The Concerto in F Major Op. 6 No. 2 by Arcangelo Corelli, complete. Performed on original instruments by the early music ensemble Voices of Music. 4K UHD video from the Steffani Stabat Mater concert, March 2015, San Francisco.
300 years ago, Corelli's concertos, Op. 6, were published in 1714 in Amsterdam: these works dramatically affected the style of the baroque concerto for the next generation of composers. The reception of this magnificent collection, one of the crown jewels of baroque instrumental music, was in no small part due to the music publishing boom which began around 1690, as well as Corelli's signature set of violin sonatas, Opus 5, of which as Michael Talbot notes "at least 42 editions had appeared by 1800". The wide availability of Corelli's works created an international Corellian style. The concertos are written in an expanded trio sonata form, in which the two solo violins and continuo provide the core ensemble within the larger tutti framework.
Corelli composed his concerto in F Major without the usual three or four sections, but twelve sections (many of which are asymmetrical); two of these twelve are simply cadence markers consisting of one or two bars, the the remaining twelve movements are numbered in the video. The work begins with an upbeat flourish which then serves as anchor points for the following imitative sections. The wistful adagios provide an excellent foil to the persistent rhythms of the allegros.

Corelli doing La Folia rocks my socks off. So amazing.
I'll never forget how I fell in love with Corelli's music. I was fifteen and looking for new music to listen to. Before that I listened mostly to Bach and Vivaldi concertos. I read that this Corelli guy is a big deal in how he changed the way people played the violin as an instrument. So while I walked my dog that evening, I listened on my iPod to an album that contained concertos 1-6 by the capella istropolitana ensemble. I had been feeling down at the time, dealing with personal issues, but the moment the fourth movement of concerto No.2 began I brightened up and knew I liked Corelli's music. From then on I would listen to his music often: while riding my bike to school in the morning, doing homework, doing nothing, going to sleep, working. Even if I'm not actively listening to music, I still hear these concertos and his Op.5 sonatas echoing in mind, helping me to make sense of this confusing world, and to rationalise my fears.
I see myself listening to Corelli's music for another seven years, and likely the rest of my life.
oh....that 's good and that's fine ! Gratulatians whis that !
Corelli is life. He sparks a new "thing" within all of us. I'm glad you found Corelli and that you are doing well! All the best!
Eric tas ize
Hoi Eric, how are you , alles ok ? Groeten uit Nederland !
I also discovered Corelli at 15 (literally still 15) because I played his Christmas Concerto with my youth group and I was first violin soloist! Greatest experience of my life, I wouldn't trade it for the world!
Yes.
Yes.
The audio quality of your videos is simply sublime... Ten minutes of goosebumps... And this happens to me every time I saw one of your videos...
Thank you very much for your beautiful channel and your content!
I hope to listen in future to other recordings of Corelli's Concerti Grossi from Voices of Music!
Glad you enjoyed it!
This is awesome! The melody in these string instruments is rich in resonance, vivid and rhythmical tempo in the allegros with dynamic and delicate tones. The violin is the chief support to fortify music!
Renowned violinist and teacher, Arcangelo Corelli spent his entire career in Rome. He composed mainly for the theater, the church and in the service of cardinals, but also powerful patrons. The twelve Concerti Grossi published in Amsterdam in 1714, a year after his death and constitute his last opus. Although they were published posthumously, they had already existed since 1709. In Corelli's works, the concertino consists of two violins and a cello, with the harpsichord providing the harmonies on the bass line (bass continuo). In the twelve Concerti Grossi which make up Op. 6 by Corelli, the concertino trio also plays in unison with the ripieno, making these concertos convertible into trio sonatas simply by leaving out the ripieno players and making some modifications for the viola part. The function of the ripieno is therefore more to add a fourth dimension of sonority to the solo trio than to contrast with it. By observing exactly this opposition or rivalry of slow and fast, loud and soft, of the fullness of the concerto grosso and the delicacy of the concertino, the ear is ravaged by a singular astonishment, just like the eye by the contrast of light and shadow. Another imitated aspect of Corelli's work is his distribution of forces in the Concerti Grossi of Opus 6. The etymology of the term concerto is perhaps debatable, somewhere between the concept of separate forces « in conflict » or « playing together ». The contrast between a group of soloists (concertino) and the entire orchestra (ripieno or concerto grosso) is fundamental to the genre. As Corelli biographer Peter Allsop states, « The telling distinction in Corelli's title is not 'concerto' but 'grosso' because the composer's works are primarily orchestral ». The twelve Concerti which form this opus constitute in fact a form of apogee of this musical form in the Baroque era, at the same time as a testimony to the exceptional talent as a violinist and conductor possessed by this Italian composer. Arcangelo Corelli affirms the independence of the violin with the desire to remain within the limits of the vocal range and a concern for simplicity in the exploitation of the resources of the instrument to which he refuses unnecessary virtuosity. *Lucien*

