This free LawnBoy mower starts and works fine, however, the right drive wheel is looked up. The fix wasn't as easy as I was hoping for. - Авто/Мото
Ah someone who actually fixes stuff as apose to replacing parts. That's why I liked and subscribe to your channel. Nice repair.
thank you Aldo Clausi, this one I could do, but there are limits to what I can save.
Not sure what I would have done before, but thanks to you, I know what to do now! Happy Holidays, Home Garage. As always, Thank you for your time.
Happy holidays A Patterson!
So glad you did this project and not me. Great diagnosis and repair. Glad you put it on its lid and showed us the complete how to do. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Thanks for the video's
thank you D Butler and Happy New Year as well.
Great repair idea, I never would’ve thought of that! I probably would’ve found a small screw and a lock nut to replace the pin or used JB Weld to epoxy it in place but the way you did it totally makes sense and is permanent.
thank you mjg263 I appreciate that.
Impressive work!
Thanks a lot!
Great video, that was pretty creative how you fixed the self-propelled gearbox, nice work!
Thank you very much, it was a desperation move, but I think it will work for quite some time.
You did a great job, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
thank you Waterman one, and Happy Holidays
Great fix mate, the melting the plastic around the pin brilliance. Cheers and seasons greetings.
Thanks, you too!
Great video. I had the same problem with a Deere mower several years ago. That mower has only one drive wheel. I ended up removing the drive gear and turning it into a straight push mower. But I saved the gear and I think I'll take a shot at fixing it. Thanks!
nice, good luck with it and thank you Passing Wind
Great repair! Great video!
thank you S Arnold, Glad you liked it!
Well done!
thanks
I just finished watching all of your videos. Keep up the great content and Merry Christmas.
Thanks, you too!
I have a 2003 Lawn boy 6.5 hp silver series, bought it new . This is my 20 th year using it. Love the self propelled and now that I'm soon 70, it really helps, always has lol. It takes me 1 hr to mow. .people ask me when I'm getting a rider, I say when I get old , some of my young neighbors ride, I could mow their lawns in 35 minutes or less.
you make a good point!
@@HomeGaragechannel I'm in pretty good shape, I have worked out and try to stay in shape , I still use weights and ride bike. Use it or lose it. My youngest daughter is soon 16 ! . My brother is 4 years younger , he is a weak old man.thanks for your videos
I would of done the same thing you did. Epic repair. I alway learn something new from you. You rock. Happy Holidays to you and your family 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
thank you RayFpv, and Happy holidays!
Good thi g you got the self propelled feature fixed, i think most mowers these days have the self propped, it is what attracts the buyer. Have a great Christmas my friend.
thank you Alexander Costa, and yes Self propel is where my moneys goes as well.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year , Enjoy the holidays . Looking forward to next years videos .
Happy holidays Chris's small engines!
Plastic welding comes in handy at times. Good repair. Happy New Year!
thank you Mike Spain and Happy new year!
This was a very interesting and very likely effective fix. It's too bad that the gearbox internals failed the way they did. If I had that situation, I would probably use something I happen to have - "Polyvance Airless Plastic Welder". One time, I had a Briggs Max engine (top mounted plastic fuel tank), and the tank was leaking at the bottom. I tried fixing it by melting the plastic, but it did not work. The so-called plastic welder is like an adjustable temperature soldering gun with specialized tips, and rods of different types of plastic. If you get good at it, you can do decent repairs to various types of plastic (car bumper skins, also). It wouldn't be worth buying it just for this single repair, but if you come across broken plastic a lot, it's something to consider.
thank you Tom Lewis.
@ Home Garage,Merry Christmas again! Love your videos!
thank you Beef Jerkey.
Happy Holidays !
Happy holidays!
Very interesting! Love my LawnBoy!!! Just put a new belt on mine and it’s raring to go!!!
you got that right!
Well done
Thank you Gerard Kiss.
Hi home garage I commented on your video a few weeks ago about my uncles trimmer I finally got them today they are Shitl 54 rc and 45c they need a tuneup the carburetor on both of them are done and bought a tune up kit for them. I put gas in them and both run great and very good compression, so hopefully the carburetor comes in this week to fix then up! 😁
stihl fs 45 have bad crank seal just check if its oil around seal and change if needed and will run many years
thank you RinkRats, and very nice work!
I would do what you did and fix it. Things that don’t work as they’re supposed to bug me. I really like your soldering iron trick! I probably would have drilled some holes through the gear and secured the pin with wire. Your idea is much better.
thank you Bruce Coleman.
