Well, there's some points I'd like to make about Persephone: •The entire kidnapping was sponsored and ordered by Zeus, the primary source of this myth literally strips Hades of all blame except for slipping Persephone six pomegranate seeds •He told Persephone to return to Demeter (pronounced De-may-ter) after finding out about the Winter •Before her departure, Hades told Persephone not to be sad, for as his wife she shall be a Queen of Queens, and highest among the goddesses, for despite the delay, everyone becomes their subject eventually, and in the meantime he shall work to be the best husband he can be •Persephone shares equal power to Hades •They have the most functioning relationship in the whole mythology (except for maybe Eros and Psyche) •Every time someone tries to intrude on their relationship, one of them does something nasty to the intruder (e.g. Hades binding Pirithous to a chair with snakes and settung the Furies on him, along with Theseus; Persephone turned Minthe into a plant then stepped on her) Hades is actually a really nice guy who does his job, keeps his promises and loves his wife. People just hate him because 'Lord of the Underworld = Satan'. Also Hades is god of the Underworld, not death, that'd be Thanatos.
Yea unfortunately people don't know the difference between god of death and god of the dead Same case with Scáthach and the Morrigan Scáthach is the Goddess of the dead while the Morrigan is the goddess of death but many keeps thinking that Morigan is both the goddess of the dead and death

Hades is by far my favorite of the big three Greek gods; he took his job seriously, he absolutely adored his wife and when mortals came to him for a favor he would always give them a fair deal.
Agreed. He was less crazy then most of the other Gods, that's for sure! We just brought out a video on how he met his wife in more depth, you can find it on our channel
In the Percy Jackson books, Hades actually wasn't a villain. In fact, he helped Percy in the final battle against Kronos. He was a misunderstood God in the books. They screwed over him in the movies, though.
If I’d have to choose from the ‘Big Three,’ I would choose HADES. He was loyal to Persephone and he never cheated. Unlike Zeus and Poseidon. He kidnapped his future wife and so what? We all do rash things for the one that we truly desire. If you remember the story of Orpheus and Eurydice, Hades actually granted Orpheus’ wish to return his deceased love back to the living because Hades was moved by Orpheus’ love. I mean, Hades is deep. He is just misunderstood by his siblings because he isn’t taking advantage of his power like them. Dear mortals, it’s what we see in our society today. If you do not conform with the ‘status quo,’ then people would condemn you. Just like how the Gods are treating Hades. 😉
And his kidnapping of Persephone wasn't even controversial when you consider the context of the culture at the time. Before pursuing Persephone Hades went to Zeus (who's Persephone's father) and asked him for her hand in marriage which Zeus agreed to. In Ancient Greece it was the custom for men to ask the father's of their prospective brides permission to marry them, the brides themselves had no say in it. Once that was arranged it was a custom for them to make off with them. Also Hades actually to do a more modern way of proposing to Persephone but it was Zeus who suggested he should do a surprise abduction instead. This was probably because Demeter was such a overbearing smotherer that she wouldn't give her daughter up to anyone.
Acttualy one of the reason Hades never cheat beacuse Persephone is kind of Hera. One girl name Menthe who Hades seem to like her. And Persephone know that. She transform her become a aromatic herb name Mint.
Oh yeah I remember it being said some gods wanted to overthrow Zeus. Of course Hades naturally didn't take part in it. Though sometimes I think Olympus would be better off with Hades as king
He’s just chill guarding Tartarus so the evil Titans don’t escape Meanwhile Poseidon drowning humans And Zeus having affairs and babies with anyone but Hera
I only know really little of greek myths but one thing I really dislike is that every time there is a story based on greek myth, Hades is always the villain were there are others that could fill the role better: Ares and Hera being good examples heck even Athena is kinda villanous. That is one of the reasons I don't like Disney's Hercules and some modern takes on greek myths in media.
One example of Athena's villainousness is when she cursed Medusa just because Poseidon raped her on Athena's temple, paying an innocent for a guilty one
Zeus over Hera. She is completely justified in her anger at Zeus for his constant and ceaseless adultery and cheating, even if she did take out that anger on the mortal women. Zeus was a serial rapist and adulterer, wrathful, narcissistic perk who felt he could get away with whatever he wanted because he was the King of the Gods. Who could stop him?
