      @@Timsvideochannel1 Thanks for that. My reference elsewhere (Graz) to the hippie bus was more a joke than anything - everyone remembers the swish Magic Bus which turned into multinational company and everyone forgets the ones I went on (Athens to Amsterdam in a week) which broke down so often and never when the food shops were open so by the time we got to Frankfurt Main we were all starving to death. Daze of our yoof.

    • @Timsvideochannel1
      @Timsvideochannel1  4 года назад

      I knew such services operated from the UK to Spain, but it had never really occurred to me that they operated so widely. You must had met some interesting people on those journeys. The Hippie busses in New Zealand were a sight for sore eyes often painted to look like houses, they would disappear into a cloud of slow moving black smoke when climbing hills, they were an environmental disaster on wheels driven by original Hippies from the sixties stuck in a time warp of their own making, they were some real characters with a great sense of humour. You travelled through Europe at a very interesting time with the fall of the Iron Curtain and the reunification of Germany. I missed those times, recently I visited the abandoned border posts at Gmünd on the border between Austria and the Czech Republic, complete with a no mans land between then, it is hard to believe that a fence at the end of a garden was somehow part of the Iron Curtain. You must have recorded some amazing moments in history.

      Hi Bill, genuine working narrow gauge freight railways are as rare as hens teeth in Europe these days, once popular they have nearly all fallen victim to road transport. The switches appeared to be hand operated, I did notice our train ran through at least one set for the other road, the switches are designed to allow for that to happen. From what I could make out, train movements were authorised by radio. Take care and stay safe. Tim.

    • @Timsvideochannel1

      Hi, the Swiss line where I believe the maximum speed is 60 km/h (37 mph) is the one you mentioned - Waldenburg Railway. The Rhodope Mountain Railway (Septemvri-Dobrinishte) in Bulgaria is the longest 760mm railway I have ridden on en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Septemvri%E2%80%93Dobrinishte_narrow-gauge_line it's top speed is 50 km/h (31 mph). The other extensive network is in Bosnia where the speeds are low. The Shimla Railway (India) at 2 ft 6 in (762 mm) almost the same gauge has a top speed of 25 mph (40 Km/h) - 760 mm Railways were all about building the lines at an affordable price, speed was not so important.

    Pozdrav i poštovanje!
    Veliki sam, i neizlečiv ljubitelj železnice, još od detinjstva, a trenutno mi je 56 godina! Ovaj video sam sa uživanjem odgledao!
    Pretpostavljam da je širina ovog koloseka 760 mm? Nekad je i po bivšoj Jugoslaviji bilo mnogo pruga uzanog koloseka, i to najčešće baš te širine, 760 mm. Naročito u Srbiji, i Bosni i Hercegovini. No, preko 99% takvih pruga u bivšoj Jugoslaviji je ukinuto, a potom i demontirano. Trase tih nekadašnjih pruga su pretvorene u lokalne puteve, grandiozni mostovi i tuneli i danas stoje kao nemi svedoci davnih vremena. Mostovi, najčešće čelični, u obliku kontinualnih nosača, poprilično korodirali, sa njih je pokradeno sve što je moglo da se uzme, i tako stoje prepušteni zubu vremena! TUGA! Kada sam nekoliko puta video te tužne ostatke bio sam jako tužan!
    Koja li je BUDALA te pruge proglasila nerentabilnim?!?!?!
    Naročito kad sam čuo za čuvenu, i u svetu jedinstvenu Šargansku Osmicu, koja je bila između stanica Mokra Gora i Šargan/Vitasi! A, ta deonica je deo pruge koja je išla od Beograda do Dubrovnika.
    Da sam tada živeo u krajevima kroz koje je prolazila ta pruga, ne verujem da bih preživeo njeno ukidanje! Svisnuo bih od muke! Da zauvek prestane onaj lep zvuk kloparanja točkova, trag dima, i još lepši pištavi zvuk sirene parnih lokomotiva! Odmah bih umro!
    No, hvala Bogu što je nadležnima poslao napad inteligencije, pa je posle 2000.-te godine ponovo izgrađena pruga od Mokre Gore do Šargan/Vitasa, a koju godinu kasnije i od Mokre Gore do Višegrada! No,nažalost, pruga se slabo održava, i prema Višegradu se vidi da su šine već deformisane, da se voz osetno ljulja, pa je zato brzina smanjena na samo 20 km/h. No, i to je bolje, nego da onako stoje tužni ostaci, zbog kojih ovakvom ljubitelju železnice zasuze oči!
    U Austriji i Švajcarskoj, i svim normalnim državama, hvala Bogu, takve pruge ne samo što nisu ukinute, ne samo što su sačuvane, nego su elektrifikovane i modernizovane, i danas su turistička atrakcija! Svaka čast!
    Kao veliki i neizlečivi vozoljubac, prijateljski Vam preporučujem da odete (ako već niste) do Mokre Gore u Srbiji, i provozate se vozom do Šargan/Vitasa i na drugu stranu od Mokre Gore do Višegrada, i naravno snimite lep video! Mokra Gora je zbog te obnovljene železnice postala turistička atrakcija, i dospela je na sve turističke mape sveta!
    Hvala Vam na ovom lepom videu!
    Pozdrav iz Novog Sada u Vojvodini i Srbiji!

    • @Timsvideochannel1
      @Timsvideochannel1  5 лет назад

      Travelling by train is a wonderful way to see the world. People ask me why I travel by train in New Zealand, when it is far cheaper and quicker to fly. My answer is "I am in New Zealand to see New Zealand", this is especially true of the Auckland to Wellington "Northern Explorer". Direct flights from the UK arrive at Auckland, with connecting flights to the rest of the country. An hour to fly onto Christchurch or spend two days travelling on two of the most scenic train rides to be found anywhere in the world along with the jaw dropping ferry ride to Picton. For me there is only one way to do that trip even if time is tight. "Yes" the industrial revolution changed the way we live more than anything else I can think of. I see you have done the Tongariro Crossing, what an incredible experience, there is a reasonably new cliff path along the Kapiti Coast to Paekakariki - it is not the longest of walks, but it is worth it for the views. Have you done it? Take care. Tim.

      @@Timsvideochannel1 Hi Tim - you are sooh right. Also, train travel is way more elegant and relaxing. IMHO The Mt Ruapehu Crater Climb eclipses the fabulous Tongariro Crossing, and that's saying something. We have done several Kapiti coast walks - boy do you get around!!! Ciao, Diane

      My son used to live at Plimmerton, so I became familiar with the Kapiti Coast, although I never made it over to the Kapiti Island nature reserve. The view from the Paekakariki Hill Road is awesome.
      I love to see the world, when my kids finally consign me to an old peoples home, I don't want to sit there wishing I'd done things, much better to have amazing memories, how I wish I was your age again, it is wonderful to see you making the most of being young. Take care. Tim.
