LOVE LOVE LOVE your videos. My 3 year old black Australorp Yvette was so upset after seeing her coop mate killed by a predator, I took her inside my house. She insisted on sleeping me me and the dog. Using my ankles or shins as her night perch was her first choice. She also liked to tuck herself under my arm like a baby. In June stray single young hen was wandering near the highway bordering my house. I caught her( either a Rhode Island White, or Plymouth Rock) and now Olivia is also a house hen. They free range during the day then come inside at night. Now they have boxes and perches at the picture window. My LOOK OUT security hens ! Every morning them waddle into the bedroom to get me out of bed to let them out. Olivia immediately hops up into the coop on my covered deck where she lays an egg to start her day. Yvette has now learned to let herself in via the dog door. My deerface Chihuahua and the 2 hens get along so well. (Unless all 3 are hanging around when I'm trying to eat. One evening Yvette jumped high, grabbed a sloppy joe out of my hand and ran through the house. The dog of course was in quick chase to catch up all the meat filling that was dropping from the bun.
I love how calm your roster is! Also, thanks for the tip about trimming the feathers on the Cochins. I used to think I'd never want to raise them because they seemed like they were too high-maintenance. You've really made me rethink the breed.
I concur about the Black Australorp. Mine is just visually stunning...deep brown eyes and poofy silky soft black/green feathers. It took her 8 1/2 months to start laying but she lays jumbo eggs the size of duck eggs. She enjoys being held and petted and despite her size, she doesn’t peck at me or the other chickens. Just is sweet and minds her own business.
My son and his family have had several of the Black Astralorps and the roo was absolutely huge and he was VERY aggressive and would go after you! The hens weren’t that way. I still think they’re one of the prettiest breeds I’ve seen. Of course my son sort of liked to aggravate the rooster when they first got him. He may be the one to blame for the roosters aggressiveness lol. Who wants to be aggravated, right?
My momma taught me to never play with my food. I did not do well listening to my momma. I love interacting with my livestock. More great tips Becky. Thank you.
LOL, the first chickens I got were two black Astralorps, and two Domoniques; and I promptly nicknamed one of the Astralorps "Velociraptor," because she was - and remains - the only chicken that has ever bitten me. She did NOT like being picked up, for me to move her from her carrier into her new coop.
Thank you so much for making these chicken videos, you have inspired me to take care of chickens. And now because of you I have 3 baby chicks Mango, Obi and Ginger!
I love my chickens. I can go out and just watch their antics. Like watching chicken tv. Very entertaining. Yes to the sand. I added to their run and lots of it. Stays loose. Dries fast and they love it for dust baths. Great suggestion Becky.
I’ve had chickens for over 25 years and it’s the way that you treat them when they first come into your home. I do a lot of touching and I am very calm. I find that young kids and dogs frighten them and make them more aggressive. I just got the little Banti rooster who’s the friendliest I’ve ever had. When I first came out in the morning he will let me pet him as well as in the evening. A lot of egg production is based on nutrition please look into super foods if your chickens are not doing well.
Hi Becky! I have my 23 girls...they are so healthy...they have their huge coop and huge run....they are doing so good! I give it all to you Becky---you really helped me when I first started...I was on your channel ALL THE TIME! You are awesome---your son Scott is also! Thank you so much for your channel! You have really helped me along....have a blessed day out there! :) Dawn @ Rich & Dawn in MN :)
I am not a newbie, but I chose Cochin in my new home. I was living in Arizona. I live in Missouri now. I have been working with putting a concrete floor in my coop run. It is covered with rain awnings. I plan to put down about 4” of sand on top of the concrete. I hope it will be good for my feathered family.
We are beginning our 2 week of raising chicks! We went with a black australorp, a silver laced Wyandotte, a cuckoo Moran, and a barred rock. Can’t wait for my color coordinated flock to grow! 😊
We have different kinds of chickenbreeds in Europe. In Sweden we have old swedish very lovely kinds of breeds, and so I would recommend other kinds of chickens here. I started up with just 5 chickens and a roosters. Now i have 30 of them.😄 I just love chickens.❤️
I live in Ontario Canada and in the suburbs. Neighbours are close. I have a corner lot. I have a little bit of space and we are contemplating getting a couple of chickens next year. That gives us time to prepare the area, get the coop built. I am nervous. I think 2 is probably safer to start with seeing as this is my first time. We are allowed up to 5 within the city limits. Trying not to get in over my head.
Becky, your videos are always fun! Do you eat your chickens? At what age? Who slaughters them? Would make for a good video to talk about it as well as how you recycle and reuse organic things like eggshells

Hi Becky, would you recommend the blue australorp, or only the black? I wondered if there was any difference in character, or egg laying abilities. Thank you for all your wonderful videos.

