Despite this disclaimer, however, I was unable to find satisfactory evidence to prove that the brand have established contractual requirements with their manufacturers to ensure that the factories commissioned to manufacture products are paying their employees at living wages. Furthermore, I was disappointed to find that this brand is one of the many guilty of cancelling partly- or fully-completed orders this year without paying manufacturers for labor performed. For this reason, I do not endorse this brand and I do consider this purchase to be in violation of my anti-fast fashion endeavors. Though I won’t be returning the item, as that doesn’t do anything productive, I will upcycle it into something I can use-and intend to give the purchase of this garment a net-positive outcome by donating the ad revenue from this video to the Clean Clothes Campaign (cleanclothes.org/about), an organisation which is dedicated to improving garment worker rights and conditions worldwide.

I actually disagree with this; I mean, yes, it *could probably be worn over another corset, but the advertisement declares that this corselet 'supersedes the corset' and highlights its intention to be worn only on the upper part of the body, allowing for perfect freedom of movement in the lower. I think they've drawn this conclusion because of the strange little buttoned tabs coming out the bottom of it, but the advertisement shows the woman using these tabs to button the waist of her skirt in place. Since the Khiva corselet is very short in length, it wouldn't provide that secure anchor point at the waist that normal, bust-to-hip corsets do.

A general reply to comments on the fit: it is *extremely* roomy, but this was the smallest size they offered and, judging from the likewise extremely loose fit on the model, I can only presume that this is meant to be the intended fit of this design. They've deliberately dressed her in a S rather than an XS for the product photo, and this isn't anything out of the ordinary in modern clothing construction: clothing nowadays tends to automatically be built with tons of ease, because consumers just aren't comfortable in tight-fitting non-stretch clothing anymore; even corset patterns produced by modern 'big four' pattern companies come built with this roominess built into the pattern, which, while comfy and convenient for modern everyday clothes, rather defeats the purpose of a tight-fitting corset.
The footage you see of active performance in the garment is following a slight alteration to narrow the body of the garment by taking a small amount out of straight seams in the back to increase the snugness, whereas I had not yet altered it for the initial try-on; there was not enough difference in support to warrant mentioning: it only ended up constricting my ribcage and limiting breathing without still providing any bust support, since the bones are not pushing up from an anchored point at the waist as in historical stays and corsetry, but are pre-bent into their own curved position with the intent of building out an Ideal Bust Shape rather than working *with* the bust to create a supported shape. Yes, I could have made a more substantial alteration under the bust, tapered some of the seams and re-shaped the bones, but then the entire experiment would be pointless as I would be deviating too much from the original pattern shapes to give a fair assessment of its effectiveness.
There is also the glaring obviousness that I am a very small-busted lady to begin with, and so my assessment of this cannot necessarily speak for the supportiveness of this garment on larger busts. (Any larger-busted costubers who want to give this a try and might fit into my XS, hit me up before I upcycle this into a bust bodice. ;D)
It should also be said, in case this wasn't clear from the video, that this is not a "roast" of this garment. It is a genuine investigation of a thing that clearly has historical influence, and I was curious to see how it performed. While obviously it wasn't up to historical standards, this clearly wasn't the goal; I commend its nod to historical dress nonetheless.
I appreciate this essay. I just remembered how much it gaped on the model as well. I commend you on your experiment of taking tucks. How sad that it could not even attempt to support a bosom. After all, it is marketed by a sports company, presumably for active wear.
While bosom size, and ribcage, size both vary hugely, there are a significant enough amount of ladies of similar proportion, or more modest endowment. The companies are clearly catering to customers' desires for loose fitting clothing.

I must say, these garments are mostly made for ladies with small busts, as on a larger or even medium bust the top just ends up sticking away from the body instead of conforming to it because of the front pre-shaped bones and the fact that they're rather loose or even stretchy, so it's quite impossible to get a tight fit that would force the bones to actually form to the body. At leas that has been my experience with these sort of bones-on-princess-seams/only-in-the-front types of garments
Not a costuber but very much into costuming and a larger-busted XS sized person. If ever you would not find someone else I would enjoy trying to see whether it provides anything like support.

@Bria Tia I don't wear historical clothing and have never thought that slapping a logo in the middle of a product made it look "better." I'm sure there are people with modern tastes that agree with either viewpoint. Personally I don't love paying a brand a premium for a low/moderate quality good where they then use my body for advertising space.

