Respectful suggestion: Lay down several coats of "weld through primer" beneath the new metal to be welded in place -- that will help prevent future rusting.
I did a lot of jobs with that primer excellent product!
It will still rust at the welds if not primed after.
Very good stuff tho
If all the rust hasn’t been removed then there’s really no reason to be concerned about it rusting. (other than to make something look presentable for a short amount of time). Most car guys have seen repairs made on rust holes, wear a wire screen, or even newspaper, has been stuffed in a hole and bonded over. It looks OK for a while. Chad has said many times he doesn’t care if the car is operational as long he thinks it looks good when hes done. It really just depends on what your goal is. There is a reason why Ford made the Thunderbird looks the way it did when it rolled off the assembly line
No matter what time will take back metal, it's all about how you take care of a car. They paint the California bay area Golden gate bridge every day 24/7 390 day's a year if they don't Mother nature will reclaim it. Unless a car is made out of plastic it will take a little longer, but even then if plastic is left in the weather it to will soon break down. Even if you powder coat pips and bury it in the ground it to will break down. My Nephew is a painter they have painter's in the mine's in Nevada painting inside the mine's all day everyday because of the moisture underground causes rust metal will turn back to earth where it came from. The only thing that will last in or on earth is pottery you can bury it for a million years and dig it back up and it will still be pottery.
It's sure refreshing in these times to see someone like Chad who has the skills and the fortitude to jump in and fix things. Today we have a throw away society. Oh how I would love to go back to the 50's and 60's Where for me anyway life was a much better time with people that actually knew how to fix things and work with their hands.
That was because things during that time were much simpler, easy to work on, but more importantly, they didn’t break as fast. Everything today is computerized and you need a degree to work on all this garbage.
I've been thinking for the last couple of weeks that I really enjoy the fact that you, (Jolene) have been wearing the microphone more often. It's awesome when we can hear you add your thoughts and ideas to Chad because it's easy to be engrossed in what's going on and then you hear a different perspective. Chad always heard them but so many times we don't. So thank you. Great call on unplugging the grinder while Chad was struggling with the blade. I was thinking it and the moment I said it to myself, you said it Jolene.
I live in Redding California which is north of San Francisco. I have a close friend that has a 57 E bird ,he has had it for 10 + years. The motor and chase has all been completely redone, I just can't get him back to work on the body. Has a bad 1/4 panel and a bad a couple other places that need repaired. It has a bard top, soft top and European top. Your bird looks a lot like his 57. I have him watching this to show him he can fix it, and need to get back to. Love watching you both.👍💕🇺🇸🇺🇸
Always great when Chad makes hard jobs simple.
What brand stripper would you recommend Chad
Personally, I like a blonde
Last time i did this to a irreplaceable hood, i cut out or peel back what i can, just as chad has done, then sit the hood vertically in a length of guttering filled with vapor rust remover or some other similar rust remover liquid and leave it for a few days. Then repeat on the other side. Obviously you can use containers to match the shape of whatever you are doing. Fender bottoms I sit in rectangular containers with bricks in the bottom to raise the liquid level and be as economical as possible.
Then rinse off. You can then guarantee every trace of rust is removed before further welding repairs are done.
At the end I'll pour por15 or equivalent in the repaired areas and let it flow.
Obviously a perfectionist way of doing things but it will keep the rust at bay for years!
Chad & Jolene! Your Work Ethic Is Amazing! Motivated! Tinacity! Responsible! And Yet, Having Fun With What You Do! You Both Are A Rare Breed! I Know That I Sure Look Forward To Your Daily VNideos! (YES! EVERDAY VIDEOS!) Who Else Can Say/Do That! EVERYDAY!
I'm lost on how you are doing the back window. Are you putting glass in it or are you going to make an acrylic window and curve the contour? If glass, how do you get the bow in it? Will a glass shop be able to just make it and bow it? Sorry if you already answered these questions, I didn't ever catch your answers. It looks pretty good, could have been bigger. I look forward to watching your videos every day. Thanks for the great entertainment.
that window looks like a mailbox
I liked the design until you messed with the back window. Should have found a way to keep large stock one!
