Congratulations 🎉 for your channel, it's beautiful the country life. How long takes the sheep milk to get spoiled?, Is it possible get butter from the sheep milk?, How long takes for the cream get separated off the sheep milk?, Do you think sheep milk loses properties if you freeze it?
If you keep the sheep milk refrigerated, it shouldn't spoil quickly... I'm thinking maybe a couple weeks but that is purely a guess on my end. I'm not really sure. You can definitely make butter and the cream should separate after a day or so undisturbed. Enjoy!
Thank you for sharing! Im about to get East Fresian Ewes. I’m not finding much about sheep dairy. Do you make butter with your sheep milk? Is it about the same as making butter from cow or goat? Is the remaining liquid good as milk (like a skim milk)? Thank you!
Sheep's milk is typically double the cream and fat content as cow or goat milk so extremely valuable for butter and cheese making! You will find that there is only a tiny bit of "skim milk" left after skimming the cream. Some people don't even bother skimming it! Good luck with your new ladies!
When you milk sheep, how do you time how soon is safe to take milk, after ewes have just had lambs, and which are still young? Do ppl wait till lambs reach a certain# of weeks old?
I average about a quart a day milking 4 or 5 ewes. I can stretch out the milking season for about 5 or 6 months before I start to see significant decrease due to breeding, weaning, etc.
Similar flavor to cow's milk (mild and sweet) and definitely creamier... not as think as a commercial coffee creamer, but somewhere between that and whole cow's milk!
Do you make soft sheep cheese with the milk? I’m buying sheep milk from a neighbor and need help. She doesn’t make cheese. What culture should I buy, what temps etc please help if you can. Thanks!
Be careful of some mason jars, over time even in cold storage, they seem to develop something like rust near the inside top and rust poisoning is real, I believe it's why they removed Himalayan pink salt from store shelves somewhat recently, it contained iron but it was iron oxide
Hi William, We dont use pink salt but I was curious about your comment... Iron oxide is relatively benign. What they found in the salt were heavy metals... lead, cadmium, aluminum... definitely a problem, so a little rust is not a problem.
@@OurMaineHomestead believe they all are, I'm sure ingesting rust is bad though, there's got to be better storage options for people trying to prepare for the best like a assume you guys are
Rust is just iron oxide Fe, O, just donate blood or cut yourself to drain blood that's the only way to get rid of iron . I put my blood in a cup freeze it and feed it too my chickens they love it with milk
Yes! Definitely white like a goat... not sure if more dairy heavy breeds would produce more yellow-ish or not but the Katahdins I have produce white. I'm sure it depends on their diet too... No, we do not have any goats!
Are you getting that per sheep or total? We got about a quart a day from our Katahdin. He lamb died, so no sharing... but our merino produced a little over a quart a day sharing with two lambs. Are ours special, they’re terrible escape artists and planned to butcher them....
Micro Fiber clothes can keep your cost down.. they rinse out easy. they are durable.. run Hydrogen Peroxide over them .. doesnt hurt the fibers.. over time can save a bunch..
Looks like your ewes are pretty cooperative for you! I hope to start milking mine soon, we'll see how it goes 😊
We want to start milking our sheep as well! Thank you for a great video-
Thank you for sharing! Looking to bring dairy sheep onto our homestead this year :)
Thank you! I've been searching for videos how to manage the sheep's milk after milking and there is nothing out there..i truly appreciate you😊👏💛
So precious seeing all of the mamas and babies!
I enjoyed it

Good job with the sheep!
Greetings from Peru and i want to produce some day many sheep milk products
Do your lambs wean by themselves??

love this but was wondering what vaccines do you give your sheep per year ...new farmer here 🙂
We don't give them any vaccines.
At what age of the lambs do you start milking mom? Love this! Hoping to start my sheep dairy journey!
Typically around 4 weeks I'll start milking mom once a day!
How much milk per ewe?

How soon after the ewes lamb are you able to milk them? A couple days, weeks?
I typically wait about 4 weeks before I start milking them, but that's just a personal preference. You could begin before or after that time frame.
does the mum becomes distress when lamb is separated?
Not typically. They can see the lambs and vice versa through the slats of the dividing gate so I think that really helps!
Thanks for the explanation. ❤️

I typically wait until the lambs are about 4 weeks old!
How much milk on average do you get and for how long after the lambs are weaned?
I average about a quart a day milking 4 or 5 ewes. I can stretch out the milking season for about 5 or 6 months before I start to see significant decrease due to breeding, weaning, etc.
Thank you!
does the sheep milk taste like regular milk and is it thick like creamer or thinner like milk? thanks
Similar flavor to cow's milk (mild and sweet) and definitely creamier... not as think as a commercial coffee creamer, but somewhere between that and whole cow's milk!
Sheep milk is the best
Do you make soft sheep cheese with the milk? I’m buying sheep milk from a neighbor and need help. She doesn’t make cheese. What culture should I buy, what temps etc please help if you can. Thanks!
I haven't done any soft cheeses yet but plan to at some point! Let me know if you experiment and find a good culture you love!
Where do you buy sheep milk, need some and can't seem to find on the east coast yet!

The milk/cream is white!

That's total. Ours are not heavy milkers for sure but we love the little bit we do get from them!
you keep talking about ewes but what about mes.

I have one of those things where I hate how microfiber feels! Gives me the icks!
Please lose the music- you are great without it!
