- [Here's a quick refresh for one we did a little while ago.]
In the 2004 season finale, one team was playing for pride, the other for a playoff birth. You wouldn't be faulted for getting them confused while watching this game. The Redskins smothering defense was (for once) paired with fairly efficient offense, while the Vikings stumbled through most of this one getting nipped by untimely penalties and rundown by the Redskins punishing rushing attack. Patrick Ramsey appeared to be firming up his status as the starting QB of the future (nope) while Ladell Betts made the most of a rare start (Clinton Portis out injured) and Sean Taylor (sigh...) dished out the hurt on defense. A cosmetic last-second Vikings TD made the score look close, but this day belonged to Joe Gibbs' Redskins from start to finish, as Gibbs improved to 8-0 against Minnesota in the first-ever meeting between these teams at FedEx Field.
In the end, it was a happy ending for everyone. Despite the loss, the Vikes did manage to back into the playoffs and, despite losing 7 of their previous 10 games and 20 of their prior 22 contests outside, Minnesota staged an upset win over Green Bay at Lambeau Field in the wild card round the following week.
HQ captured from a beautiful DVR (remember those?) to VHS (and those?) recording (remastered anew) with Bill Maas and Sam Rosen on the call from a chilly FedEx Field.
I was working at RadioShack at the time this game was playing. I remember watching the display TV's to get an update on the score. Now I feel really old. lol
Sean Taylor was a beast
I sometimes wonder if Gibbs had played a healthy Ramsey over a hobbled Brunell in the 2005 Divisional against Seattle if they’d have made it to the Conference Championship
Nate Burleson during his time at GMFB told a story about Sean Taylor in this game. Burleson said that when he saw Taylor coming at him, that was one of the few times he made a pure business decision and tried to get out of bounds as quickly as he could. And he said that Taylor was shit-talking him afterwards.
23:40 looks like it may be that play.
I can’t even remember how it felt to have a good defense…great Washington defense in this era
If the offense was just average this might have been a playoff team. Perhaps a very competitive playoff team. Imaging how good this defense would have been if they weren’t on the field the whole game!
I see James Thrash in a thumbnail I click
I was at this game! These were the days when ESPN had a segment called. “Jacked Up”.
I remember a Vikings player took a hard hit. I yelled “ HE GOT JACKED UP” everyone around me started laughing. Then I found out it was a player from my area.Ronyel Whitaker nephew of Boxing Great Sweetpea Whitaker.
I was a local Sports Anchor who covered Ronyel when he played HS Football My mood went from being comical to ooooh noooo😢
Redskins forever
Ladell betts was that dude
I remember this game because the team wore burgundy socks with their white jerseys/burgundy pants. A break from their traditional look.