In order to conform to the extended and modified rear deck, Chad had to go with: A) a full-sized rear window identical to the stock piece but slightly shorter, or B) install a sheet metal panel and fabricate a smaller window frame to set in it. I agree that he picked the wrong way to go, design-wise. (There is also a C option, but that would be a lot of work.)
One more thing, to the Queen you should and basically are a dam pro, the smoothness that you move with the camera, slowly over here to there… even while giving a hand at times, the angles the movement yet not we just want to give out a shout to you directly, your the best on RUclips period keep him Rocking, and much love from us both!!! 💕
It's ok to weld pin holes but you have to remember that if you have multiple pin holes then there are other places that are pitted underneath also just ready to break through , so that's why rustproofing is so important. If not rustproofed right away you will definitely have rust bubbles breaking through in a short time .
Great job Chad…but this hood lip repair brings back bad memories…of my days working in the body shop. You make it look so easy though I must say. Really enjoy watching you. You’re amazing. Can you please remind folks how important it is to always wear good protective eyewear when grinding? Ill never forget getting metal in my eye twice back in those rust bucket repair days…when I worked on 60’s-70’s cars back in the late 70’s-early 80’s. Always wore glasses/goggles but I had the awful habit of wiping my sweaty brow on my shirt and that’s how I think it happened…at least once. But still, I remember those little red hot sparks of metal getting in/around my glasses too. Was brutal…couldn’t get to the eye doctor quick enough to get that tiny speck of metal removed under microscopic lens because it had rusted to my eyelid…every blink scratched my eyeball. Was so painful. Always had affected eye patched afterwards for a few days too…had to put eye salve in etc. Was bad. Be careful Chad keep up the great work. Really enjoy you. I’m in Rochester, NY area near south shore of lake Ontario. Have 5 old 50’s-60’s Mopars that I keep running and on the road. Therefore I’m really looking forward to watching you work on your 56 Savoy one day soon. God bless you both. Hi Jolene…you’re doing a great job too! You make a wonderful couple!
Chad, do you think that the hood will continue to rust under the piece you put in? you just used a paint over it. why not sand blast it or liquid rust remover. Then put a weld through primer on it. Just asking.
Looking good chad,,I like the back window too,it’s comeing out great, the hood is kinda a bugger but your getting it done,,thanks to dug for his help,,hi to Jolene an fina too, luv ya’s,👍👍😀
Watching from Arizona. Every day that Chad comes up with fixes just amazes me. Keep up the great work, Chad and Jolene.
Chad, the metal majician.❤
I had the same problem with the bottom of a door on one of my cars. I just very carefully ground along the bottom to get rid of the rust and the lip. I then made a new piece and very carefully welded back along the edge until it was straight and smooth.
Holy crap Chad is brave going ham on that grinder nut like that with it still plugged in. 😂😂😂😂
I thought the same thing, he was going to mess himself up bad if he accidentally hit the power button. Imagine what that would do to denim, flesh, and bone if it cuts through metal like butter.
Always make sure your grinding wheels are tightened up by hand before you hit the trigger. If they are only threaded on 75% of the way and you hit the trigger, it will lock the blade on tighter than all get out. On my larger grinders, I usually use a washer that helps prevent them from getting jammed on
@@i8ntnuts I know they do because they are backwards threaded, we are talking about him taking the disk off while it was still plugged in and him having issues getting it off. One little slip and he is now a transgender.
No doubt in my mind Chad is a metal magician. Jolene is amazing as usual on the camera and Fina looking great as always. 🇺🇸🇨🇦🎥🍿
That’s for sure 😊
And they are "On Air"! Wow.
I would love to show you a injury I sustained doing what you were doing with a cutoff wheel and NOT unplugging the Tool. With respect.
