One of the great things is that we do have choices now with wigs. I wore wigs for a couple of months, pulling my hair back in a low pony, like you. My decision was a mental thing for me, not so much a comfort thing. Daily, when I would get up and prep my hair for wearing the wig, looking in the mirror would just be depressing. It was a daily reminder of my condition. On my birthday this year, i was going through my "routine" with tears running down my face and I asked myself "Is this hurting me or helping me?" The answer was clearly visible and I took the clippers to my head. I didn't tell my husband or my daughters, I just did it. I can honestly say, I have never regretted it! I love ball caps as well and I still wear them with low density wigs. I don't like wig grips as much because they just give me a headache BUT I found that I really really love wig tape. It doesn't pull my hair, which is about 1/2 in long and it's so secure. Bottom line is, after my ramble, is when pondering the question of whether to cut it all off or not is to ask ourselves the question..."Is it helping us or hurting us" . The answer will lead each of us to a choice. Thank you Denise for such an honest discussion and putting yourself out there to have this talk. So helpful!!

How do you remove the tape, Valerie? I’ve heard alcohol works but that sounds like it might cause a super itchy dry spot on the scalp.

If you're not ever going to wear your own hair in public, then I would go ahead and cut it. I always keep my hair cut about an inch and a half long all over. It's so funny, my hairdresser then salutes me when she gets done. LOL, LOL!! And, I say "yep...high and tight..." LOL!

My mother struggled most of her life with very thin hair..teasing, perms, those very noticable hair pieces ( back when they started out and was not perfected as it is today) I've remember my mother going to a expensive department store in our area called "Hess's.".and there was a discreet section of the ladies department that had a array of Eva Gabor wigs..my mother tried on two wigs... and the instant change in her personality and disposition was unbelievably rewarding...to her and myself..to see a woman change and become so happy...she bought one and wore it..and took the other one home...to change off..they were expensive at that time.and the quality wasn't as good as it is today..that was in the 70's and early 80's..so now here Iam in the same boat..I have that gene..being the only girl too..I've started noticing my hair loss in my 30's..purchased hair extensions way before they were on the scene..even made my own..they only gave me bald spots from the tension..made it worse..however I did love them..but not the headaches!.. they were heavy. . I do have a very sensitive scalp also..and have hair exactly like yours now..and now I wear these wonderful wigs which I adore..I'm also debating on getting a pixie type cut..just to make it easier on myself and my scalp..but like you..I need the little pony to anchor it down..Denise..to every woman our hair is our crown and glory..and when you showed the world your hair...some women do on wig videos and some don't..which is understandable..my heart sinks and I get tears in my eyes for them and you and myself..you are brave and beautiful!!!..👸💕💝💕 thank the lord above we can get this beautiful hair..fake or real...and at any price point..I'm so grateful..and to think of those women who wished they had this hair..mine you..I do still see woman today that struggle..and some who are fine with their hair loss..but I really do think they would love wigs too if they found the right comfortable one..Thank you for your bravery Denise..and your beautiful way..your adorable and beautiful also..🌝💝💕💋🧡👸

Honestly, when I post videos out there I actually forget that people other than my beloved wig sisters might watch them. I just want to help and support my sisters so much.... I'm actually glad that I forget, lol. If I stopped to think that my daughter's friends (many who follow me), people at work (who know I wear wigs and follow me on Instagram no idea if they watch my videos), or other people I know in real life could be watching these it might give me pause.... but my desire to support my wig sisters just over-rides all that. I have wondered about doing that too! We'll see how it is to be bald first. I just started chemo so it won't be long before it falls out and I start wearing wigs. Seems like it might be easier than fixing my own hair sometimes. Or keeping it colored every 4 weeks since I have so much gray coming in. I don't think I am ready to go gray yet but I will see what it looks like when it grows back.