Even Ares isn’t that bad. I mean, he’s the god of war so of course he’s gonna be violent. Besides, he was the patron god of the Amazons. AKA One of the most powerful groups of female warriors in Ancient Greece. He’s also one of the few gods who managed to sleep with women without resorting to his father’s dirty tricks.
@@avalasialove But he definitely is quite pathetic. IIRC he was scared shitless of Typhon and got locked in a barrel by 2 giants. And there are his squabbles with Athena.
It depends on which variation of the myths you look at, and some variations Persephone was happy to be in the underworld, and in others he kidnapped her. Also it’s completely understandable that he stayed away from the other gods, Zeus this wasn’t the best guy in the world and some of them were very arrogant and conceited. Either way this is a great analysis of hades. Edit: I posted this before the video was done! You basically said the same things!
Yeah we agree. It's kind of difficult to really know how she would of felt. Of course she wouldn't of like that she was kidnapped and forced into marriage. But on the other hand, she was made into the Queen of an entire domain and became pretty respected among the Greeks in a similar way to Hades. We're going to do a video explaining the story of how they got married in more depth soon
There’s also a few older versions where Persephone found an entrance to the underworld and just wandered in and like it there. She decided to stay, and eventually (due to stubbornness), she was allowed to stay by Zeus. Another thing not really mentioned a lot is that Hades offered a *shared* throne, rather than him being the King and her being queen but having no power (see Zeus and Hera). This is actually a big deal in that time since a lot of women were not seen as equal. Some argue Persephone ate the pomegranates knowing she’d be treated equal and she knew what she was doing, others argue it was all forced. Just depends who you ask and what version you read. :)
Tua, the tuatara I think they mean that Persephone would have equal influence and rule over the underworld as her husband. In many cases of royalty the King would call all the shots and have the final say in everything with the queen acting more as glorified advisor or ‘Tsu chef’ shall we say. But here, Persephone would have just as much involvement and say in the matters of the Underworld as Hades whether or not he was present because he wanted her to be his equal. Very respectful of him.
What I hate is when people think Hades hated the underworld and was tricked into having it. In some cases, he was actually portrayed as demanding the underworld to be his, as he didn’t think the other gods were capable of protecting it
"Evil and deceit" I'm pretty sure he actually seduced her in a few versions, and she definitely fell in love with him eventually (which probably was because he was actually a decent spouse unlike literally every other god and not stockholm syndrome), and the whole "six months" thing was actually because she ate food from the land of the dead and therefore could not leave permanently, but Hades actually let her leave for those six months every year, and Zeus has basically no part in the actual agreement from what i remember. Basically: You skim over stuff to make it seem like he's an edgy introvert who is better than the other gods but still a bad person, when in reality he is just a decent person who happens to rule the underworld. Hell, he willingly took the role as god of the underworld when he, Zeus and Poseidon were drawing lots to decide who got what, because he felt bad for the souls of the dead. Cerberus may have meant spotted, he named his gigantic three-headed helldog Spot, he is a giant nerd and a decent person. Also, he wanted to propose, but Zeus said "Nah, kidnap her instead" and probably through sheer annoyance managed to convince him to do it. When he saw how he scared her, he also apologized. Don't diss my man Hades.
I also heard cerberus means "cloud" in some other language, it was commented on other Hades related video, so I'm not 100% sure that's true, but I really like the thought of Hades naming his dog spot or fluffy XD
Your video needs some editing. -He did have a temple dedicated to him at Sila -Bit of a leap saying that just because he preferred to stay in his kingdom, that makes him bad -You are quoting Hesiod's version of events around Persephone. Whilst some versions have that he kidnapped and forced marriage, we would have to overlook that it was a common marriage ritual in a number of Greek city-states to kidnap your wife in order to show that you would be able to protect her in times of war. This was most commonly found in Sparta. Outside of Sparta, wedding vases would have Hades and Persephone on them, not Hera and Zeus, suggesting that even the ancient Greeks knew who had the happiest marriage. In some versions, he kidnaps her outright. In others, he seeks permission from Zeus as the father of the bride and preforms the traditional wedding ritual of bride kidnapping. In others, she goes down of her own accord. Also, think you should probably admit that Poseidon and Zeus both kidnapped and raped their wives themselves, so it's unfair to level that charge SOLELY on Hades because its the more well known story. -Hades is not the God of the Dead, he's the God of the underworld. Big difference.
