I enjoyed waiting in line on this one..crazy right?who enjoys a line wait..It just there was something about it..The water breeze from the ride,the screams of the people on the drop..It was a happy time of my life that I'll never forget..Thanks to my dad that would take us 2X a summer here.
Talk about a walk down memory lane. My mom bought us season passes so we went pretty often. It was a sad day when they said they were closing for good. Astroworld was a huge part of my childhood.
Thank you for persevering theme park history. I may not be able to visit Astro World anymore other than in my memories but this really helps bring back some things I forgot of my childhood. THANK YOU! Keep doing what you’re doing.
I brought one of the logs that you ride in at a auction for 300 buck's its in my man cave, friends and family come over and take pictures sitting in it all of the time.
I would love to sit in another boat. I used to be a foreman over Bamboo from 87-90. Best job ever. So sad politics took it away. The fast part of the flume is the “Sluseway” (check spelling). Oh yea,,, I heard a couple guys poured a 5 gallon bucket of soap in the ride and it closed down the ride with knee high bubbles on the loading dock and sent bubbles floating all the way to Excalibur. Great times !!
I stopped going to Astroworld when WB took over Six Flags. It just kind of went downhill from there, at least that's how I felt. they had some pretty good rides I enjoyed that they messed up by building other rides directly over them. Bamboo shoot was one of my favorites back in the early 80's although I could have sworn the ride was made to look more like riding through a garden. the ride in the video above looks a lot like it was let go and not properly taken care of. I remember there were flowers and trees with flowers here and there. then there was Thunder River. I liked the ride better before they built the water rides over it for WaterWorld. it wasn't the same after that. the river of no return was another favorite of mine. although when the gorilla face burned down the ride felt a little different. but it was still a fun boat ride for me. then they decided to built XLR8 over it and the ride died at that point. they altered the river and the ride afterwards and then later they just closed it down and filled the river in. some people who said that if you rode the XLR8 in the later years you could look down and see some of the remnants of the old ride below. an old statue that was part of the mayan type area of the ride.
That's swesome. Brings back memories for sure. I worked at Astroworld in rides the summer of 1989 and 1990, on the Bamboo Shoot. We knew how to time boats so that people riding the Bamboo Shoot would get soaked by water falling from the Tidal Wave above.
I say, rebuild Astroworld in the Astrodome. Imagine Astroworld with air conditioning. It would also solve the problem on what to do with the empty Astrodome. If I only had a few 100 million dollars.

Loved, loved, the Bamboo Shoot! and the Taxis, Alpine Sleigh Ride, Wagon Wheel, Needle Ride, Black Dragon, Serpent, Runaway Rickashaw, and the River of No Return. Fantastic childhood memories!
Too bad astroworld turned into a breeding ground for young thugs and a season pass became an all summer, sun up to sun down babysitting for working parents near the area. Was an awesome place to go during the summers wish I could now take my kid there.
Such beautiful scenery what a shame it’s just a empty field now they say it was too expensive because property tax but now it’s just empty generating zero cash flow

PS - Still boggles the mind that a city like Houston doesn't have a theme park like Astroworld anymore. They really need to rebuild it.
