Just so people know, the gear closer to the rear of the camera is for the first curtain. The one closer to the lens mount is the second curtain. Turning them counterclockwise increases the tension and vice versa.
Thank you very much! And this video is helpful too. I have a Canon FP that had shutter issues at 1/125 and up (they just didn't move properly). I fixed it with this video and your comment in particular, thanks a lot! The gear closer to the rear was so loose. Is it normal for it to bounce back at some point when rotated counterclockwise?
I had some weird issues with 500 and 1000 on my FTb, along with some shutter bounce issues, I followed your other video on that and replaced the brake with glue, then 500 and 1000 shutter speeds were oddly exposing, so I tried to increase tension like in this video and seen the problem get worse, so I gently took more tension off until even exposure was observed. got a test roll in which I will run through this next few days and report back if issue was fixed, thank you in advance, Mike
i been looking for this for the past 3 days, i own a new canon FT QL and maybe because it has never been used, i bough films and started shooting and realize that i had to click the shutter bottom twite for it to close, so when i was loading it to take the shot the black widown also rolled in, so it was basacally like taking long esposure no matter on what shutter speeed it was. i iwll try to fix it myself looking at this video
If your description of the problem is indicating that the mirror is not dropping down, it is a possibility that the second shutter curtain is not completing its travel and therefore not tripping the mirror release. If this turns out to be the case than slightly increasing the tension on the second shutter curtain as shown it this video might help.
I hope you see this 4 years later... my Canon TX ratchet center screw was stripped. I can't find a screwdriver that will fit in such a way to avoid the dented parts. How can I get that screw out? Pliers and alcohol have not been able to undo this screw. I've tried everything. I'm assuming it was stripped when trying to fix the screen (it's too slow and doesn't hit the mirror release after the shutter button is pressed). That screw is REALLY glued on there apparently.
Try applying heat from the tip of a soldering iron. Of course be aware of all plastic parts, obviously a hot soldering iron will do quick damage to the plastic. Depending on the soldering iron it may take several minutes.
Thank you for your videos! I have an FTb QL that fires only fast (probably at 1/1000) regardless of the shutterspeed I choose. B works ok. Is this the solution to my problem? Thank you?
There are solutions, but they are much involved, unless somehow the shutter speed dial has lost connection to speed linkage control. A shutter dial issue would be simpler to repair than shutter speed mechanism issues.
Hey, it’s a long shot asking considering this was posted 5 years ago. But my Ftb Ql is working fine until 1/60th and a second and after that, the shutter speed are super long, way over 30 seconds even for 1/30th of a second. What gear needs tensioning?
I recently got this camera and found out that the aperture needle in the light meter does not move when adjusting the aperture ring on the lens, how can I address this issue? Can you make a video about it?
@@FixOldCameras I thought of this being a problem but I quickly realized it wasn't the issue because the straight needle does indeed move when exposed to different levels of light, but the circle-shaped needle I believe is controlled mechanically by the aperture mechanism, on my camera is just stuck at the lowest position all the time. Any ideas of why this can be?
Hello! I will be very grateful if you help me determine what the problem is on my FTB canon: dark stripes - sometimes even half of the frame is dark, randomly - some shots from the entire film are good - half - with dark stripes. what could be the problem? hope you will answer me
Hello, thanks for the video! When I shoot my FTb at 1/1000 of a second, the right half of my photo appears black. Which tensioning ratchet do I need to adjust? Do I need to increase tension or diminish it? (I'm guessing I need to diminish the tension of one of the ratches, but I don't know which one).
Slight adjustments working with both curtains if needed. Fire the camera on bulb first to see if you can discern in sluggishness in the curtain travel times. Typically you will need to slightly increase the curtain tension on the first curtain.
Thank you so much, I have just fixed my Canon FT QL after watching your video. My came is back to life thanks to you!
servicing an Ftb as a favor for my friends dad and this has been very helpful lol

Thanks for making this videos. Just so people to know, in my FTB's, the screw is left handed, so have to be loosen in a clockwise direction.
Tahnks!
After adjustment, the wrench becomes very tight, and I should
What should I do?

Hi,
I have Canon TX for which mirror does not return after shot. Do you have any idea of reason of this issue ?
What is the size of the screwdriver needed for those screws? I have never seem them. Thank you.
bottom cover screws -2.5mm or #0 JIS crosspoint screwdriver... for the adjustment .055mm slot screwdriver

Scratch that, after 1/60th it just doesn’t fire

Check for battery power, clean battery contacts, good battery wire, CDS cell and galvanometer function.

Hi i have a ftb ql and the shutter is squeaking and its not the miror , have you got a solution for this ?👍🏻
The noise is probably coming from the shutter gear sequence.
Does counterclockwise rotation on the shutter tension gears increase tension?
+sewing1243 Counterclockwise rotation increases tension.

How do you know which ratchet is for which curtain ?
@@GattaoraStudios Hi, I'd like to know that as well. In my FTB, at slower speeds the rear curtain stays open much longer than it should
@@GattaoraStudios The gear closer to the rear of the camera is for the first curtain.