Great repair. 👍 almost good as new the self propelled
I thought so too, thanks again Turning _wrenches85
Merry Christmas from Australia 🎄🇦🇺
Happy holidays!
Depending on how my budget is I might of bought another mower however I might of tried and repair the gears with some super glue and some plastic weld. It seems like the mower have some life in it still to see some more seasons. Thanks for sharing the video bro.
thank you Ramadin Sookhoo.
I hope you had a nice Christmas
I did thank you. I hope yours went well.
Thanks
No problem
Great Ideal and job on the repair. If it was my mower I would of tried to fix it. I'LL give you a handy tip for removing rtv. Use the Pro Goof Off it comes in a metal squirt can I buy it at Lowes it will soften the rtv and makes it easier to get off the surface. Merry Christmas! God Bless!!
very nice tip, I'll have to go and get some, Pro Goof off.
Great video really informative
thank you Will's Small Engine's
I save parts from junk mowers and would have looked for a replacement gear box, you did a great job and lets hope your fix last for years.
Thanks for showing inside the gearbox instead of just replacing the whole thing. Some of us want & need to see how the thing works.
thank you Uncle BS, and if it doesn't, I'll just save it, and wait for another
no problem David Coudriet.
I'm betting this repair is in my future. Only the right wheel on my Lawn Boy is powered. The left freewheels. After I check and see if the shaft is spinning I'll have to look inside the gearbox.
yes my guess could be inside the gearbox.
One thing to keep in consideration for the next time you have something similar to this, drill a larger hole through everything that's just big enough to clean everything up and get them true'd up, then buy a drill bit that's about a .002" oversized press fit or whatever the original oversized press fit is on the undamaged other side, cut the shank off of the bit to the right length and put a little bevel on both ends like the stock pins have.
You can buy what's called "indexable" drill bits that come in .001" increments, cutting the shanks off and using them to repair/replace little pins that wind up lost and damaged like the one's that a float pivot on is a handy fix, especially if you have a local hardware store that has them in stock.
sorry I try not to drill out the jets
@@HomeGaragechannel
Jets?
This video was about the pin coming out on the one side of the gears inside the transmission of a self propelled Lawn Boy mower.
yep i would done a bypass for sure no problem and not only is a better option but examining all the parts in the process is also a good viewing of common sense too etc.
that would work as well, thank you Patrick Stapleton,
@@HomeGaragechannel my pleasure mate i grew up with stuff like this etc.
Crazy repair. In my case I would have fixed it since I'm already there.
that was my thinking as well.
Yes I have a Kohler powered lawn boy self-propelled and the self-propellable not engage I was just wondering.. Thanx Thomas
I would need to know more about it, do you have the model and serial number, that would let me see, what your mower looks like.
Perfect repair, yeah you should have sealed the other side but it is what it is.
you got that right
Nice repair. I would have removed the engine off the deck, it’s only three bolts. Good repair job. Very ingenious!
Thanks 👍
I have never had this exact problem. Usually it's the wheel gear being stripped or if both wheels don't turn I figure the transmission is bad. I probably wouldn't spend 4 hours on a flip but now if I run across this problem I know what to check and how to fix it.
thank you Brian King
The best feeling come from fixing it right. Doing it half ways would only make me obsess about how it's not right. Now. if it's my neighbor's mower . . . I'm sure to tell him that one wheel drive is good enough to get the job done. Then snicker to myself knowing his shame.
that makes sense, thank you Joseph Fields
No idea on how to fix on but if it happens, I'd have to give it a shot. With this and other videos you have to try. 80 bucks for another, I'd put that away for a new machine.
that makes sense.
Interesting. The plastic welding was a great idea.
it was kind of a desperate move, but it worked, so I'm very pleased with how it turned out
6:04 there are many like it but this one is mine. Without me, my mower is useless, without my mower, I am useless.
thank you RabbitFootedKitty.
Home Garage i gotta old lawn boy i will trade with for that lawn boy
not at the moment, but thank you for the offer.
Merry Christmas everyone
Merry Christmas Christian Slattery.
😁😁
It’s a question of time.
If you have spare time and enjoy fixing things it’s a nice little project.
Not feasible for cost effective customer service.
Your own project it’s fine and might could sell mower for a fair price.
