Yessss..anything between 35 and 45 works. 50 sometimes is a bit tight. I have used this lens for a short period and is really lovely. Tack sharp and lovely bokeh in most situations. Might check out the new Samyang 45mm too. Do you plan to review? It is meant to be good. Thanks for the review and the pictures.

The 35 mm is a great lens for environmental portraits without much distortion. Also , it is a perfect lens for doing street photography which is neither too tight or neither too wide. It feels more cinematic using this lens. I actually love this lens . So enjoyable to take photographs. And it is a super sharp lens for urban landscapes .

I use a 35mm for most of my wedding details shots. Having come from the Canon world where I owned the 35mm 1.4L I was never impressed with the Sony Zeiss 35mm 1.4. I picked up this one and it gets the job done in fine fashion! It joins my 28mm f2, 55mm 1.8, and 85mm 1.8 to make up one of the lightest wedding kits ever!

Brian Copeland I just picked this bad boy up used. I didn’t not think it was over priced for size and focus but for those complaining it’s going for $600 all day on eBay now. eBay charging tax now which takes away from some of the savings. Plan on using this plus the 85 for weddings now. I might sell my 55 now which will break my heart. The 35 is just that job and the coverage is more ideal for me. Tamron 28-75 is my back up just I case something goes wrong. Have had camera fail but never a lens. But as you know weddings you have to be prepared. How has your experience been in the field with it. I have not had a chance to put it to work yet but got some events coming up.

I see this focal length gaining in popularity. It’s great for editorial fashion shoots. It does a great job when shooting professional models but when shooting people that look like I do (aka non-model material) it’s not my first choice. It’s great at exaggerating flaws. In a few of my Zoom range lenses I have 35mm like in my 16-35 and 28-75 but I find I barely use 35mm for some reason. I would guess I won’t be getting this lens but it does look like a great option for those that do shoot in this focal length.

This lens does have a mount gasket. A tiny thin 'O' ring that sits ever so slightly proud. Probably enough to seal it from water given the tight fit and precision finish of the metal mount. In their promotional material Sony claim it to be dust and moisture resistant but with this footnote "Not guaranteed to be 100% dust and moisture proof." So I wouldn't shoot in the pouring rain with it or with any Sony camera except the A9 and A99.

  • @gitithadani

I actually prefer the 45mm f1,8 lens by samyang which is also light weight & significantly cheaper. I also have a Mir 35mm f2 (based on zeiss design) and gives quality rendering. I do however think thatthe sony 35mm f1.8 is a good value lens if one makes use of its AF features - which is why it is more expensively priced (af motor) and because there is no other lightweight lens in this category. But as I do a lot of manual focus compositional work + the 45mm is a very niceFL I went in for the samyang instead

  • @ZadieBear

I have owned if for nearly a month now, and finally went out and took some shots with it on my A7R3. For a $450 lens, it would be considered a great lens, but for $750, it just isn't worth it. The vignetting is significant even up to F5.6 (I seldom shoot beyond F5.6), and there is significant green fringing. It is sharp, but the bokeh isn't amazing given the cost. The AF is great though. I like the 35mm focal length for my walk around lens, so it will stay in my bag on a regular basis. At this point, I am not interested in going with the Sigma's because of the weight (and cost of the 1.2). At $450 I would give it 9/10 stars, but at $750 it is more like 7.5/10.

Wide open is wide open no matter what the aperture. f/1.8 is plenty of light and shallow DOF for a 35mm lens. The fact you have a very sharp lens wide open is a huge plus and something not many lenses offer. When using normal to telephoto lenses a larger aperture makes more sense. A 35 is on the normal side of wide angle and is not a lens that is always shot at the widest aperture. Having a deeper DOF is more useful. The wider a lens gets the smaller the focal point or subject is. This is why most wide landscapes are shot at f8 and beyond as is street photography. It’s as if once a photographer learns how to achieve bokeh they simply cannot stop. If you look at some of the greatest street photographers you’ll see much of the image is in focus. My point here is that the f/1.8 for a 35mm lens might just be the perfect lens/aperture available.

I feel like the 35 is more of an allround lens, but it could also be too close (same) to the 55..
The 25 would go well with the 55. And the 35 actually sits somewhere in between that, not wide enough, not close enough.

LT this is why I prefer the 35mm focal length for a lot of things. 50 always seems too short or too long. There’ve only been a couple of instances in years of shooting where I thought, “man, a 50 is just what I need right at this moment” that a 35 couldn’t accomplish. It’s simply a more versatile focal length imo.
The way I see it folks have a few choices for a prime kit. 18, 35, 85 or 24, 50 and 135 if you like shooting long.

I don't like the fact that the inside elements are loose when the lens is not powered or attached to camera body. That's not normal to me. Even though Sony says it is OK.

    Hi Stefan,
    Loved the review !
BTW - I just got my copy today and noticed some minor specs on the glass ( which are not dust - couldn't remove them with lens pen )
    Attached in the picture drive.google.com/file/d/1WwWbwJcXFChLo5TafNYjnErgY2iyIIff/view?usp=sharing
Do you think I should ask for a replacement or is it common to have minor blemishes as such ?
I took some shots with it and couldn't notice anything in the photos.
    Thanks for your advise !

I love this lens, but the bokeh can’t challenge 85mm prime lens. 85mm much better.