Corelli’s music will have a special place in my heart! And you all play it with such passion and accuracy and beauty!
Italian violinist and composer Arcangelo Corelli is one of the most well-known composers of the Baroque era. 0:20
As a composer, Corelli is known as the first composer to do away entirely with the old church modes and write only major-minor tonalities.
Arcangelo Corelli was one of the first masters of the baroque period, a skilled violinist and admired by legends like Bach and Handel. 2:34
He wrote music almost exclusively for string instruments, including trio sonatas and violin sonatas.
However, it is in his own Concerti Grossi Opus 6 that Corelli reached his creative peak and climaxed all his musical contributions. 7:24
fantastic! bravi!!
Thank you for sharing.

o wat ijselijk mooi is dit toch; soms kan ik er niet goed tegen
Fantastici sunlimi
류트(rute)가 함께하는 것이 참 좋습니다.
corelli in my belly
As a professional violist, I love playing and listening these great works. I especially love this group of performers AND the room they perform in is awesomely audibly perfect! Is it still a functioning church? Where is this place located?
Thanks so much. Most of the concerts are filmed in St Mark's Lutheran, SF
It would be wonderful if some rare and unheard of viola work could be presented by your group. I know of some written but almost never performed or recorded.
Perhaps the Michael Haydn Concerto for viola and harpsichord or the Telemann Concerto for two violas? Rarely recorded and performed.
I feel like listening to sicko mode. Mood change a lot
Are you planning to do the concerto grosso op. 6 no. 5?
Hope so, it will be sometime before we can gather.
☺💛
Absolute KönnerInnen :)
:)
wanneer je dit met je ogen dicht beluistert, beleef je een soort wonder . . . .
Hello! Can you say me please the tunning Hz? Thanks! :D
+Sergio Ariel Díaz Díaz 415.3 Hz
+Voices of Music Thanks you. Can you say me please where can i find theoretical foundation and the why, about the 415.3 Hz? It's so interesting for me.
if i might hazard a guess, im pretty sure thats "baroque tuning" which is pretty much a halfstep below regular modern tuning, which means that if you got a peice of baroque music written in C major, if you played it at sounding pitch on modern tuned instruments, it would actually be in B major, and so on.
vanaf 7.27 is een feest ! en niet meezingen is bijna onmogelijk !
7:27 This is the part I want to play on the recorder in the ensemble. Would you like to do it with someone? Megumi Kinai
9 mensen die hun vak verstaan en meer ….. ! Ik hou van ze
Jus curious, was that a mistake at 9.20 ? thx
+Keith Vernon-Hutchinson Sounds good here.
+Voices of Music: I should be more precise, @ 9.19 ? I'll have to get a score. I just found the dissonance a bit odd. I am no specialist in this form of music and generally dissonance is no problem for me, expecially in modern music, in fact I like it, it just caught me by surprise in this piece. Beautifully played. Thx
+Keith Vernon-Hutchinson I hear a brief modulation.....but it sounds like Corelli :)
Nine people--- sounds like an orchestra !
What's instrument is in the middle? it's like an organ but no pedals.
An organ with no pedals.
Whats the name of that instrument on the middle?
baroque organ
webmar thank you
