(Richard here) Having used Shimano Hollowtech cranksets and BB for many years on my road and gravel bikes, I now run nothing but the good old fashion square taper BB on my bikes. The square taper BB turns, in almost all cases, as freely as a Hollowtech BB at a fraction of the cost. The only thing sacrificed is a little weight. However, I can change cranks and chainrings at will using rather inexpensive 104BCD cranks and chainrings. To me, I prefer the simplicity and flexibility of square taper BB & cranksets.
I still run square taper (BB-UN26) on my 26" bike. I believe that BB lasts longer than any Hollowtech II, but taking it off is a pain as it requires too many tools. I like the simplicity of servicing Hollowtech BBs, but triple cranksets simply don't exist, so I'm forced on stocking UN26s as triple cranksets for square taper are still available. People would say to migrate to 29ers so I'd have more options and less costs, but in the end I like the bike that I ride and I'm happy with it.

Still not convinced if I should upgrade to a better squared spindle bracket or get a thru-spindle / hollowtech like this one. One thing I've read is that the fact the left crankarm is screwed in makes them more vulnerable to potential snaps if enough pedalling force is applied, whereas with the square spindle one this can never happen, one less thing to go wrong. The bearings positioned on the outside can also be problematic as they're more exposed to the elements. What I find crazy is the fact they created a proprietary shape for the left crankarm nut instead of a common hex, just to sell you yet another tool. 10:30 Great video tho, very ASMR!

if the crank arm has a bit of damage to the spindle, can you sand off and straighten the aluminium lines, to where they will fit back onto the axle? At the moment it will not go back onto the axle
@@NiceBikeService I actually tried hammering on the crank arm the wrong way around onto the axle spindle. It had the effect of straightening the aluminum crank arm spindle lines. After that I got the crank arm on the right way around.
In this case, do you need to have faced the sides of bb shell? I'm about to do the same thing in this video to my gravel.. except that it has a 68 mm bb shell.
Torque wrench should click once and you leave it - not checking twice or three times cause you overtighten. The rest I will treat as a guidance because I have more experience with cars than bicycles 😂
We use Divinol thick calcium grease for the bushings. The chain can be lubricated with any liquid mineral oil, but it is better to use a specialised one for chains, the main thing is to wipe off the excess grease after lubrication. The cassette does not need to be lubricated. We did not use super lube, in principle it may be suitable for hubs and threads, but we did not check, such a grease is not sold in our city.

Hi, is it ok not to install the plastic sleeve in the center of a hollowtech BB? It is getting in the way of my dropper post internal cable so I am thinking not to install it. Thanks in advance.
I notice with these hollow tech II systems...they don't spin very freely...they have quite a bit of drag to it, like they rather stiff. Must add to the peddling.
Hollowtech II is not a crankset that I'd recommend. Period. I replaced my original crankset (tapered) with the Hollowtech II because the H II was splined and I figured less likely to fall apart at the crank arm. Wrong. The plastic pin card is absolutely a constant and consistent failure point with those failures happening with very bad timing. I had mine for approximately 6 years and ended up constantly replacing the pin on a more frequent basis over time. Decided I'd had enough when it was needing replacement every 5 to 6 months. I now have a SRAM GX double crankset and am far more pleased with it.

If you have a hollowtech bottom bracket, then you will need a bottom bracket cup puller, an adjustable spanner, To replace the bearings you will need a Bottom Bracket Bearing Removal Tool. Cranks are removed with an hex key
I rebuilt my MTB into a Frankensgravel bike recently. I regret not upgrading to a better bottom bracket. I did replace but a similar one, squared
The bottom brackets for the square can also be of high quality and last a long time. Good luck with your cycling experiments!
Eu lubrifico o centro das roldanas tbm, vou por rolamentos agora

