- The Top 10 Black and white western Movies -
Before color film was in common use. Usually reserved for those studios that had a big enough budget. So reserved for the bigger more epic movies, with the big name actors. Black and white was the industry standard since silent films. Cinematographers became well adept at how to use it effectively.

The Oxbow Incident was one of the best movies I've ever seen.
Globetrotter I agree wholeheartedly! Also the outcasts of poker flats
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance is the best western ever made just a classic
Very true. This is John Ford all time favourite followed by My Darling Clementine n Searchers.Lee Marvin is superb. He overshadowed both legendary John Wayne n James Stewart.Impeccable direction n music.
Another '39 great B&W Western was Destry Rides Again. The fight between Marlene Dietrich and Una Merkel is legendary (some real damage done, they did own stunts). Also the ending brawl was incredibly choreographed. Clever movie too.
40's The Westerner had terrific acting interplay between Gary Cooper and Walter Brennan, showcasing each's range and charisma.
Thanks again
Definitely, "The Ox-Bow Incident." One of the best westerns, ever. "Red River", too. John Wayne's, hard-ass, role, of the trail boss, "Tom Dunson" is one of the best western characters, ever.
Lone Star - Gable, Gardner, Crawford.
Lonely are The Brave - the BEST!
Will take a look, thanks
Lonely are the brave. My Darling Clementine. The fastest gun alive
Nice list. Check out 'Day of the Outlaw' with Robert Ryan, Burl Ives, and Tina Louise (Ginger from Gilligan's Island). Really good movie.
Cheers
I would add Westward the Women, a black and white western starring Robert Taylor, Hope Emerson, Denise Darcell and a lot of other actresses. It focuses on the way the women overcame many obstacles, including Indian attacks, weather and clashing personalities, to reach their destination. Directed by William Wellman.
I stumbled upon your videos and I really enjoy them. This is a very good list. I'd add in Bad Day at Blackrock over Red River or The Furies, but that is just me.
The Oxbow Incident is quite possibly the most under rated western ever. I never liked The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, it was always too hokie for me, but I also recognize that I am in the EXTREME minority. High Noon may be the ultimate man movie, it is certainly up there with Hombre, Bad Day at Blackrock, Stagecoach, and The Shawshank Redemption.
The Gunfighter is brilliantly done, it shows the passage of time and how it is too late for Ringo, and the fallacy of wanting to be like him.
Stagecoach is Wayne's 2nd best movie behind The Searchers.
The Treasure of Sierra Mandre has one of the most famous lines of all time, but few know it is from this movie. Humphry Bogart's transformation from gold fever is solid and sad.
Winchester 73 is a hokie movie that you just can't stop watching. Oh yeah, Shelly Winters is still young and hot.
All good movies, not all movies tick everyone's boxes. But they all have a place at the table. Don't make them like they used to.
310 to Yuma 3:48 - a great Glenn Ford movie!!! Glenn Ford RUclips Channel: ruclips.net/user/RobbGF
All of your pics are classic westerns and if I may add one more to your list of top black and white westerns how bout Glen Ford in the 'Fastest Gun Alive'. Great stuff.
Would have had The Fastest Gun Alive and My Darling Clementine over High Noon and Sierra Madre.
@@waratah08
Although Sierra Madre is an outstanding Bogart movie, set I believe it is in 1925, I would list it with other B&W greats like Lonely Are The Brave.
As far as High Noon, it was truly a great western movie that deserves a spot on the list.
But My Darling Clementine and Fastest Gun Alive are both great western B&W films that certainly could have been included on the list just as well.
High Noon is the greatest western ever made!
@@wvmountaineer69
'High Noon' is a gem 👍
@T S, have you watched Along Came Jones? Gary Cooper
My Darling Clementine would be on my list. Fun Fact: The first Western I rented from a video store in 1982 was The Searchers. I was pretty disappointed when it was in color and thought Ted Turner colorized it. It was the first time watching it on a color TV. It makes a good Western in B&W.
I love 9 of the 10 with "High Noon" my favorite. I did not like "The Furies" at all and would replace it with "My Darling Clementine".
Or the Ox Bow incident!
The tin star,henry fonda, the storm rider,scot brady.both b and w
Can't argue with this list. Lee Marvin as Liberty Valance is one of the great villains. Another one is Javier Bardem in 'No Country for Old Men'.
Check out my channel ruclips.net/channel/UCrtQI0rT8Ur4KhMFLlcSrrQ I have videos on Villains
leaving out these 3 Ford westerns is criminal IMO.....Rio Grande, Fort Apache and My Darling Clementine. All 3 are mandatory viewing for fans of the genre. An early 60's goodie that gets almost no attention is Arthur Penn's The Lefthanded Gun
Reading all these comments is very interesting. Folks care deeply about Westerns and have very strong views about their favorites. What exactly makes a Western? Do we need heroes, villains and an uplifting moral lesson about good and evil? Are guns and gunfights (or at the very least, fist fights) required? Cattle drives? Hostile Indians? Gorgeous, majestic western scenery? I agree that Treasure of Sierra Madre is not really a Western, but Unforgiven and McCabe strike me as very great ones. But where is the uplifting moral lesson in those films? It’s a mystery.
