One point they got wrong, this film is a sequel to the Goof Troop cartoon, which is why the characters exist in a way that assumes you know who they are instead of introducing them for the first time.
Yup! Which is also why people assume Pete got divorced since he had a wife in the show
Max and Roxanne were in House of Mouse as well, implying that series also took place in the Goof Troop continuity.
I never saw goof troop (that I remember)
But I loved this movie at 5-10YO
It was like the Adam Sandler romcom movies (even had Pauly shore) but for kids.
My point was that I liked it started as though you should know these characters.
It doesn't spell it out like a kids movie usually does (not saying it's high brow writing but it's almost satire of the genre)

The biggest mystery is not what happened to Goofy's wife but what happened to Pete's wife and daughter between when Goof Troop ended and The Goofy Movie was released. Are they dead? Did Pete only gain custody of PJ in the divorce? Did Pete lose ownership of the car lot in the divorce so now he works as a department store photographer? This drove me nuts as a kid.
I just assumed they were also on a father-son-holiday?

During the rebranding into the everyman where he mysteriously played every part in the cartoons, the "main" Goofy was called George G. *_Geef_* and Max went by George G. Geef Junior, or usually just Junior. At some point he apparently had his name legally changed though, because it appears as Goofus "Goofy" Goof nowadays. Oh, I guess it _is_ a nickname? But seriously, if you have Disney+ watch one of the old cartoons, I promise you, it's "Geef" (they even spell it out at least once).

Weirdly enough Max's voice actor didn't actually do any of the singing in this movie. They brought in another guy but the other guy also isn't that great
That's actually a very common thing Disney has a habit of doing. Typically a non-singing actor plays a main character and a non-acting singer Sings for them during the songs. See: Aladdin, The Lion King, etc.
It's an odd choice because Jason Marsden (Max) can sing pretty well.
Aaron Lohr is a good singer, he's just singing as "Max" so of course it's not going to be super polished.

Jason and Aaron actually knew each other and were friends prior to them doing voice/singing work on this movie. Jason was surprised when Aaron told him something along the lines of: "Yeah, I got this job singing for this guy who can't sing" and then when Aaron found out it was Jason he was like: "Dude, why didn't you tell me it was you?"

animation student here! One theory about the gloves is that they were inspired by minstrel shows. Another is that animating the hands in black and white was much easier if they weren't all black, thus the white gloves for contrast. It could be either reson or maybe both 🤷
i feel like this movie is about finally accepting your parents as they are and a lot of max's anger comes from being ashamed of his working-class father. i find it actually very relatable and it is like a much better ladybird to me and i consider it to be one of the greatest examples of class struggle on screen

Maybe not class struggle in the economic sense but class struggle in the social status sense. Goofy is a lowly person working a unimpressive job while being a complete dork. Max wants better for himself than what Goofy has and the film from Max's side is about him understanding the value of being a good person which is something his father has in spades.
The argument is directly acknowledged in the bathtub scene where Pete basically tells Goofy that being a nice person is worthless and being mean gets you everything that matters.

So, piece of trivia. For some reason, even though Max's VA can sing, they replaced him as Max's singing voice with a different person for this movie. You can actually tell because the singer's voice is deeper than the regular VA's.
So at one point Adum says Goofy is "autistic" for not being able to pick up on his kid's emotional queues and as someone on the spectrum myself I am honest to God impressed to see someone use that word so situationally correctly!

Max was also a character well before “ A Goofy Movie”(1995). On the show “Goof Troop”(1992), a sitcom style show featured a lot of the characters that would then appear in the movie.

It didn’t make the Adum and Pals edit but on the uncut commentary track Adam revealed the existence of the second move and that it was called An Extremely Goofy Movie and the other two didn’t believe him. I honestly don’t blame them.

I watched this movie on VHS the day before this was uploaded, guess it’s time for round 2! Seriously this movie is great. It sounds corny, but this movie has HEART, something sorely lacking in creativity bankrupt Disney films today
For a secondary Disney movie, the animation is all around good. Story wise, nothing barnstorming, but it is at least solid.

Im south american, (colombian) and i can confirm: for us, America is the continent, not the country. In spanish "americano" does not reffer to people of the US. It reffers to people from this continent (so yes, uruguay, brazil, ecuador, argentina, peru, etc). We use words like "estadounidense", "norteamericano" or "gringo" instead. In fact, we make fun of "americans" for apropriating the name of the continent and all.
