I agree, firstly just writing I love you would somewhat feel disingenuous (you probably at one point said I love you/love you too just because or you just had respond back or something) so it wouldn’t have been as impactful. Goofy in the film remembers the game with the soup and all the memories as “hi dad” not I love you so max writing hi dad shows he still cares and remembers all that
@DarkLightPrince Ducktales is one of those perfect shows that just makes itself more perfect with shit like that man. Its become my 3rd favorite show of ALL fucking time. Right up there with Doctor Who and Gravity Falls (another perfect series)
Why would goofy still have a picture of them? Because in once upon a Christmas, one of the shorts was about goofy meeting Mona (Max's girlfriend at the time).
The whole father-son dynamic of this movie sticks with me to this day. Even now, in my 30's looking to start a family, I think of the different parenting styles.
My favorite part of this movie is that rewatching it a little while ago, I noticed something. I think you can actually see the reason Roxanne and Max aren't together in later movies within the first like, minute of this one. And it's that in that intro scene, where Max literally has her on a pedestal. As cute as the two of them are, there really isn't a basis for their relationship besides that they're attracted to each other and they listen to the same artist. And I'm not saying that either of them are bad or wrong for that. What I am saying is that I think they just weren't as compatible as Max thought they would be. And that's why we don't see Roxanne again. Am I looking too deep? Yes. Do I care? No.
Honestly that could be a movie on its own since Goofy Also has had the most love interests out of all the classic characters, maybe they have in common that not all relationships work but you still move forward
Yeah, it works pretty well despite the lack of evidence in the actual sequel itself. That is the kind of point that tells a truth I would have liked to know when I was younger.
I think there was some Disney Christmas movie, one of those direct-to-video ones, where there was a storyline about Max bringing his girlfriend home over winter break during college. Said girlfriend is not Roxanne. It's just amazing how this movie manages to be realistic both within its story and outside of it. You're probably not going to end up spending the rest of your life with your first romantic partner in high school. Same thing for relationships in college. But also, college is usually where a lot of us start to emotionally mature because we're trying to get ready to start working and live independently (at least by American standards, which have become unrealistic, but you'll have to research that yourself), and for a lot of us that makes us a lot more appreciative and a lot less embarrassed by our parents. If it wasn't for that roadtrip, Max would probably have delayed introducing Roxanne to his dad - if at all - for as long as possible. BUT on top of that, with the better (but not perfect, because nobody's perfect) communication with Max and Goofy, we've gone from Max being embarrassed about his dad and Goofy feeling comfortable with who he is, to Goofy being worried about embarrassing Max, but his son is comfortable enough with who he is to bring his girlfriend home for an extended period of time! Combine the Tariq analysis with the Sideways analysis about the music in this movie and just. This movie. THIS! MOVIE! How did it end up being SO GOOD?!
I'm so happy you talked about the hot tub scene in so much depth. It always struck me how it really seemed to imply that Pete used authoritative force on his son, which is a pretty dark and serious move on Disney's part, but expressed it in a perfect way.
The frustration of how perfect this movie is hits. I look for flaws in everything I watch and I've been watching this movie since my childhood, yet I cannot for the life of me find something wrong with it. They did everything so perfectly in what was basically a niche film. Like why? Why is A freaking Goofy Movie so on point!?! I didn't realize people saw this as a "black" movie. I've never seen it as one and I honestly still don't. The stuff they do throughout the movie that's typically associated with black culture was everywhere in the 90s. It felt like they were just trying to capture what was relevant, which just happened to incorporate a lot of that.
Goofy movie is a somewhat underrated Disney classic I didn't personally see the movie until maybe 2004 or 2005 sense I wasn't born until 2000 but I remember my grandma letting me pick out a VHS movie to watch that my older cousin previously owned and I've loved the movie ever sense then it's definitely one of my favorite Disney films. Also the opening scene in this movie where Max has a bad dream and turns into his father Goofy use to scare me as a child.
I don't think it's underrated per se, as there are many videos talking positively about it. I think it's more a sleeper hit, where it didn't get the recognition it deserved when it was first released but many peops saw it later and fell in love with it. I didn't knew this movie existed up to. I dunno, 2008 or 2009.
24:22 Damn after watching this video for the third time, I realized something. Pete son "respects" but Goofy said Max Loves him. That shit hits like a truck, the difference in parenting style, you can have all the respect in the world that doesn't mean you are loved.
It's so awesome that A Goofy Movie is getting the respect it deserves these days. Even for people that weren't that impressed by it initially, it's one of those that demands a second viewing. I remember enjoying it after seeing it for the first time, but thinking it was sorta gimmicky. That Disney was just trying to stay hip and relevant or whatever. Let's cast Pauley Shore! In the 90s there was this dumb perspective about Disney that every one of their films needs to be a grandiose adventure starring royalty and stuff. Then seeing it again 5 year later, the movie floored me. The character relationship stuff is so incredibly well done, and the modern working class setting is such a breath air compared to Disney's stuff in the 90s and earlier. It was really unfair of me to think less of it initially because it was a Good Troop spinoff and had a (gasp) pop song as it's big climax. That dance sequence is amazing. Perfect culmination for the film. Great job summarizing what is so great about it. Planning on rewatching this again on Saturday. (Also why would you try to review something in 60 seconds? That's so gimmicky, man.)
