- Out of all the anime studios out there, it's hard to find one that's made such an impact like Gainax, but the question is, where have they gone?

never forget that beside Evangelion, most popular shows the studio made (like gurren lagann, FLCL, panty & stocking) were made by people who left gainax and are now in studio trigger, so of course the current gainax is a shell of its former self
what do you even mean? anno also left ganiax to create his own studio khara to now develop the rebuild series.
@@brucewillis2399 sounds like the same shit all over again.
No Gunbuster?
Ah, Panty & Stocking. This was MY shit. Too bad it kicked me in the balls and ran away, just to remind people what studio made this. This was MY underwhelming evangelion finale.
TL;DR: Gainax is living on a beach somewhere off of EVA royalties and merchandise.
thelinedrive If you only knew had bad things were
*stonks*
they don't lol, khara is already taking over the ip. they are also suing gainax for 100 m. yen because ip issues
Gainax filed for bankruptcy
Rest in peace, Gainax. You're going to be missed...
It's still around, sure it's on a cliff, but it's not fall yet.
Do i sense a Precure fan??
@@euphoriaaa7671 Do I sense Toei Animation and Chaudhry Pictures (my film company) buying all of Gainax's franchises?
Gainax lives in Trigger now. Gainax was vacated in 2010, and is just hanging around for whatever reason, even though everyone inside who mattered has moved eleswhere (mostly Trigger)
But are they still alive? didnt they die in 2020-21??? i saw GAINAX on today's Hoshikuzu Telepath episode's end credits and my mind exploded... @@nef36
It all comes tumbling down...

UPDATE: as of June 7th, 2024, Studio Gainax has officially filed for bankruptcy. I'm honestly more surprised they even survived this long.

BOI MAKE MORE OF THIS. (it does seem to be doing worse than normal videos view wise.) I didn't even know what gainax was until now thanks I honestly hope you make more videos like this. I can't stop you just know an audience for this stuff exists that's all.
If you want to see a funny dramatized origin story of Gainax, you should watch Otaku No Video. It's only about an hour long and is an absolute classic.
@@otakubullfrog1665 thanks mate I'll definitely think about it.
I honestly thought that Gainax just went bankrupt years ago and was reformed as Trigger
Mate how did you not know what Gainax was?
@@Ben-fx9kx i focus more on the anime itself than the production of it. I havent watched anything that gainax has made so...
"A house divided, cannot stand." - Abe Lincoln.
Also it can't stand when you two sons leave and take the load beams.
That's tywin lannister quote.
...and who was creating the division that divided the house?
*FACT:* Gainax was only able to stay survive for all these years because Hideaki Anno was depressed.
Some sources claim Anno approached Gainax for the Eva remakes after the studio was already committed to TTGL and they advised him to start his own studio so he could get proper funding.
Neon Genesis Evangelion will always be my favorite anime ever, the theme is the best and I won’t ever get tired of it
Every time I watch it, it just makes more and more sense, like new layers opening to me. First seen it when I was 13 or 14, since then I rewatch it almost every year and there's always something new
I was 16 when I saw Evangelion. Never seen anything like it. I loved the dark wtfery.
I talked about my film company buying all of Gainax's franchises with Toei Animation, so what about a modern Evangelion sequel/remake?
I would love to see one of these on Sanrio.
That's actually a pretty good idea...
Sanrio is pretty strong though. They got massive hit with Aggretsuko.
This situation really describes how fucking important menagment is. Gainax was full of talented people, imagine how much more amazing anime they could have made if the studio knew how to properly organise those talents. Instead, most of them ended up leaving to the place where their talent is actually valued
No mention of the fact that their last major series is a 12 episode car commercial?
I guess we will never get panty and stocking season 2.
Rock amolie I wouldn’t be surprised if a studio like Trigger would try that and be like, “Okay, how can we ruin Gainax even further?”
But you don't know yet. Be patient.
They made a sequel to Gunbuster at many years of distance. Moreover, when you are in deep shit, to make a sequel of an old success is a pretty standard move.
Not sure if they actually meant to make an sequel or just trolled us by making the ending so fucked up you just have to watch it twice.
I want a season 2 so badly
This is a hella fascinating. Its a mix of anime meets 'abandoned' or ' dead mall' types of series
Great and insightful video :D loved it my man!
You did a good research and presented it well, without a boring moment. Very profesional and pleasant structure on the video. I'd watch more of those contends, yes
So essentially, the core members of Gainax all got up and left, created their own company, and now Gainax is just an empty shell that's somehow still propped up to give the illusion that it hasn't kicked the bucket, even though functionally it had
Update: On this very day of 7/6/2024, Studio Gainax has filed for bankruptcy. Their trademark has been transferred to studio Khara.