A lot of us have had to learn the hard way
Grinder with no guard and a zip wheel equals disaster
I ended up with 21 stitches last year using the same setup
when I do these sorts of repairs I normally drill out the spot welds and lift up the folded edge to get out the rusted piece ,replace new metal, fold lip back down and reweld drilled out spot welds . great work cheers from Bunbury Western Australia
Love the roof chop , hate the rear window. great job on the hood repair
Thank you for sharing your work and experience and Jolene is doing a fantastic job too, love sent from Toledo Oregon we watch you daily, Doug & Marina Medeiros
Thank you. That was very useful information about sharpening that disk by cutting through some steel.
Rust repair on the hood is not going to be hard - Chad has a simple method in mind. Jolene makes another great video :)
Yes surely
It can be very difficult doing body work to a hood chasing a dent around the hood. I've done a few it takes many hour's to get it right. That's the main thing people see when they are driving there automobile is the hood, so that is something on the car I had to get right. That would piss someone off if they paid lot's of money to have there car body work done then looking at a ding on the hood.
Chad you don't have issues you got solutions ain't a problem you can't fix
As Chad would say that's one way to skin a cat! Getting it done.👍🏽
Yes dealing with a hood you have to take your time of not warping it so you have to be careful and take your time or you'll make a small job into a bigger job.
I once had a GTO hood trunck kid and door bottoms that were all rusted in that area. I flap risked the edge through and separated front from back. Wasn't bad to weld the edge back and fix gaps. I found it went faster for me. My rust was clean through in many places. Whitling at it from behind just wasn't my way to do it.
Theirs no such thing as a easy rust repair. Chad makes it look easy. Hours and hours of repair work. Jolene really knows how to focus that camera on the work. Great job. Thanks for the tricks and tips Chad.
REDO THE BIRD'S BACK WINDOW!
My mind is telling me he would like to kick you in the back window😂
It's awful.
Hi Chad, I haven’t done anything like this so I am thinking from a practical perspective. When you started this hood work would it have been useful to make a profile out of cardboard to get cross sections across the hood line that you are replacing? That way in my mind it makes less guesswork out of the refit after everything is cut out and cleaned. Again I enjoy your and Jolene’s work.
Jolene is excellent on the camera, when Chad is welding, she zooms right in so far, my eyes get burnt, when zip cutting, I need safety glasses lol. There is no doubt you know down to the molecular lever of how that welder is welding an that zip wheel is cutting. That's some camera work folks, she brings you into the action.
G'day,
Queen Jolene and King Chad.
👸🫅
Awesome video guys. With Jolene's tremendous camera work watching your welding Chad is a huge teaching aid.
My story: my latest project is a 67 split window kombi panelvan. Its a project car i purchased off someone cheap. Why you ask. Good question. Well the van was pulled apart for chemical dipping and in doing so they put every single nut and bolt into a drum un market. Its a nightmare. 😢
So anyways thanks for sharing ✌️ Peace from Melbourne Australia.
Well first we think the world of you guys, and my wife has spent years watching me come home and getting right on Rod after Rod in my life, and I have done body work since I was a kid (I’m 60) and I have never seen a POS rusted out hood be fixed in such a way, Fan Tastic and should prove to all that you are more than an Artist you’ve done it again!!!
You’re a bad ass and truly deserve the handle Bad Chad no wonder the Queen Jolene is your lady!
Where loving this project thank for letting us in to watch!!! 👍
Love how you make things look simple!!
It is all simple for Chad and Jolene.
Chad missed an opportunity to endorse Krown Rust proofing. It stops existing rust in it's tracks. It's worth every penny.
Curious,.... Chad you mentioned that if a person sandblasted a hood or trunk there is a high risk that it could deform it, I was wondering if it was blasted using walnut media instead of sand media if it would also cause deformation, or the risk of ? Or is it because it is coming out at high pressure that causes the deformation? thank you.
It’s the heat that causes the problem. Even if you can’t feel the panel as hot. Each little piece of sand puts a tiny dent in the panel and expands the metal that metal hast to go somewhere. If only a small amount of stretching has been done, you can sometime catch up to lift some heat from a torch to shrink it
The back window looks great
That grinder is part of the family. It has done some work.
