      @@casualuser5527they have high margins on smartphones and smartphones have a shorter life-cycle than these sort of wearable accessories, typically. People will happily put up with a slowed-down smartwatch, but they break and replace phones more frequently. And if you have a galaxy ring, you're way more likely to buy a new Samsung phone, since you're locked into the ecosystem by that point. Recurring revenue even without an explicit subscription.

    • @JanVerny
      @JanVerny Месяц назад +6

      On the other hand (see what I did there) you need to have a Samsung phone. Which I currently do, but I don't want to lock myself in for a future purchae, so after I thought it over for a long while, I'm now trying the sizing kit for the Ultrahuman Ring.

    I think Mistral's monetisation plan is very fair and reasonable, it's not really foss but closer to RHEL in that you need a commercial license, while individual and research users get access to everything they'd ever need, plus they seem to be positioned as the French/European champion for AI, so they can count on some government backing. I think Meta meanwhile is trying to burn as much money as possible and position themselves as the 2nd place player behind open AI, use permissive licensing to spread as fast as possible while creating a community of enthusiasts, researchers and tinkerers, but I think they'll do a rug pull like open AI eventually (the "open" originally meant open source), certainly won't trust them unless they come up with a roadmap for making it financially sustainable.
