- "Officina Battaglin is an Italian brand of custom steel bikes. Founded by Giovanni Battaglin, the legendary cyclist capable of winning the Giro d’Italia and the Vuelta a Espana in just 48 days, Officina Battaglin is dedicated to ensuring that every creation is truly bespoke." - officinabattaglin.com
"In our workshop in Marostica, Italy, we build custom steel bikes to the owner’s specifications, with comfort as a constant. Each frame we make bears the founder’s signature, thanks to exclusive Italian finishes and custom geometries designed by Giovanni Battaglin in person."
In this video, JOM of the Gravel Cyclist crew is joined by Alex (Alessandro) Battaglin, co-founder of Officina Battaglin for a comprehensive tour of the showroom and production facility. We also meet the legend behind the name himself, Mr Giovanni Battaglin. It was an absolute honor meeting this humble legend of cycling.
For those unaware, Mr Battaglin won the 1981 Vuelta a Espana (this race used to happen in April) and just three days later, lined up to race and win the 1981 Giro d'Italia. In other words, over the span of 48 days, Giovanni Battaglin won back to back Grand Tours. Incredible.

Continued from Above:
Why Steel?
"In the era of bicycle technology's obsession with lightness and stiffness, carbon seems to be the only choice when it comes to finding a new bike to explore new road feels."
"But is shaving weight the only thing that matters? Giovanni Battaglin asked himself this question in 2014, after 12 years of professional bike racing and more than 30 as a bicycle manufacturer. In 1981, right after the Giro-Vuelta double, he launched the first racing bicycle models built in a small workshop in his hometown of Marostica, in the North-East of Italy, and bearing his name on the down tube."
"In the following years, Stephen Roche's Triple Crown and all the victories of the Carrera riders endorsed by the Battaglin steel bikes made the brand world-famous. The bike industry is always hungry for new technologies, and the company started experimenting with lighter materials like aluminium and carbon."
"The factory finally put steel aside. But after a few years, Giovanni Battaglin felt that his expertise and legacy were lost. So, in 2014 he decided to go back to brazing custom custom steel frames, dusting off the old machinery that was still in the workshop. With the new Officina Battaglin brand, he returned to his roots. He returned to the exceptional craftsmanship that made his name known all around the world."
"Officina" is the Italian word for "workshop". It's the place where Giovanni Battaglin is reviving his legacy as the only Italian steel maker that is also a Grand-Tour winner.

Hey Jason and Gravel Cyclist team, we wanted to say thanks for stopping by and documenting our frame building process. It was a pleasure having you all here. We can't wait to know what you think of your new Portofino!🇮🇹
Wow! At first I thought "oh this is just all too bling" but then seeing the exsquisite attention to detail and the excellence of the engineering in the factory I now have a new dream bike in mind 😊
Fantastic video. So focused on the video my coffee went cold. Time for a fresh cup and watch it all over again...
Great bikes built by skilled people led by Giovanni and Alex. Italian bikes, especially from the Veneto region, are among the best in the world. Battaglin, vintage or new, bikes will last a lifetime.
Nice tour. Been a fan of steel frames going back to the 80s. Can't beat Italian craftsmanship.
So delighted you covered Officina Battaglin, the premium makers of high performance artistic masterpieces in the world. I basked in every moment of this video. Officina Battaglin is the pinnacle for me. Thanks very, very much. All the best.
The GC once again bringing top-shelf bicycling content goodness. Covering rich history, legendary athletes and the ever evolving technology. Who could’ve imagined. 3 triangles made so bello! Fantastico! Graze!
I absolutely love the Cromovelato finish
Officina Battaglin + Campagnolo wireless 12v very nice 🔝🔝🔝🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹
WOW! The cleanliness of the workshop tells you a lot about this company!
100%. This workshop sets the benchmark for a lot of frame builders. I ended up buying the beautiful rim brake road bike seen early in the video. I did produce a video about that gorgeous machine and posted to the channel.
Great video. My Portofino recently arrived. It's an incredible bike. During the bike build, I had the opportunity to get to know Alex. Great guy and customer service oriented. It was nice to see where and how the bike was built. I hope to go to Italy someday to see their facility and meet Alex in person.
Nice one Ron, I hope you make it to Italy. An amazing place to ride bikes, and the beautiful town of Marostica that is home to Battaglin is equally worth looking around. Good luck!