I'd swap out The Furies for Blood on the Moon. And Waynes first starring role was in The Big Trail. Which isn't bad even though it bombed at the box office.
Yes, I'm sure you know what happened. One of the first color movies. But limited release as theaters coudn't show, as lack of proper equipment.
Red river.
A great list, with great films. But although Treasure of the Sierra Madre is one of my favorite films of any genre, I don't consider it a Western. I would substitute Fort Apache.
Fair enough!
Great list of movies. Personally I would remove 'The Furies' and replace it with 1951's 'Rawhide', directed by Henry Hathaway and starring Tyrone Powers, Susan Hayward and Jack Elam. To me it is Elam's best performance as a villain.
Good call
2 more for an expanding list FORT APACHE & RIO GRANDE both John Wayne/John Ford classics..
Not black and white but 2 of my favorites
@@stuartscheinson6654 Oh Yes they are in black & white , they make up John Ford`s cavalry trilogy along with SHE WORE A YELLOW RIBBON which was the only one of the three to be filmed in colour , that is why i never included it ..
My favorite is Unforgiven by Clint Eastwood
But not Black and White, so didn't make this video. Take a look at my Clint Eastwood videos in my channel.
What about Shane starring Alan Ladd
shane the best western forever
sadly its a color film
You forgot one of the best B&W westerns of all time!
The Fastest Gun Alive 1956 Glenn Ford!
Noted for next video :)
Any exbert know the western in B&W where it starts out with a person walking outside with shaving cream on his face for a draw?
Although The Treasure of the Sierra Madre is an excellent movie, and one of my personal favorites, I would remove it from the list since it take place after the west was closed (1900-1910). It would be replaced by Fort Apache (1948) with Henry Fonda, John Wayne and Shirley Temple.
Thanks for the advice
I've seen every one. You should have included "Grapes of Wrath" as it's the last Western. The Joads came west in a covered wagon and now have to leave, but in a truck.
Noted. Thanks
My Darling Clementine and Gunfight at the OK corral
OK Corral is in colour
Liberty Valance Fort Apache Red River My Darling Clementine Rio Grde
Red River a great one, though I never liked Montgomery Clift in his role. No matter, Duke Wayne dominates every scene he's in. I'd drop the Furies and add The Wagonmaster, a John Ford film with Ben Johnson in the lead.
Noted. Appreciate feedback
Would have been better if included My Darling Clementine n Jessi James(Tyron Power n Henry Fonda)😢
Yes, need a longer list, jot that down
@@famouspeople63 if you include spaghetti western movies then it will have title of 20 B/W movies of all time!
Very good list because it is hard to narrow down to the Top 10 Best B&W Western movies. One film I would have included is "Rio Grande" which for me is the best of
John Ford's 'Cavalry Trilogy.'
A good choice
Surprised that "Shane" didn't make the cut.
Joco Hobo great film but filmed in Technicolor not B/W ..
@@brianjones7907 My bad, I thought it was B/W.
LVC
Music unnecessary and distracting
saddle the wind, cimmaron kid
ゲーリー・クーパー
Good list, not in the right order. Liberty Valence is the best hands down and Treasure of Sierra Madre isn't really a western
They aren't rated in order
This list sucks the man who shot liberty balance should be number one!!!!
:) noted. We all have our favourites.
I will say it again until you get it right, no such thing as the greatest top 10 movies in any field. Including the best black and white in any field Including westerners. You missed way too many outstanding westerners.
Yes my job isn't done will continue to make more vids. Agree a top of anything is subjective. Viewers on RUclips like them however.
@@famouspeople63 the issue is about your count of only 10 . Saying the best 10 is totally silly without merit. I can see perhaps 50 but 10 , even you know is pointless.
High Noon was such an overrated western and a long snooze.
In my opinion 'HIGH NOON' was the worst piece of crap ever released. While Cooper and Kelly's acting was superb, other than that, it fails miserably. Shot on the Back Lot and low-budget. Then there is the plot. Really? A whole town of cowards who won't help the Sheriff. Where did that ever happen? Eight or ten men with Greeners and Winchesters would have met the train and ended the whole problem. But no, Cooper is going to shoot-it-out all on his own. So what does he do? Go out with two shotguns and have more rilfes and shotguns sttasched for use (they were in the rack in his office)? Nooooo..... he sticks an extra Colt in his belt to go out and face down a gang.
Your entitled to your opinion Jim, even if you're wrong!