@@heywigsister sorry for my typos. My phone can't spell! I had a tiring week with a migraine for 3 days after the first chemo treatment. So we will see how it goes from here on out. I have chemo every two weeks for now. I am also doing a trial drug that my oncologist recommended to me. Of course you don't know if you are getting it or the placebo. The side effects are Alot of the same. So far I still have hair but it needs to be colored. I am thinking why waste the time and money to color it if it is going to fall out soon. My hair has gotten really thin since I have gotten older. Especially in the front. But I have been able to style it and tease it up some, spray some hairspray and get some lift so it hasn't looked too horrible yet. But now it seems even thinner and I am tired of waiting around for it to all fall out. Wondering if today will be the day.i almost just whacked it off short last night. Just so it won't be so dramatic when it falls out. I have never thought I look good in hats but this spring before I found out I had cancer, I found a couple of ball caps that I actually liked on me. We were on vacation and I pulled my hair back in a pony and left a few tendrils out on the side. My husband said it looked good. So God took care of me even before I knew I had breast cancer.i have been so blessed with angels on earth helping me through this journey. You are one of them Denise! I wanted real reviews from someone who looks normal with similar features or face shape to mine so I could tell how a wig might look on me. Although I am older than you. The other wonderful wig sisters on you tube have helped as well, but they look like models anyway and look good in all wigs! Lol! I needed a real gal and you are it for me. So thank you so much! Your sweet spirit and attitude are refreshing and makes me feel as if we are friends. Not just you tubers. This is such a turn around for me as when I was young, I had super thick hair. My Mom would take me to have it thinned out some. It is fine and wavy so I have had to have layers and texturing to give it some lift. It isn' t curly enough to wear without styling some. I have let it get longer than it has been in awhile but it feels so thin right now.i know I will buzz or shave it when it starts falling out. Just wondering if I should whack it off like a pixie or a bit longer cut until then.
Sorry! I did'n't mean to write a book! For you, I think you still look beautiful even without your wigs on. With it combed back, I think I would be more comfortable with that little bit of hair when I am at home. You could try some longer layers and see what that looks like. Then have your little pony in the back. At least for now. That and the right hairspray can do wonders! People have always thought I had thick hair. Lol! So it does camophlauge some. I would do some minor back combing to get a little lift at the crown. But if your head is sensitive , that might bother you. Just experiment. Try some layers. It will grow back out if you don't like it and you have plenty of wigs!

Hey there! So My hair was very similar to yours a couple of years ago. My main concern was thinning on top and it eventually got so bad that I was always self conscious. I started wearing wigs and kept my hair long but eventually it just seemed silly to NOT buzz it off as I decided that I was never going to go out with my bio hair after discovering wigs. A couple of months ago I did shave my head, leaving it around 1 cm long. I don't advise shaving right down to scalp as you then have to deal with the possibility of ingrown hairs and itchiness, etc. I love my new hair cut. It looks so much better than having the long hair with the thinness on top. My husband has totally become used to it and doesn't mind it all. I now have the choice of wearing no hair (it looks much neater short) or wearing a wig at home.

I buzzed my hair a couple of months ago. Honestly, it has given me more freedom. My husband was fine with it, a couple of my kids were, and a couple weren’t, my grandkids were fine with it. I buzzz again last night, I call it my “caterpillar head” when The grandkids are over, I tell them to rub the top, and they tell me how fuzzy it is. It really helps to have a sense of humor, I know it’s hard for everybody, really hard. But now I can take a shower in a few minutes...I know that if there’s a knock on the door, I can whip on a wig and look fine. To me that’s a big deal! Thank you Denise! Love your wig ‘chats’. It’s so funny, because sometimes I’m not sure who’s going to be in the mirror when I look!

My family doesn't care about my hairloss, but I am just more comfortable wearing something over it even at home (except at bed time)

My heart broke about your hair. It is because it is the same road I traveled most of my life. Some people don't understand, "just wear a wig". True, thank God they have good wigs today which I have worn everyday for about 25 years. My hair is so thin, if I were to put in a low pony to secure the wig, even the kids elastic bands are too big. So I put it in two pin curls. Then one day, I got it buzzed off. I felt my depression over my hair lift. When it gets too long, I can't keep my hands off it, and hair falls out just shaking my head. So I buzz mine off and leave a little bit in front of the ears, and a little bit in the back to make pin curls. Have I accepted this? Yes, but still sad over it all.

