With Halloween just around the corner I wanted to make something with a Halloween themed jelly roll I have. As I make another quilted hexagon table topper I take you along for the ride. Stick around for some tips and tricks throughout the video.
Best video demonstrating how to assemble the 6 pieces at the end so that the points match. And: pressing seams open! I was not sure about that. Thanks so much, just what I need to continue my current project!
@rsislandcrafts that's nice to get your reply straight away! I agree. When skipping pressing, e.g., with small projects, you usually see it later... so simple but important! Thanks so much for your helpful videos!
Sometimes I’m on the ball 😉. As a new quilter I skipped many steps and then wondered why my project wasn’t nice looking or precise. Now I know it’s better to take the time for those little steps.
Cindy Gehrke Aww Thank you so much! I’m glad I could show you something new. I don’t have specialty rulers either. I try to make clear simple “tutorials” because that’s what I need. I’m not a fancy quilter.
A fun project, Robin! Favorite quote: “If they don’t like it, tell them to be quiet.” 😂 (You crack me up.) Can’t wait to see your Christmas hexagons! 😉 Btw, thanks for walking us through that 60 degree stuff. 😊
That 60 degree stuff used to scare me but if I take it slow it's really not that difficult. I used to worry about what people said or thought but one of the benefits of getting older is that I don't always care anymore. ;)
I made one of these about 3 weeks ago using my ruler like you did. It turned out fine. This morning I started another one and my triangles end up in a straight row! Now for plan B which is to have your video in front of me when I cut!
I plan on making some for Christmas and I will have my video running in front of me too 😉. It’s easy to miss a step or lay the ruler on the wrong line. I’m sure your next one will be perfect. ✂️✂️✂️
I remember watching this video in the past but I didn't leave as comment, so doing that today - good job Robin. I made my brother one of these last Xmas using christmas fabrics, maybe after watching this video. He and my sil loved it :)
I like to sew 7 strips together, then I have the option to drop down a row to mix them up when I'm cutting. You do have to pick out the seams a bit but it works great if you want a more scrappy look
Bev Cote' Glad I could help. Gotta say I was thrilled myself when I figured it out lol. I’ll have to show you on a different one because I made and quilted 4 of them this week lol. Yep, just a bit addicted ;)
Beverley Simmons Each week’s video is a surprise to me too 😂. I might be adding some show and tell weeks here and there just so I can get ahead of other videos (because I sew right along with the video) and I have a new product line I want to get made and into the shop before Christmas.
Good for you it is 11:30am. I think I look for something for I have moose steaks for supper. You must be tired of hearing from just have fun what you are doing and I keep on watching thanks
Beverley Simmons Since I’m just really getting into these videos I haven’t made a set schedule yet. I want to try making a variety of table runners or wall hangings but make them in a pattern that can be repeated to make a larger quilt. I love requests and will make a list of everyone’s requests and suggestions and do the best I can to work through that list. I was thinking this week of making some simple hand towels for the kitchen. With Christmas just around the corner it’s a good time to work on small quick projects for gifts or ourselves.
Tomorrow I am hoping to get it finished theses on the binding home all day getting things ready for Saturday’s sale around the bay. My friend is doing this for me she is so good tries o help me and all
That’s very sweet of your friend. I’ll be rooting you on. I like to listen to audio books when I have a deadline. If I watch a movie or RUclips I spend more time watching than I do stitching. Lol
Thank you so much for your video!! I wish I had viewed this before I attempted my project! You gave so many good tips that I am sure will help on my next attempt using this pattern!
I’m so glad my tips were helpful. Earlier this week I was thinking about making more of these toppers. With Autumn around the corner it’s a good time to make a few. Happy sewing!!
Beverley Simmons Scrappy quilts are my favorite so I’m sure you’ll be seeing several. Even if it’s not a quilt project I make there will be times where you can use the info from one project and apply it to something else.
Lutisha Hill I made It just like a standard quilt with a backing and binding. The binding process is the same you just have more corners to turn. Have fun!
Enjoyed your video as usual! You explain things clearly and make it look easy. I loved how you showed the ruler work with the tape. I am afraid there is yet another project added to my list😅
Beverley Simmons I’m stealing some knitting time while waiting for my turn to get a hair cut 😉. I miss crochet but my shoulder just won’t allow it anymore.
I'm going to try quilt as you go sometime soon. I've done QAYG table runners and tote bags but not a block by block quilt. I've been researching different ways to put them together because I'm not a big fan of the style most people use where you add a sashing strip over the seam and hand stitch it down. For now I'm just letting it percolate in my brain and see what bubbles up.
Beverley Simmons I’m in SouthWest Florida just a bit south of Tampa. Where do you live? Winter is when our area comes alive. With the cooler temps you see people out and about walking and bike riding. The neighborhood kids are out playing.
Beverley Simmons I thought it would be horribly difficult but it’s really easy. I don’t remember if I mentioned this or cut it during editing but once you cut the first triangle you could make a template from that triangle so it’s easier to cut the rest.
I have searched the internet and you tube with no luck finding a round table topper for a 46 inch table. I believe your video shows it could work by adding more strips of fabric but then what degree would it need to be cut? I have tried figuring it out myself but I am 78 years old so it's been a long time since school math!!! Any help will be very appreciated, thank you. Geri