I do know people have give you a hard time about undercoating, I do agree with you, but I got a question, people eas told me they make a weldable Primer., have you heard of this and have you tried it? I'm asking because I don't do enough to know if it works and haven't seen.
Thank you
Gary USA
Good job you showed me how to repair a hood 👍😎
Looks good Chad
Never see this done before . Of course I seen someone future out the rust and replace it with new ,etal but not dpot welding ! Dully noted . Thumbs-up Jolene and Chad I'm learning every day !
Big shout out to Doug ! Thanks for stopping by to help out Chad! Thumbs-up Jolene and Chad and Doug
Keep up the good work. Always enjoy watching the videos.
am impressed with the back window work but not the design but i have faith that Chad has a vision
You put some lacquer thinner on that edge it will show you the spot welds and you can drill them out 💥💥
Nice work.
GRACIAS CHAD JOLENE SON MUY AMABLES POR TOMAR SU TIEMPO TAN VALIOSO Y CREAR MUY BUEN CONTENIDO GRACIAS A LOS DOS Y A TODOS SUS SEGUIDORES 👍😁
With each project we get to see different methods to replacing, adding and fixing metal.
Thank you for sharing with us “your” way.
Chad, you are a metal sculptor for sure. love you work.
I had the same thing happen to me with my angle grinder a few months ago and bent the crap out of the tool too! Your channels so much better than anything MSM has to offer, love what you guys do keep it up!🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Yeah good patch work on hood that get rid of the rust keep up the good work and great camera by Jolene
great show on the hood repair. that is something the back yard or small garage guy can use to fix up his old pile of rust. thanks
Good idea to unplug the grinder when you change the grind wheel
I am not quite sure how many Wizards there are on RUclips, but Bad Chad is definitely one of them and as always Queen Jolene captures his magic realtime !
You're the man to do it
Chad is the man! Such a wealth of pragmatic wisdom.
Some of us know how hard to cut that lip off of there is an not damage the hood skin, but it's the only thing to attempt to do like metal surgery lol
Channel locks work well for removing cut wheel lock nuts when you lose the grinder tool wrench
Just asking how ld is Fina
Don’t forgetting to like and leave comments to help Jolene grow the channel. They deserve all the help we can give them
we deserve a finished project, but we don’t get that either. They are going to start losing viewers if they don’t start finishing cars.
If you know much about building the car, it shouldn’t take you very long to figure out what’s going on here. I think he deserves some credit for doing the best he can.
@@i8ntnuts he does great work if anyone could just get him to complete something before moving on to another project.
This is definitely not Bad Mr. Chads first rodeo! 👍
WATCHING IN VANCOUVER WA YOU FOLKS ARE FANTASTIC, THANK YOU FOR ALL THE GOOD THINGS YOU DO AND TEACH!!
Zip lock sandwich bags are the best bags to use for your bolts. Depending on the brand some come with a white panel printed on the bag for writing on.
I always took pictures as well, especially if it is something complex to put back together
@@ReedThomas71 I also shoot video of complex stuff and narrate whilst filming it.
Back window area looks great, good work.
Glad Jolene got Chad to unplug the grinder while trying to get the zip cut disc broke loose.
Great rust repair learn something everytime I watch ... thanks chad ..
Jolene always looks amazing and doing a great job on the camera
You certainly have a way with metal fabrication Chad. Nice work and as always great videos and close ups from Jolene.
I feel your pain on that grinder arbor nut. I’m a woodworker and spent 45 minutes today looking for the table saw arbor nut which I dropped today. Finally found in the dust collector hose.
I hate wasting time looking for something like that. Can be so aggravating. Especially when it’s something you just had in your hand or something to remember just seeing only a minute ago.
It’s amazing how those little things can get lost as if they just disappeared
I'm currently in a similar, yet different, situation.
It's been a couple of months since I last used my sanding block.
Looked high and low for it this afternoon. But couldn't find it.
