this song clearly is a proof that there was once a time where humans where still feeling pure innocence without having any polluted and perverted thoughts like todays times.
Exactly, but i really don't care that some may read sinister overtones to the lyrics, its still that innocent and beautiful song i remember as a child and nothing can taint the sentiment when i hear it. In fact, the whole album it was taken from was pretty much as good and memorable if totally underrated and overlooked. Whether you sing along or play in the background, takes you way back to better days every time. But the sentiment of the observation - spot on and I totally agree with it.
My mom’s name was Clair. My dad used to play the 45 when he would come home from work. I love those memories. Both my parents passed in 2021, but this song brings back happy memories and tears.

Why do I feel nostalgic for en era I wasn't even around to witness? Having been born in 1980 I gravitated to 60s/70s poprock in my mid teens and its still my favourite music periode!
You gravitate cuz those were fantastic music eras especially the '70s the '60s kicked it off with a roar and a seventies was all about people emotions love and having fun
I had a cat called Clair and this was our favourite song. Unfortunately Clair was killed by a bus. Always brings a tear to my eye when I hear this song.
This is a song written, performed and sung beautifully, playfully and innocently by a singer almost totally forgotten . . at least by me . . The song's about a guy admiring a child, right? It was made in 1972 long, long before all the Bundys, Dahmers and school shootings that have sickened and killed us all inside. Gilbert O'Sullivan brings our hearts back to life and he's awesome. Where has he been?? His music stirs up so many emotions: Sadness, laughter, anguish, admiration and a few I can't even think of. It's an amazing and weird talent; haunting yet enjoyable. I can't stop listening to it. It's the closest thing to literally going back in time to your childhood and reliving the best parts of it all over again. Please Mr O'Sullivan come out of retirement. We need you.
If I could describe this song I would describe it as a bliss of childhood innocence ,mixed with the heart of a breath taking afternoon on the heat of summer, combined with a joy of ice-cream beckoned with chocolate and blessed with a shinning pint of pure gold
Played piano keys guitar all my life. I remember playing this with my band but also in Aberdeen University Union as a student. In a corner of an old dusty room tucked away in the corner sat an out of key piano. You could hear it out near the Janitor's Office. I used to draw a bit of an audience. Memories and happy days. Played Alone Again Naturally as well.
I went to England for the first time when I was 9 years old (I’m an Aussie) I drove my Auntie & Uncle & their 3 children crazy playing this on the record player all the time! My beautiful Auntie Irene just passed away in December 2021 - this song brings many happy memories to me now.. R.I.P Auntie 💔
One of the best songs ever... brings tears to my eyes. It's so sweet and innocent and purely beautiful. Just stunning. My life is better for having been blessed by this song.
I absolutely agree and it makes me mad and sad at heart when people make cruel, unwarranted comments saying Clair is a pedophile song. It's most certainly NOT. The lyrics convey a real life situation where Gilbert shows love and affection for his managers Gordon Mills three year ole daughter and Clair was very fond of her "Uncle Ray"!
Moi aussi j ai perdue ma fille de 52 ans après 6 ans de maladie du cancer du sein elle as été très courageuse jusqu’au bout et cette chanson me rappelle que du bonheur avant❤😢
That's because now everything's sexualised. Especially where children are concerned. There is no innocence left - so everything has to be "problematic".
So this song was written for Clair Mills, the 3yo daughter of Gordon Mills, O’Sullivan’s producer for whom O’Sullivan would sometimes babysit. Sadly, producer Mills disputed song rights to “Clair”, and this plus matters relating to his producing of O’Sullivan led to a lawsuit - which Mills lost entirely. Meaning Mills lost quite a bit of money over it. So despite the song having been written with the best of intentions, things were not always so rosy with its later circumstances. Still, once Clair Mills was an adult, she apparently did not hold the unpleasantness against O’Sullivan and came, publicly, to at least one of his concerts where he acknowledged her to the audience. A gorgeous song. I remember it from the early ‘70s and then the famous legal case plus all the nasty gossip surrounding it. In the end though, I think it was written with the best of intentions and expressed great affinity for a human just starting out, entirely appropriately.

I Love this precious song. I have so many great memories of my childhood in the 70’s. That time was so magical for me and my siblings growing up. And the music of that era was a big part of it. I’m so blessed to have come up then. I wouldn’t change it for nothing.
I love this sweet song, is from an era where people were more human and kind to each other. The original vid is adorable. Those who made it into something that it wasn't I believe have been cheated of simple, innocent friendships made in childhood w/o agenda. As a small child, much like Clair, I had a sweet friendship with a much older boy who lived across the street, was friends with my older brother. I adored him. He was so good to me and so much fun; he would pick me up and carry me around, chase me, give me piggyback rides. This song reminds me of him. He was a kind-hearted teen and would bet he grew up to be wonderful father and husband.

Gilbert O'Sullivan is a top notch guy. Kind and loving and when in concert, he always meet his fans afterwards and give out his autograph and make time for a friendly talk with his devoted fans. As for his music, well its absolutely marvellous and he remains one of the finest singer/songwriters ever!
This is a lovely innocent song! It's probably the only time the word "murder" makes me laugh, and the sound of a child laughing makes me tear up. It's possibly the loveliest sound in the world.
I love this song and the name, and always wanted to name a daughter Clair. Since I never bore a daughter, 2 1/2 years ago when I got my puppy I named her Claire. She's my 4 footed doggie daughter. ❤❤
This song takes me back to my early teens, 14 or 15 then. His poster on my bedroom wall. I'm so pleased that he's still making music and is alive and well.
This song always makes me smile, because I can hear voice of a girl laughing the last part of this song. Gilbert O' Sullivan was inspired the girl who was a child of his producer, and he created this song? I see. Soothing, beautiful melody. He is the true melodist. Thank you for uploading ! いい曲だな、声もいい。alone againと違った印象を受ける、というか歌詞の内容が明るい。

Love this song , the giggles at the end are precious 👵🏻
MISSING THE 70s!
Gilbert O Sullivan
Thank you for the nice song 👍🏻👏👍🏻👏👍🏻👏🎵🎵🎵
Been to many live shows. Amazing he never performed this live. Great song.
True love song. Man, I miss those years. If you weren’t around, it’s inexplicable to describe.
Watchin this guy at the age of seven on top of the pops loved his songs now fifty five brings a tear to my eye remembering the seventies Gilbert your a legend
I have always loved this song by Gilbert , especially the little baby laugh at the end, Pure Genius.
That's not common for a guy who has sold millions of records
❤ Always loved this song....holds up well through the decades. 🎉 Salutations from coastal Mississippi
This is a lovely innocent song! It's probably the only time the word "murder" makes me laugh, and the sound of a child laughing makes me tear up. It's possibly the loveliest sound in the world.
Ça c’était de la musique, malheureusement une époque revolue
That brief key change mid-way through. It’s the melodious icing on the musical cake.
❤
Para mi esta es la mejor cancion de gilbert osuliban
This song is amazing. Goes back to memories of 70s growing up. I always liked it 😄. Can't replace these days of full of memories at the time. That times go bye.