Lest we not forget the BRIDE AND QUEEN'S opinion on being the widely worshipped God of Spring and Heaven in the form of the Elysian Fields. Because unlike the many brides of the Gods of sea and sky, the only bride of the God of Earth and Under was treated as all of her like should be: A QUEEN. Hades is literally "ALL WOMEN ARE QUEENS"
He is not evil, never harmed anyone without reason, he is perfectly fair on all of his deals, he is professional who is dedicating his whole time on his work, unlike his brothers. And the kidnaping part, you should look at it in ancient greeks perspective, cus form them it was more like a ritual rather than actual criminal act. This ritual still exist is greece, armenia and several other nations, and its had only ceremonial purpose. So no, Hades is many thing, but he ain’t cruel or deceptive. Kudos tu our introvert workaholic
Thank You!! Honestly, Disney version aside Hades wasn’t really that bad at all! He’s probably the only god that didn’t screw around with mortals or rape them as many did. His brothers Zeus and Poseidon were so much more evil compared to him. He’s also not just the god of the dead, but he’s also the god of blacksmith and money. Also, Hades didn’t chose to be the god of the underworld Zeus put him in that position (He is actually the oldest brother). And as you stated there are many different version on the story of Hades and Persephone. In many yes he did kidnap her, in some Zeus did promise him her hand, and in others Demeter was insanely protective of Persephone and she wanted the exciting underworld life Hades gave her, and they did fall in love too! Hades is overall my favorite greek god
Zeus didn't make Hades take the underworld. The three brothers of Cronus drew lots to decide who got what and Hades being the good big brother he was allowed his two younger siblings to go first and decide on which domains they wanted to rule and just took the underworld voluntarily.
@@jasonwemissyoucomeback Lmao. Zeus Simp. i saw another comment where you made an incoherent argument persisting zeus is heroic just because he freed his brothers from cronous' belly. you need to revaluate being a Zeustan.
"This story of abduction, truly shows how evil and deceiving Hades was." I dunno man, he DID ask Zeus for permission to marry Persephone first. The only deception was when he fed her the pomegranate seeds to bind her to the underworld. Compared to all the s*** the other gods did... he was pretty tame and collected.
He kidnapped and made her his wife against her will? Idk man I think he's a pretty bad guy. Even the ancient Greeks thought Hades was a bad guy, and the ancient Greek society had a lot more brutal and violent things and many terrible things were normal compared to today.
Hades didn't care for worship or offerings cause he wouldn't be swayed to take sides is very noble, also he knows that one way or another all mortals end up in his domain and under his rule. Hades is the most responsible of his brothers, preferring to stay home and do his job over going to Olympus and partying or chasing women. Hades may not have kidnapped Persephone, some versions say that she found her way into the Underworld herself and they both fell in love with each other.
Even the kidnapped versions also has things like taking her before her mother turned her into a tree so she could never leave. Also the underworld is where all mortals end up. That's a lot of company.
Honestly the story of Hades and his wife is one of the few that gets worse morally the further in the future you go. As far as I know, in earlier tellings, she did in fact fall in love with Hades. That’s one of the reasons there are next to no stories of Hades fooling around with mortals. In fact, a Nymph was flirting with him once, and then Persephone showed up and squashed her into mint. But with the rise of Christianity, the stories were recontextualized into making Hades a villain, because he was the devil stand in.
Hades, the nice guy/the quiet kid of Greek Mythology And you know you should never piss off anyone that's in charge with running the whole underworld by himself
So glad I am finally seeing justice for Hades. I had a teacher once who had a question on homework or something asking who we thought were good role models out of all the gods and heroes. I chose Hades as one of them and the teacher marked it as wrong! 🤬 I could understand that if you were asking which the GREEKS thought were good role models, but that wasn't the question. How do you mark an opinion as wrong like that? Especially when I gave my defense something similar to this video (though I didn't know all of this when I write it)?
Personally I always saw Hades more akin to the Egyptian god of the dead Osiris than to the Devil. That is he was a fair ruler and judge of the afterlife and not evil or malevolent. Its kinda funny how the Egyptian god of the dead who was a literal zombie isn't maligned by modern pop culture while his Greek counterpart who's very much alive is treated like Satan.
