My reason for making games is that I want to make games that I want to play. Right now, I'm figuring out 3d graphics because I don't have enough money to buy Devil Daggers, but I still want to play it, so I'm making my own personal Devil Daggers. What then, should I do if play testers respond negatively to what you consider to be the most fun part of the game?
If you're still searching for answers, first step is to acknowledge it, and let them know they're being heard. Then ask what they don't like and why, so you'll have to think about it. If you've reached the conclusion that it's because of taste, you can ignore it. If they aren't engaged with it, it could be stuff like it doesn't feel juicy and fun yet (a shooter with no sound isn't fun, or no effects when shooting the gun or hitting an enemy), so you need to put in more effort towards stuff like that. If players aren't made aware of systems within you're game, find ways to inform them; if you have a combo system, show it and make it juicy. Currently I'm still trying to make games now after listening to many talks, but Vlambeer and Grapefrkt talks about juice make you realise when you make a tiny portion of your game (just the actions players make), make that the most sensual and exciting part. If you're making a shooter with 3 enemies in an arena: make the guns loud, drop bullet shells, and have noticeable muzzle flash; show enemies staggering in response, splatter with blood, and make stains on the floor; make the player's movement noticeable with footsteps, head bob, sounds when jumping, crouching, sliding and sprinting. Whatever you can do in the game, make that sound and feel better.
Holy hell, I remember Muffin Knight! It sucks that they probably got away with it, too, since they stopped working on Muffin Knight in 2014, at least to my knowledge.
1:07:00 He had to delve into identitarianism. Don't handicap yourself over superficial guilt. I'm really narked off that their fishing game (which I own and I loved playing) got cloned. In fact I wonder if I bought the clone version. Did they ever recoup their money legally ? I think Polygon did an article about it, I'm going to dig it out.
The whole talk about game maker and going where the game takes you and not making the game in your head because computers dont work like that... it all means to me that they develop games lazily, meaning they stop when something is hard, when theres a technical limitation they work it into the game instead of trying to brake that limitation and go past it. Which may be actually a good way to make games on a low budgetif you manage to make them look like they have some value but i dont think is a rule rule...

Hello. We are a small indie studio currently developing Xenocider, a 3D homage to Space Harrier coming to PC, Dreamcast and 3DS. Assuming you may be interested in new indie games any of these platforms, we thought you might like to check it out, we made a playable demo available to download :) www.kickstarter.com/projects/retrosumus/xenocider-a-3d-shooter-for-pc-mac-linux-dreamcast If you find our project interesting, please consider giving us any kind of shout out. Thank you so much in advance!
I have to disagree a bit, some things are not games no matter how you spin it. For example, a "game" which is eighty percent cut scenes and twenty percent gameplay, you are not really playing but semi interacting with a movie.
I was following him on twitter, but I didn't know why, LOL, "he is popular" I thought. But now I know why. (yet I'm not following him anymore, I'm sure he's not sorry for that).
Pro-Tip: If you want to hire minorities - then go for it. Put your money where your mouth is rather than shaming others into hiring minorities. Be sure to pay them the same too.
Despite there being a few decent pieces of advice, he lost all credibility when he started suggesting the industry was exclusive toward women at around 1hr 5mins. How would a field exclusive toward women have as their most Publicly Recognizable figure for over 20 consecutive years Be a Woman? From her earliest works for the Apple series until long after she was out of the industry, ROBERTA WILLIAMS was the only developer most people in the public could name. If you want to try to explain to people like Bonnie Ross (HALO) and Kim Swift (Portal, Left 4 Dead, etc), and all the other women behind the most popular franchises in games that they aren't supposed to be there, by all means, try - but please record it so we can all laugh along with them as they openly mock your ignorance. Nothing in the game industry is exclusive toward women. No development house rejects women. Some actually Do reject men, but that's for another discussion. The only thing that might keep a woman with dreams of creating games from doing so -- is people as ignorant as this guy who would tell her she can't because it is a "male" field. And that is why I take such issue with his suggestion that it is the case. Not because he's wrong - which he so obviously is, but because of the harm he may do to those listening to him as a 'credible' source if they believe that his nonsensical suggestion is actually found in the industry itself. -- Here's a clue. The game industry doesn't care what's in your pants, who you're sleeping with at home, or what your politics are. They care what skills and ideas you bring to the table and how much profit they can make from both.

