I loved that you placed Alex in the middle, just awkwardly listening and looking at Adam and Ralph
I keep looking at him and he's almost in a trance 😂
As usual
Lol 😂
So glad this is no longer unlisted because this was so fun to watch
This was unlisted?
Yeah, I had to pirate it for a while because despite the fact that I would have happily given ad revenue for this video, I couldn’t find it anywhere 😢
Alex: starts the conversation
Also Alex: sits in complete silence the rest of the conversation
The Great Piracy Debate. I still lean more with Adum on this. The biggest reason I end up pirating is almost always, an older (and usually foreign) film that doesn't have easy availability on a streaming service or physical media in my region. Also, I have no qualms with pirating a film where most or all of the people involved with the making of the film are dead - I really don't care if the rights holder makes any money on a film they had no involvement with creating.
Many movies from the 1920s and before are public domain anyway
The biggest argument in favor of piracy being necesary and even morally good is the saving of media from being lost, thanks to streaming is a lot more easy fo art to dissapear a lot of series/games dont come with physical copies anymore and if they are removed from their plataform there wont be another way of geting them unless someone pirates them
There are also instances where the creators of a film/show/etc. are either indifferent to or actually encourage piracy of their product if it means more people are able to see it (e.g. Smiling Friends), so there are other ways for piracy to be "guilt-free".
At this rate where they’re literally blipping movies they’ve made and never releasing them, I’m pro-piracy
And then there's distributors like criterion and arrow...
Alex wistfully reaching for the Madagascar DVD at 3:34 😄
So glad someone else chuckled at that too 😂😂
I thought he was pushing Adam out of the way to see the big screen but I see what it really was now and that’s way funnier. 😂
That part annihilated me
Lustfully even
I NEVER NOTICED THAT!!!!!
Ralph’s T-Rex arms are the best part of this video.
I like that the animators took Ralph's "olive skin" literally. Green Boi Hours.
His legs are funnier to me lol
That and the statue in the background 👌
I know that these probably take a long time to make, but man are they endearing. I would like to see more of these, I think an animated version of Alex trying to describe the plot to Southland Tales would be very funny.
Nice Profile Pic!
@@RoryBrennanJEFFGUYXD Thanks fellow Mina profiler.
I remember when this episode came out, my first thought was "Ralph thinks he's gonna get arrested if he talks positively about piracy"
They took the description of "italian olive skin tone" too literally for Ralph
This is such a great animation! Alex is so British to just sit quietly and let the two people argue while at the end kinda nodding along to both sides 😂
Alex's deadpan reaction is priceless.
The contrast between 2018 energy levels and post 2020 energy levels is staggering
Yeah, I love the podcast but if they don't wanna do it anymore they should just stop lol
That's because the 2020's suck
I do think 2020 and the pandemic was what took the wind out of the sails a little bit and did a number on all of them. I remember when they reviewed the first Sonic movie it felt higher-energy but then the pandemic hit and Alex got Covid (more than once I think?) and I feel like he was a little more sullen since then. I don’t think it’s necessarily a huge negative though, they still seem to enjoy each other.
Covid and quarantine definitely messed things up, especially for Ralph it feels like.
Yeah now that I'm realizing this is from 2018 I'm just depressed lol
Gotta love Alex’s arm reaching after the Madagascar VHS😂 3:34
Ralph's design made me laugh uncontrollably.
Made Ralph a Christmas elf.
I love these designs, plus so many little jokes hidden in there. My favorite is when Adam brings out the Madagascar DVD and Alex tries to grab it 3:33
This is great! Props to the animator! 🙂
Thanks homie!
Lmao Alex really just tossed that powder keg of a question in and just watched Ralph and Adam go at it for 5 minutes
Actually in the original podcast, Ralph and Adum went at it for roughly 19 minutes.
Most streaming services and platform that host films and shows legalky profit more out of stealing your data and publicity than they do from your subscription to said services
This is so good. I’d love to see the conversation where Adam asks Alex about British words in this animation style.
Man, I forgot how much tension there was between Ralph and Adam in the first year of Sardonicast and how passive Alex used to be. It’s really interesting to see how much Adam and Ralph warmed up to each other and how much more confident Alex has gotten
Well, "tension" might be a bit much. Don't think either of them took it personally. Adum's just really good at winning arguments and Ralph wasn't used to that. Now he just throws his hands up and goes "I disagree" and doesn't even bother engaging 😂 Like with that Chris Pratt action film Adum hated but Ralph just didn't even care about
@@AndresGomez-ct7qb Ralph was found beaten to death by a gang of furries this morning.
