  • Voices of Music performs "La Cupis," a movement from Rameau's Cinquième Concert. Live, HD video from the the "Let's Dance" concert in San Francisco, February, 2012.
    An anonymous manuscript, titled Concerts en Sextuors and probably dating from the 1750s, contains an interesting arrangement of six of Rameau's works scored for a group of six strings. In some cases, solo works for harpsichord are used as the model, in others, the music is sourced from Rameau's ensemble compositions for harpsichord, violin (or flute) and viola da gamba from 1741, Pièces de clavecin en concert. What is unusual about this manuscript is that the virtuosic parts for the harpsichord are given to the string instruments: the arranger had a canny knowledge of Rameau's harmonic style, and was able to skillfully integrate extended harmonic
    sequences into the score. The ms. comes from the library of Jacques-Joseph-Marie Decroix, and although there is no evidence to support the theory that he was the arranger he is often given credit by virtue of ownership. There were many brilliant composers in France who had the ability to revise the compositions, but we may never know for sure who made these arrangements: it is customary in these cases to look to the students-Rameau dedicated many works to students and fellow composers-likely candidates include the encyclopedist Diderot, Anne Jeanne Boucon, Claude Balbastre and Antoine Davergne. The works have fanciful titles that
    sometimes include Rameau's colleagues; La Cupis refers to Jean-Baptiste Cupis, the French violinist.

    How can be Rameau not considered on the same level as Bach or Handel I just can't understand, he had immense knowledge, technical skill, experimentation and taste. And what dramatist and orchestrator he was!! Perhaps it is still for these obvious historical and political reasons(German romantic nationalism and French Revolution) that left his work forgotten until the early 20th century.

      I think the french audience was different from german or english at this epoc and the genius of Rameau was to give them what they could ear and not to lead them to too metaphysic or abstract music like Bach or too harmonical and elaborated works such as Haendel.. Plus he could not go too far from Lully standards and had to sound typical french ..What he did brillantly.. His other handicap is that he was considedred as the old regime 's typical musician and was eclipsed after french revolution and just exhumated recently..new générations need time to learn know appreciate his music and it takes long.. by the way, i do not think he can be said being at same level as Bach.. he is really essentially different.. his works were not based on musical architecture , but on the research of theatrical effects due to harmony.. the parques trio in Hyppolite and Aricie for example..

      Rameau is very highly regarded by musicologists and performers. Modern audiences favor solo concertos and Italian opera, so Rameau is not writing in "popular" genres. However, instrumental suites from his operas do very well on RUclips.

      @@VoicesofMusic there was also another thing just 40 years after the baroque era. Just before the French revolution the works of rameau were famous among the nobles. So, it was considered by the rebels that any art that expressed the nobles and the aristocracy would "corrupt" the Republic . The fact that rameau's work is a bit underrated can be explained by the French rebels who just ruined whatever had to do with nobility.

    Whoever recorded this performance did a ridiculously good job whether they realize it or not! And whoever decided to use this instrumentation for the 'sextuor,' especially the contrabass and theorbo, was using their brain! The interpretation is really good as well. One of the best actually... That, combined with the absolute melodic and harmonic genius of MR. JEAN PHILIPPE RAMEAU results in a thing that is, dare I say, TOO GOOD.

    The beauty of his music vibrated at the same level as that of J.S Bach and Handel. For me, they represent three pinnacles of achievement that are hard to reach in Baroque, let alone surpassed. ♥

    Gorgeous. This is my favorite version of this piece, thanks to both, the transcription and your interpetation. (Absurdely, the French Wikipedia site is entirely devoted to "questioning" the role of Rameau himself in this arrangement of his "Pièce en Concert", and to its "relative clumsiness"!)

    • @VoicesofMusic
      @VoicesofMusic  5 лет назад +3

      It's a very interesting version; possibly one of his students, but we can't rule out that Rameau made such an arrangement and this may be a later copy or rearrangement.

      lamusicamagnifica14 This is RUclips problem that pops up every now and then. You can try back later, try a different browser or even a different playback resolution. Most of the time it repairs itself, but sometimes not, but only RUclips can fix it. The vid is also available on Vimeo.