One thing I should point out is that Hades does offer assistance to the Olympians on a few occasions. For example, during the Gigantomachy, Hades is said to have lent Hermes the Helm of Darkness to help the latter fight the attacking giants. Also, in some versions of the clash against Typhon, Hades likewise lends the Helm of Darkness to Hermes when the latter went with Pan to rescue a then-incapacitated Zeus.
Basically Hades is the grumpy responsible sibling who tasked doing a job that he hates but still does it because his brothers are irresponsible jerks. On the brightside he is filthy rich, Has a wife that he really loves and has a goodest boi (probably the reason he rented the Cerberus to Hercules is because Hades wants his boi to take a walk but he can't due to responsibilities lol.)
Even though he's the villain in Disney, Including being my favourite villain of all time, also my favourite character of the "Jerkules" I knew Hades had his reasons, that's why I am glad to call him dad, HaHaHaHa
Let's be real if I had a family like Hades I would avoid them too, plus many sources sites that Zeus actually gave Hades a green light to take Persephone for his wife, so this was a more arranged marriage, yeah him kidnapping her was a bit dickish, but compared to his brothers and how they treated thair women he is pretty much a saint, plus when Persephone got the opportunity to leave, she wasn't really all that enthusiastic as she genuinely loved the guy and Hades treated her super well and never cheat on her unlike pretty much any other god. Also, Greeks feared him because they feared death itself, not because of his horrid actions, again like with the other gods. Therefore Hades is pretty much the coolest and nicest god in my books.
lightning and waves can crash at any moment's notice, causing mass destruction in their wake, and are hard to predict and untrustworthy. the dead, on the other hand, are all but pleasant memories when they pass.
I like how Hades (depending on the variant stories) honors his word and gives you a chance to prove yourself. While other gods would dismiss it, go back on their word, or trick and punish the mortal anyway. He allowed Hercules to bring Cerberus out of the Underworld if he could submit Cerberus without weapons. Despite that Cerberus not guarding the entrance would be a risk to his domain if anyone wanted to escape or enter freely. He allowed Orpheus to leave the underworld with Eurydice. As he was emotionally moved by his music and determination. Giving Orpheus a chance to leave with Eurydice without looking at her until both crossed to the realm of the living. But since Orpheus looked back and Eurydice hadn’t crossed to the realm of the living. Orpheus failed, and did not complete Hades’ agreement, despite the tragedy. He comes across as a lawful neutral personality, open to exceptions with strict stipulations. But he will show his wrath of you mess with him.
The way I studied it, Hades didn't spend a lot of time in Hades because he preferred the company of the dead, but because he was extremely dutiful and cared about doing his job well
Dude, I don't think we can even use 'he kidnapped Persephone' as an excuse to say he's evil... I mean at least he didn't shapeshift into a cow and kidnap a princess unlike a certain thundering Neanderthal brother of his😏
Hades is neither benevolent nor malevolent he actually is neutral since he cares not for neither mortals or God's he is the God of the underworld and punisher of evil but he is also the lord of darkness meaning it balances him as neutral. Poseidon is actually chaos as he's the God of the sea and causes most natural disasters and constantly interferes with humans out of boredom. And zeus is a Misanthrope whos father refused to acknowledge him sufficiently so he decided to murder the guy and take the Throne of Gods for himself. In short all gods are both malevolent and benevolent depending on their mood and level of boredom. The God who finds it funny to see humanity struggle though is ironically zeus not hades as hades couldn't give two fucks less about humanity i always see hades as megatron for some odd reason he's brash, unapologetic, ungodly powerful, and eternally bored 😂
Hollywood Directors making a new Greek movie: I wonder who I should make the villain for this movie? Ah tuck it I'll just go with hades again. I really hate that Hades is always portrayed as the bad guy Even tho he is the most responsible and probably the nicest Greek God Thank you to FGO for making Hades a chad
Hades was a saint in comparison to his brothers. He was the god of the afterlife in my opinion seeing as every mortal serves him eventually. And he was loyal to Persephone.