@@AndresGomez-ct7qb yeah, they argued a lot in the older days. I listened to the one with critikal recently where they watched Martyrs and Ralph spent the whole time arguing with Adam over why he didn’t like the movie and Adam and Charlie didn’t get to say much…. 😂
(even if you listen to the “hot tub shark” argument at the beginning it sounds like maybe Ralph had a bit of a hard time getting along with Adam at first)
@@davidfelter417 Yeah, it was that until, I think, 'til one of the Spider-Man films came out and Ralph was very fond of the character and was soft on it whilst Adum nitpicked it all but Ralph just agreed to disagree, more or less and the vibe changed completely. Also, in the first couple dozen pods Adum was struggling with trying not to talk over Ralph and Alex to the point he even acknowledged it on a Q&A segment. I also get the impression (pure speculation) Ralph became a bit of a pot head after moving to LA as he chilled out massively 😂 We've come a long way.
@@AndresGomez-ct7qb oh yeah! I remember them mentioning in the second or third episode that the feedback was that they weren’t giving Alex much of a chance to talk lol
Now I’m not trying to psychiatrically evaluate, but I get the impression Adam really enjoys arguing/debating and as you mentioned he’s really good at backing up his opinions and finding weak spots in other peoples’ arguments, and then it took a little time for Ralph to realize it wasn’t personal. A lot of the time Alex would always go “oh wow” or “that’s interesting” or “I can see that” when Adam countered Alex’s opinion with his own so there weren’t a whole lot of disputes there, but Ralph seemed to always hold his ground and not back away from hills to die on.
Hell, I remember listening to their Avengers Endgame discussion as I was driving to school, and Ralph kept saying “I don’t really care about this movie or the time travel” and then he was arguing with Adam over whether or not the movie broke its own rules and at one point Adam said “If you don’t care then why are you arguing with me about it?” I audibly went “oh shit” lol
I want a Henry Selick directed Sardonicast stop motion movie
>pirate movie
>company loses $20
>delete movie
>company receives back $20
>pirate movie 1 million times
>company loses $20 million and declares bankruptcy
>buy company for a few dollars and become CEO
>delete all the pirated copies
>20 million deposited in my account
>suddenly CEO of my own movie production company and millions to make my dream movie
Even though this is a joke you do make a good point
I love the idea of Adam and ralph meeting each other irl for the first time and they just bicker the whole time
Love the changing backgrounds and settings. Especially the podcast studio is a nice touch. It's exactly how I would have imagined it if they recorded together in person.
I have no idea how long this took to make, but the staging and animation are absolutely amazing. Well done. Fantastic. Good job. Animator, I'm proud of you.
4:12 Love the "Pee Pee Silvia" joke on the chalkboard!
Piracy is additionally really important for media preservation, especially in gaming for discontinued titles that have not been re-released in any official medium, though the same can also be said for television and film in certain cases, for instance.
This is absolutely awesome. The character designs, the art direction, that hilarious FBI warning (pause and read through the whole thing, it's so worth it). Mad respect to the animator.
thnx chum
This is really impressive. The animation is really good, and I also really liked the lighting, editing, Alex quietly reaching his hand out for madagascar at 3:34, and the close-up of Alex at 4:59. Clearly a lot of love was put into this. This is amazing, Dan Xmas.
😊
Really captured Ralph's iconic green complexion and goblin-like proprtions.
IHE Reaching for madagascar killed me
Lol 😂
Well done 👏 this gave me a good chuckle of nostalgia. I love Ralph's enthusiasm before it died down. Adam does tend to overtake the conversation but I appreciate his energy. Sometimes Alex and Ralph just don't have it in them to debate anymore. Or maybe they're just really chill nowadays
When Alex reaches for Madagascar. Just pure gold
The semi-Ardman is so fitting for Sardonicast, even down to the detail of the fake fingerprint texturing
As soon as I realized this was custom-animated, I got goosebumps. This is fucking amazing omg.
This was freaking amazing. The pacing, the animation, the direction, the production value, the environments. I love this so much. I’m blown away and I’d watch a show in this style for 20+ seasons and I wouldn’t pirate it either
I've always been baffled by the clothing store analogy. Trying on clothes is not the main function of those clothes - the main function is wearing them in public or in your house. On the other hand, watching a movie... is the main function of the movie. It's not 'trying it out', it's experiencing 100% of what the paid product offers.
It’s also implying you should only have to pay for movies you think are good. It’s effectively the same as if movies you saw in theaters had a policy where you would just get a refund if you didn’t like the movie. Also, people like to say they buy movies they actually like but I feel like they still don’t really buy all that many. Unless with the clothing analogy he’s saying that people will watch part of it then switch to a legal method when they realize its something they want to watch, something I can’t imagine anybody actually does.
