Lyrics:
Oh, Danny boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling
From glen to glen and down the mountainside
The summer's gone and all the roses falling
'Tis you, 'tis you must go and I must bide
But come ye back when summer's in the meadow
Or when the valley's hushed and white with snow
'Tis I'll be here in sunshine or in shadow
Oh, Danny boy, oh, Danny boy, we love you so
And if you come and all the flowers are dying
And I am dead, as dead I well may be
You'll come and find the place where I am lying
And kneel and say an ave there for me
And I shall hear, though soft you tread above me
And on my grave will warmer, sweeter be
And ye shall bend and tell me that you love me
And I shall sleep in peace until you come to me
Best version yet
Thank you, my Dad sang this too.❤
My father loved and played this beautiful Irish song on his "fiddle". I miss him every day. May God have mercy on his soul
So lovely
Never heard of John McDermott. I found him in a search of Danny Boy. I must say I've only ever heard one better rendition and that one was my grandfathers. John, thank you such a beautiful and unexpected gift.
This song was the most popular song in the English speaking world in the early 1900's. It spoke to a time when there where no airplanes and it took your entire life savings and a long trip across the ocean to immigrate to the new world. The chances that you'd ever get to go back for a visit before your parents died where slim. When my grandfather told the story of the day he left England to immigrate to Canada he said of his father "he knew he'd never see me again".
As it turned out he did revisit England unexpectedly 10 years later for month or so before they shipped him to France in the 1st WW. But just as in the song his father was dead by then.
Whenever I hear this song I get an image in my head of my great grandfather and my grandfather standing on a dock beside a ship that is about to sail for Canada.
That image was in the minds of millions in the early 1900's in Canada, the USA, Australia and New Zealand. The fist recording of it was made in Montreal and it became the 1st popular hit record.
@Robert Scarborough thank you so much for your story, I can see and feel your ancestors on the dock and the sorrow they felt in parting. I have my own experiences with parting stories. I have found that though they are sad and our heart is breaking, they somehow make life worth living because we were fortunate enough to have someone to love that much in our lives.
Amazing!!!❤
The a cappella Danny Boy by John is simply gorgeous. Gee, he was rather young in this video. Good looking guy, our John. Thanks for posting this.
My dad sang this song..All the time. This is beautiful.
This song for soul. Beautiful!
Beautiful and I'm sure, not a dry eye in the house.
The only time John's singing of this beautiful song is possibly bettered is when he sings it just after his mother died.❤
Always loved this song he does it so beautifully
Wow! Such beauty, such feeling (applause)
This is one of many pieces from John's newest release, "All Those Years"! not only does the DVD set include lovely songs and recordings, but intimate interviews with John's family and friends.. and John himself. All Those Years is available on his website under the "store" tab.
Just got the two DVDs and are awesome, especially DVD #2,a Christmas concert with friends.

'And you are giving us a wonderful privilege too.....thank you ....so much!!!!!
Wonderful.
My husband would sing this with my Mom, it was heart warming ☘️☘️☘️☘️
John McDermott used to sing the national anthems before Toronto Maple Leafs Hockey games. I think he maybe lives in Florida now because i saw him perform at a "Snowbirds" seminar near Tampa a few years ago.
Merci 🎶🎈🎶
❤️❤️❤️❤️
Another version on you tube when he looks\ is older. Prefer that one
Hi, I represent John McDermott and we'd like to speak to you about this account and the use of his videos. Is there a way to reach you?
Hi, I'm reaching out again on behalf of John. We would really like to be in touch with you, can you please connect with me?
I didn't know that Mel Gibson could sing so well.
Danny Boy was written by an English Man Frederic Weatherly and the melody is The Londonderry Air. Don't know why it's called an Irish song.
leave it alone pal
Fred, a pommie lawyer, only wrote the lyrics and used an old Irish tune, Londonderry Air he didn't write. If Fred had put the same lyrics to the Tennessee Waltz or Charlotte the Harlot, nobody would ever have heard of him. I have sheet music with other English words to Londonderry Air & there are some versions in Irish Gaelic, all beautiful but not as well known as Danny Boy. I would love to hear John McDermott sing Londonderry Air in Gaelic, either Irish or Scottish. Of course REAL Irish people might call it Derry Air but I won't go there.
The song was written by an Englishman who got the idea for the lyrics from an old Scottish poem that his sister in the USA sent him. He then set the Lyrics to an old traditional Irish tune. And as McDermott himself said "I'm sure there was a Welshman involved somewhere in there"
Anybody who feels the need to write in such a pedantic manner about the minutia of this beautiful song just doesn’t get it, and simply is not on the same wavelength of those of us, English, Irish, Bolivian, whatever who understand what the song & music is truly about. I don’t know if I should pity you or envy you your good fortune.