You've put into words what I'm thinking also. Like you I've cut my hair to Bob length because I don't need the extra length. It's now Cotton Candy hair. On the other hand I remember in my 20's how short hair was picky when I slept. I find now sleeping is more comfortable with a loose pony. Unlike you my husband is in denial of my balding because it is just now getting obvious! Most of my friends don't have this problem & the few that do have fine short hair & they live in denial. There are 2 of us who are brave enough to wear wigs. When I started wearing wigs quite a few said, "don't say anything no one will know". We all know it makes them feel more comfortable to not say anything. In my circle of friends I'm the trail blazer, so yeah I'm thinking about not a buzz cut but probably just short someday like TAZ has, she just looks so cute cause she has a lot of hair. Ditto me -- I have the same Dx and am thinking of ditching the Rogaine and buzzing it all off (maybe really really short like 1/2 inch)! I'm RIGHT THERE in my thinking. Last time I went to the hairdresser, she talked me out of it, saying that I want to be able to wear my own hair at home (and I've thought about her opinion since then, and decided she's wrong). In the winter, if I do buzz my hair, I'll wear a cap around the house to keep my head warm (I'm looking forward to my first winter with wigs because I know my head's going to be fully covered for a change -- awesome concept!!! My husband will support whatever I decide. The wig grips PULL on my sensitive scalp, and even the Wig Fix hurts a LOT when I pull it off. I get headaches from the wig grips. There's not a lot of stretch with them and it's not like I have a huge head either (22 1/4" circumference). Your video was super-timely for me as I am right NOW thinking over my next step when I go in to the hairdresser (and I'm going to tell her she's wrong if she tells me what I want...and I know this too as a MH professional). Nobody can TELL another person what THEY want. It's personal. As usual, you are spot on Denise! Super-hugs to you for being honest and vulnerable and going there.

Brenda Gregory Yuen I just got my first buzz cut last week. My thought was ‘what took me so long?’ I was hanging on with the excuse of needing a low ponytail to hold down the back. I use It Stays on the lace front and now I dab it where the ponytail would be. I got a pixie cut so it would leave some at the temples for leave out. I’m 63. Wear Ignite with a very short nape. What is it with our sensitive scalps? I never connected my sensitive scalp to my thinning hair until I started making videos and posting in Facebook groups and hearing MANY other women talk about it. Who knew that was a thing? As for your hair dresser... hopefully if you approach it again with her she will leave her opinion out of it and realize that if you are still thinking about it then it is probably the right decision for you. I can see her not wanting you to make a rash decision, but at this point you have had plenty of time to consider. Let me know if you decide to go for it.... good luck!

Yep, I can relate to all of this! My hair is not quite as thin as yours, but it's basically the same thing. It's so weird how the texture of my hair changed to that flossy stuff. I don't think of myself as having a sensitive scalp, but since the texture of my hair changed, oh my, brushing it can really hurt! Sometimes I'd stand there brushing my hair and think with everything I've been through, does it also have to hurt to brush my hair??? I did the same thing you did, just cut mine shorter. I don't especially love the bump the pony tail makes under my wigs, but I'm sure it does keep the back in place. I haven't thought about buzzing my hair off because I don't wear wigs around the house - I wear a headband, and I also feel like I can wear a baseball cap with a pony tail out of the house and be ok. I see a lot of people who have buzzed their hair and they look beautiful, but I don't see myself looking good that way I do wear a topper sometimes, but it has no clip in the front. It's a lace front and I cut bangs in. But I've come to feel more comfortable in wigs these days and I like all the style and color options with wigs that I don't have with toppers.

Oh man, CIndy! No kidding about the pain while brushing with all you've been through. Talk about adding insult to injury!! I agree, I don't love the little pony bump in the back with some wigs. I have been buzzing for a couple years now. I Love It! The only con is not having hair to pull out along the ear tabs for realism, but oh well. I glue my lace fronts down, and I never wear wig grips either. I wear wigs full-time when I leave my home. I don't wear toppers as my loss is advanced, and I am beyond that stage. I decided that if I ever have to be seen in a medical setting or by accident without my wig on, I want a nice uniform look. I think my old man balding head is very embarrassing, and I prefer a uniform look. My husband likes my buzzed head. It is all I wear inside my home with just my kids and husband. I wear bucket hats and sunhats over my wigs on occasion, but I gave up baseball caps a few years ago. They represent sadness to me now since I hid under them for so many years.

    • @heywigsister
      @heywigsister  5 лет назад +1

Oh that is so interesting that baseball caps remind you of hiding. I can totally see that as they were my way of hiding as well. As a matter of fact, when my oldest son (about to turn 20) was in grade school, before I got to know some of the other moms, most of them referred to me as the mom with the baseball cap because unless I was at work, that is how I went everywhere. I am so curious if my husband would hate it as much as he thinks he would... maybe we will find out someday!

This is such a timely topic Denise. Last weekend, after discovering wigs 6 months ago, I cut most of mine off. My hair on top was like yours but curly, and my length was like yours as well. Now I feel that I look very strange when I’m not wearing a wig and am very self-conscious, even at home. Although I work at home, last week I wore a wig every day because I didn’t want to catch a glimpse of myself and be freaked out. I’m sure I’ll get used to it eventually, but as of now I’m a bit remorseful. I don’t miss the ponytail (I kind of like not feeling the bump) and I do wear wig grips (just got a wig fix and love it). I may experiment with It Stays and tape next week. One good thing is it’s super easy to wash and dry my hair now!