Regarding the surviving sports corset -this is completely anecdotal- I’m a classical dancer and I’ve noticed that my dancing garments tend to show more wear than my everyday clothing from all of the strenuous and sweaty movement in them. Perhaps there aren’t as many because they deteriorate more quickly

As another classical dancer - exactly! Think about how often you need to re-bone the tops of tutus (which are functionally corsets). Of course, since its perfectly easy to dance in a very very tight bodice, with relatively stiff boning, that supports the fact that there really isnt any point for a sports corset
Yet another classical dancer agreeing with everything everyone else here has said! I'll add that I do historical costuming as well, and have danced in an 1880's style corset before (why not try it?), and all it really impedes is those big Vaganova back bends, which weren't so much a part of 19th c. ballet anyway. Otherwise? It's another stiff bodice.

I might be generous, and give it 3 classes with my favourite hardass instructor, but that thing doesn't look like it's near to the quality of a good leotard! And it looks way less comfortable too. Good point about people not hanging onto sweaty, stinky old sport corsets! That would be like hanging onto every pair of pointe shoes a ballet dancer destroys! And dead pointe shoes can be *nasty*.
I'm not a classical dancer, but a hip hop dancer- I have noticed a similar problem with clothes that are marketed as "hip hop dance" clothes. It really does bring into question the high price compared to durability

I exclusively wear balconette bras! Always padded, in spite of a large cup size, and I always feel very well supported and held. I can't stand full cup bras, I feel like I'm being choked!

In historical fashion one has to consider ballet dancers as extraordinary sports people as well. The confining costumes they wear have evolved from corseted costumes. And yet they perform with such grace and agility.

I think the 2020 people love the beautiful aspect of corset, but media and what not resulted in the comen misconception that they are uncomfortable resulting in this contraption being born!
I don't think it's actually that deep. Even though adidas is a sports brand, they also make clothes for normal wear. And corset or bust bodices got very popular lately. It actually looks like a copy of the satin ones from Vivienne Westwood (who actually has an understanding of historical clothing), except they put adidas logo on it.

An archival box is made of strong , good/high quality card board and acid free, so that items can be stored safe from dust, light and be preserved and the boxes can't crush each other when stacked apon each other. 😊
Just to add that museum's and galleries may use them to store documents, archeology finds and such like.

True, it'll probably make a corset in the athletic line depending on the reception and popularity of the fashion "sport" corset.
A few years ago Stella McCartney designed a sportsline for Adidas. Back then I was a serious athlete and very interested in what she offered. I was very disappointed and wrote an email to Adidas that the offered items were for listed reasons (fabrics, sewing patterns,...) not athletic wear but athletic looking fashion and asked to change the description.
Never received an answer but a few weeks later they changed the description that it was fashion for women who wanted to show of their athletic lifestyle. 😄
That item is from the Adidas Originals line, which is their fashion line, not sports (they have the trefoil leaf logo instead of the three diagonal bars). It's not meant to offer any technical features.

The moment I saw the logo I was like ah, the fashion line. Glad I scanned the comments first. I'm always surprised how many folk don't know the 2 main logos of such an iconic brand.
I've had a look at Adidas' online store and there's absolutely no mention of either sports or chest 'support' in the product description. All it say is that it creates a nice body shape and goes with everything, so I think it is very much intended as a fashion rather than a sports garment. As regards the reinforced stitching at the ends of the bones, I'm inclined to think that this is probably more influenced by modern wired bra design, rather than historical corsetry. Modern bra wires have similar reinforcing at the wire ends, despite which I've had several poke their way out as the bra became more worn, usually at the most inconvenient time possible.
Oh yeah. And ending up tearing apart the rubber lining of the washing machine...
@@fruzsimih7214 To be fair most wired bras are labelled "hand-wash only." I still wash mine in the machine anyway, because its really the only way to get them clean enough, especially if you've gotten sweaty in them. They usually machine wash without problems, though it does probably mean they don't last as long. Ironically, the only bra wire I've ever actually had snap (as opposed to poke out one end) in a machine is one that was actually specifically supposed to be machine washable.
It's from their Adidas Originals line, which has nothing to do with sportswear or function. The logo clearly displayed on the front of the corset makes it very clear but somehow, people still think it's supposed to be full of features.
@@alexkatie5206 I think that's because many people only know the logo of the brand with the three leaves and associate it with a known sports-brand (or just look at the three stripes) and automatically think it's supposed to have that funtion. I've never heard of them having two logos (or even a fashion line) and after googling it I only now realized that they're different despite having seen both versions before. It isn't a surprise to me that someone who normally isn't interested in the brand wouldn't know this.