On traditional 2D animation colors I think why it looks “better” is because the process of filming the animation cells kinda washes out the color just a little bit. Like it’s saturated but not too bright that it hurts your eyes. Another possible reason it that the color kinda match how our eyes colors in the real world. Also using real in and paint helps Side note. I’ve noticed that a lot of college final projects animations use a color palette 🎨 similar to traditional 2D animation
I just realized that Goofy and Dr.Doofenshmirtz would get along really well! Both aren’t taken very seriously and they have one child that they can be very overprotective of.
For a while, I had trouble falling asleep, and my sleep schedule was completely fucked up, but Tariq’s videos actually helped me fall asleep. His voice is so soothing. So, if I had watched this video when it came out last night, I would have probably fallen asleep anyways. (I’m not insulting Tariq’s content, by the way, it’s actually what I love about it; how chill and relaxing it is.)
"Bonus Comment" An Extremely Goofy Movie is low-key the real sleeper hit of the Disney Direct to DVD Sequel era films. Much like Cinderella 3 it's a film you don't think will be any good but because the writers had so little expectations; They just went hog wild with it and it was better because of it. Don't judge a book by it's cover, sometimes it might hide a real Certified Hood Classic; Instead of a POS only good for leaving your drink on so you don't stain your table.
Also the Fox and the Hound 2, I know most don't like that film because "It's a midquel and dumb." But I have never seen a single film that has that Country Fair vibe much like that one, most films try to make the Fair like Disneyland with how amazing and gran it is or Action Park with how Dangerous they are, this film got that right mix of Gran Fun, and Danger from the Town Drunk running things, that and Dixie probably turned me into a furry
@@nickrustyson8124 Ah yeah that one. Yeah sometimes the aesthetic of a film can save it if the rest doesn't. "I think the Critic even somewhat liked it and he was pretty critical of most DDTDS era films." "That's Disney Direct to DVD Sequels for short."
"most of these problems could be solved if they just talked to each other." I always hate that argument or critique cause that can go with 99% of people's problems in real life. It's never quite that simple, and even when it is, people are stubborn or clueless or just dumb. That's always a realistic aspect in movies and shows to me. It's always fine to complain in passing, but whenever people are reviewing things, i just find it silly that they point those things out in movies/shows cause that's the point. It IS that simple, but no one really does that in real life until it's too late or the last minute.
You're not wrong but, at least when I see it, it's usually something stupid like 'girlfriend walks in to a room to see boyfriend hugging on another girl and flips out and takes a baseball bat to his car' like, JUST TAKE 2 SECONDS TO TALK TO EACH OTHER. Plenty of times where it's more complicated, for sure, but that's at least where I see it, the stupid Disney live action shows stuff.
I think there's a range of makes sense to not. You have to kinda justify why the two characters have this communication barrier or it doesn't make sense or feels unnatural. So it really depends on the movie how much it "works".
"Fam, I have seen this movie more times than I've heard somebody say my name this year." My guy, those words were both cathartic and soul wrenching cause I feel them deep in my bones this year.
Same! RUclips creators have been getting me through this year... and I've heard a lot of them touch on how they are struggling too. We are all really just in this same boat and they are getting us through in a big way.
Funny story, I remember watching the goofy movie prior to seeing goof troop , then when I finally saw the show I was wondering where the heck Pauly Shore's character was , not realizing he was originally made for the film.
This comment made me google pauley shore's voice roles and apparently he's voicing pinocchio in that cringey animated movie with the yassified pinocchio
Dude. You killed me at the "animation will never look like this again". You're so right. I'm usually happy enough to see something frame-by-frame instead of rigged up, but it's still a shadow of the beauty of traditional animation.
I LOVE this movie. Watched it again recently with my siblings and my sister pointed out that the "Odd Couple" from the highway are at the concert and the wife is the lady singing. I had never realized this before and thought it was a cool detail. I enjoy your content!
Art Babbitt, being an early 1900s person, once described Goofy as "an everlasting optimist, a gullible Good Samaritan, a half-wit, a shiftless, good-natured colored boy, and a hick". So Goofy being black is pretty canon I guess?
Lol Art Babbitt Richard Williams' caricature of him as a stuck up his ass maestro at his desk came into my head when I read this comment...and now I'm f uckin dead😂🤣
That waterfall scene is one of the best scenes ever. Like, rewatching that, it hits WAY too hard! I hate how great this movie is, and how I remember watching it like 15 times when I was younger. I won't lie, I only remember Sylvia from An Extremely Goofy Movie. Her design was killer in multiple ways.
I love how angry Goofy is in the car after the motel stay. We've seen Goofy frustrated, irritated, confused etc but never truly angry, and at his own son! Must be thinking "Dammit,Pete was right!" Also does anyone else think that Jason Derulo would be perfect as a live acton Powerline?
Yeah and it wasn’t just the typical cartoon smokestack comedic angry overreaction, it’s anger mixed with sheer disappointment. You can see on his expression he was basically “I gave you the chance to do the right thing and you didn’t, you didn’t do it” the fact goofy of all characters was showing that is really sorta shocking
I’m gonna be completely honest, the parts of these videos where you talk about art and writing are really inspiring to me as a young artist who likes cartoons and wants to make one. I think you’re really cool, Tariq :)