I think the argument works if you were to watch a shitty quality rip of the movie so that you don't get the full visual/audio experience. I've seen movies for the first time without feeling like I really got to experience them because of this
I’m also baffled by the stealing vs piracy argument. Stealing is taking someone else’s property without their permission. By taking a copy of someone’s intellectual property without their permission you are stealing it. Worst of all he ends it off saying essentially “they’re not the same that’s why they call it piracy and not stealing.” They call theft larceny in court, doesn’t mean that larceny isn’t theft.
@@joefission7179 exactly. Imagine going to a restaurant, ordering a meal, eating all of it, then walking out because you didn’t like it. Someone still cooked that meal, someone bought the ingredients to make it, and someone paid for the kitchen they cooked it in. Only paying for meals you like is not only illogical, it leaves so much room for interpretation. If everyone else thinks it’s good but I don’t, why does my opinion qualify whether or not the makers deserve to be paid. It’s kind of egotistical to think only those who can produce something you enjoy are worthy of payment.
@@TheShahofIrann I think the retort to that would be comparing pirating movies to sampling food, which is also not really accurate since there are no ways to sample a movie. Maybe streaming services should have an option of like watching the first 30 minutes or whatever before you pay for the rental. But that doesn’t exist as of yet so there’s really no real world comparison to trying on clothes or sampling food for movies.
Wow, this animation is just SO well conceived and executed, hats off, really well done, thank you.
aaaaaaaa the animation is so good!! I was the one who asked this question, I remember the argument went on for like 20 minutes lol
As an avid pirate this was an interesting watch
I really love these videos. Designs are so endearing and the presentation keeps on giving. Great job!
Love how he calls Ethan Hawke “Ethan Hunt”
god damn the ears with subsurface scattering is so fucking well done
Whoever made this did a great job. I love this. Would love to see more animated stuff from the podcast. Brings new viewers in while also capturing the fun moments for old viewers to watch.
I just now noticed The Cool Cat statue in the background.
This is awesome, and one of the best clips you could have picked to animate and a point really worth the explanation. Great work!
An interesting debate, but tbh I was mostly paying attention to the animation. It was so fun. Especially the parts that would animate the analogies/examples given :)
My take is piracy is fine as long as it's a movie that no longer needs support. So while I think cribbing an indie flick that could use the funds is wrong, I don't think anyone at Marvel is hurting if you download Endgame after its release or older classic movies that have already made their money like Back to the Future or Jurassic Park.
Agreed.
Bro this is fucking amazing
This reminded me a lot of the Ricky Gervais Show, animated segments of a podcast with Ricky Gervais, Stephen Merchant, and Karl Pilkington. I wish Adum, Alex, and Ralph had the money to pay a team of animators to make half an hour episodes consisting of highlights from each podcast set to fitting animation
Idk if it's been a bit or joke, as I'm catching up with JARcast, but it would be perfect to see a cut to some shore, whenever Ralph says "sure."
Don't know why this was a discussion at all. Both of them agreed that piracy is a good thing in certain cases but then it devolves into a semantics argument about "What is stealing?" 😂 Nice animation though
Ralph being so tiny is perfect.
An animated Sardonicast is something I never knew that I needed in my life
I like that Alex tries to reach for Madagascar and Adum won't let him have it.
It is ASTOUNDING this comes from an episode back in 2018 and the topic is still relevant.
Listening to this the ONE THING that pops into my mind is HBOMax removing a lot of the cartoons from their service and the *literal creators of the shows* had to basically tell their audience, "Pirate it. Not like you have any other options."
This was awesome. Wouldn't mind more animated clips from the podcast.
I love the SpongeBob timecards and music in the background!
Alex is a bit naive if he thinks paying for a movie automatically means your supporting the creator. What about the pre-owned dvd market? The studio makes as much money off a legal used dvd purchase as an illegal digital download (i.e. fuckin zilch👌🏻)
But they are trying to make that harder to do in the streaming age. Digital only releases of films and series are increasingly common. I don't know if I'll ever see Midnight Mass again if Netflix goes under
I love how the pages actually have writing on them
I live in australia, so because of streaming laws roughly 50% of the catalogue in streaming that i paid for is excluded, to this very minute Oldboy 2005 wasnt on ANY service anywhere and i had to pirate it, the restrictive nature of Streaming Services and Australia is long and complicated, but at the end of the day, if i cant watch American Psycho, Oldboy, old movies from the 50s and so much more than you bet your ass im pirating if it means that i get to watch the movies instead of wait for it to be added to a service i dont subscribe to or even worse, HBO Max, which isnt available here, fuck corpos for forcing me to do this but im not going to stop until this country is taken seriously by entertainment industries
Considering the thanos snapping of a multiple animated projects right now, this video is pretty topical, unfortunately. Especially with companies deciding to remove products people paid for and animators and creators full on endorsing piracy as a way to preserve media.
