    Been stuck many times in remote central Florida soft sand... best points of this video. 1. when you feel you are getting stuck do not spin, just STOP and get out. 2. deflate tires 3. The advice on rocking back and forward (without spinning) to harden the ground! I have also found it valuable if you have access to water and debris wet the dig and fill it with debris (I have tones of pine cones where I am and they work great. But nothing like the peace of mind that comes with planning, letting somebody know where you will be and being ready with recovery gear, emergency supplies, charged tools and even provisions to last you a few nights... oh and never panic, if it get's dark, set camp and crack open a beer.

    Dude this happened to me a few years back. I was driving through sand in the California desert and came across an old shack I wanted to check out. Got out and looked around for 4-5 minutes and when I came back MY TRUCK HAD SUNK TO THE AXLES LOL. No biggie I’ll dig it out... nope. My son had pulled out my short shovel to play with a few days earlier. Had to dig the whole thing out using nothing but a tiny piece of brittle stucco from one of the walls. Took FOREVER LoL
    Great video. Made my laugh so hard when you said, “ now you can’t get upset because it’s your fault you’re in this situation”. Those were my thoughts exactly.

      "You can’t get upset because it’s your fault"? I don't know, I find that swearing makes me feel better. After a minute or so of cursing, take a few deep breaths, have a drink of water, cool down and get on with it. It worked for me, especially as the two times I got seriously bogged were 100% my fault.

    I just want to say thank you, I only watched this video about 4 weeks ago, just before I went on a road trip. About a week ago in cape range national park I got severely stuck on the beach, it then occurred to me that I had no recovery gear and the tide was rising fast. Remembered back to this video and it definitely saved my arse and my car, I am definitely ordering a big windscreen sticker to show my appreciation. You are an absolute legend.
    P.S I absolutely love your videos and have got my brother interested in them too.

    Wish I watched this before getting stuck in soft sand on a wide Murray river beach we had never planned to drive on. Hadn't planned to go off road so had nothing to get us out. The old prado was stuck just like this but on a 30 degree left to right slope so couldn't pitch the roof top tent. Slept on the sand overnight and worked out I'd have to do exactly what you showed on the vid. Used my hands to totally clear the undercarriage, made a sand ramp to reverse out, dropped tyre pressure and emptied the car of all the camping gear to lighten it. Reversed straight out after all that and saved ourselves a grand quoted by some bloke to come get us out. Only extra I did was try and lighten the car by emptying it. It was refreshing though to watch this and think yeah we did the right thing! Great vid mate as can guarantee from experience it works.

    There was one other thing you could of done. That wood you found if you lashed it to the tire so the length of the stick was side to side of your car, as you drive the stick acts a bigger foot print for the car and lifts it out of the sand. I have used that a couple of time when I have been really stuck.

    I had to do this when I ran across a patch of sleet in the wood's. This was in the spring, so it was unusual to have any deep snow especially sleet left. I was about 4 miles in the woods bogged to the chassis. No one had been through yet that spring. Lucky for me I had a small shovel so that saved me a ton of time. I will remember to bring a bigger shovel and air down for the future. Great tips, thanks for the video.

    Great stuff. I cut my teeth on the beaches in WA (Geraldton and Margs) and out in the desert (Warburton) and it was only today I was explaining to a young guy that was bogged on Blacksmiths Beach the exact same method (Even did it with the Car Advice guys when they bogged their test Prado in front of us! They didn't know about it.) Back in the early 80's there was none of the fancy recovery gear or RUclips vids so we were fast learners and this was a method we worked out with trial, error, bogging and swearing! Excellent vid.

  • @brutusp6237
    @brutusp6237 5 лет назад

    I like to hit the beach with about 20lbs and drive as far as it will go on that. When it starts to bog down I will drop to 16lbs and continue. It if it starts to bog down on 16lbs I would drop to 12lbs and start to consider if it will get softer and whether I should go back the way I came. If you go down close to your minimum you might not have much in reserve to get out which is a concern if on a narrow beach with a tide coming in. The other advantage is that I find that often I can get along without going down to a very low pressure and it saves me having to spend so long pumping the tires back up. Not sure if that is a good strategy but thought I would share it as it always has worked for me.

    When I was taught to ride on sand I was always taught to count slowly on the first tire and then when it to the pressure you want go to the other and deflate them to the same count. Your tires will all be at approximately the same pressure if they were the same pressure to start.

    Good work. You have a sensible handle on presentation and on the practical process for somebody on the favourable end of the age timeline. I note it seems you are using the footbrake as a trap technique with an automatic transmission. An added technique which is helpful is to back off power as soon as the wheels roll against the sand ramps at the ends of the packdown you have started. You trap the car on the sand ramps with the brakes rather than let it roll back onto the packdown. Hold on the brakes firmly as you change gear. Gently power up then release the brakes. There is a tiny downhill which helpfully adds to motion you can use when you extend the packed down wheeltracks. When mining under the vehicle make plenty of space for yourself and clear the centre first before mining out the wheels. If the sand slumps from under a wheel, the vehicle may settle on top of you. Front-wheel drive cars are also responsive to this technique. Rear wheel drive cars, less so because of the lighter proportional weight over the driving wheels and big heavy engines over the front wheels pushing them in deep.

    @austinshackles549 5 лет назад

    Good video, exactly right about the digging. Same applies in soft snow, except it's a damn sigh colder doing the digging part. The only thing I would add, when you try to move the truck initially, use as little power as you can get away with to make it move, less risk of spinning a wheel and making it dig back in.
    Also, if you drive on sand a lot, get sand tyres; mud terrain pattern are way too aggressive :)

    I know you said no tools but I use a small gardening spade (don't know if that's what you guys call it) for digging under cars in snow to winch them out. Better then using your hands when a big shovel won't fit under the vehicle. Police made fun of it once when I was pulling a car out of the ditch. "They won't buy you a real shovel?" I told him "leave my shovel alone cause it's fucking awsome!"

    First thing in sand, keep up the momentum. Don't kick the acelerator, if you find yourself slowing down, stop before you bog and down the tyres a bit. Saves an exhausting recovery.

    Where did you get that shovel? It looks like a keeper. Great channel.

    Recently was on some heavy sand and ahead of my car was a Volvo s40 stuck solid on the beach. After I discovered his pressure was 3 bars I wanted to leave him for being an idiot. But we eventually got him out after deflating and using tow ropes.