What's Goofy about this movie is how much feels they packed under the hood of this little guy. "I mean it's called the Goofy Movie not the Feels Movie."
That Snoopy reference nearly made me spit my Pepsi! This is one of my favorite movies. I went in at 15 years old expecting to laugh my ass off. I didn't expect Goofy to make me cry too!

Gah so well done man. This movie was so amazing and it meant so much to me and to hear that others that normally haven't felt represented enough in kid films could see this and connect with this. It gives a sense of community any time I see someone in a powerline shirt and I'm like "hey man nice shirt" and I enter at least an half hour discussion of how beautiful of a movie the goofy movie is. Its a rare gem that I think any generation or walk of life can connect with
I love this review! You hit all the nails on the head and spoke about the character development in detail and the characters just naturally reacting to each other and to their circumstances. You touched on things that I feel are so unnoticed like Pete eavesdropping on Max and PJ and Goofy screaming as he’s falling and Max’s reaction (chills everytime). && Landing on stage and Powerline doesn’t call security. So A Goofy Movie actually has a special place in my Heart even though it's not my favorite Disney Movie. When this movie came out, I was at an age where I was growing out of Disney Movies, and I was having difficulty with my dad. In fact, I didn't want to see this movie, but My dad was taking me there because he wanted to do something with me . I remember distinctly not wanting to see this movie and not want to be with him, so I was a lot like Max going into this movie. This movie was what I needed and I was able to see my dad in a different light. It will always be one of the best Movie Experiences I had as a kid with a family member.
Wow I never even noticed how great it is that max didn’t say I love you in the soup like i expected, its really subtle in the way max tries to show he cares
man, i've really been thinking the same thing about animation on film generally looking at least even a bit better than digital does. im constantly trying to figure out how to match that look with more subdued, warmer color palettes. it's the biggest thing i notice when comparing the first movie and its sequel visually.
Great analysis and really well done use of the guest stars. I especially appreciated when you talked about the modern setting. I smack my head whenever I see the occasional Disney purist get upset when Disney makes an animated film that's not a fairy tale or a period piece. They should be allowed to make a movie in any time period they want and it's good to see a variety in the settings of Disney's animated movies. "A Goofy Movie" being so contemporary is, as you said, key in why it's resonated with many people. I love the Disney fairy tales and fantasy films as much as the next person, but it's great to see them give us a "Goofy Movie" or "Rescuers Down Under" or "Wreck-It Ralph" once in a while. Heck, "Lilo & Stitch" is one of my favourite animated movies of all-time.