So first thing tomorrow morning, heading to the store to buy a new one... knowing full well, that I likely will find the one that I already have...when I no longer need it.😁
@@i8ntnuts Gremlins! 😳
@@i8ntnuts Being an old codger I have learned my lesson and now I'm pretty good about using magnetic mechanic's trays when I disassemble stuff. I even use them to organize new project hardware before assembly. But when you drop it into the black hole and can't find it or worse yet you can see it but the magnet keeps getting caught on everything but what you want to retrieve you just want to pull your hair out. This was a pretty special nut (large and thin) so if I didn't find it it would have shut me down for a good while.
Nice job Chad and Jolene Its looking good
Great work.
Love that pneumatic hole punch !! Putting my hand Whitney on the shelf !! God Bless U guys !!
In use rust encapsulator product. Works very well!
Chad next time the disk nut on the dewalt grinder cannot be removed. use a pair of Channellock's to grab onto the flange nut. This happens to me often. I do not use the spanner wrench no longer
For just a couple seconds I thought he was going to call in Jim with his magic wand, gas torch LOL.
The small rear window makes the roof top look taller
Haircut!
At the end of your videos, can you do a walk around of the T bird so we can get a full look see. Thanks.
You are the master!! Chad you are amazing !! Jolene you are a Professional in your camera skills. You guys amaze me every day. I watch every day. From Adrian Michigan. Thank you
Great videos and are just what people want to watch. It’s a lot easier than joining a car club
Awesome, Thanks
This is every good content excellent teaching in this segment , thk you Jolene for the great camera work
Simplified repair but not a permanent one. There's still rust under that new lip he welded in so the rust will just start eating into the untreated back surface of the steel. Wire wheel and a coat of paint on top will not stop it for long. Unless you get every spec of oxidisation out of the steel it will return but if he finishes the car he won't but keeping it for years so I suppose he doesn't care about it long term.
Looking great! Love the build😀😀
Hey I like watching shows I learned quite a bit this is how much I like your shows I am sitting in the hospital right now a 3 valve bypass in Little Rock Arkansas
Need to get you some of that weld able primer
Pretty soon the introductory’s going to be “Hi I am your woman good Jolene”. Lots of fabricators out there that would put her to work I’m sure. I was thinking she would probably get bored with them. She might even say something like “ are you going to do some work or just stand there all day?” Haha
Amazing job! I just would have liked him to sand blast a little of the rust under the new pieces too. The paint helps tho. Amazing work and I learned a lot.
Chad on the back of the hood itself put that coating on that turns rust to a printable surface😅
A mixture of of 75% muriatic acid / 25% water works great . Used it many many times . Let it sit 20-30 min. , it will fume and turn green , rinse well w/ water , blow with air or heat gun , repeat if nec'y . Cheers
Works great for what? Rust removal?
@@perdleandsquoot yes sir , just stay well ventilated when ya do it . I put it in a Windex type spray bottle , or a plastic bucket etc , depending on the part . Prime it with the primer/ rust preventer of choice . Cheers
Good evening folks, looking great take your time you'll get it right. Be safe. Hi Jolene great job on the camera you rock
Doug must have had his V8 juice today !! He looks like a real Hemi in that engine compartment !!!
Great job on the edge of the hood. Nice to see Chad getting help in to get the front suspension put back together. Queen Jolene is on her game with the camera.
Nice job on the hood you saved a lot of money.
Impressive workmanship, skill and ingenuity on display here! (In front of and behind the camera!)
Great work once again guys! TAG & BAG your hardware, always if it's a big job.
This is where that pullmax would and some custom dies would work really nice. He needs to get that thing running.
I’m not sure what a pull max is. Maybe he can get his electrician to take a look at it.
@@i8ntnuts Hi! i8ntnuts, It's the massive machine He bought last week. Thanks for asking
Amazing technique, Chad you are borderline wizard.
seeing how this is a nice car i kind of wish Chad used rust converter then a good coat of weldable primer but most likely the car won't see winter roads and a lot of rainy days so that hood repair should last 60 years, it's not like a daily driver
Looking very good awesome
Nice job on the hood looks great 👍. Great video work by Jolene as usual getting shots of Doug working in the background as she is filming Chad bravo 😮😊.
