Leeds Castle has been called the loveliest castle in England and it certainly lives up to the name. The elegant stone keep, towers, and crenelated battlements surrounded by a tranquil moat, beautiful gardens and lush parkland are exactly what you would picture as an idealized medieval castle. Across the centuries, it has often been strong women who have owned, enjoyed, renovated and defended Leeds castle. It was the tranquil retreat for generations of medieval Queens, the scene of a deadly stand-off between great ladies, a prison for two accused royal witches, and a luxurious playground for aristocrats and Hollywood stars. I have fond memories of coming her as a child, and I’m excited to be back. So come with me as we explore this tranquil castle and it’s scandalous history!
Queen Eleanor of Castile
Queen Margaret of France
Queen Isabella of France
Queen Anne of Bohemia
Queen Joan of Navarre
Queen Catherine of Valois
Eleanor, Duchess of Gloucester
Queen Catherine of Aragon
Olive, Lady Baillie
Leeds Castle did not comp my stay, so this is not a paid promotion. I just love this Castle!

In My Dreams!
How the other half suffers 😅
Right!?
Love your videos! They are WAY better than anything on tv! You deserve your own show!🎉🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤❤❤❤
I second your motion!
I third that 😅 if there is such a thing 😆 🤣 😂 😹
Correction : Henry VII didn't claim the throne through his mother Catherine of Valois but through his mother Margaret Beaufort. Margaret was the the great-granddaughter of John of Gaunt, founder of the Lancastrian branch but her claim was considered inferior because her grandfather John Beaufort was born in 1373 but his mother wasn't married to John of Gaunt until 1396. Canon law decreed that children conceived before marriage are to be considered as bastards but Richard II got Pope Boniface IX declare John Beaufort legitimate, still Henry IV excluded John Beaufort from the succession. John's son John Beaufort II, Duke of Somerset had a somewhat better claim through his mother Margaret Holland as Edward I of England -> Edmund of Woodstock, Earl of Kent -> Joan of Kent -> Thomas Holland II, Earl of Kent -> Margaret Holland. So even if we take the Beaufort claim to be void, Henry VII could still claim the throne but it would require to go back by atleast 7 generations & there were already many aristocrats in & outside England who had much better claims. Most importantly, Margaret, sister of Edward IV, widow of Charles the Bold Duke of Burgundy, although childless, was actively trying to undermine Henry VII with the assistance of her step son-in-law HRE Maximilian I. This made Henry VII's marriage to Elizabeth of York even more important.
I was about to say this. Cause she was a French princess so they can’t claim the English throne through her.
Did you even listen?
How do you have 51 likes?
She said Catherine was the mother of Henry VI.
Catherine would have also been Henry VII's grandmother with Henry VI being Henry VII's half-uncle
@@Alex-zs7gw it doesn’t work like that I’m afraid he is correct. You can’t claim the throne from your half uncle who’s mother was not the rightful ruler of England.
@@doreensika837 yeah I'm not simple lol
...perhaps I've overreacted to a typo and the OP meant grandmother when referring to CoV.
I don't think anyone then or now however believed Henry Tudor's claim had anything to do with Catherine of Valois - being consort
What complicates the WotR however is firstly how Henry VI acknowledged the legitimacy of his half siblings and elevated their status at the time, and the debate over matrilineal lineage with the Lancastrians claiming a decree had been agreed by Edward III and John to negate any matrilineal claims (York having matrilineal through 2nd son and patrilineal through 4th Vs theirs through pat 3rd)
I'd love seeing more "lady's castles" videos. This was very entertaining, as always. Thank you! ❤
I visited Leeds Castle with my family several years ago. The gardens were so beautiful and the white peacocks stunning!
My husband proposed to me by the moat at Leeds castle ❤
I love history. Medieval time period is my favorite. But I also love hearing about the history of castles and manor houses. The people who built it and all the way to current times is so fascinating. It is a shame that families have to struggle to keep their homes. Very sad. But this has been a happy story and Thank you for sharing your story with us 😊.
I love that you were watching the 1939 film "The women" while filming your beautiful hotel room. Great movie!
I love that movie as well!😍
That looks more like one of the castle's exhibits than a guest's room? 😮
The huge, park-like grounds, black and white swans in lush water features and ponds, manicured lawns and beautiful visitor facilities would make Leeds worth the visit even without a Castle visit.
I have seen images of Leeds Castle, and I knew that it was traditionally the abode of royal and noble women, but I was not aware of it's full history until now. I was also not aware that it had been, not that long ago, a ruin! Wow - am I happy that Lady Bailey spent what was necessary to restore it like she did. That was a MAJOR risk she took. I am glad that it paid off. Great video.
