "Teaching and Learning STEM, A Practical Guide".

Thanks a lot, professor, for providing small clips from the original video, often it becomes difficult to watch the full-length videos in one sitting because of time constraints, but these small ones are really helpful as can be watched while traveling even, thanks a lot again for taking up this great initiative of mentoring the student community and no doubt it is a privilege for all of us to get guidance from a professor of India's sanctum sanctorum of higher education.

    Hii!
Not my real ID, but ntl, your student who admired your teaching a lot.
I really enjoyed the solving sessions in our Fluids and MOS classes. And if I can add 2 cents, the main problem is not introvert-extrovert thing.
As Prof Felder pointed out, we are comfortable enough to talk to 1-2 people if they are friendly.
Imo, the main resistance from our class during our problem-solving sessions was this perception---
If you indulge with the prof during class, you are "maggu" and the only reason you are asking so many doubts is coz you want favors for your grades and you want to set an impression on the prof.
Which to my surprise, is not that far from truth!! I saw many people asking unnecessary doubts just for this reason (yes, my friends confessed this to me from their own mouth many times).
I bring this up because it did upset other people I knew from opening up as that would mean they are similar to the people who seek favors.
Do you relate to instances where students are asking doubts not to learn but to show that they know more than others?
If so, do you see any solution to setting this straight?

    • @Prof_JC
      @Prof_JC  2 года назад +11

Thanks for the kind words and also for raising this issue. Actually, it is usually clear when a student is genuinely asking a doubt or just trying to grab attention. Although we as faculty may not overtly discourage such behaviour but as far as grades go, we stick to the actual performance in the exam. Nobody is getting higher grades just by trying to be a teacher's pet! On the other hand, even back in our day, we had this fear of being labeled as maggu. But then one of my batchmates used to ask doubts without any care, that I took a cue from and slowly dropped all thoughts about what others would think! As Feynman's wife taught him "What do you care what other people think" (there is an actual book by that name).

Dear Professor, I think you were discussing about socially anxious people. Introvert and Socially Anxious is totally different thing , I was very socially anxious. Also I was/am suffering from obsessive compulsive personality disorder (where everything must be perfect) so let's say I pick up a book and learn about transistor than I go all the way to doping level, electromagnetism, semiconductor physics, quantum mechanics and history about how technology was evolved over the course of time etc... so I never completed my syllabus in my bachelors and master of engg..
there is Japanese word called tsundoku means people acquiring more material than their ability to read. also the abundant information available on internet makes it very hard person like me ; it's like abhimanyu knows how to go into chakravyuh (internet) but don't how to get out from chakravyuh (internet).

For classic sci-fi, there is no arguing against the Foundation series by Dr Isaac Asimov. For some space drama, you can try Seveneves by Neal Stephenson. Let me know if you like this list.

Sir, discussing project with fellow scholars has helped me very much. Sometimes, when I was not able to figure out a solution, speaking to them helped me to figure out the problem in a much faster rate. It's not that I get help from them all the time but participating in group discussions and exchanging perceptions over a cup of tea kind of opened many blocked doors in my head. I look back in the time when I never used to talk to people much and I realize that mistake now.
Thanks to both professors for the wonderful insights😄

    Amazing video 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
    It felt amazing .
I was also an introvert but the best part is that I changed myself.
There are lots of problems that exist as an introvert and when you see things practically they don't even exist and the only solution is to start interacting with people.
One more point that you also mentioned and I also experienced as an introvert that it affects your studies a lot and your studies improve by interacting with your classmates.
But best part is we all change with time and suitations.
Thankyou for giving us such content in videos 🙏🏻
