HK Bixler 1.1 What they DON'T TELL YOU! My ARF Building Tips

- I finally bought a Bixler , the ARF version, but soon discovered that the construction manual for the ARF was rubbish so I've put together a video showing how I sorted a few issues that came up.
Also show fitting the undercarriage and my FPV solution among other things.

Very good point about the control rod lengths! It's great that hobbyking still offers these kits inn2022 and at such modest price.
Yes remarkably good price!
Thank you so much for posting this video I just bought a bixler off the same model and the points and tips you have given will save me lots of time and headaches especially the one about the control wire lengths and there too about drilling the motor Mount thank you
Great, glad you found it useful. For me the worst thing was when glueing it together I put UHU Por on, let it dry a bit and the starting putting the halves together at the nose. I got to the tail and because foam is soft and stretchy the two halves didn't line up. Possibly introduced a slight bend. If I did one again I'd try and start putting together in the middle or I'd line the 2 halves together dry and put little marks on to help line them up. Have fun!
That's what I call enjoyment in rc flying, it really enhance our imagination in assembling things. Happy flying!
For sure! Happy flying!
Wish I had found this video before I assembled mine!
Glad it's been helpful mate!
Thanks that was very useful and instructional!
Thanks mate, it's useful to read my reply to Kip below about sticking the two fusi halves together. It's the worst part!
I used PVA to glue the sides together, taped it to hold it in place to dry.
mistake I made was starting at nose, by the time I got to the end of the fusi it was 10 mm out. If I build another I'd assemble it from the middle.
10mm is a lot.

Thank you.... This was a big help....
You're welcome!
Thanks for posting Bob, i,ve have the Pnp version for a few years now, what i like about the Bixler you can get the airframe parts individually, touch wood ive still got all the original plane intact, Nice all rounder, likes wind, can slope soar, Andrew Newton thinks very highly of this pusher Check out DutchRc Adventure,s take on this plane.
Thanks Philip, yes, I'm well pleased with it though still haven't had a chance to maiden it, weather and being busy. Soon though. 😉 I've seen Andrew Newton's stuff and Dutch RC. Useful. If I get a chance I'll probably video my maiden too!
Very nice plane! I got the same motor esc combination. During the 3rd flight the esc overheated and.... uncontrolled crashed! The failsafe setting reduced the damage. So I put in a 40A Skywalker and made cooling holes. After my vacation I going to put in a separate ubec.
Cool. I'm surprised you overheated. I flew it the other day and 1/2 throttle is enough power. I think I'll add a couple of scoops just in case though!
Separate UBEC a good idea though!
I've had all the bixler range, and the bixler 1 is the best of them. Here's a tip, dig those wooden washers out of the wings and use 4 15mmx3mm round magnets glued in to hold the wings together. If you use the washers and screws, you'll bugger up the wings on your first bad landing, magnets will let go in a crash but are more than strong enough to hold the wings on with even the wildest flying. The bix 1 loves the wind and will fly in 40mph gusts, will slope soar on rocky slopes with no decent LZ where you wouldn't risk a nice plane, ok for local FPV, hedge hopping and flying through 5 bar gates, fun for combat - they are as cheap as chips and should be treated as disposable. Do this and you will love it
Thanks mate, useful info. It's a really nice looking model, looking forward to flying it, and the 5 bar gate fpv sounds interesting! Blowing a hooley here so no flying for a bit.
Fantastic tip regarding the magnets, thank you
Thanks for a well presented build. I made my own external engine mount which gives me ability to change the motor, external fitment of the speedy gets airflow. Beware of the no-name 30A speedy from BG, I’ve had 3 out of 4 fail, 1 even smoked up during programming??
Thanks Ian. I finally got it sorted and it flew well Wednesday. Easy relaxed flying, just floated around! I've used a few yellow no brand 30 amp esc's and so far they've been OK. Fingers crossed. Never tried programming any, they didn't come with any literature!
You don't really need instructions Mate!
Otherwise you wouldn't have made such an In-depth Good Review.
Built My 1st in 2018. Love em.. You will tend to Love the second one Better though!!
Thanks, now it's sorted it is great. Re the instructions, not everybody agrees with you mate! Quote 'And they call this version the ARF for what reason? Disassembled, nothing included?' 😉
And they call this version the ARF for what reason? Disassembled, nothing included? Seems this is how a kit comes. Not ARF.
Great video, lots of detail. Helpful for newbies and those with some experience. Take care, be safe
Glad it was useful, and yes, it is really a kit! You need to be very careful glueing the two fusi halves together. I put on UHU Por , left it a minute or two then started putting together at the nose. When I got to the end of the fusi the halves were a couple of mm out and I think it introduced a slight bend. Might be better to start in the middle. Took a while to sort it but I actually flew it today and it flies really well. Amazing glide.
I saw a couple Bixler 1.1 unboxing videos and they dont mention about langing gear. How did you get them?
Bought separately. E bay or Hobbyking I think. Google and you'll see some ads for it. £15 It's not great taking off from grass , tends to nose over. Maybe OK on smooth surface.
@@bobflymanThank you!
A popular plane, never had one Bob but I can see the attraction 👍
Thanks Cliff, it looks great. Can't wait for the wind to drop a bit 😬 and get out and maiden it!
The Bixler will actually belly take off from short grass. No need for gear. Put some packing tape on the bottom of the fuse. Good to go.
Mmm. Don't think I tried that. With the u/c it tends to nose over, maybe belly would be better then. Thanks.
if you rotate the motor on the mount you don't have to drill that hole
I tried it both ways, the wires wouldn't easily go down the moulding that way. Much better down the middle.
@@bobflyman yeah maybe its differences in motors but my wires came out the top and i could just run it down the inside no problem.