It helped that her mother Pauline along with her brother Payne Whitney were the two to get the biggest chunk of their uncle Oliver Payne's vast fortune. Let's hear it for good old American Gilded Age money!
@@LJB103 Hear! Hear! Sometimes new money does the right thing.
Lindsay you’ve been killing it with putting my favourite background music😭🫶
Me and my partner are off to this for Valentine’s Day! Thank you for this video. Very exciting. 😊
Eleanor of Castille gave birth 16 times, but wow is it tragic. I was curious and googled it. Only 6 of the 16 lived to adulthood.
1F stillborn
2F died in infancy
3F died in infancy
4M died at age 5
5M died at age 6
6F died at 29
7F died in infancy
8F died at age 35
9M died at age 11
10F died at age 58
11F died at age 2
12F died in infancy
13F died at age 53
14M died shortly after birth
15F died at age 34
16M died at age 43
It looks rather quaint. I want to suddenly promenade and then remember to write some letters.
The photo of you and your mother enjoying lunch there is so cute!! I definitely look forward to your videos. Thank you for deepening my love and knowledge of history. I hope to one day explore the glorious Leeds castle and all of its history.
Thanks!
When I read Le mort du Artur, I played Angevin over and over every time I picked up the book. Not a single word was read without it, and all thanks to your Arthurian Legends video (one of my favs :))
This is SO interesting. I spent a day at Leeds Castle, but you've given so many details that weren't stressed while there. Amazing. Thank you!
Leeds Castle sounds like a wonderful place to visit! ❤🏰❤ So much beauty and history! 😍 No wonder queens of the past came here to rest and relax. 👑 If I ever go and visit The United Kingdom, I'll be sure to pay this historical masterpiece a visit! 😊
Leeds Castle has always been my favorite to look at pictures of
Wow! Lindsey you outdid yourself with this video!
Thank so you much!
That last line made me tear up!! What an interesting historic castle!
Lindsay, you're my favorite RUclipsr. I am such a royal history buff, and your videos never disappoint. Keep on keeping on.
Hope you do another Lovers or Mistresses video soon ❤
I’ve been waiting for this one! So excited!!
Your videos are always a pleasure to watch. Your time and dedication certainly doesn’t go unnoticed. I particularly enjoy all the visual elements whilst learning. Great work❤
Love seeing you visiting the castle ^^ Great video as always!
I've been reading a book called Princesses Behaving Badly and so many of the women you mentioned today are found in this book. I find the book title amusing because none of the women are behaving "badly"... they're just behaving like men. They're being fierce, protective, outspoken, and strong.
Fabulous video! So well done; I love this new personal approach!
When Cary Grant married Barbara Hutton they affectionately nicknamed "Cash and Cary".
Great video. So much history and a beautiful castle. Thanks so much for sharing.
Wow, thank you for this! Isabella of France is one of my ancestors and it was amazing to learn all this.
love this video, it shows the odd way a small house turns into a stunning castle over decades and decades! also love your hair!
Thank you history for tea time with Lindsad today 😊😅😂❤❤❤❤
THE BEST ... SO WELL DONE!
Me and my partner go to Leeds Castle so often. It’s so beautiful❤
I simply adore Leeds castle, it is absolutely beautiful
Henry the 7ths claim came not from the paternal Tudor line and Katherine of Valois but from his mother Margret Beaufort who was a descendant of John of Gaunt who was the son of Edward the third
A wonderful video, Lindsay. Definitely different from ones you’ve done before and I love that
The adventure Segway at Leeds castle is awesome
👏👏👏👏 Thankyou for another well researched and scripted video. Whoever was your cameraman did a great job, too. I always look forward to your new videos knowing I will enjoy learning about interesting people and places.
Well done!!
Beautiful castle. You know it's haunted also by ghosts 👻 😊
This is my favorite castle!
I hope this becomes a series.. I like this video!
👑
Thank you so much...
🏺
Historical information is very valuable.
💐
PS: Sorry for my poor English. 😔
I love how history tells us the real story of game of thrones I have read the book fire and blood and it tells similar stories except it’s fantasy and I just like the real history. 🥰🥰🥰
Wow!! Great video!! So cool you got to visit as a kid and then again as an adult to make this fantastically entertaining and informative video. As always well done. Looking forward to the next video! ❤
I was lucky to go there a few years ago. It is beautiful!❤
Please do more visits to castles and great houses where history was made or where historic people lived. This was a wonderful and very informative video.