Hey Ron, it's wonderful to see you here! Your kind words mean a lot to us, and we truly enjoyed collaborating with such a gentleman like yourself on your custom project. We hope you'll be able to visit us, we would be thrilled to have you as our special guest. Looking forward to seeing you soon!🇮🇹
Congrats! I just ordered a Portofino G (a gift from my lovely wife) and I cannot wait!
Beautiful bikes. I have always wanted to see custom lugs with a sloping top tube. Good effort on the blur @ 15:30 ;)
I'm in love.... so nice
Absolutely stunning bikes
Incredible bikes!!! And the best is how its work, only for real and pasionate cyclists
Congratulations for all team!!!
Una abraccio Alex
Hola Luis! It's great to have you here supporting us. We truly enjoyed working on your Power+ EVO! Saludos desde Italia 🇮🇹
Thank You Very Much for sharing this. There were a lot of BLING in the video but the bit that caught my eye was Giovanni Battaglin wearing a Cartier Panthere gold case with gold bracelet @04:37. Now, that is CLASS. Bravo Giovanni.
Well spotted. Adding to his class, the Porsche he drives 👌
14:02 a man of culture .
****...long long time ago, there was ..colnago ...but colnago give up (ciao ernesto, hello dubai =disaster is coming) ...now, I think OFFICINA BATTAGLIN WILL BE THE NEW REFERENCE for race bike ! For me, the most beautiful design, color and material (steel !!!! I hate carbon, horror, fragile and no sense). Bravoooo Battaglin !!! See you in september in Marostica for my order ******
Dope tour, cool bikes, interesting process
Very nice frames with quality parts. I livr to see custom boutique frames being made ad my own grandfather was a self employed frame builder in England in the 70s and for s short term in the 80s. Steel fillet brazed and lugged too. He made custom tandems for the touring bikers. Pity you cant visit Cinelli or Alan while in Italy.
Already back in the USA... I made a very impromptu visit to Elite. I could easily have spent a month or more in Italy. I will be returning...
2:38, die Sitzposition entspricht aber einem Rennrad. Schöne Maschinen, Kompliment auch für die Beibehaltung der Stahlrohren von Columbus.
Those frames are beautiful without any finish. 🚲
Jason I am so glad that you are doing what you love. Those bike are real cool, glad you get to see some very talented people doing there craft. Enjoy!
❤❤❤❤ that was incredible
Great Video. My first road rice bike was a steel one. I have grow watching Battaglin race. These bikes looks stunning. I like the modern geometry and components ready frame. But till keeping the traditional chromoly frame
I have one of the(or only?) Battaglin Giro "prototypes"!!!! Bought it from a gentleman in Greece. Emailed Alex about it but then the world shut down. It's definitely an EPIC piece of cycling history!!!! 👌👌👌
Very nice indeed, a super rare piece of history. This is the prototype I collected a little later - ruclips.net/video/FHxHH7GdDlI/видео.html
@@GravelCyclist Simply GORGEOUS! Our two Battaglin prototypes are "dna" related roughly 40+ years apart!!
I have a good selection of quality Carbon bikes to ride, but none of them is as fast or perfect fit as the Portifino.
Officina Battaglin Portifino is so good I ordered a 2nd frame, the reason I wanted this is if I have a mechanical issue (flat tyre, cable break or just forgot to clean it) there is the same quality bike waiting for me.
thank you to the Gravel Cyclist for the tour & Alex Battaglin for his welcoming tour of his amazing factory.
This blue cromovelato on the e-bike looks absolutely stunning.
These bikes are art; the first scratch would be a stab to the heart.
Now, CHROMOVELATTO will be chasing my dreams...!
it is an amazing place! been there 3 weeks ago to get mesured by govanni and set up of the bikes geometry
The most beautiful bikes in the world . I will sell my kidney for this bike ...8-)))
Hola Jason , hermoso proceso , para hermosas bicicletas ... saudos !!
That electric blue in the E-bike is absolutely stunning
awesome bikes! even the flame of the welder looks beautiful.
I bet the image on the wall that you pixelated at 17:10 was beautiful too. 😃
15:30 proves that he is a man of culture, they're reminiscent of those great Pirelli calendars from the better years. Viva Italia!