Welp, after the recent news from Gainax and Anno exposing the studio, I hightly doubt that their next project Zero Century (their trilogy film based on Leji Matsumoto's works) won't be redeemable for them...
Dude please make more videos like this, I love your fandom files and stuff but I live for video essays. It might be somewhat discouraging to make videos that you’ll know less people will watch but if the topic interests you you should totally do it; ik that this has a lot less views than a bunch of your other videos but 14k is still a large audience who seem to care abt this stuff. Aside from that I’ve actually been interested in what happened to gainax, but I’ve also been too lazy to look it up myself so this was great. I’m also now looking forward to Uru in Blue if that ever comes out
Alexa, play Komm Susser Tod.

You have (not) been forgotten
I don’t even watch anime and I love all of his videos
Your loss!
profile pic is fitting
kuhpunkt i watched beyblades at one point does that count
You haven't seen Evangelion, so that doesn't count.
@@costbubbles8336 Not as much
Dude your background music is always fire. First Persona, now Sinatra
Isn't this all cowboy bebops music soundtrack?
Bro that's the cowboy bebop soundtrack it's full of jazz
Anno created evangelion because of his depression so in other words depresed people make better pieces of art
I see
This. I don't really like his newer Eva movies because he made it when he no longer depressed and under medication.
GigawingsVideo I understand how you feel about the movies, but one's mental health must come first.
DayJey25 I wouldn’t say that
Hirohiko Araki isn’t depressed
Theres a strange link between depression and art after all, sometimes even their more depressing works end up being their more famous
The editing is so nice. It didn't pay off as much though, but it is quite obvious that a lot of effort and passion went into it. And i'm quite grateful that I am able to see your great 2 weeks worth of editing, as i'm sure many other people are. I'll try my best to show you support and see your channel grow and become better. Have a nice day and always remember to do what will be best for you.
Flcl Remains as one of my favourite anime as well it bring me back too anime too watch more if it wasn’t for Flcl I wouldn’t be who I am as well I can’t wait for Flcl Alternative!^-^
Did you like Progressive? I thought it was pretty lackluster.
Lady Honeybee Yea I know it’ll be different because it’s been like 18 Years but I personally enjoy as its own take of the series
@@lyra3676 I understand why you like it. I'm really interested in Alternative tho. I've seen the trailers and the sub version of episode 1 and it looks really promising.
@Lady Honeybee It was also Dark and rely on drama than comedy.
The new FLCL is just trying to imitate the old one, but the original was too unique and original, that's what FLCL was always about, so I'd much rather see some completely new characters and stories than just Haruko running over some teens and bashing her guitar on their heads again
This is so sad Alexa play Fly Me to The Moon
Man I’ve missed your anime videos for a while, so I’m down with more
The RPG Monger still uploads videos? Awesome
RIP Gainax, for good this time.
I started cry laughing when Komm Susser Tod played
oh my god i just watched one of your old vids and DAMN this one was such a huge leap in quality keep up the good work dude!
the second i saw "GAINAX" i just screamed SEASON 2 YOU KNOW WHAT
Honestly if gainax shut down I just wish those who made shows like gurren lagann panty and stocking among others and left the studio get the rights to them so shows like panty and stocking get a second season also if gainax goes under maybe we will finally get EVA released on Blu-ray in the West because since ADV went under there is no way to it officially without paying a small fortune
It won't.
nah man, scanty and kneesocks is the real deal
@UCM6Il_o4Rzbzi9hCmRsnBmA eh. Panty is my one true Waifu. Even being voiced by Junko doesn't turn me off, and that says a lot because I HATE that bitch, and she's even worse in DR3.
Our studio hired Gainax last year to handle a project, but when test came back, it was very disappointing. Unfortunately they were dropped from being the production studio. This also happened to them with Glitchtech show for Nickelodeon.
Hey Monger, Fun Fact: Yutaka Uemura, who was suppose to succeed Yoshiyuki Sadamoto after he left Gainax, has pointed out in your video, would later go on to direct the anime Punch Line. It is, without doubt, the most Gainax-y anime he has directed so far. Which is ironic because he made it AFTER he left Gainax. You should watch it sometime if you like Gainax style anime, you may like it.
P.S. Yutaka Uemura is directing the 3rd season of FLCL. So technically, FLCL is still being handled within the Gainax family tree.
And Fukushima Gainax just got bought by Kinoshita Group Holdings last week and they changed its name for Gaina so there's one less Gainax lol.