I visited Leeds Castle in 2006 and absolutely loved it there. I did have a bit of a giggle at Lady Bailie's aviary though. There are some amazing exotic birds there, including the Australian White Ibis, known to us Aussies as the bin chicken. They are everywhere over here, getting into rubbish bins, pooping everywhere, and generally annoying people. Personally I love the cheeky buggers, but I never really thought of them as being particularly exotic.
Love the Elenor Dream House !!💕
Joan of Acre was an ancestor of mine. It’s interesting to hear about all my ancestors. I am also related to William the conqueror by his half brother
I went to Leeds Castle as a child. They had a hot air balloon that we went on after.
I was like Oh a beautiful castle in Leeds? I gotta go! And then I was like Oh
Great episode.
Loved this!
Just a wonderful effort, thank you so much!
Awesome segment! Very i nformative. Love to know the historical background. Thank you.
Excellent video!!🤩
Very interesting thanks for sharing.
Thanks for sharing 💕💕
Fun programme. A very small point: the late Duchess of Kent was Princess Marina (of Greece and Denmark).
Excellent video!
thank you for sharing your wealth of knowledge
Im loving your Videos
It would be great to see a video on Chateau Chenonceau, the Ladies’ Castle of France
a wonderful viceo, truly, I love to bits1
Loved seeing you
So interesting! Love your videos ❤
Fiarte frumos ❤❤❤
I visited Leeds Castle in 2001. It was very impressive, despite being swathed in scaffolding.
You hooked me right off. The literal place of conception of the _Tudors._ A little racy but ok. Then it's location. I would have argued hard that it is in Leeds. Because the Brits are good at that, naming stuff for being near other stuff. I love that. Easy to follow and all.
Brilliant video ❤, it's a wonderful day out/ overnight stay if you like too. Just to note that the M20 motorway is very close by unfortunately. However it makes it very easy to get to! Hope all is well with you.
Crazy that I listened to a podcast about Eleanor of Castile this morning...what are the chances
Actually, Henry VII's claim to the throne was through his mother Margaret Beaufort, a descendant of John of Gaunt (a son of Edward III). Prince George's wife was Princess Marina, not Marianna, of Greece and Denmark. Barbara Hutton and Cary Grant were known as "Cash and Cary" (hopefully younger people know what the phrase means). Very good video.
omg i love this channel
So the Tudor family started with a butler?
Found very interesting
Why Margaret of Anjou and Elizabeth Woodville didn't live in leads castle?
I would love to have been a nosey little fly on the wall at Leeds Castle during all those lavish parties 👀
I would like to know more about the Lady Bailey era of Leeds Castle.
Her grandson wrote a book about her and the castle
This gives me another idea for a video request: witchcraft accusations in the uk and elsewhere.
I had no idea that Leeds Castle had such a history involved with slavery! Owners with lands in Virginia and Eli Whitney inventor of the cotton gin which further slavery in the US. Wow
Eli Whitney didn’t own slaves, and in fact, he *thought* his invention would reduce the need for slaves and hasten the end of slavery. It didn’t work out that way, but neither did the cotton gin bring him the wealth it could have had he handled patents and manufacturing differently. To say Leeds is connected to slavery is a gross oversimplification. That’s like saying the Tower of London is connected to slavery because Phillis Wheatley visited there.
I would like to visit Leeds castle
So was it Leed's Castle and over the years the apostrophe got dropped or has it always been Leeds?
I really enjoy your videos. Just one suggestion, please review your closed captioning? the auto captions that youtube applies can be really bad, making it difficult to understand what you're talking about. thank you!
In the United Kingdom, one goes on “holiday.”
_Moral of THAT story..._
Don't cuck your wife with your homeboy and don't give her stuff away to your bodyguard. For if you do, she may run back to her family and tell them how heinous you're being. This, in turn, could lead to your boyfriend being publicly mutilated to death and you "finding _YOURSELF"_ hopelessly "lost" for time infinitum haha
7 Husbands? Very Evelyn Hugo of her. (Please tell me at least one person gets this reference)
Good book!
I had to go Google that!! Looks like a good read!
First view and first comment!!
Henry VII"s claim was through his mother, not his grand-mother. His mother descended from Edward III through John of Gaunt.
Is anyone else here noticing how many of Lady Baillie's celebrity guests were secretly queer? I'm gonna guess that kind of discretion was one of the main draws.
Lovely video, thank you Lindsey. Just one thing... it's Princess Marina not Marianna. 😀
Can you make a story of King James 2 of England Please🥺❤️🙏😭
"Princess Mariana"....seriously? LOL
Can you make a story of James 2 of England pls🥺🙏🙏💗
*16* CHILDREN?!?! 16?????!?!!!!
This isn’t that far. From where I live
❤❤❤❤❤