What you said here is true. Thank you for having weighed every piece of actual information we have from the Greeks about this god. If you're familiar with that chart that lists characters into crossed columns and lines with three categories each: "Lawful" "True" "Chaotic"; "Good" "Neutral" "Evil", I would say Hades could be a Lawful Neutral. I picture Hades as extremely powerful (he's a son of Cronos), as you said interested in other lifestyles than the Olympians, he is introverted in the sense that he is solemn and severe, dutiful, appreciative of his realm and its creatures, quiet, had invisibility (his own name means "he who isn't seen"), prideful but stoic, just and benevolent with the dead and the sincere and pious mortals, but merciless and terrible to those he punished.
One day well get a proper depiction of Hades in the media outside of Percy Jackson. Same with Ares, dudes not evil. Didn’t rape at all from what I know.
Don't forget Disney's version. He might be my favorite character from the movie, but he was done very wrong. Also yes, Ares was not evil, he was just a coward ( if I am not wrong).
“Is there a chance he is being misjudged” Me, an ex greek mythology nerd: PFFFFFT HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!! yes, definitely Edit: and about the whole hades having complaints about persephone leaving thing? Actually he realised that her mother taking life from nature with her daughter gone was a VERY bad thing, but still wanted her to stay, AAAANNNND you forgot to factor in that hades and persephone actually had a pretty decent relationship afterwards anyway
Hades to me is the guy who has to clean after his two brothers Zeus and Poseidon, he hates having to do so but it has to be done. Hades is the only the most responsible gods in Greek mythology.
Hades was a true working man. He had little time for petty things, and I assume he appreciated a real conversation. Why he kidnapped Persephone is understandable. He probably saw a true, innocent person in her and it was something that he needed, because he was always stuck in the underworld. He was free to roam the Earth at his own will, but he cared too much about his duty, and only did so when absolutely necessary. He truly is a saint, in comparison to his brothers.
Funny thing is, if you actually met Hades, you'd probably think "Damn. This guy's a hardass". But then, when you compare him to the absolute clusterfuck that are the Olympians, you probably think "Y'know, Hades is a pretty chill dude as things considering" 🤣
There is quite a bit of controversy over Hades kidnapping of Persephone. Primarily whether or not it was true within the mythologies. Not all of the mythologies have him kidnapping her. In several Iteration of that story, she went willingly.
In some versions of the myth Hades asked Zeus how to get Persephone to be his wife to which Zeus responded he should kidnap her and take her to the underworld, and whilst he did still kidnap her it's more that he took advice from an asshole who thought of abduction and rape as a suitable passtime. But it is a pretty well known fact that of the Greek Pantheon, Hades was the kindest to mortals and the most respectful god. Some examples of these is the Orpheus story as well as one of Heracles' labours.
When you look at the Greek Pantheon, it's very ironic that the 2 most tamest and sanest gods are the God of the Underworld and the God of War. 2 areas you really would not think would have relatively benevolent backgrounds to; Hades is actually very decent when it comes to visitors to the underworld. Hell in the Persephone situation, he is informed that Demeter is basically trying to wipe out all of humanity with an ice age over her empty nest syndrome, and knowing how overworked he'd get allowed persphone to return, and depending on the version she gave into hunger on the way or already ate before Hermes came by to deliver the news. But overall her treatment in the Underworld was actually really good. Hades was said to be very hospitable. Ares I'd say is strangely the 2nd most tame god: Dude was more a punching bag than a danger to mortals. Ares once even got captured by 2 titans and stuck in a giant jar. Ares tends to be the butt of the pantheon's inner jokes at most. But at least the worst he's ever done to mortals outa spite was invent the rooster (in comparisson, Athena created spiders after losing a weaving contest to a mortal girl, she was that big of a sore loser)
Media always portrays Hades as a deranged maniac or literal Satan, when in truth hes really just a chill, if not bored guy, whose faithful and loving with his wife, displays a huge sense of honor and respect for mortals and avoids Posiden and Zeus cause he knows the two are complete assholes.
Hades is the best, you Zeus and Poseidon simps. Fair, hardworking, wise and faithful. Mess with him, he’ll make your stay in Tartarus even more torturous.
Playing Hades (the game) has actually caused me to really like Hades (the God). He seems lonely, like he just needs a friend or something. He has a stressful job. He has a wife who’s mean to him. He has a son who constantly tells him he hates him and says he wants to leave the underworld, yet continues freeloading off of him. He’s definitely a better person than his brothers are. I wish I could give him a hug.
