    This is great! Old modelers trick with the boiling water. Hot steam works too. I've done thin balsa strips bend with hot steam, and you don't have to wait that long for them to stay in shape.
    More DnD builds please. And more wood builds. I love wood builds my self :-)

    • @ScratchBashing
      @ScratchBashing  4 года назад +5

      Thanks! I hadn't heard of any trick before trying this, it just seemed like it may work (and it did). More DnD builds are coming!

      Real ship builders use steam to bend the frames and planks too for hundreds of years. When I built my boat I didn't have a fancy set up so we wrapped the members in plastic ground tarp and shot it with a clothes steam ironer 😂

    what a cool build, those old weathered planks turned out perfect. and i gotta say, i love builds that use only a single material type, emphasizes you don't need crazy materials to make cool things, looking forward to more builds from you :D

    I find that dragging a wire brush across the wood gives that nice woody grain texture, and a lot faster then the dermal

    • @ScratchBashing

    It might not be a perfect ship, but it is ship shaped (sorry, bad pun) enough to work just fine. Also, it's inspiring to see that we can build stuff like this. It looks pretty great!

    The way you built the mast (including the Spackle) could, with minor modifications, be used to make a rotting hollowed-out log in a wide range of diameters. Though, it might be easier to form that around a pill bottle.

    • @icantthinkofanything798
      @icantthinkofanything798 3 года назад

      Good to know! Better to keep that wood texture. Although if you want to get rid of those slats without covering it in modeling paste maybe a hollowed out dowel would work better

    Sry, late reply... Think you were reaching for the word keel. Also great way to model a boat. Same technique is great for 3d modeling too. Or for planes, the fuselage can be thought of as a series of bulkheads, then skinned. Bests~

  • @petsan97

    May not be how one makes a good ship, but it is a ship and it would float. Wouldn't steer well, but I guess that's why it's a wreck now. *Deep Lore*

    • @dezallen2922
      @dezallen2922 3 года назад

      I think the overlapping planks are fine. It's known as "clinker construction" , very old technique that Vikings used.

      hello past me, forgot you were here. status on the boat. finished it but decided to go a different way. put a rear on it and made it into an airship. used wire to hold up a oval sphere made of more wire and tissue paper dampened with pva+water. it's not much, but I think it's cool.
