    This is my friend David car. He has owned it about 18 yrs now. He bought it with about 90k miles on it and has slowly gotten it up to 148k now. i dont need to tell anyone that is low miles if you are looking at this you know this is nothing for this car! It needs a couple of things. the a/c needs to be gone thru. it was all original and finally quit a couple of summers ago. It needs a glow plug relay and a few other odds and ends but it is overal in amazing shape he has spent very good money keeping this car up but he drive the 53k mile 2009 4 runner now and his better half drives the new tundra. I may get my hand on the old tindra it is really in better shape than i thought enjoy this video!

    These ‘95 E300 Diesels are impressive cars on so many levels. Beautifully styled and constructed, they are solid and comfortable, with reassuring handling and a beautiful ride. A friend of mine in California is the original owner of a pristine 227,000+ mileage example, and he’s not parting with it. It’s easy to see why.

    This brings up childhood memorys. My father had one of those when I was a kid and it was by far the most reliable car we've ever had. It had driven over 600,000 miles with no engine issues. the only problem with them is rust and newer emission standards in Germany which means you can't really drive them anymore.

    A couple of years ago, I test drove a pristine 55,000 mile '96 210 E300 Diesel -- same engine and transmission as this '95 124 E300 Diesel. Nicest 210 I've ever seen by a country mile. Had the cash in my front pocket.
    Granted, the 210 is a bit heavier than the 124 (a quick google suggests ~150-200 lbs), but I just couldn't do it. It sounded great, and I'm not saying it hates to rev -- it doesn't... but it seemed labored and slow compared to the 85,000 mile '79 116 300SD Turbodiesel I had arrived in.
    While I continue to fantasize about my dream diesel Benz (124 wagon, built 606.96x, variable geometry turbo, ZF 8HP gearbox), I picked up a nice 102,000 mile '98 210 E300 Turbodiesel to tide me over. It's comfortable, more than fast enough to get me in serious trouble, sounds great, sips fuel, and it has a couple of nice "modern car" creature comforts. It even runs cool at high speed with a new radiator and water pump (METAL impeller!). When it inevitably rusts out because it's a 210, I'll have a good donor motor.
    You can't argue with the durability and economy of these late 124 Diesels... but for me, I gotta have boost!

    I had 1995 E300d with this engine. If you calculate hp per liter of displacement, it’s actually the most powerful naturally aspirated mass produced diesel engine - about 45hp/liter. It also has a nice flat torque curve 210 Nm/155 ft-lb @2200-4600rpm, that what makes it so smooth. Before that I had a 1991 3.0 turbo diesel (145hp), which was more powerful and faster, but I prefer the naturally aspirated one because it smoother.

    • @JoesGoldenGarage
      @JoesGoldenGarage  3 года назад

      I have had both as well and I agree. The only thing I could notice was the turbo was better on the freeway. A little bit. But it tended to run hot

    • @audriusbaranauskas6227
      @audriusbaranauskas6227 3 года назад

      @@JoesGoldenGarage Yes, the 3.0 turbo has a 2.65 rear diff whereas the 3.0 NA is 2.87 so the turbo is slightly better on the freeway, given that the final gear ratio is the same 1:1 in both cars.
      I live in Europe so both of my cars were european spec, and the 3.0 turbo had a separate engine oil radiator. Apparently, not all 3.0 turbo diesels had it, it was an option, sort of an "autobahn" version more suitable for high speed cruising, so i had no problems with overheating.

    i got to test drive one of these on the worst of our typically crappy US roads, it was among the most civilized of diesel cars i'd driven up to that point in terms of its noise level, which was almost as quiet as the gas cars at least at cruising speed. it was slow, i had to flatfoot it just to take off from a stop, and with foot to the floor eventually made it to 60 mph after a good 20 seconds or so. my dad's 300D 5-cylinder diesel actually felt faster. it rode like no other car [including old cadillacs], you just didn't feel any road bumps in this thing, not even raised railroad tracks registered inside the cockpit.

    "Its a little dirty they have dogs" Said as if having dogs entitles the dogs to make your car interior filthy. Its automatic. At the expense of the quality of the car interior. Dogs have two musk glands. One on each side of the anus. When they sit, the musk is transferred to the sitting surface. Once you have the musk oil in the upholstery, you will never get it out. You can cover it with scents, but you'll always have the musk. I can always tell if a car has had dogs inside of it. This generation is given over to dogs. They'd rather have dogs than children. They're a terminal generation.
