I have avios and I have 8000 but I can’t really figure out how to redeem them. The British airways app tells me I need 120’000 for flights etc.

Is that for points only flights? You can upgrade on BA or any airline for less than that, I converted mine to Qatar points and I needed 12,000 to upgrade to biz class. Or you can search for your flight and see if there's an option to pay with points
