So many hits from those guys.... if l had to choose, i'd go "Come sail away" Also, they did a live concert with a students symphonie orchestra, Lots of good tracks on that one too!
Hmm, why does that student thing sound familiar..I bet I watched a song from that on RUclips, unless another huge artist did the same thing with a school... Thanks Novy!
You've got to do " Prelude 12/Suite Madame Blue " from them, their best, IMHO, their most theatrical and proggiest work A few more suggestions: Crystal Ball Man In The Wilderness Half-Penny, Two Penny/AD 1958 The albums " Equinox ", " Crystal Ball ", " The Grand Illusion ", " Pieces Of Eight " and " Paradise Theater " are masterpieces, and the album " Cornerstone "(where " Boat On The River " is from) is pretty good. Styx rarely missed from 1975-1981
Love your approach and style. I humbly suggest "Queen of Spades" from Pieces of Eight (same album that contains "Renegade "). It's one of their best songs IMO. Cheers!
Two great tracks, superb vocals from Tommy & as usual stunning vocal harmonies. They really had their own formula, hard rock with prog, folk & musical theatre themes. A few more favourites are: Foolin' yourself, The Grand Illusion, The great white hope, Blue collar man, A.D.1928/Rockin' the Paradise, The best of times & Show me the way, cheers
For some reason I always thought that was Tommy Shaw on lead guitar on 'Renegade'. Learned something new today. This is definitely an all-time classic of theirs. Check out "Too Much Time on My Hands" by them, and the epic "Suite Madame Blue" will blow you away.
I guess the song writer usually played lead, but in this case they made a deal and swapped lead guitar roles... thanks for watching and for the suggestions 😊
Hey, flubbert. I know you are a Chicago guy like me(well suburbs for me) but wondering if you ever saw Styx in the early years when they played all over locally. I saw them in I believe it was 1973 at ECC (Elgin Community College). Also playing same show was another area band called Heartsfiled. They were more a country- rock sound but good and had one song that got radio play locally called “Music Eyes”. They never made it as big as Styx but I understand they are still playing together.
@@bradsense7431 I never did see them back then but I had a lot of friends who did. They played all over... clubs, colleges, bar mitzvahs 😏. Pretty sure I knew a guy who said they played at his high school. Don't recall Heartsfield off the top of my head.
I only knew their big radio hits….Boat on the River is new to me. What a pleasant surprise! And even more respect for Tommy Shaw. Holy Cow! (I can do without the tuba, though…🙄). Think it’s a concertina, not an accordion….but I could be wrong.
Oh, nice you could discover that one with me! I think the music video shows all the instruments used (minus the autoharp) ruclips.net/video/K9Qs8-BkiLw/видео.html
I you like boat on the river, you should check out Tommy singing "I can't find my way home" . It just highlights his voice when he's singing softer and creates a longing kind of emotion.
STYX has been my favorite band since 1977. As you've seen they have a wide variety of styles in their songs. For more Tommy songs, I'll suggest: "Man In The Wilderness", "Crystal Ball", "Fooling Yourself", and "Blue Collar Man". Note that there's an extended version of "Man In The Wilderness" ( ruclips.net/video/biKrDFBp0ns/видео.html ). For some Dennis songs: "CASTLE WALLS", "Queen Of Spades", "Prelude 12/Suite: Madame Blue", "Lady", "Pieces Of Eight", and "Claire De Lune/Ballerina". For some James "JY" Young songs: "Snowblind", "Miss America", "Young Man", and "Man Of Miracles". I consider "Babe" and "Boat On The River" as outliers of their usual but good, and so is "A Day" which is a jazz-rock fusion song by John Curulewski (original member before Tommy).
There’s a live show that is sometimes on AXSTV, where they played “Grand Illusion” and “Pieces of Eight” albums straight through, and it’s fantastic if you ever get the chance to see it. It did feature Dennis deYoungs replacement - no one can replace Dennis but he did a pretty good job.
@@retroreactions.... - I watch him on RUclips and he’s still very active. I’m not sure what caused the split/rift in the first place, but I heard that he had a psychological thing about being in public eye and he wouldn’t even leave the house. I’ll have to look into that and see what the story really was. I also heard that he was a bit anal too in the early days; he would go into record stores and put the Styx albums in front! Can’t say I blame him though.