Maybe hades kidnapped her bcuz he didn’t want Persephone to get raped by one of his brothers like Zeus or Poseidon. I mean in the mythology Zeus and Poseidon chose whoever they wanted to have sex with and with hades marrying Persephone that made her technically off limits if she’s the wife of hades. Perhaps he did so to protect her from being another victim.
He did forget to mention the fact that before hand hades asked Zeus and he gave him the ok so it was less of a kidnapping and more like a arranged marriage
Remember that just because he was much nicer than the other gods, that doesn't mean that he was a good guy, he kidnapped Persephone and made her his wife, he was still a terrible person, its just when comparing him to what Zeus and Poseidon did, it makes him look like a saint

I guess the directors of Clash of the Titans and Percy Jackson didn't do any research on the real Hades.
In the Percy Jackson books, Hades actually wasn't a villain. In fact, he helped Percy in the final battle against Kronos. He was a misunderstood God in the books. They screwed over him in the movies, though.

@@theboogeyman2590 I loved the percy Jackson movies as a kid. Then I read the books
Not to mention he respected her and no way tried to rape her

I only know really little of greek myths but one thing I really dislike is that every time there is a story based on greek myth, Hades is always the villain were there are others that could fill the role better: Ares and Hera being good examples heck even Athena is kinda villanous.
That is one of the reasons I don't like Disney's Hercules and some modern takes on greek myths in media.
One example of Athena's villainousness is when she cursed Medusa just because Poseidon raped her on Athena's temple, paying an innocent for a guilty one
At least the first DCEU wonder woman was different in that regard
Thanks for replying!!!
@@kak4191 can you explain more about this shared throne???
That’s the way Rachel wrote him in her WEBTOON
I also heard cerberus means "cloud" in some other language, it was commented on other Hades related video, so I'm not 100% sure that's true, but I really like the thought of Hades naming his dog spot or fluffy XD

Your video needs some editing.
-He did have a temple dedicated to him at Sila
-Bit of a leap saying that just because he preferred to stay in his kingdom, that makes him bad
-You are quoting Hesiod's version of events around Persephone.

Some versions also claim Zeus pretty much forced him to abduct has part of getting his blessing to marry Persephone.
Even the kidnapped versions also has things like taking her before her mother turned her into a tree so she could never leave. Also the underworld is where all mortals end up. That's a lot of company.
@@ADerpyReality In terms of power, Hades is more powerful than Zeus, Which is why Olympus and the Underworld can't interfere with each others laws.
If you are going to make a story about Greek myth the main villain should be someone like ares or typhon
Ah I see, its a case of Stockholm syndrome then, now that makes Hades a saint doesn't it?

One thing I should point out is that Hades does offer assistance to the Olympians on a few occasions. For example, during the Gigantomachy, Hades is said to have lent Hermes the Helm of Darkness to help the latter fight the attacking giants. Also, in some versions of the clash against Typhon, Hades likewise lends the Helm of Darkness to Hermes when the latter went with Pan to rescue a then-incapacitated Zeus.

Hades is ironically the nicest major god in Greek Mythology. At worst you can say he wasnt nearly as bad as most other gods especially his brothers.
Hades was a saint in comparison to his brothers. He was the god of the afterlife in my opinion seeing as every mortal serves him eventually. And he was loyal to Persephone.
The 13th god ... that breaks the circle.

Hades to me is the guy who has to clean after his two brothers Zeus and Poseidon, he hates having to do so but it has to be done. Hades is the only the most responsible gods in Greek mythology.
being the eldest son. Hades is badass. would definitely like to know him better
Hades basically: misunderstood, wise, stoic, good pondered, dilligent and spooky guy!
Hades is the most responsible and respectable of the Greek Gods
When you look at the Greek Pantheon, it's very ironic that the 2 most tamest and sanest gods are the God of the Underworld and the God of War. 2 areas you really would not think would have relatively benevolent backgrounds to;
Hades is actually very decent when it comes to visitors to the underworld.
Awesomely told
Thank you!
it was very flawed. but was still god's work.

Hades is the best, you Zeus and Poseidon simps.
Fair, hardworking, wise and faithful.
Mess with him, he’ll make your stay in Tartarus even more torturous.
He was chosen to rule the underworld... he was given a job and he does it
Playing Hades (the game) has actually caused me to really like Hades (the God).
