At the beginning I called him out all the time, but I learned after while you do have to pick and choose. If you do it all the time, they just tune it out. And in my case he came from an abusive household as a child, which had yelling, screaming and physical violence. So when I do call him out I have to do it in a calm, assertive voice rather than a yelling screaming voice. Thanks for another great video!

This is the only way I ever found effective when communicating with my son, even when he was a child. And it's a big reason I watch your videos and go to Alanon meetings. I think he has a problem with alcohol (not sure the extent) but if/when the opportunity arises for me to say something, it has to be exactly the way you described. AND it has to be in a moment that I know he can actually hear what I say. The right thing, at the right time, and it has to be very clear, but also short. I so admire that type of communication, but it does NOT come naturally to me, so I really have prepare for it!

Your videos are so helpful. My husband sneak drinks and thinks I can’t tell. I feel like if I act angry, he just picks fights and acts mean or a victim. I want to use this confrontation strategy so he knows I know.

My boyfriend is 8 months sober from alcohol but relapsed on Adderall or meth. He started playing video games 12 hours a day then crashed and slept for days. He took a pee test last week it was positive. I asked him to take another one today 😢he is refusing now. I let him borrow my car, he saw this one “friend” who is so toxic. I don’t know what to do Amber 😢😢😢😢 I’m 40 and not getting any younger . I’m getting my MFT and interning at a drug and alcohol rehab. now I get the chaos at home too. I wish I could work for you when I graduate and move. I’ve been with my boyfriend 5 years. Once I graduate I’ve some decisions to make.

I've been trying to help my mother lately, she's an alcoholic and has been for over 20 years.... it's gotten to the point where she's calling into work, being very aggressive once she's drunk... and she's even been to jail for beating me up. She was sober for a few weeks after she got out but just a few days ago she started again. I'm struggling now to either worry about myself or to help her still..... it's very hard

Hi Amber, how do I confront Steve for saying on fb he found it funny that I couldn’t have children? He knows we tried for ten years but to throw that in my face when he’s on meth. How do I have the conversation with him that it’s disgusting behaviour when he’s 55 years old?

  • @julie1776

My husband of 42 years is addicted to oxy & benzos. He does have severe chronic pain & agreed to let me control the pills. I couldn’t figure out how they kept disappearing & he’d blame ME. Then he’d demand some of my Norco.
Last month I gave him lots of chances to admit he’d found where I kept them, I finally said “You cheated, you stole them, you let me take the blame for being ‘irresponsible.’ I feel hugely betrayed, almost as if you’d cheated on me. You let me suffer more pain so you could have my Rx.” It seemed to make an impression at the time but we’re back at square 1. My life revolves around his addiction and his health. I’m responsible for dealing with his 95 yr old mom in assisted living. All while dealing w/severe back pain (surgeon said few people w/such an MRI would be walking) and autoimmune disease. One specialist had a program to control the disease & asked me to rate home support in a scale of 1-10. I said 0. My friends said it was more like -10. He does NOTHING around the house, unable to work for over 20 years, watches TV all day then complains he’s stuck in the house. Self-care has diminished alarmingly. I told him he’s crushing what respect for him I still have. I’m hurt & angry & tired of the lies & broken promises. There are no in person NarcAnon meetings around here & I can’t be honest when he’s 15 feet away from a Zoom call. He needs inpatient treatment so I can find a meeting for myself. This is unsustainable.