This guy is a good talker

Video might be "old" but these ideas, this mindset, is timeless.
I will do my best to make use of this, thank you so much!
Awesome talk. Love Vlambeer. They are probably the biggest reason I am using Game Maker rather than something else right now.
Same, I just started learning to use it
bunnybreaker same
I use Unity might have a look at GameMaker soon
I started with Unity and 1 month ago switched to Godot, freaking love it.
used unity hated it then bought gamemaker and I am way more happier with it

Wow Rami. Thanks for one of the best presentations I've seen on the topic. Amazing.
Words cannot describe how kick ass this talk was.
(What? ... I know these are words)
This is the best game design speech I've ever heard.
when Rami talks, he makes me feel like I could conquer the world and that everything will be ok
These devs are 2 of the greatest people to live, they really have passion and are so creative about their games. proud to play their masterpieces!
Yeah same question
He who has a why to live for can bear almost any how. ~ Friedrich Nietzsche
I thought that quote was attributed to Victor E Frankl

Big motivational boost.
Awesome man!
Love their games so much. Excellent developer.
yay ive been looking for this video (went missing) thank you
Fucking legend. I was lucky to be in this year's gamelab, where he made another talk
Tip: 1.5 speed, if you dont have time. Very good talk, just too slow for a very busy schedule.
This was the reason I went to egx 2018.
much respect to this guy.
Awesome video. Really like this kind of thing.
Would love to see more. Keep it up.
The "Give more than you take" advice it awesome. However I do feel I am not experienced enough to "give".
vlambeer talks are always good talk
The person that negotiated with him is watching this, and he's pissed.
Very nice to hear this! I've been an Independent Game Developer for a few years.
Backstory finishes at 19:05
Thanks man !
the game really talks to you you might want it to turn out one way but it will become it's own beast and you have to support that beast
This is an amazing goldmine!

Super Crate Box got cloned with Muffin Knight and Ridiculous Fishing got cloned with Ninja Fishing.
I feel sorry for these guys.
Some ios game cloned luftrausers as well
But how did these games get cloned? Did they put so much info out long before release?
Holy hell, I remember Muffin Knight! It sucks that they probably got away with it, too, since they stopped working on Muffin Knight in 2014, at least to my knowledge.
this video unlocks legendary items. i feel OP.
48:54 what books is he talking about?
Was that lucas is the front row?
The best talk ever!
Who the heck disliked this goldmine?
Maybe people who tend to miss the like button?
Yeah, but I won't miss the like button to your comments guys.
JW i guess
what the heck CocaCola doing in a game talk. Yeah some things just don't make sense :)
Some guy who doesn't have the brains to see gold and differentiate it from the yellow stuff.
Being from South Africa. I can say that although we do have a big smart phone market. Gaming has been big here since the late 80s
where did you get that T?

The jump on the "Y" button game is Skyrim.
I love it how he says "You"
One of the best I ever see. :D
Fabulous, funny and informative
great talk, thank you!
how did the other company get radical fishing to sell? they made it from scratch?
Yes, I assume so. But it seems they were riding off the back of the success of Vlambeer's original game.

great speech.
at 1:09:08 I have heard this "riddle" so many times in my life that IMMEDIATELY I knew where he was going with it.
Thanks for this!
just a small loan of a million dollars
+G Maeruf relative to the amount of money the person has it can be called small :P
Did he go into computer science?
When? He got orders for games since he was 14.

This is why I will NEVER be a great game developer...I didn't drop out of college. In fact I'm days away from finishing. :|
this is your last chance, drop out now :)
Nah, I payed too much for it to drop out now :D
BenJoe72 then I'm sorry to break it to you Ben, but you're never gonna be a overnight success billionaire with that attitude :P