They basically make a lot of newer stuff as throw away so people buy another mower.
you are so correct
Question, I have the same model lawn mower, can you tell me which spark plug I need and the spark plug socket to use to remove the old one. Thanks.
here's a link to the plug
amzn.to/4aZjw8d
and I use an 11/16" socket
Any other recommendations on tools ...angled pliers....or split ring pliers......do you ever replace bolts or keep bolts on hand if they are too rusted?.....Bought a new drive gearbox if possible ....what do you consider too much time or cost....2 hours 1 hour ...35% pr 50% of average used value?
yes long angle pliers 45 degrees, Is what I use. Split ring pliers are only needed once in awhile but worth it. I only replace bolts if they are cross threaded or, have a rounded head. I don't have a problem using rusty bolts again. I never consider any time diagnosing or fixing, too much, whether it be 2 hours or 200 hours. you'll learn something from it. Cost wise, that's tough, I would say 45% the cost of a replacement, but it depends on your budget.
Hey home garage nice fix !!! My self propelled stoped working the transmission rotates on the axle and throws the belt any ideas on a fix?
yes without a belt, and the cable to activate it, the transmission will rotate on the shaft. Check to see if there's a problem with either pulley, also, is this a new belt, or was the belt replaced at some point? It may be the wrong size
Good video (narrative, editing, etc.). Considering buying the same mower. Borrowed it from the seller to use as a back-up as my Toro was in for service. Would like to have the Lawn Boy as a permanent back-up. Good to know how the transmission goes together, and what the weak points are. Currently, it won't run when warmed up. Count to 500, have lunch, and it starts, and runs fine again. Maybe the coil. He's going to look at it before I make a decision. Any idea what vintage this mower is? Early 2000s? What is the exact model? Thanks.
I do believe it's around a 2010 or so, and thank you Art Gum.
I commend you. I would have just trashed mower and purchased a new one. I like to tinker but only so much. If you had to do again would you repair, bypass, or replace?
still repair, and based on a cost stand point. I'm exceptionally cheap.
I'm excited for the next video, will you be posting tomorrow? I'll be there. 😃
yep
How often do you have to change the oil in the transmission?
hmm.. that's a good question. If I bought a new mower, I wouldn't even consider doing it for the first 5 years.. But I'm not really sure, since I've never bought one new. I just do it on the free mowers, because more than likely, they need it, And I have nothing to loose, since it was free.
Because I want things to work as they should I would’ve done what you did it’s just better that way
agreed
Weird. toro used that deck for the 36v e-cycler
thank you for letting use know
Does anyone know what size pin it needs for a front wheel? My front left wheel fell off while mowing and I lost the parts in the yard 🙃
Hey what gear oil did you use for this mower, i got a issue where the right wheel skips and locks up only while its deactivated, gonna check it out once i get my square bits but wondered what gear lube you used and is that rtv?
this was over 2 years ago so to be honest I don't recall which one it was. I found the information by searching the internet though. Same goes for the RTV. To be honest, I'm sure both were nothing special. Any RTV and Gear oil should work
@@HomeGaragechannel ok thank you, i hope its general stuff cause i have left over stuff from my project car
That is really strange that that trans cover says "General Transmission" on it. That is usually used on MTD mowers as Toro always had their own transmissions. I wonder if someone hacked up a trans to fit that mower. Toro's use a solid axle not a 2 piece like that one.
I never noticed that, Thanks for bringing it to my attention, Now I'm beginning to wonder .
Whats the sealant and oil?
gasket maker and Gear oil, your choice in weight.
Removal of the gear is an easy fix, but easy fixes takes the fun away.
In Australia to replace cost on a Victa is over $200, hence the bypass method.
I enjoyed watching the repair, for now it’s holding, if it fails I’m sure the bypass method would be that perfect fix.
What gear oil did you use for the gearbox?
That oil was strange being so brown any thoughts?
Debating Question Mower Oil vs Car engine oil even at the same number say 10-30?
Yes I don't know why the Oil was that color. As for the Oil Debate, that's a great video topic. The short answer is, nothing terrible will happen if you use car oil in a mower engine. As long as you change it every year, it should last, until something breaks on the engine. Using Oil that was meant for air cooled engines, is the best, when you really want your stuff to last. I would probably do this, if I mowed lawns for a living, whether as a side hustle, or as a full time job.
@@HomeGaragechannel My quality equipment or someone else’s always manufacture’s recommendations a mower on it’s last legs or used for mulching branches etc anything goes I’d say.
My debate is seeing other’s even on RUclips using a good quality oil that is not meant for air cooled engines, even though it’s a quality name manufacture, whom are the ones making specified oils for air cooled engines.