Geri Jones I’m better at accounting math than angles and fractions. My two thoughts are first - have you looked for a round tree skirt in the size you need? Second - do you remember the trick of folding a piece of paper and using a pencil on a string to find the circle? That would give you the round circle you need but then It would only be one solid fabric and not like this table topper. Hmm. Let me take a look around a bit and see what I can find. I remember a blogger making something that might work. I believe they used one of those really long Dresden rulers. I wonder if you either had wider strips or more strips that It would make It the size you need. It still wouldn’t be round though.
Geri Jones I found this basic idea. Although you would have to add an appliqué circle to the center to cover the hole for the tree. www.advanced-embroidery-designs.com/projects/guide_tree_skirt.html
Geri Jones Here’s another - quiltingdigest.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/EncircledLoveMiniQuiltPattern.pdf I hope you find something that works for you.
About my friend will help me on Saturday she is a very good friend I have a disabilities and sometimes that gets in a way but I can do most things I even manage to do the joining in the binding
bonnie musselman I think if the design on the fabric allows It you should probably go straight of grain. I would be concerned about stretching the bias. Although if you use a ton of pins and go slow you should be fine either way. To be honest, I never pay attention to straight of grain. I work with so many scraps that I can’t always be picky.
My guess would be either your pieces aren’t all cut the same or your seam allowance isn’t exact on all pieces. Unfortunately I think you will need to use your seam ripper. Then lay them in a pile and make sure they are all equal. When you made your original strip set did that lay flat with no wobbly seam lines?
RsIslandCrafts - Robin thank you for answering so quickly. I am going to just make a different one with your suggestions. Thank you for the nice tutorial.
Sounds like a good plan. I try to make a prototype using not my best fabric when I try new projects. That way I’m not upset if something goes wrong because when I’m sewing there’s a very good chance something will go wrong 😉. Good luck!
A 30 degree ruler will mean you need more wedges for your circle. I haven’t made one that size but the process should be the same. I suggest using some scrap fabrics to test It out. See what measurements you might need.
Beverley Simmons I like the look but it sure does take a long time. On some quilts it’s taken longer to hand stitch the binding than it did to make the whole quilt lol.
Good morning it is 8:00 am having toast and tea haven’t finish the binding one side done I give it another go this morning doctor appt this afternoon you are sweet lady for thinking of me
I always sew the binding by machine not good at that lol then the girls wanted me to sew by hand now I have arthritis in my right hand fingers and I hat with a passion to get my girl friends to help me all the time so I would like to go back to do machine sewn. Ok that part is done lol. So the question is it it 1/4 sewing on the front or what lol can you show me a good picture I looked at videos and watched a lot willll like to see the back and front up close hope you know what I mean send me an email lol I send you a pretty quilt I just finished between me and my best friend thank you for your time girl.
Beverley Simmons I love sewing by hand and how nice it looks but in reality that isn’t always possible. I’ve dabbled with machine sewn binding with mixed results. Maybe a placemat series would be a good idea. Here’s what I’ve figured out so far....with machine sewn binding you sew the binding to the back first. 1/4” is the common measurement but it’s really whatever works for you. A walking foot is helpful but not necessary. Then you iron the binding over to the front. Use some clover clips to keep the binding lined up past the stitch line from sewing on the binding. Stitch along the edge of the binding catching the front binding but not the back. That’s the hardest part for me so I found an easier way. When you sew the binding to the front use a decorative stitch. My favorite is a serpentine stitch so if you don’t always sew straight it won’t matter. You could use a buttonhole stitch too. Really any stitch you use will be fine as long as it holds the binding down. There is a binding foot that I’ve recently tried and it’s okay it just takes a bit of practice. You use bias tape (store bought or handmade) binding and sew the front and back on simultaneously. I like the speed and durability of sewn binding so I keep trying to perfect my technique. It’s hard if you don’t make several quilts a year. You can email me at rsislandcrafts@gmail.com
Beverley Simmons Yes! I did get your emails. I’m waiting to respond until afternoon break time so I can give them my full attention. The quilt is adorable though and your stitching looks wonderful.
Beverley Simmons That’s a good idea. I don’t know anything about group chats though. I’ll have to see what’s available. It would be fun for some of us to chat, show what we’re working on, and ask questions.
With Halloween just around the corner I wanted to make something with a Halloween themed jelly roll I have. As I make another quilted hexagon table topper I take you along for the ride. Stick around for some tips and tricks throughout the video.
Vicki Robles I say go for It! Halloween is great because you can mix a bunch of colors and It just works.
Your tape idea on your ruler saved me!!!
That’s great news. I know I’ve miscut fabric before and it’s frustrating. Happy sewing!!
Best video demonstrating how to assemble the 6 pieces at the end so that the points match. And: pressing seams open! I was not sure about that. Thanks so much, just what I need to continue my current project!
Glad it helped! Pressing seams can be a big controversy but sometimes it’s just necessary to get everything to work. Happy sewing!!
Thanks for the ruler demo! I don't have many specialty rulers and always appreciate common sense tutorials!
You always teach me something new! 😊
Cindy Gehrke Aww Thank you so much! I’m glad I could show you something new. I don’t have specialty rulers either. I try to make clear simple “tutorials” because that’s what I need. I’m not a fancy quilter.