Thank you for sharing this with us. FANTASTIC!
You are welcome. It was an honor meeting Giovanni Battaglin in person, and seeing these beautiful bikes in person, and under construction.
@@GravelCyclist I sure it was ! 👍🚲
Beautiful bicycles. Too fine to ride.😎
I have a personal Battaglin inbound that I will be riding :) There will be a video about this bike soon.
Beautiful and informative , we enjoyed the factory tour, a very special bike builder.
I actually have one of their promotional books ("Here's my dream bike!") and they have many different paint options, including a matte version which I like even more than the chromovelato. The even offer some some metallic like finishes that rival luxury car paints. I'll bet even Tuesday would be impressed.
I have the "Here's my Dream Bike" book as well. Pure eye candy inside the covers. Takes a lot to impress Tuesday.
Correct; while we're mostly known for our cromovelato finish, we do offer other paint types. With our internal painting team, we're constantly researching and testing new options for making unique bikes 🇮🇹
Oohh.. good timing. just heard that my portofino should be done soon! Love the tour !
Nice!!! I have a Portofino Classic inbound.
@@GravelCyclist fantastic! I went for the G, wanted more of an all rounder
@@ThePsychodo I may have a G coming a little later.
@@GravelCyclist damn. My wife would kill me lol.
My GF encourages my behavior with the bikes and cars :)
Artwork!
What a great video.
I like that Portofino Classic rim brake the best. I'm sick of the constant issues I've had over the last several years of hydraulic disc. I remember the days of never ever having to think about my brakes when I used rim brakes. I might check into a Portofino Classic soon. Thanks for the tour video. I'll be interested in your review when you get one to ride.
There is a good chance that exact Portofino Classic rim brake bike is inbound to me 😀👌
HOLY GRAIL GOAT need i go on?
Great vid of expert craftsmanship....but chuckled at the pixelation of the pin-up girl in the workshop!🤣
You know somebody would get bent if she was exposed.
@@GravelCyclist Some people just need to be angry about something! They should ride more!!🤣
100%! Too many people posting negative garbage content nowadays vs actually riding.
@@couttsylives Between dyeing their hair and protesting some hoax issue, how could they possibly find the time?
Just ordered my Portofino yesterday 😁
Great video & "very" beautiful bicycles!!!!!!! (if they perform as good as they look, it will make for great riding enjoyment/ rolling art/ pride of ownership)
Wait until you see the next video launching soon :)
just got to love Chromavalatto, the best bike finsih
Wonderful video. Personally, for their cost, I'm not sure if I'd feel comfortable riding anything but their road bikes. The thought of scratching a beautiful Portofino G gravel bike in a crash stops me cold. Do they only come with Campagnolo groupsets? Ooooof
You can purchase complete bikes with any groupset you desire, or as a frame / fork.
This Mr. Battaglin does not come across like a particularly egocentric person, but given the descriptions on the walls that all start with the words "I", "my" and "me", he seems to be quite fond of himself.
I can't even afford to say their name
Some of their artisan bikes aren't as expensive as you may think.
I'll have a rim brake Portofino with Super Record please.
I own a 2023 rim brake Portofino...
You can tell the gentleman is not impressed with the new Campy Super Record :)
I think he was somewhat bemused by the 45 / 29 2x chainrings on that crankset.
@@GravelCyclist ‘piccolo’ he said for the crankset hehe, I wonder what they were saying about the rear mech..
Haha indeed. In his day, it was probably 53/42 for his 2x setup and a 12-24 5 or 6 speed for his Vuelta and Giro win. In hindsight, I probably should have filmed his personal bike in the trophy room. I was a bit too excited about the Cromovelato :)
@@GravelCyclist that would have been cool, good thing you are invited again! Those chromovelato paint jobs look totally unique. Video also made me think, with all the main stream brands phasing out rim brakes, my next road bike could be a custom steel rim brake beauty!
I might have a rim brake Battaglin road bike inbound :)
G'Day-a Mate-a Grouse-a Bikes-a 😀
John Wicks bicycle!
Had to Google that one... Muscle / Sports car knowledge is about it around here, haha.
Bella bici..but disc nah, tires nah , 1x nah.
So what does the portifino r cost?
You need to ask Battaglin, they don't post pricing to their website.
