While loading into the sky tram in 1973 I recognized the attendant as my best friend who had moved to Houston from Victoria several years before. As the ride took off we yelled each other's names and waved. I have never seen her again.
This video made me cry. I was not born during these times but I remember going there in the later 80’s. Just having fun. This is why Houston’s crime rate is so high now. We need somewhere fun to go besides bars and clubs where we can be humble and a kid again for once.
people started using it to babysit their undisciplined little bastards and got it shut down its the main reason why we dont have astroworld anymore is because of idiots!!!!
OMG..oh my what memories..I live 165 Miles from Houston in San Marcos Tx..My dad took us for the 1st time to Astroworld in 1984 when XLR8 had just opened..The highlight of our trip was riding my very first rollercoaster in EXCALIBUR and then I rode XLR8 at night with my sister and we really enjoyed it..On my way out we rode Skyscreamer and I was terrified..I was only 10 yrs old and theese rides started it all for me..Since those years I have been on over 100 rollercoasters..All over United States and Till this day when I ride a new thrill ride I yell Astroworld right before the drop as a tribute to my all time favorite park..Cal me crazy but this park was what made me love the thrill rides..I am 48 yrs old and I travel all across the United States just for amusement parks..Astroworld holds a place In my heart as I grew up here from 1984-2005 I still remember my mom (may she rest in peace)and my dad telling us it's time for Astroworld in the summer..We would go 3X a year..I will continue to travel to parks and honor Astroworld the only way I know how by riding thrill rides..I loved the video it took me back..ASTROWORLD FOREVER..
i used to live 3 blocks from it. and would sneak in constantly through the train station in the back. then they built the lonestar amphitheater. i had to start going in the front gate. i loved this place!!!
We lived in Houston mid 70s.. and this brings back some great memories ! think the first time we went was 1976. I remember getting dropped off around 9am and picked up around 10 pm, we had so much fun there all day. Just before we moved, they got the Texas Cyclone, that was the icing on the cake. Fun, meeting girls, food and tons of walking....nothing else compared when you where 12 yrs old
John - thank you, thank you, thank you for posting this. My family’s first trip to Astroworld was in August of 1973. I have a few photos my parents took of me and my sister while there. Seeing your film reminded me of so much more than just what I can remember from the photos. I was 5 at the time and my sister was 3. Of course, she doesn’t remember any of it. My biggest memories had been that boot slide, the large walk- through pumpkin, the carousel and the seals. My dad passed away six years after our trip in 1979. I then lost my mom ten years later. As I get older each year memories of them are slowly fading away, especially of my dad. However our vacation to Astroworld remains a good memory and your video brought back even more. Thank you, again.
I sure do miss Astroworld... i have wonderful memories of going there as a kid and then taking my own children there before they shut it down.. I wish Six Flags would build us another park..!!
Thank You very much for posting this! The park is exactly as I remember it back then (I’m about the oldest’s age) Had forgotten about the boot slide till now!
This is great. Priceless footage. I went the first time with my parents in 1968 w the Church Youth group. Spent many a summer days there when I got a lil older. The good ole days the 70s and most of the 80's.
I had a season pass from 1978 to 1984 and then when my two daughters were old enough we had passes up until the last year they were opened. We went the last day as well.
Assuming your Mom is in the yellow/green ... Her white sandals were epic back then. My Mom had something similar she would wear with white slacks and a red/white polka dot blouse. Family moved to Houston in summer of '75 from back East when I was 8. Me and siblings had season passes in the early 80s and spent our whole summers there and WaterWorld. Ended up working there in the mid-80s. Loved growing up in Houston as it was really cool to see the city explode in growth and even to this day still transforming. So much better than growing up in a city that never changes.
Our church youth group went there in 1975 or 76. I was too afraid to go on The Cyclone😱. I remember the log ride, and a ride where we would stand against a wall and we would spin around and the floor would drop and we would stick to the wall. I also remember the honey buns were huge.
Are you one of the little kids in the video? I would have been 8 years old and I have fond memories of my parents taking me and my 2 older siblings there back in the 70's. My mom would ride The Alpine Sleigh Ride with me and my Dad loved the River of No Return.
I thought so - awesome! Your video footage is soooo clear - it makes Astroworld look so NEW. I'm pretty sure I was there in 1973 too, because I have a memory of riding the Astrowheel with my mom when I was very little, as well as lots of other memories! Your video almost brings tears to my eyes! This version of Astroworld was sooo family-friendly! Thank you!!
This is cool. I never had the opportunity to visit Astroworld. Heard good this about it from friends in Houston. Tfs. What's the name of the music used?

Thank you JohnYChen for this 1973 home video. It brought back memories. I was there in June 1972. I was 11 years young. 👍🌼
No problem. Thanks for watching, Houston really needs a theme park.

I remember riding the Viper and the Texas Cyclone at Astroworld in the 90's. Good times.
My visit to Astroworld was Sept '86...The first "big" coaster I ever rode was X-LR8. So many wonderful memories of this place....

Glad you enjoyed it!
We moved from the UK to Houston between 1981-1984. I was around five when we arrived and still have faded memories of Astroworld and Pipe Organ Pizza.
I had to come here after seeing Apollo 10 1/2. Very cool to see this
That is incredible! Thank you so much! The Boot slide!!!!
No prob. Was glad that I was able to preserve part of my childhood.
Never got to visit this place.

Yep, that's my Mom. Born and raised in Houston. I do love this city. Hopefully we will get another major amusement park some time in the future.

Nice. I wasn't able to visit even though I almost did when I visited relatives over in Dickinson, and they attended Astroworld religiously!!!
My mom has my season pass card. The one with the colorful Astroworld font with the stars shooting out.
That’s before travis born
Oh cool! My home town. I went there then :) you always got a face full of water coming off the bamboo thing!
Travis us the only reason I’m here
Wish you were here
Same

Hi guys! Can we use some parts of this footage in our next video? With full credits, of course. Thanks!!
Sure, just make sure to give credit in the video with a link to the original video in the description.
Wonder if it's still possible to buy Super 8 film.
This is cool. I never had the opportunity to visit Astroworld. Heard good this about it from friends in Houston. Tfs. What's the name of the music used?
The two songs are from the youtube creator studio. Song one is Safety Net by Riot and song two is Spring in my Step by Silent Partner
we all know why astroworld had to shut down