Gaina? Seriously? Also what they going to produce?
Well, since its Fukushima Gainax but with a different name, they'll do the second season of Piano no Mori. also another anime this Winter called Flying Babies. Thats it for now.
Well, I own most Piano no Mori manga so I think it's a good thing to adapt. Flying babies? Interesting.
So that's why evangelion's start and finish seem so different
I'm a little bit surprised that you didn't mention that the only reason End Of Evangelion happened is because of people sending Anno death threats about how the ending wasn't "happy enough."
CallMeFreakFujiko death threats aren't the only reason why End of Evangelion was made. It was the intended ending but Anno was probably a bit pissed off so he added a bit of 'fuck you's to the people who sent him death threats in the movie, which I believe led some people to think that he only made it in response to the death threats.
Do the rise and fall of Konami next.
NewBlueMario1016 Konami never fell?
As long as i know they are still fucking giant
Teamlor After the Kojima case they basically lost an arm and a leg... Although they still can hold themselves with the Bemani games, Yugioh, pachinko and those japanese baseball games (jikkyou powerful pro series, which got adapted to mlb power pros for some years)
True, but i doubt they'll ever die.
They don't fall, they only got acquired by Yakuza
Royal Space Force is one of my favourite films of all time. When I watched it 3 years ago, it felt like I was being taken back to a simpler time in my life.
Holy fuck, an actual anime video from you. You have no idea how long I've been waiting for something like this
A very well organized and concise presentation. Gainax could milk Evangellion for cash with a US release of the Blu Ray set they put out in Japan. That would assume they have solved all their legal disputes around Neon Genesis Evangellion.
I wish they would re-release NGE on dvd/blu ray 😭 Soo annoying that the most easily available version atm is on Netflix with that godawful dub 🤢
I literally have no idea what's going on but your voice is nice so that's okay
Please do videos on more Studios! Would be cool to see ones on Madhouse, Bones and KyoAni
Wow, the autosubs are really accurate on this video. Aside from the word “Gainax.” The suns can’t get that one right.
You better get ready to make an follow up!
Watched to the end. I'm really sad though for Gainax. I really have enjoyed their work and haven't been as big a fan of Trigger or Khara. I really really really want the hinted at Gunbuster 3. And I wish you had explained Gainax' connection to the two new FLCL seasons. With them being sequels to their anime title, shouldn't they have some involvement? Licensing or otherwise?
They stole money from Ano and lied about selling license to him. So they sold rights to another dummy company. They let IG do non sequels alone without Ano which is ruined them.
Well, it's nice to know the history of Gainax... after watching numerous series from them in the past 24 year.
I wouldn't mind seeing more content like this. It's interesting seeing what studios go through.
I gotta say, I found this very interesting. I knew a bit about them, but it was nice to get a more in-depth history on Gainax and all the big influences that were involved in and came out of it. Your usual enthusiastic narrative style also provides some good energy to keep me engaged and continue to watch up to the end. Hope more people will take the time to tune in, and keep up the good work 😺👍
I wouldn't mind learning about anime studios, I'm very intrigued
We often forget, it's the people inside the studio that makes the anime what they are, not the Studio brand/name itself. If the talent that made past legendary animes a reality, it's no surprise the Studio will later fall into ruin, if it isn't able to keep said talent.
More videos like this would be great!
Specifically the part where you talked about Gurren Lagann.
I liked this video. Do more like this if you can. I have been fascinated by Company Man's content lately and this is like that only more anime focused and with an RPG monger twist, which is awesome.
Hears tax fraud, and sees Yoshi.
*sigh* he had to do it, didn't he?
Oh yeah, I seen the entire video, and honestly I wouldn't mind seeing more videos like these. It's like a combination of fandom files and the other videos that don't have a consistent naming convention, but instead its just for (anime) companies. That is, if you can handle doing this on an comfortable rate because my- it seems that this research seems to beat you to a pulp. Don't go overdrive with it, my dude. Oh, lastly, I didn't see the video upload/got a notification when it did. Your post took cared of that for me `°`)/
Uru in Blue has lately been finished by Gaina, another studio that used to be called “Fukushima Gainax,” but now it’s without the X.
gainex was fighting bankruptcy while doing NEG in fact the storyline reflected that and is noticeable with the shift happening midway. the animators barely got paychecks, were stressed out.
that why the middle of the anime and after felt different from the first half.
Would love to see videos like this on other studios! This was very well-presented and entertaining
Definitely make more videos like this. I know these videos getting less views than the fandom ones can be discouraging but this was probably the best video you've made thus far.