I’m addicted to these now I love making them
They are fun to make. I love that they fit any holiday by simply changing the fabrics.
I remember watching this video in the past but I didn't leave as comment, so doing that today - good job Robin. I made my brother one of these last Xmas using christmas fabrics, maybe after watching this video. He and my sil loved it :)
Thanks Lesley! I like that it’s a bit different. It can be made very subtle or wild and crazy. Something for everyone!!
I looove your close-ups. Not too many videos show them that close. Yours do. Good job girl. 👍
Thank you so much. 🦩
I like to sew 7 strips together, then I have the option to drop down a row to mix them up when I'm cutting. You do have to pick out the seams a bit but it works great if you want a more scrappy look
Great tip. Thanks for sharing. I’ll give It a try.
Thank you I never could figure out the degree lines. You explained it so well!! TFS again. Please show us you quilting it. Love your videos.
Bev Cote' Glad I could help. Gotta say I was thrilled myself when I figured it out lol. I’ll have to show you on a different one because I made and quilted 4 of them this week lol. Yep, just a bit addicted ;)

These are so awesome. Your directions are awesome.
Thank you so much!!
Very pretty colors . Love it.!!!
Thanks you! They are fun to make.
Good for you it is 11:30am. I think I look for something for I have moose steaks for supper. You must be tired of hearing from just have fun what you are doing and I keep on watching thanks
I've never had moose meat.
Any scrappy quilt videos coming up I am not an experienced quilter so I do the easy quilts. Looking forward to your next video

I would love to see it. I like oohing and aahing at other people’s projects.
That is ok just hoping to have some ideas on scrappy quilt but still love seen your videos

I really love your approach. thanks so much. How do you put a backing? is it binding?
Good Job! I plan to make one

I be here tonight crocheting away

Love doing string quilting but like to know how to do quilt as you go .sometime lol

Home again going to watch that video on sewing the binding on see if I can do this I am sure I can
Beverley Simmons I have faith in you. Please let me know how it turns out for you.
Very sweet
Eleonore Loundermon Thank you! They were fun to make.
Hi almost finished my quilt phew lol I got one quilt as you go tutorial she is good she is using string quilts have a look around
Beverley Simmons Excellent! One less thing to worry about.
Had to come back and watch this one again, Robin. It’s so interesting and fun! (I’ve got my Christmas fabrics read to cut into 2” strips.) 😊
I hope you enjoy making yours ass much as I did mine. Choosing fabrics is so much.
You are fast at replying just wondering can I do that one looks so nice

Got a question for you to on sewing the binding on
Beverley Simmons Ask away.
Robin can you teach the binding on a hexagon? thank you.
I can definitely add It to my video to do list. I’ll see if i can bump it up towards the top. Thanks!
That is cute
Beverley Simmons Thank you!
Great project ❤ watching some more replies 😊
Thanks! These were fun to sew and I’m
Hoping to make more this year.
About my friend will help me on Saturday she is a very good friend I have a disabilities and sometimes that gets in a way but I can do most things I even manage to do the joining in the binding
Beverley Simmons It’s wonderful to have a friend that can help you with your quilt projects.
So far so good going slowly
Hmm...just thinking...if I were to cut my own 2” strips, do you think I should cut them on the straight of grain or crosswise? Thanks.
bonnie musselman I think if the design on the fabric allows It you should probably go straight of grain. I would be concerned about stretching the bias. Although if you use a ton of pins and go slow you should be fine either way. To be honest, I never pay attention to straight of grain. I work with so many scraps that I can’t always be picky.
7:00 pm crocheting squares I had nap lol
I had a little nap too lol
Got it right this time 😀😅😅
Susan Rascone WooHoo!! 😁

Just a baby quilt wish I can send pictures but it is my first time doing this
Beverley Simmons Just checking in on you. Are you still going strong or did you take a break for tonight?
I am to that is good
I know right my hand is sweating here lol
Hey one side done not too bad took all afternoon lol
Beverley Simmons I like the look but it sure does take a long time. On some quilts it’s taken longer to hand stitch the binding than it did to make the whole quilt lol.
Mmm wonder
Beverley Simmons Whatcha wondering?
Good morning it is 8:00 am having toast and tea haven’t finish the binding one side done I give it another go this morning doctor appt this afternoon you are sweet lady for thinking of me
This is great chatting with you hope I am not taking up your time
Beverley Simmons No worries. You’re fine. If I’m busy I’ll just chat with you when I can.
I am home girl crocheting squares
I saw your stack of squares. You’re a machine lol. I’m finally done with the majority of my to do list and I’m knitting on my sweater.
I always sew the binding by machine not good at that lol then the girls wanted me to sew by hand now I have arthritis in my right hand fingers and I hat with a passion to get my girl friends to help me all the time so I would like to go back to do machine sewn.
