    First - Population of Warsaw:
    1939 - 1,300,000
    1945 - 0,420,000
Destruction - 70% of buildings to bare ground.
    (including 90% of monuments)
Warsaw suffered the highest percentage of losses during World War II
    among all European cities.
Secondly -The Allies refused to support Warsaw even with Polish troops in their ranks.
Including forces trained for this purpose.
The Red Army, which was theoretically part of the Allies during this period of the war. Waited on the other side of the river until the uprising fell, and then until the forces of the Reich finished demolishing the city and retreated.

Yes, they say Sabaton is a great history teacher :-) I love them!
Thank you for your honest reaction. Your emotions show you love the music, the rythm, and at the same time you listen to the lyrics about this sad time in Warsaw. You care about women and children. They all participated in the fight. Women took care about the wounded and the food. Children were mostly of The Grey Ranks /scouts/ who delivered messages and also helped with wounded. There is the symbol statue in Warsaw: Mały Powstaniec (the Little Insurrectionist). 1st Aug - 3rd Oct 1944 = 63 days ...
Now, please, watch the official video Uprising, famous actors and a general play there :-)

    Lyrics:
    Warsaw rise
Do you remember when, when the Nazis forced their rule on Poland
1939 and the allies turned away
From the underground rose a hope of freedom as a whisper
City in despair, but they never lost their faith
    Women, men and children fight
They were dying side by side
And the blood they shed upon the streets
    Was a sacrifice willingly paid
    Warsaw city at war
Voices from underground, whispers of freedom
    1944 help that never came
    Calling Warsaw city at war
Voices from underground, whispers of freedom
Rise up and hear the call
History calling to you, 'Warszawo, walcz!'
    Spirit soul and heart
In accordance with the old traditions
1944 still the allies turn away
    Fighting street to street
In a time of hope and desperation
Did it on their own and they never lost their faith
    Women, men and children fight
They were dying side by side
And the blood they shed upon the streets
    Was a sacrifice willingly paid
    Warsaw city at war
Voices from underground, whispers of freedom
    1944 help that never came
    Calling Warsaw city at war
Voices from underground, whispers of freedom
Rise up and hear the call
History calling to you, 'Warszawo, walcz!'
All the streetlights in the city
    Broken many years ago
Break the curfew, hide in sewers
Warsaw, it's time to rise now
All the streetlights in the city
    Broken many years ago
Break the curfew, hide in sewers
Warsaw, it's time to rise now
    Warsaw city at war
Voices from underground, whispers of freedom
    1944 help that never came
    Calling Warsaw city at war

This song is about the Warsaw Uprising of 1944. Nowadays, in Warsaw, on that day (1st of August) at 5 o'clock (that's when the uprising started) everyone in the city stops for 1 minute. All traffic stops and sirens wail across the city. People get out of their cars in the middle of the street, and pedestrians freeze in the middle of walking to give tribute to the fallen heroes. It's really incredible. There are videos showing this commemoration that we do. Check them out.

The biggest disappointment was the USSR, they stood on the outskirts of Warsaw and they waited for everyone to die . At first , the alliance dropped supplies, weapons , etc., but later it was decided that Poland was too far, even though the USA air force was also in the USSR, but they were banned from flying by Russia. Unfortunately, a large part of the supplies ended up in German hands. Sabaton also made a history video, also there is Polish movie called Warsaw44.

The song is about the Warsaw uprising in 1944, started august 1st at 5 pm, called the hour W. They have been able to keep some parts of the city for 63 days with no help from the allies, just with the scarse weapons they had. The Russians were on the other side of the Vistula river just watching and waiting the right moment to enter and take the city. They were shooting to the poles (civilians) that were trying to escape through the river. That was such a memorable episode in our history that every year, to commemorate it, at 5 pm of august the 1st there is a loud siren in Warsaw that starts a minute of silense, everyone stop what he's doing, even the cars and the public transport stop. We really remember what happened in those 63 glorious days.
P.S. Warszawo walcz means literally Warsaw fight! And yes, there were men, women and children fighting on the streets. Side by side. And if you want to learn more about the Warsaw uprising there is a very well documented and well written book by Norman Davies, a British historian, the title is "Rising '44. The Battle for Warsaw"

  • @MayaTheDecemberGirl

It's really great, the band and this song. It would be good if You could make a separate video about the Warsaw Uprising that started on 1st August 1944 and lasted 63 days. There is a lot of original films and documentaries that can be found in Internet about this uprising, for instance on the websites of the Warsaw Uprising Museum. And also You could make a video about the songs that were written and sang by the insurgents. Every year there is traditionally in Warsaw on 1st August a concert of these songs where people come and sing together with the artist. It is really touching.

Speaking of anthem, you should check the very same concert (woodstock 2012) and see how the crowd thanked Sabaton near the end.

    "This is like an anthem"
Currently, this song is one of few unofficial anthems of Warsaw ;)

The crazy part is that someone grandparants or father / Mother (if they are old enough) is the one they are signing about. It wasn't too long ago

And precisely because the Allies did not help the Poles, we learned an important lesson: if you can count, count on yourself. 2. Save yourself, for no savior will appear.

If you want annother awesome live song with Sabaton you should react to en livstid I krig (a life time of war) live Scandinavium Gothenburg.
The album Carolus rex they had released during that time is about a part of Swedish history called the era of great power (stormaktstiden in Swedish)
The album was released with both an Swedish and English version, the difference beung that the Swedish one tells the story from our/a Swedish soldiers view while the English is more from an outside observers.
It is the Swedish version they played during that show so be sure the subtitles are on, I was at that show and all I can say is that you will not regret it.

If you really want to learn more about the Battle of Vienna, I recommend these two films: first is "The Battle of Vienna, 12 Sep, 1683 * Poland saves Europe from Islam * Polska ratuje Europę od Islamu" you can make one film with a reaction to both at the same time because it is actually one whole - the speech of the Polish priest gives additional meaning to this battle, so it cannot be missing and its in second one named "The Polish charge that saved Europe from Muslim c" hope u will do this :)
