- Chances are that you’ve probably already seen and heard those Lo-Fi playstists here on RUclips with the infamous “lo-fi girl” or “study girl” as their thumbnail and background.
As the resident lo-fi poster girl, she was probably your companion to an all-nighter you pulled for a university assignment or a long overdue project, all while she did her own work on her never-ending journal in a quaint Miyazaki-like bedroom.
Few RUclips characters are more recognizable and beloved than Lofi Girl. But, did you know that she has her roots in a Ghibli movie?
But what even is Lo-fi music? Why did this girl become the poster-child for it’s music? And what is the origin of this aesthetic that led it to become a digital phenomenon? All that lies ahead.

I actually heard of the inspiration for this was a scene in The whisper of the heart
Makes sense since most of the artstyle feels a lot similar to me
Yes, whisper of the heart for visual inspiration and samurai champloo/cowboy bepop for audio inspiration
Shizuku was the original image for it until they made their own. I don't know if it was due to legal reasons or just gaining popularity it was changed but yes it was originally from "Whisper of the Heart."
(also was what got me to watch it in 2018 and its now my favorite movie 😂)
I’ve been having a hell of a time finding a copy of the original.
I JUST WATCHED THAT MOVIE AND WHEN I SAW THAT SCENE I YELLED “LOFI GIRL?” IM NOW FINDING OUT THAT IS WHERE SHE ORIGINATED ABHH
And I'm sitting here right now going back and forth between two different streams trying to solve the blue room mystery. Feel like I'm part of Lofi Girl history.
Correction: both Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo premiered on Adult Swim (CB in 2001 and SC in 2005), before Toonami was canceled on Cartoon Network. Toonami returned, but to Adult Swim this time, in 2012.
I have heard almost all of the Cowboy Bebop soundtracks and nothing on there is lofi. AS would use lofi in its later bumpers and since you aren't American, I would not expect you to know how AS was during its early days since the block premiered in 2001 as well, when I was in high school. But anyone with any knowledge of Cowboy Bebop knew it was a heavily jazz based soundtrack with a very crisp sound.
Agreed
I really did not expect the history of lofi girl to be so interesting.
Damn, I didn't expect it to get quite that deep. Great video!
Today, they released a Synthwave radio and I totally love it.
Really enjoyed this video, one of your best yet
The Lofi girl lore had me sucked in around the time of Lofi boy theory’s so I’m just getting caught up to make sure nothing was missing from my knowledge
i like this. glad to see you back :)
Awesome editing
Was always curious about her, thanks!
Your stuff is really entertaining. ty :)
Love you mentioning Samuria champloo 2:31
really nice video! thanks
Beautiful video, lovely! A big fan of lofi girl, glad to learn more.
Just a small nitpick, the audio balancing for this video is a bit wonky, the voiceover being hard to hear sometimes, especially during the opening.
Keep up the great work!
Thanks dude. One day lofi music just magically appeared into my life, but never knew how it came to be. Appreciate the history lesson
great video!
I’ve always enjoy the music but I’ve just never really had time to just sit there and listen but I was inspired enough to make my own drawing of lo-fi girl and I’m thinking of making more
Great vid hope to see more
Holy shit you're still alive. I just realized you're start uploading again. Jesus, this takes me back to 2013-2014 anime review era
They're a team now, and they are killing it! Hope their views go up fast
@@tilmanvogel2387 Well they are different people now, rather.
@@AndrewDeer1 Mainly one other guy apparently, but the original creator said he might come back from time to time
@@tilmanvogel2387 makes sense
How did I miss this video when it came out?
Oh, well. Glad I checked.
Cool video!
What are the odds of me googling "Lo-fi Girl" for research purposes, only to find this video uploaded an hour ago? A sign perhaps?
You probably have to do a video about Artzie Music or vaporwave or future funk or something related now.
Any given day you walk into my office, it's either Lofi Girl or Chillhop playing. The odd day Nirvana or AIC, but Lofi is something that doesn't offend, and people just get into...
Amazing
Interesting! ❤
I felt like the inspiration was from whisper of the heart
Lofi Girl is None, Lofi Girl is EVERYONE
Lofi Girl isnt from one single country, She is citisen of all nations.
I watch the lofi girl everyday!
I'm enjoying the video I get More information about it.
the mixing is a bit off, the "intro" music is way too loud compared to the voice over
who else remebered the original Lofi Girl?
I may be remembering it wrong but the original study girl on the Chilled Cow channel was the pre-kid mom from the anime movie Wolf Children. They got copyright hit, went dark, the Jade came into the picture.
Oh, the Study girl has quite Hosodesque aesthetic, don't you think? There could be something more to it, possibly.
I broke my arm watching Whisper of the Heart in 2008.
How?
@@AnimeEverydayYT Swang on the living room door like a monkey then fell and landed on my arm during the credits. Big sis had to shut me up until mum got back.
@@ShintyShinto you swang on the door? Did it tell you the Whisper of Heart sucks because I would’ve swung on him as well.
No inanimate object tells me that without getting a beat down, ya know?
@@Joyceages Inanimate objects didn't start talking shit to me until after the fall.
Some of the background music, especially around 5:05, makes it hard to understand what you're saying
Studying is good for kids and teens
Rlly cool but damn he didn't talk about J Dilla at all and kinda just only talked about Nujabes?
I like your visuals and delivery, however a part of your script (especially around her character design evolution) seems to be word for word the same as on the Lofi Girl Wikipedia page.
Either some editors there have copied your video or you've copy/pasted their stuff.
Kinda weird if you ask me
Just lol
Lofi is 99% hifi now tho
High fidelity meme scholarship.
Whisper of the heart is not a Miyazaki movie
Whisper of the heart was the original screenshot used. The lo-fi girl was made with a brief if Miyazaki-esque style.
Not claiming WotH to be Miyazaki.
Hip Hop.
As someone who's been more interested in animation than LoFi beats I never really got into that chillin vibe everyone describes they use these sounds for. For me its repetitive beats would drive me more insane than help me study or work. Which is a bit ironic as I love Watanabe's work in both Bebop and Champloo. So I know there are applications of the music genre that works even for me.
That aside. I have been increasingly curious about the origin of the visuals in these endless loops. Those are for me, more mellow-chill vibe inducing than the music itself. So I found this brief exploration very interesting nonetheless. :)
I find it a bit odd that chillwave is mentioned in this video. Is it being referenced as a type of lo-fi music?
Nu-juh-bess* if you listen to a single song of his the rappers usually say his name at the start
The way he says it is a reference to mutterings of the millions of new homeless when AI takes over all the jobs in a few years
Yeah no kidding. People are such sheep