I was watching a Western where the female lead was riding around in naught but a shift and let me tell you as a larger-busted lady I would never dream of riding a horse without a corset or bra. Just- ouch

Yikes. I'm a D-cup, and just going about my day is heavy, and my bra gives *no* proper support. I gotta get myself something to properly secure them. I've even considered finding binders, just to tie them down for excersise. Because jiggling, bouncing breasts is not at all comfortable.
I suspect, they actually had a very educated designer, whom couldn't execute what they wanted to and is now having nightmares of historically correct corsets screaming to them in side boning.

I'm not quite as organized as her but I do write on the boxes and organize the boxes according to theme of items
inventory lists are usually required when you've hired a company to handle your move for you, in case anything gets lost or damaged

It takes double or triple the time to do than you would think it should(also take pictures of fragile or valuables items before putting them in the box), but its very helpful to prevent things from "getting lost"(don't attach that inventory to the box) in the move(also handy for crossing international borders) and when it comes time to unpack, it helps tremendously for being able to prioritize which boxes to unpack first(and I think makes the time invested well worth it). I also like to put the total number of boxes on each box(n of n) on all sides of the box and color code them based on their intended room. To make the unloading go faster, I also create a separate inventory sheet that says where each box should go based on its number and have a basic numbered(and colored) room layout diagram with those corresponding numbers printed out(multiple copies to tape up at every entrance the movers might use).
Regardless of if you're paying for professional movers or not, I highly recommend having an "essentials box"(or one for each family member) for everything that you might need for living in your new home for at least the first week(this should also include food for a few days, toilet paper for each bathroom and general cleaning supplies). Moving can be very stressful and extremely tiring, so having that dedicated box that you personally bring to your new home with all your essentials in it, takes a lot of the stress out of the equation. Also try to get the Utilities setup and turned on at your new home at least two weeks prior to your move in date(having no water or power sucks).
There might also be professional moving companies in your area that are willing to completely pack and move your household goods for you(very popular in Japan). And if you can afford it(for cross town moves, it's not much more expensive than a large truck rental for where I live) I say let someone else break their back moving all your stuff for you! For cross town moves, the moving companies usually have three guys in a truck and assuming everything is packed and ready to go; my experience has been that they are able to completely move everything in a single day, which is another reason I think paying for them is well worth it.
It's mandatory for using moving services/moving your stuff into the UK!
Plus writing it on the laptop is a good idea. When my sister moved, she had all the boxes carefully inventoried, but then someone packed her little notebook with the inventory into a box. She ended up finding it in the very last box.
I saw the ads for this adidas corset several weeks. I immediately thought “that Victorian RUclips lady” would never stand for this idea.

I am aware that the theme of the video is "corsets" but I am amazed by the calming vibes of your "I'm moving to a different continent" actions. I moved houses 3 blocks away and it was the most stressful thing I've experienced.

My mom and I moved 3 miles and her anxiety was crazy bad. She wants to move to Montana from California, I'm pretty sure I'm going to have to send her on vacation and make sure the loading and unloading days are full of distractions even while she's on vacation.
At 7:11 you see Bernadette making a list of the contents of the boxes she is packing. Girl is ON TOP of her schtuff! I'm impressed. I've moved 10 times in the last 10 years (I am not exaggerating) and it's always a clusterfest (yes I know that's not the real expression, but this is a family friendly channel after all).
I've moved countries 3 times in the past 4 years. If you don't have too much stuff, are on top of admin, and are ready for the changes in your life that come with a big move, it isn't too stressful.

Bernadette, if you ever happen to see this, I remember a while back you mentioned in a Skillshare ad-read that you were doing some learning on there about storytelling, camerawork, etc. and I just gotta say that it's really payed off. Your videos have never been bad by any means but its abundantly clear that you've steadily increased and improved your filmmaking and visual storytelling abilities with each video. It's fun to see someone grow and evolve, and I just wanted to give you some credit for your effort and tell you that it noticeably shows.
I'm actually going through an adidas phase myself and I've definitely read the description for this "corset" because I actually did want to buy it. (I didn't because I'm pretty busty and it looks constrictive in that department and I probably wouldn't be wearing it often enough to justify buying it) The description itself states that's it's purely for fashion or "Street wear"; while I think this video was pretty interesting and funny and surprisingly well timed because the Adidas Corset is a relatively new product; it was never meant to be a sports garment despite Adidas itself being a sportswear brand and the description for the garment itself implies that.