Being a Chicago area guy I have know Styx’s music for a long time. Even saw them in the early days about 1973 at a local community college. And while I do like some of their songs just never was a big fan as some of my friends were. Now as for accordion playing in rock music Little Feat has used on at least three songs that come to mind. Six Feet of Snow, Cajun Girl and Hangin’ on to the Good Times.
For a thematically similar song by Styx, I'd suggest Unfinished Song -Dennis DeYoung Fooling Yourself(Angry Young) -Tommy Shaw Other great Styx tracks are Prelude 12/Suite Madam Blue -Dennis Deyoung Miss America -James (JY) Young
Nice pick today buddy! I was big on the Styx bandwagon years ago. I've probably seen them 6-7 times, all in the 70s and 80s. They were big around here when I was young, since they're local Chicago boys. Tommy Shaw didn't come on board until the Crystal Ball album in 1976. Great in concert, having Dennis, James and Tommy all as lead vocals.John and Chuck Panozzo were twins in the band, drums and bass respectively, but unfortunately John passed away in 1996 from cirrhosis of the liver. Chuck still plays limited performances with Styx, as he was diagnosed with HIV back in 1991. The current line-up still include James Young, Tommy Shaw, Chuck Panozzo, now with Ricky Phillips splitting bass duties with Chuck. Todd Sucherman on drums, and Lawrence Gowan on keyboards and lead vocals.I saw others suggest it, as I also highly recommend the track "Suite Madame Blue" from the 1975 album Equinox. Another suggestion is from their second album "Styx II". You need to hear these both together, "Little Fugue In "G"" and "Father O.S.A." Dennis played Little Fugue In "G"on the pipe organ at St. James Cathedral in Chicago. You realize now with Styx, you've opened up yet another can of worms! LOL
They have a live more recent vid out and do “grand illusion”, an awesome song. It’s a wonder they made it out of the 70s they partied hard. Also maybe not reaction worthy but a great video with Tommy meeting Darryl Hall at Darryl’s house and they jam hard. Another couple to add to your watch list
@@retroreactions.... Please, please do this song soon. It is such a great song and I have yet to see anyone react to it. Tommy signing and playing the mandolin. I really believe you will appreciate this song.
Brandon, did you ever watch Daryls House? Tommy Shaw😅 was on there years back and they did several Styx songs, including Renegade I believe. Styx never made it into one of my fave bands, but I liked them. Hell…there were dozens of fantastic bands and artists back then…you couldn’t devote your listening time to all of them! No Styx albums or concerts for me, but I Wouldn’t change the channel on them. 😏😁. Tommy had a really fine voice….and great harmonies in the band. They are TIGHT. And that lead guitarist was DEFINITELY influenced by Jimmy Page! Some of his runs are very familiar to me.
Brandon, as a mega fan of DM that you are and a lover of electronic music, my question is... how much do you know about the parents of this musical genre that influenced many bands? It would be great if you do the whole album "The man Machine" by Kraftwerk, it's priceless.
Hi Brandon,Styx is sure not a bad group but did not get really into them, I know few good song that I like, but not enough to become a fan, but I appreciate when I listen them with you
They got me Styxified! Amazing musicians, love Tommy's voice!! Thanks for watching! 🥰

Hi Michael...Thanks for the suggestions....Yes, I see they have quite a number of albums....that's exciting!
Grand illusion is a masterpiece of an alvum
Thanks for watching Kelly!
All of The Grand Illusion. I got to see them on the Pieces Of Eight Tour, another Great Album. Equinox "Suite Madame Blue"
Thanks for watching and for the suggestions michael!
This is my fav band and i'm glad you are getting in to them
Hi Jeff! Thanks so much for watching and being first commenter today! 🥇 Glad you love this band....you have 1 or 2 clear favorites?
@@retroreactions.... Castle Walls and Crystal Ball are my 2 fav but it is a rabbit hole that I think you will love to go down
Thanks for that, I will add them to my list!
"Boat.." is one of the enduring songs through my life. Since I first heard it I have loved it. Tranquility base..trying to find it. Still.

Glad they finally found their way to the channel. The next song you must listen to is Queen Of Spades, great song!
Yes, been wanting them here from the start! So many artists, so little time! Added your sugg to my list! Thanks