Yes! Make more videos like this. I'd say this is your best one yet.
btw Gainax is love Gainax is life
Very insigthful! Thank you Monger! I love your content
Megumi Kouno and Nishigori Atsushi, both animators worked once time in Gainax too (FLCL, Gurren Lagan, Panty and Stockin) And then joined to A1 Pictures for Idolmaster Anime.
It is thanks to them that Idolmaster has 2D dances.
Totally down for more deep dives like this from you, Monger. This was a fun and interesting watch.
dude I LOVE these kinds of videos! it's so interesting to learn about the histories of things you might've never thought too much about or looked too deep into, one of my favorite videos ever on youtube is a 2 hour video done by Lockstin & Gnoggin about the history of the Fire Emblem franchise, I watched it all and loved every second of it! I'd love to see you do more videos like these, I'd definitely watch them!
I wouldn’t by any means be opposed to seeing more content along these lines; it was a really nice video!!
Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water was my favorite show. It even had no “Gainax Ending” cowshit! Everything is complete.
Naquin Green Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water had a better Gainax ending before Evangelion came.
Naquin Green Episodes 12 and 13 destroyed it’s logic. They didn’t like how they’ve faced executive meddling. That’s why the producers went to form their independent branch, Trigger. Then Gainax tried to form Fukushima Gainax, but then FG went and got owned by another company to become Gaina (Gainax without the X). I gotta say that Trigger, Khara, Gaina, and Gonzo are doing great on their own.
Naquin Green I guess that’s why Hideaki Anno wanted to make an Evangelion reboot.
Naquin Green Panty and Stocking had so much potential from the start.
Naquin Green He did Evangelion Rebuild. Evangelion 1.0, 2.0, and 3.0 already came out years ago. 3+1 might come out soon.
thanks for the video and the history of Gainax! I really enjoyed it and would liketo see more of that type of content. Maybe Studio Bones next? ;)
not only made it to the end (nearly 3 years after post), it was this video of yours that made me sub.
Hold on to the fact that you really enjoyed making this and do what you enjoy, I for one loved this video. Amazing job :)
Gainax's story is that of an Eva character's backstory
Honestly, I'd love it if you made more videos about this type of thing. It's really interesting to see what a studio has been through over the years.
great content man, i liked the way you told the story, pretty accurate and entertaining. keep making this type of videos, i know a lot of people will appreciate them
Yes make more. I love learning all these little details that I never knew. Great video! Fascinating!
Gainax entered its apocalyptic phase after Gurren Lagann...only to be reborn as Trigger, Khara & Gaina! The flames are still there!
Good video man, its always interesting to see what goes on behind the scenes at anime studios, or just studios in general tbh
Gainax was always my favorite studio. I remember when funimation channel was on TV and watching the rebuilds of eva movies in the 3rd grade as my first (and favorite anime ever, the series not the movies) it encouraged me to do research on the show which lead to me watching the og show, to learning about the studio itself and watching almost all their other works. It just feels weird with the way they are now
I love these longer formats!
I’ve got to applaud you monger, amazing video best of your work. Please please do more of these I learned a lot
Well...
You told me to tell you I got this far, and if I'd like you to make more content like this. So I am going to just say "Eat child", and end it with a "Yes."
Now, in full, that would be "Eat child yes." No, I did not put a period or a comma in between those to phrases. Yes, you are meant to say it in one breath with no pauses. That is my answer and response to your action of kindly asking your audience/viewer if we/I would like more.
Love me daddy-senpai-sama.
Yes, please!
Pls do more detailed content like this.
Gainax: The stepping stone for directors. Literally.
This was incredibly enlightening! I really enjoyed watching this. Keep up the wonderful work!
I would love to see this kind of content every now and then, I actually watched the entire vid. Great video man 👍
Please keep making content like this! You always manage to keep me entertained in your videos and the information you give out is always so clear and easy to remember, I wish there were more teachers like you so I wouldn't struggle so much on school :,))
this was seriously a good video, please make more
Can you do a video about houseki no kuni?
A video like this every now and then wouldn't hurt
Awesome video man keep up amazing work. 😄
Please do a similar one for Gonzo and Madhouse
It's not the studios, it's always the talented individuals behind the studios. Once said crew are reshuffled or migrated other places, so too does the studio itself change.
The death of the Gainax today wouldn't mean the death of the "Gainax" from a decade ago.
I'd love to see more of this type of content in the future, this video was great! I'm a huge fan of Gainax and Trigger, so I always love hearing from other fans! All of your videos are awesome, so just make what you want to make!
this is one of your best videos!!
yes, i would love to see more of that type of content, really loved the video monger ^^