How do you figure out the correct chain line with the new crankset?
Usually the crankset manufacturer indicates the recommended chain line on the packaging or in the manual
I just did this. Only I had the square taper one cut down because it was stuck and the removal threads were gone (during my heavy removal attempt , the thread broke... ) So yeah, it was time to change for integrated.
Although:
I did not grease the plastic part and I actually read the manual about which spacers do I need based on the shell size - I hope I did not make a mistake
Is the nut important which you have at top of leg
Very professional.
what lubrication do you use on crank extractor tool just somthing like chain oil ?
We use hydraulic brake grease, but you can use chain grease or any mineral grease.
Fajnie posklejany taśmą klucz .😮
😽
Do you need to adjust front der. for new crankset, because the bearings are outside from the shell?
Why do you apply grease on the threads? Shouldn't you use a threadlocker instead?
If you fix the threads instead of lubricating them, the lower bracket will "grow" to the frame and unscrew along with the threads in the future

hi , what the name of the part you removed at 3:31 mine is broken , 👍 whouaaa , shame on me I see now @t 4:28 Shimano Bottom Bracket
SM-BB52 many thank for your video 😀
Thank you for your feedback! 😘
i have BB-52 not work on R8100 Crankset need to change to BBR60?
There will be no difference, try removing or adding spacers in the bottom bracket
if the crank arm has a bit of damage to the spindle, can you sand off and straighten the aluminium lines, to where they will fit back onto the axle? At the moment it will not go back onto the axle
@@NiceBikeService I actually tried hammering on the crank arm the wrong way around onto the axle spindle. It had the effect of straightening the aluminum crank arm spindle lines. After that I got the crank arm on the right way around.
In this case, do you need to have faced the sides of bb shell?
I'm about to do the same thing in this video to my gravel.. except that it has a 68 mm bb shell.
@@NiceBikeService ok thanks for the reply! Have a nice day
Nice video, well done, thanks for sharing :)
Can you tell us what kind of new crankset was installed?
شكرا على الفديو ياورده ❤❤❤❤
😻😺
Good job. Thanks
Witam, jakiego używasz klucza dynamometrycznego? Pozdrawiam
Dzień dobry. Ten klucz ma wiele lat, więc identyfikacja producenta jest niemożliwa😺
Ciao, hai il link per acquistare la chiave per smontare il movimento centrale? Grazie
I understand this is an old thread, but what crankset did you remove?
I don't remember, some kind of "Proville" model.
Torque wrench should click once and you leave it - not checking twice or three times cause you overtighten. The rest I will treat as a guidance because I have more experience with cars than bicycles 😂
Thank you for your comment. The full tightening process was not captured on video 😺
What lube/grease do you use? is multi purpose lube such as super lube good? What lube u use for chain and cassette?
We use Divinol thick calcium grease for the bushings. The chain can be lubricated with any liquid mineral oil, but it is better to use a specialised one for chains, the main thing is to wipe off the excess grease after lubrication. The cassette does not need to be lubricated. We did not use super lube, in principle it may be suitable for hubs and threads, but we did not check, such a grease is not sold in our city.
Why install that low grade deprecated model? Why not the BB-MT800 or BB-MT801 instead?
Wskaniały filmik, dzięki.
Witam opis wprowadza w błąd mechanizm korbowy Shimano Hollowtech II jest pusty w środku a ten na powyższym filmiku nie jest..

Can you please give me the product link? 🙂
These components were bought in local stores and quite a long time ago, so there is no link

Hi, I am having a 60 yr old bicycle in Chennai, Tamilnadu, India. Can you restore and upgrade it?
of course we can) come to Kiev ))))
@@NiceBikeService I wish I could 🥲

Hi, is it ok not to install the plastic sleeve in the center of a hollowtech BB? It is getting in the way of my dropper post internal cable so I am thinking not to install it. Thanks in advance.
Might damage your dropper cable though. The axis will spin and the dropper cable might rubb.
@@Jacksparrow4986 your right. Thanks
Thank you for telling your story. Fortunately, I have a positive experience with Hollowtech II