    • @heywigsister
      @heywigsister  5 лет назад

Now the washing and drying is what keeps buzzing my hair off on the table as an option- not gonna lie!! I also would love to have the benefit of a baby pony pump in keeping my wigs down but NOT have the bump there, lol.... sometimes that bump is a pain the butt. I would love to know if you do get used to it over time or if you end up growing your hair back. Thank you for sharing!

I love the comfort, coolness and freedom of having a shaved head! don’t know how anyone survives the heat of having bio hair piled up under a wig cap, then a wig on top! I can’t even tolerate a wig cap, I just wear my wig straight on my head. Also it avoids any issues with wisps of bio hair poking out that may not match. It is a bold step but I bet not many people go back after feeling how good it is, if you are happy with wigs and have no possibility of having bio hair that would look the way you want.

I didn’t give much thought to it....so when I was with family and friends just hanging around the house, or wanted to swim...it felt awkward. I wear the one piece scarves and covers, but really wish I had just kept enough for a little pony like yours.I have let it grow a couple inches but it still itches under a wig and in scarves, maybe a little worse, in my case. How timely! My hair was cut extremely short to less than an inch all over Thursday including trimming around my ears. The front hair line is shot. I do genealogy and have maternal photographs going back to my ggg grandmothers. There’s a family reunion shot as my PC background. So there it was, documented evidence, this is partially hereditary. It’s also partially autoimmune (diagnosed) and the stress of last year. I haven’t been to a dermatologist nor do I intend to go. I’m working with three physicians including an endocrinologist so I don’t see the benefit. I had my hair cut because I couldn’t stand the stringy, gappy feel when I shampoo and I just wanted/needed it out of the way. The regrowth from the last shed was inconsistent in length and texture so I was using 5 to 6 clips to pull the long pieces out of the way causing headaches. For me, cutting was the best thing to do.

There are some days I still feel self- conscious, like when I wear a wig that is completely different than my typical (which I have to do if I am going to be able to give good reviews), or when I go into a new situation where people don't now I wear wigs. I have extreme thinning at the front and patchy thinning around the crown, same reason as yours. I do buzz my whole head to about 1/2 inch, leaving about 2-3 inches temples-to-ear for blending. I always use a Wig Grip, and have found 1/2 inch gives it enough to grab and hold tight. I wear wigs every waking hour, even at home. They're comfortable, I'm so used to them, and feel most my best self with hair on. So, that's the one "con" of buzzing off all my hair - my appearance without hair is somewhat uncomfortable to me. Certainly not self-hatred or drama, but I am reliant on wigs - or at minimum a wide stretchy headband (and that only EVER at home!) - to feel my best. Seeing yourself with no hair is stark, so buzzing it off may mean a real commitment to constant head covering!

Thank you for sharing! You know, I pretty much constantly cover my head anyway so from that aspect it would be no different. It would probably make it easier in a lot of ways. Great vid, Denise covering a very relevant topic. Each of my 5 children was a cesarean surgery, followed by. Hysterectomy, 3 hernia repairs, gall bladder removal (and a partridge in a pear tree 🌳). Each surgery my hair thinned from stresses of surgery and anesthesia. . Add to this my heritage factors and last year I gave up on toppix fibers. The mess, the expense etc. I’m very grateful to those wig sisters that have educated me and helped me accept them thrive wearing wigs full time for 15 months. I love my little bun for security, walk my pup wearing my ball cap and have a tiny 12” ear to ear issue so I need a wig grip. I did shave my nap when I went through pixie wigs and found I was too lazy to keep it up so it grew back and was so itchy and annoying stubble to this day. Why would I shave my head to have stubble to manage?? Just gonna deal with my thin straggly hair and keep those wigs!!

I sure hope I don't wind up with lung disease from it.... when I would blow my nose after getting ready in the morning there would be fibers in the tissue. EWWW.

Thank you Denise for sharing this very personal journey with us. I cut all my hair off very close to my head. It is so thin and so many bald spots due to lupus, I just couldn’t look at it anymore. I didn’t tell anyone I was going to do it. I never let anyone see me without a wig. Even my husband. It’s just too humiliating for me. My biggest fear is an emergency happening and my wig falls off or they take it off.