@@marzblaq7267 yes! Definitely Jodeci! Been saying that for yrs!
The soup saying Hi Dad was way more impactful than if it said I Love You
I agree, firstly just writing I love you would somewhat feel disingenuous (you probably at one point said I love you/love you too just because or you just had respond back or something) so it wouldn’t have been as impactful. Goofy in the film remembers the game with the soup and all the memories as “hi dad” not I love you so max writing hi dad shows he still cares and remembers all that
Agreed. Goofy literally calls it "Hi Dad Soup".
One weird thing about the lack of Roxanne in the sequel is in House of Mouse, which premiered after it, Roxanne and Max are still dating.
Nice!!
@DarkLightPrince Ducktales is one of those perfect shows that just makes itself more perfect with shit like that man. Its become my 3rd favorite show of ALL fucking time. Right up there with Doctor Who and Gravity Falls (another perfect series)
HoM was before Max went to college.
@@nopenopenopenope4076 that was not something I knew. There goes the ship.
Agreed tbh, tht was a rlly good analysis tht I didn’t even pick up on
Mood.

Yessir
I'm so happy you talked about the hot tub scene in so much depth. It always struck me how it really seemed to imply that Pete used authoritative force on his son, which is a pretty dark and serious move on Disney's part, but expressed it in a perfect way.
i went from watching your videos as i braid my hair to calling you out your name. it really has been a strange year :-)
This part of it was the good strange 💗
We love a good crossover
I’m fangirling over that too hard rn
Saaame but like... Still braiding my hair
Dude same, that opening scene is freaky when you're a kid.
@@lauramarschmallow2922 That better describes it.
😂😂 I can't remember it scared me as a kid but I know that this movie helps a special place in my heart especially the music . It's just so well made!
I remember I used to always watch it on Toon Disney(RIP)

On traditional 2D animation colors
I think why it looks “better” is because the process of filming the animation cells kinda washes out the color just a little bit. Like it’s saturated but not too bright that it hurts your eyes. Another possible reason it that the color kinda match how our eyes colors in the real world. Also using real in and paint helps
Side note. I’ve noticed that a lot of college final projects animations use a color palette 🎨 similar to traditional 2D animation
Yeah digital has a higher chance of being too bright if you don't know what your doing, while it's kinda impossible to make it too bright on paper.

Damn you really figured out why Black people connect with this movie and it was in our face the whole damn time. lmao

@Andre Bryant whats your take n the matter if you dont mind my asking?
"most of these problems could be solved if they just talked to each other." I always hate that argument or critique cause that can go with 99% of people's problems in real life. It's never quite that simple, and even when it is, people are stubborn or clueless or just dumb. That's always a realistic aspect in movies and shows to me. It's always fine to complain in passing, but whenever people are reviewing things, i just find it silly that they point those things out in movies/shows cause that's the point. It IS that simple, but no one really does that in real life until it's too late or the last minute.
I hate it in real life too!
Too true
If done well it can seem less like a flaw of the writing, but more of a flaw in the characters themselves
"Fam, I have seen this movie more times than I've heard somebody say my name this year."
My guy, those words were both cathartic and soul wrenching cause I feel them deep in my bones this year.

Art Babbitt, being an early 1900s person, once described Goofy as "an everlasting optimist, a gullible Good Samaritan, a half-wit, a shiftless, good-natured colored boy, and a hick". So Goofy being black is pretty canon I guess?
