      I would love to see the cabin in person, too. But you realize that as log cabins go, it's relatively new. Where I'm from and even where I live now (West Virginia and Virginia), it's nothing to see a log house that's over 150 years old. Of course, you need a good foundation for them to last that long. But then, nobody calls them cabins; they're log houses.

    • @gardeningwithpuppies6752
      @gardeningwithpuppies6752 3 года назад

      @@kennethquesenberry2610 We live in a log cabin, too but it is about twenty years old. We have others on our road that are over one hundred. I love going by them and imagining what their lives were like back when the area I live in was undeveloped. Life had to be so hard but rewarding.

    • @kennethquesenberry2610
      @kennethquesenberry2610 3 года назад

      @@gardeningwithpuppies6752 Nice comment. I live in Northern Virginia now and one will see many log houses if one travels west from here, although you will have to look for them. Most have additions now. They all look like they might have been built by the same person, too, and none were built the way Proenneke built his cabin. The notching is all different and most used squared logs. In some places, including the log house where I lived for a while, had very wide squared logs, as much as eight inches. Some of those log houses were in towns, too. None were very big but they were at least larger than Proenneke's cabin. Log houses are still very popular in parts of the world, mainly in Northern Europe, Germany, Russia and Scandinavia, largely because of the large forests in those places. Early settlers in this country did not built log cabins because there were none where they came from, either Britain or Spain. A romantic traditional house in some places in this country is an adobe hacienda, not a log house.
      Yes, life was hard--for some people--and that's still true, of course. It's always harder on the frontiers but some places are less bountiful than others. The soil can be poor, you might not have enough land, water can be a problem and winters can be difficult. Other landowners can be a problem, too. Proenneke, however, was not self-sufficient by any means. Read his books and you'll understand. He was more independent than most of us are these days, to be sure. He was very frugal. He had no water bill, no gas bill (he owned a truck, though), no property tax, and so on. His lifeline was the air service from Lake Clark that brought his basic needs, plus the mail. Although he did plant a garden the first year, he apparently grew relatively little of what he ate. He certainly ate meat and did hunt at first but eventually gave that up. He wasn't above scrounging the leftovers from other hunter's kills, though, and always remarked about how much they left.
      In the places in the country where I lived and where my father lived, people did hunt. But there were no deer or other large game like Elk. They all got killed off generations ago. "Living off the land" meant farming and the best farm land was owned by rich plantation owners who used slaves. Don't kid yourself about any romantic farm life.

    I don't know why Dick created that beautiful fireplace the way he did. The entire fireplace is outside of the cabin and I think he would have been much warmer if he had used bracing and masonry to bring the fireplace into the cabin by 5 or 6 inches. I wonder if he put a lot of rock on the inside so that the rock would heat up and radiate heat. The way it's designed, nearly all the heat is lost and goes straight up the chimney. I also wonder how he cleaned it. That had to be used every day of the year for cooking and very heavily 9 months of the year for heating.