@@ShannaCarlson525 the good thing about numbering boxes and then creating a list is that you can fill a box with a bunch of disparate things, just write down what things are in said box.
I find it a much more flexible arrangement than trying to stick with “this box for this room” type of packing. And then it’s also very easy to find what you need when you’ve moved. You can make a few printouts of your list, as well as email it to yourself so you have the list on your phone, and with you at all times.
Highly recommend this method of packing!
@@katherinemorelle7115 Definitely. I really prefer to pack boxes so that they're within a particular weight range for their size and shape, and to fit things in, around, and fill the box. Leaving room in the top is just asking for it to get smushed.
It leads to some strange combinations of what gets packed, particularly in terms of large items, but for long distance moves, it's definitely the way to go. Leaving your beautiful, sort of delicate side table unboxed is perfectly logical if you're moving yourself across the city, and a terrible idea for long distance.
I've never actually made that kind of list, I just wrote on the boxes, but based on the confused, but appreciative, and amused, feedback I got from the friend I packed for. A list is definitely the way to go if you're not the only person packing and unpacking your own belongings, and you don't happen to have an brain which is conducive to a near encyclopedic memory for items - and don't wish to be getting texts for the next 3 months asking where one might find particular items. The good news is nothing got damaged.
It reminds me of 80’s/90’s club wear, and I’m guessing that’s where they got their inspiration from. My first attempts at “corset” sewing were kind of like this (in the 90’s), it’s a very simple shape, and especially in Lycra is super quick and easy to sew, and simple to adapt, although I remember them being more fitted.
As a full-busted woman, this “corset” would be nice if doing something that includes bouncing or arm movements. Even with the best sports bras can use some help in keeping the girls in line. I’d be interested to see what size this garment goes up to.
Exactly. I had 2 classmates who had to wear sport bras with a normal bra for daily life cause our school had hella stairs and a lot of our classes were in different places in the school. I have C-D tits so its not a big struggle and i can go bra free except for excersize. Even if this causes some awkward incidents sometimes: going out of malls into the cold, general cold outside, being perked up because of chaffing😂 we breastowners know the struggle i think

My paternal grandmother (1884 -1977) was one of the first women of her generation to get a college degree in physical education, and in the years before she married, actually worked as a coach for women's athletics at the college level. Somewhere in my family's archive, there's a photo of her posing with her 1905 women's basketball team (yes, she was a tall woman). This is not the first time I wish I could go back in time and ask her all sorts of questions I never knew to ask her while she was still alive. :-/
On the one hand, I'm glad she married, because that led to my father, and thus, to me. But on the other hand, all the work she had done as a younger woman for women''s suffrage and social relief ended when she got married, and that makes me kind of sad for the rest of the world. You Know?

@@wonderwend1 When clothing was custom made to fit you and body sizes didn't matter as much because you were doing heavy lifting and didn't want to look like one extremely cold winter could kill you
Edit: this is snarky and unhelpful, but really, most Victorian ready-made patterns catered to bust sizes of at least 45 inches, if not 50. A lot of catalogs don't even have sizes listed because it was expected you would have it fitted and altered.

Agree... it's a stretch garment, it needs to fit quite snug to give support. Sports bras (which this basically is) are supposed to fit quite a bit tighter than that.

Okay 1) that cake looks incredible and I'm jealous, even though it's only 9am my time and I should have breakfast before even contemplating cake, 2) delightful mask, 3) I had a dream about adventuring with you, Bernadette! The details escape me but I think it was pretty distressing and there was a lot of running from things because at the end we were both very shaky and unsteady (and in a coffee shop, for some reason? Ah, we've circled back to cake) and then I woke up.

Do you think this could be more useful for a lady with a bigger bust, who might not want the quite localised pressure of a sports bra? Or would it just be useless anyway, and provide no support for the bust?
That's an excellent question, and one I can't answer first-hand! My instinct is that, without it being anchored in any way at the waist or even banded in any way at the underbust, it wouldn't be stable enough from below to provide much support, even if one could properly fill it out.

I have a bigger bust, and also a sports bra similar to this one, but without the bones and zipper, and I feel this one would be equally useless XD

@The Love Witch it really provides great back support, and support on the waist too . The support was really necessary because clothes at that time were heavy to wear. Your body needed support to carry the skirts and crinoline, etc etc

As someone who has to wear both a back brace and a rather intense sports bra while horse back riding...an athletic/riding corset sounds very practical. I can also confirm that said brace combo does not make being physical difficult, and I can breathe just fine.