I hope to see more videos like this. I love your animation style
3:33 Alex reaching for the Madagascar DVD 😭💀
Great job!!!!!
Now try the One Cut of the Dead discussion 😉
yes because zach snyder won't be able to eat lunch if I pirate The Watchmen, Ralph
Ralph's point about taking away money from people would be a good one if anyone except the studio execs hadn't already been paid before the movie is out.
No way do the shareholders at Disney need my money
This was fantastic oh my god
I've wanted to see an animated depiction of this debate forever. This didn't disappoint.
Animation is very good! It reminds me of Aaardman shorts. Is that a jenkem bottle on a table?
First off, fantastic job by the animator, this looks fantastic! Also, Love watching Adum play devils advocate just for the sake of arguing😂 Even when he knows he's in the wrong, he can still find a way to sound like he's right.
Why is he in the wrong?
This was a product you should’ve paid to watch this video
I love how the Madagascar movies are sitting on the table during the podcast 😂
This is great!
Really well done. I could see some visual fingerprints on the characters faces. Great attention to detail on how clay functions and why it looks so good in film.
Another point is that if I were to buy physical media I’d usually buy it on Ebay or just used generally because it’s cheaper. But me doing this gives the artist absolutely nothing in terms of support for their creation, to them it’s the same difference with me buying second hand and me pirating. But one is infinitely more frowned upon than the other.
adams analogy of the clothes is terrible because a movie is a one and done product. you don't get the entire use out of a pair of underwear or pants after trying it on. You essentially get the entire use out of a film after one viewing. you metaphorically throw the movie into the dumpster after you watch it because you've seen the film. you've done all that the director is asking of you which is watch their product.
clothes are meant to sustain you for upwards of years.
Also because..... you know...... clothes are an actual physical tangible good good and movies are just strings of binary code that can be copied and shared at will.
this is amazing, i love you guys and seeing a lovely animated for your stuff is just great to see. i watched you guys when you first started this podcast and remember the episode this is taken from. life happened and i drifted away but now i got a lot of good stuff to catch up on.
Like always, Adam and Ralph are the only ones talking and Alex just hangs out
THIS IS FUCKING BRILLIANT. it also made me realize how crazy Ralph was involved in the discussion back then
Yea I don't know why he's gotten so quiet.
@@Ezrablynx He realized he's full of bad takes and chose to be quiet
@@returnalnocturnal7729 or he got tired of people like you criticizing him in the comments of every episode and doesn't want to put in the effort anymore
@@returnalnocturnal7729 ironic considering your take is garbage
I love that the background/setup looks like a parody of the Joe Rogan Podcast.
Little me pirated risk of rain 1 and was so blown away by the experience I cried an then when I got the money bought the game
The whole clothing store analogy really reminded me of that
What if you want an efficient way to independently store and catalogue media. Physical media takes up space in your home and can be labor intensive to transport in the event of a move. Sure you can buy a purely digital copy via a service like iTunes or Amazon Prime video but, from my understanding, those are stored on their servers and could potentially be removed or modified at any time. There should be an option to pay for a mp4 file or something. Musicians do it all the time through services like bandcamp.
I have the same issue with graphic novels and comics, I like to buy weird obscure shit to have it on my shelf but doing that I bought so many bad stuff that I don't ever read or look again. So, I read them on CBR or scans online and if I like them, I buy them at the end of the day. With movies, I buy the bluray or go to the theater but is even harder to do when the cinemas on my country only show marvel movies, so the only option I have is torrent
This is CINEMA
That animation is hilarious.
The main issue with purchasing movies online is whatever medium you buy them through can just take it away at any time. Really you never get to own anything unless you pirate. 10 years from now when that streaming service you purchased it through goes out of business you will lose everything you "own." When you pirate you get all of your movies together in one catalog, which you can back up on your own, and you get to own those movies for the rest of your life. We have already started seeing cases where people's purchased movies are no longer carried on platforms so they just take them away.
That’s a very good point. I think there needs be some new laws put in place to deal with that cause it is a new problem pretty much.
Really insightful feedback from Alex. ✍️
Alex reaching for the Madagascar VHS lmao
Kickassia two 😂 I especially loved that Derek Savage animation.
more of this please
I'm glad I found you guys, I can listen to some reasonable individuals finally
Its easy to be Ok with digital piracy when you think of it in terms of large greedy corporate entities like Hollywood. What about an individual selling digital content? Someone jus trying to get by?
They got the Joe Rogan set up
Holy shit that's a fuckload of work
these videos are incredible. hope to see more in the future
This is insanely good quality lol
This was really well done DanXmas 👍
How long did this take to make? Really impressive
"Ethan Hunt movie"
Damn Ralph became green
I want more of this
