Slayer did groove metal on Diabolus in Musica. People hated it.
Megadeth did hard rock on Risk. People hated it.
Metallica did nu metal on St. Anger. People hated it.
Chris Cornell did pop rock on Scream. People hated it.
Linkin Park did pop rock on One More Light. People hated it.
Blink-182 are doing pop rock on Nine. People are hating it so far.
When established artists change their genre, it will always get hate from some fans.

I think everyone who listens to these bands misunderstands the tone, probably because they're too young to get it. Not a stab, it's a fact.
All these bands are going back and talking about WHAT IT WAS LIKE TO BE YOUNG. They're not trying to be something else. They're very much themselves still. Though generations look back on the 90s and early 2000s with nostalgia, this was actually a VERY painful time for the youth. Hence the slower beat: they've slowed down in age, this song is about reflection.
This is honesty at its best in music. Thanks Blink. Cheers boys, your generation still understands the pain, even if now only understands the colours. To quote OLP, we are all innocent.

  • @alltheinnocence

The music may have evolved but the lyrics haven't. My problem with the song is that it seems disingenuous, like he's trying to write rebelious lyrics but he has nothing to rebel against. Also this song instrumentally is horrible, it's bland and tasteless which is suprising when you consider that this is a blink 182 song. I’m no music critic but here are my gripes:
-The flow is predictable. You always know what the next verse is going to be. It feels like mark is doing all the lyric writing while Matt copies what mark did but makes it “different”.
-It feels like there trying to do what FOB did almost a decade ago, change there genre. There’s a 6 letter word that comes to mind for FOB. Worked. I feel like Blink is trying to change there genre but they did it to late.
-It feels like they went back on there word. If I’m not mistaken Tom wanted to progress as an artist with Blink. Mark didn’t want that. He wanted to keep the band punk. Look what happened.
I’m still a blink fan but I don’t like where this band is going

I agree, but with a different end of the stick.
Matt adds the predictability/ genericism; uncreative lyrics (arguably predictable if you pay attention to Matt's style), the "wayyyyy-oooo" styled choruses and outros where it sounds like a crowd is singing.

I'm fine with bands changing and evolving, but that's not really what happened here. I defended them when it came to Neighborhoods and Dogs Eating Dogs, because that was an actual natural progression of their music. California was okay too, even if Matt was still just getting his bearings.
For NINE though, Blink barely even wrote the songs for this album. It would've been nice to see more songs actually written by Blink themselves, rather than mainstream pop songwriters like Sam Hollander or Ali Tamposi. Only On Some Emo Shit is completely written by Blink.