Note: Oil changes on Briggs & Stratton is 50 hours and Honda is 25 Hours.
@@HomeGaragechannel please, your welcome to debate Oil ain’t Oils in 2022
you can use Oil from the lawn and garden section, it's mean for 4 cycle engines, that are air cooled. The other option is to go to motorcycle shops.
The mower I'm repairing, neither of the wheels spin when I try to engage the self propel. And the I can't push the mower cause the wheels lock up. Is it possible it could be the belt?
I need a make an model to know what your project looks like
@@HomeGaragechannel Lawnboy 10641 (2009)
thank you for the information It helped out greatly. Unfortunately, if the won't spin, running or not running it means something is wrong with the transmission . I would take of gears at the wheels and make it a push mower. Otherwise a new transmission is about $100.
I would have replaced the pins with roll pins then sealed it like you did.
that's a good idea. I'll have to remember that next time
what state you live? if you in Massachusetts i can donate some new projects let me know. Great videos no gimmick strait to problem and fix.
I'm in the midwest, but its a very nice offer.
I had a nice Christmas I had a Amazon Gift Card
nice, I'm sure you'll put it to good use.
@@HomeGaragechannel Yup, bought myself a spark checker
that's a great start.
@@HomeGaragechannel Thanks 😃
It's really too bad you can't just buy the parts you need to make repairs instead of being forced to buy a complete transmission. Ah, the almighty $$ rules. Great repair job and excellent video.
thank you David W.
I'll keep this repair in mind if something Plastiky ever breaks on me.
thank you Mr Merhtin
though that repair looks neat but the downside is the plastic would just fall apart again at a certain point.
yes more than likely
if you're still having problem with it, make some 3d printed gears and replace the old ones.
that's an idea
Would the plastic be as strong?
This is a common problem
thanks for the information
it might look permanent but plastic gears? that wouls get damaged again sometime.
yes you are absolutely correct about that, they didn't want them to last forever.
@@HomeGaragechannel the honda mower ones are the quality ones back in the days. modern day stuffs not sure but i bet they cheap out overtime.
I believe you are correct.
I would have just taken the drive gears out and use it as a regular push mower
that was also an option too. thank you James Hedrick.
Could you maybe 3-D print those gears? Great video 👍
that's an idea. But I do have concerns on how durable 3-D parts are, when used in this way.
@@HomeGaragechannel I have had two things 3-D print made. One was a cup hold insert that is functional but flimsy and the other was battery holds for my kobalt/dewalt tools. The battery holds was very stout. So it may be the kind of plastic used? If it worked, you could start making a lot of hard to find pieces. Might make an interesting business venture as well.
I'm surprised you did all that. Seems you like Lawn-Boys. It would've been easier to just pack with grease and move on.
I don't know about liking them, but I do find them interesting to work on
@@HomeGaragechannel Well, a love/hate relationship with the past might be more accurate. Just disappointed to see you didn't melt the other pin-side in while it was apart. Now you get to make another future video when that side goes. :) You silly.
... what could be the issue with this
model serial number.
No bypass the self drive.
as for me i would just bash the drive gear to free it.
that would definitely work
I would have taken the drive gear out. It is a light mower and shouldn't be too hard to push.
yes you are right, This one is so very easy to use.
Even though it would have been easier to take the gears out, I really appreciate you taking the time to show how to fix it. Thank you.
no problem
I would of done exactly what you done. No such thing as wasted time while working on your own equipment,at least not in my books.
you are absolutely right William Snow
I swear I've seen this same gearbox get fixed, did you upload the wrong file?
I don't think so, do you think you can find the other video then?
@@HomeGaragechannel Unfortunately, I can't seem to find where I saw this before. I distinctly remember the various details (mixed blue\gray sealant, the loose pin, using the soldering iron to fix the gear) from another one of your videos, but it could just be you had to fix another one the same way. Strange either way. Still a good video, cheers.
really?, I might have to look around and find it myself, thanks.
All that sealent ugh 😫
I know, I couldn't get away with any less. I didn't show it, but I had to seal it twice, because the fist time, it leaked when I put a "sufficient" amount around the edge. That's when I realized someone had already damaged it, by prying it open.
@@HomeGaragechannel yes it's a crying thing to go fix something someone else messed up
:)
good to see you again
Here in the hills I need both drive wheels so I'd fixed it like you did. Then do something else when or IF it broke again. Good job and BLESSINGS!
Thanks 👍
@@HomeGaragechannel SURE!
