I'm an indie developer and I've watched hours of videos and read about 50 different articles on marketing and promotion for apps and games. But this has single-handedly been the best resource for marketing I've yet to see. Thank you!
P.S This girl has a beautiful speaking voice.

Great Talk Emmy ! Allthough, Hint for other people: Play the video at 1.5x the original speed, she talks pretty slowly - you can shrink down your time investement and still understand everything she says at 1.5x the speed she talks.

This is the most helpful comment on here, 1.25x speed was perfect for me :)

Newtype Emmy's speech speed is very appropriate for me because English is not my native language.

Yeah, I'm so glad they added that feature. I often find myself on 1.5x speed through a lot of the videos I watch, especially long talks like this.

I've been doing indie marketing and have covered indie games for a long time, and while there are many awesome tips in here I would just like to point out that even getting a single write-up on a news site (much less an interview or review) is sometimes a very daunting task. I write about games as well and while I certainly give almost any game a chance, the most major sites treat indies as, well, indies.
And if you're game is even more unusual (like an indie MMORPG or browser-based RPG) then you can kiss any major coverage goodbye.
So, yes, press helps...if you can get it. I work/ed for major gaming sites and I cannot tell you how many times I have to be the one to cover some tiny game because literally no other writer will touch it.
    Great vid and chat though!

These are some really great tips for indie devs. It's very easy for us to get tunnel vision and focus only on making our games. I think it's important for us to get feedback from the community because that will not only engage the fans, but will end up improving the game for everyone.

This is so awesome, now that I paid attention to what you said I noticed that people in other fields even use some of these concepts...Especially the art field on the internet with digital art and comics...So even if I don't make a great game at first and get trolled when I try thanks so much for the wonderful marketing advice on how to put everything together to try to market products, especially online.

Very very good presentation. I am trying to learn how to make games now, but I never thought about marketing and how to make people know about my game. I thought that if the game was awesome everybody wold know about it. I was so wrong. Great speech. Very clarifying.

Tough, but fair advice. I guess as a game dev, most of us got into indie game dev to make great games - not to deal with marketing. But as one needs to do so many different things to make an indie game, you really got no choice but to do marketing as well..im slowly trying to come around to this fact myself...

To me this seems like business 101 common sense. Product awareness is literally the first part of business college.. the very first part. If you actually cared about the game you were making you'd bring this into consideration, if marketing hasn't strafed you once, you're a goblin.

After listening to this I think this entire promotion is actually a marketing for iOS and Apple app store. It's made to push iOS as a development platform for indie developers. That's what's usually done when one company, in this case Apple, wants to rise the number of sales of their devices. Pushing something hidden withing a bunch of useless information is the standard deception strategy marketeers were trained to do. Doesn't work on me though, I see through all the deception. I'm having Asperger's autism, with a hint of something else, not yet discovered.

    Hi!
If you don't mind, I would suggest to stop reading word by word all your slides (before, while or after showing them). People know how to read, and if you say what's written, but differently, your speech has far more impact on the audience. It has actually twice the impact, and gets far more enjoyable.

The stupid thing is, not much of this is unobvious, it's just stuff that a lot of game devs simply don't do.
I can't tell you the number of devs I see, who don't even link to their project in their twitter profile, etc.

You know why 95% of all indie games are a flop??? Not because of marketing.. BECAUSE THEY ARE SHIT!!!!! GAMES!!!! I have watched HUNDREDS!!!! of these panels.. and every single time, I look up the games these panel members have made.. and 9/10 its either a REALLY bad copy of something else.. or its just simply a SHIT GAME!!! To this day, I have not come across a GOOD GAME that went unnoticed for AGES and AGES!!! If your game is good enough, it will be picked up eventually.. Look at THE BINDING OF ISSAC.. All Edmund did was stick it on STEAM.. THATS IT!!! and WAITED!!! 2 months.. SHIT DOWNLOAD,, then the UTUBE crowd got hold of it.. and BAM!!!! Im not saying you dont need marketing.. Im saying.. the stats of 95% of games failing is not DOWN to bad marketing.. i would say.. 90% are because they suck ass neways.. and 5% just havent been discovered yet.. PLEASE!! SOMEONE!!! Tell me a GOOD!! game that has gone unnoticed and done financially BADLY!! Im still looking!!

    • @sheepthehack

thetruth Ok, just checked it out, here are a few thoughts.. 1.. people like to feel the movement system they use does not hinder the overall gameplay, the movement in this game seemed a little stiff, I would have added some incredibly basic physics.. such as momentum.. so the swing wasnt so much of a stiff STOP!! and more of a fluid movement.. but over all.. good game.. (if not stolen) the mechanics were very well thought out.. Im not a huge fan of casual gaming.. and to be honest, when I said a good game will always find its way to the public, I meant PC etc.. not mobile.. MOBILE has its own set of problems.. i.e everyone and their grandmother are making games for phones.. but ill stick with my original statement.. and this game in my opinion.. SHOULD be recognised.. I did notice a few youtube channels with it on, so its not going completely hidden.. if that was your point?? If this game has not done well, then i would be very surprised.. considering its very funny to start off.. and the pixel art is incredibly well done.. so.. let me more about this game pls..

Lets talk about one of the stupid things she says. Talking to your community is good, and making them feel included is good but taking their ideas into consideration and actually using their ideas are 2 different things. DO NOT let your community decide to shape your game. This is how shit games get made. You can't please everyone and listening to someone who wants a gun that shoots bats, while another wants the character to run a billion miles an hour in a tactical rpg game, is how you turn yourself into a failure. The game is your vision and people will buy into your vision if you are consistent with that vision. People don't buy triple A titles because they are community created, they buy them because the developers have stuck to a narrative and created a certain game that appeals to them. Call of duty will always be call of duty regardless of if some players like it or not. But i guarantee that even if they don't like some things about the game, they will still play it because the majority of it appeals to them or their friends play it. Players like developers that have consistency.

    • @AMVaddictionist
      @AMVaddictionist 7 лет назад +1

Triple A titles don't need to do this because they don't have to market on a $0 Budget and she said that incorporating the ideas of your fan base is a big win, not to let them make the game for you. This is a lecture on marketing, and having your followers engage with your development is great and free marketing.