@@BeckysHomestead I have my own farm and own some organic rice..so I'm thinking to smash those rice and also add some sharp sand to their diet for grit..is it okay now?
My sexlink are great super friendly and easy to catch the come when I call and are really good layers. I have them cooped because we have lots of Hawks. My run is about 10 x 12 and a indoor cool about 6 x 8, we gave them half of a shed for there winter cool, for 4 birds thinking about getting 2 more fancy birds maybe.
Cute banty rooster 😍 looks just like my Charlie I had years ago, he was a BB-RED OEG banty and he loved people. My top 3 are red/gold sexlinks (easy going, smart, friendly, people oriented, very hardy, huge eggs, awesome in every way) and everything she said about them is true. My #2 is hatchery RIRs (easy going, friendly, people oriented, very hardy, super egg layers) and then #3 is commercial white Leghorns (not nearly as flighty as other colors of Leghorns, sweet natured, hardy, egg machines, big eggs)...
That rooster in the intro was staring through my soul lol. Also, I owned a chicken that was almost killed by her flock, and we recently had to put her down due to a cat attack. Everyone, *be sure to protect your chickens!* But anyway, thank you for all the helpful advice about chicken care! You got me into hobby farming in the first place.
Would it be accurate to say that large breeds are generally easier to handle than smaller breeds? Seems like all the most commonly recommended "easier" breeds seem to be the large ones because they're more docile apparently. Do you experience that as well? Also wondering if there's any difference (apart from size) between dwarf cochins and the regular ones? I've heard from a lot of people that the dwarf cochins tend to go broody quite often. Does that apply for the large ones as well? Have you experience that?
I would maybe not recommend the sex-links for first time owners. They are flighty, mine were not friendly and hard to catch from my neighbors yards during their escapes. They are the champions on egg laying, often laying 6 days a week. But with that, brings another issue. Red Sex links are lucky to even live past 2 to 3 years because of their high egg production and large eggs which causes problems such as prolapse oviduct or being egg bound. Maybe instead of the sex link, substitute that with a Buff Orpington. The problems with my sex links made it just hard for me to keep backyard chickens. I ended up selling my entire flock and hen house. I do want to get hens again one day and I agree on the Australorps. Their size makes it hard for them to fly out of fencing. Their eggs while considered as brown....are a light brown almost peachy color to them. I had two of them and they just cowered down to let me pick them up. So sweet. I should have just gotten all Australorps instead of mixing in sexlinks with the flock.
Hello I'm autumn I just subscribed when I found your channel looking for a good chicken breed that's quiet friendly and good with eggs not bantoms tho. My mom doesn't like small eggs I've had loads of chickens before but I'm living with my mom now and she said I can have a few chickens this spring as long as they are good with the requirements. She's had lots of bad experiences with chickens before but I want her to like Therese ones I will get. I need something more easy to get what do you suggest. Also I don't want them squawking about the cat or dogs. By the way I love your farm and I barely got a glimpse of it so I will watch your vids from now on
Hey Becky thank you for the video I enjoyed it and my friends they have young kids and I just thought about maybe they should get chickens I think they have an acre of property so what size do you suggest that their Coop be and how many chickens do you think and by the way you looking good keep it up with the weight loss and what kind of chickens are good with kids

I have 4 flighty birds... not fun! One wouldn’t get off my house lol. I love them but really like my black australorps and silkies more
Sex-linked*
Alan Davis I own a sex-link and she is very good. Doesn’t peck or bite people. Almost never tries to leave the yard but that is just my chicken
That’s weird every single sex link I’ve raised was at least somewhat friendly
Hello I'm autumn I just subscribed when I found your channel looking for a good chicken breed that's quiet friendly and good with eggs not bantoms tho. My mom doesn't like small eggs I've had loads of chickens before but I'm living with my mom now and she said I can have a few chickens this spring as long as they are good with the requirements. She's had lots of bad experiences with chickens before but I want her to like Therese ones I will get. I need something more easy to get what do you suggest. Also I don't want them squawking about the cat or dogs. By the way I love your farm and I barely got a glimpse of it so I will watch your vids from now on
*beautiful mom, i love you from indonesia*
Hahaha thanks☀️❤️☀️
Hey Becky thank you for the video I enjoyed it and my friends they have young kids and I just thought about maybe they should get chickens I think they have an acre of property so what size do you suggest that their Coop be and how many chickens do you think and by the way you looking good keep it up with the weight loss and what kind of chickens are good with kids
It all depends how many chickens they want. Tell them one chicken for each member of the family to start out with☀️❤️☀️
That rooster looks so adorable😍😍😍
There's just something about Becky 😍🔥

They are not flighty, but some people say they are a bit noisy. ☀️❤️☀️

Do you know anything about silky chickens? My grandson wants me to buy one
I'v had white silkies and mine were super broody. They will hatch any fertile eggs. ☀️❤️☀️

Buff Orpingtons are super friendly!
I love Buff Orpingtons☀️❤️☀️
I found the Rhode Island's were the best ones for me
They are great egg layers, but I find they get egg bound year 2 or 3. Make sure you feed crushed oyster shells, that will help stop that problem☀️❤️☀️
@@BeckysHomestead thank you I sure will
Did you try Novogen Layers