    • @heywigsister
      @heywigsister  5 лет назад +4

Oh gosh... first of all dealing with Lupus which is so difficult and then hair loss. Double crappy whammy. Big hugs for that. I have Rheumatoid Arthritis so I totally get it. Living in fear of someone seeing you without a wig is no picnic I'm sure. I wish there was something I could say or do to help you with that, because solving your thinning problem with wigs only solves part of the overall problem. This may be a really crude analogy, but it is the only one I've got so I'll share it. It is kind of my like my fear of pooping while pushing during child birth. For some reason I was really worried about that before I had my daughter (my VBAC, my 2 boys were both c-sections and she was in the middle). I remember I was in a pregnant moms online support group and that was a fear for a lot of us. Seasoned moms who had given birth before assured us that you do not care at all in the moment, and that most women do poop a little and the docs are totally used to it. Well... they were all right. I am pretty sure I did while pushing because I felt the doc wiping something away every now and then, but you know what.... I didn't care in the least. If there is ever an emergency that involves your wig coming off, chances are, you won't care either and it is probably not going to be shocking for anyone involved. I hope that wasn't too gross or crude of an example, but it sure seems to be a similar type of fear to me. Big hugs and lots of love!

Thank you, Girl for this video. I never thought about the little pony helping to hold wigs down so I learned a good trick. My hair is almost identical to yours. I hate to look at it ever. LOL! I started out with clip in toppers and clip in SoHo hair and it just pulled on me and made balds spots and so I went to wigs pretty quickly (but not before I had spent a small fortune in every kind of hair they had), Not to mention that when my hair does grow at the front It is coming in white and I have to deal with that. Insulting! I never got out without a wig and I wear a wig at home all the time unless in P'j's and then I have knitted cute slochy hats to match my pj's and wear those. I never show my hair if possible. So I have the bottom hair and can dcver the top balding hair. So, for that reason I'm not ready to buzz...but, I have thought about it quite a bit! I know my situation is different because I don't have noticeable hair loss, just super thin horrible hair that will not hold a style and always looks terrible. My daughter though does have hair loss so for a while, she had buzzed hair and I didn't. It was always so much easier for her to throw her hair on and go and I finally got the courage to buzz mine. OMG, I so wish I would have done it sooner. I thought I was one of those that needed that little pony tail in the back to keep my wig down and losing that was my biggest fear but it turns out I didn't. I don't wear a wig grip or anything now. I did keep the sides longer to blend in the first time I buzzed it. When I started letting it grow out it drove me crazy and I ended up buzzing the whole thing the next time, even the sides. That also worked so good because I still had a little sideburn hair there that would blend in with my wigs. I've let my hair go gray since I started wearing wigs, and all I do is put a little root powder on the sides to match whatever wig I'm wearing and it works great. My husband didn't really want me to buzz my hair but now that I've done it, he says I should just wear it super short, he grew to like it 😉 but I'm not that brave yet. P.S. I never wore ball caps or any kind of hat until I buzzed my hair because I didn't like how my hair looked with them. Now I have about 10 that I keep in a drawer by my front door and I throw one on to check the mailbox, take out the trash or walk next door to my dad's house 😊

I had "beautiful hair". Over the past two years. My hair has been shedding, thinning and receding. I started looking at wigs. I bought the Dirctor's Pick. It does not look good. It seems to be clumpy. I tried all the suggestions, like shaking it out., combing through with wide tooth comb or finger fluffing. The top falls forward. I'm trying to work with it. I won't give up! My hair loss is exactly like yours. My hair is buzzed (by me). I leave sideburns to blend with the short and petite wigs I wear ( Jon Renau Natalie, Gabrielle, simplicity, Tova and Cody by Amore). I love love love the buzzed hair and my husband loves touching my head (which I didn't like him touching in my Toppik days). BTW I never wear wigs at home when my family is at home. I walk around with a soft hat. Same thing when my kids are hanging out with their friends at our house (they all know I am wearing wigs). I also exercise with a hat.

I love that your husband loves touching it!! I wonder if mine would? I do not miss the Toppik days in any way, shape, or form. So glad to be done with that. Most of my daughter's friends follow me on Instagram and here on RUclips so they obviously know, and the moms I've friends on FB with do if they ever see my posts. My son is a 7th grader and I'm pretty sure none of his friends know, and I am only friends with a few of the moms from his class so it is much more of a "secret" with them. I only wear wigs at home if I am going somewhere or if I have been somewhere and just haven't taken it off. Otherwise, I usually wear a baseball cap or bandanna. My family honestly accepts whatever I choose to do.

My hair had always been fine and soft as cotton, when I was young it was silly and I had more of it, so I managed to make it look ok, but it never looked great. I have a high forehead to boot, so when I started to loose hair due to androgenic alopecia, i found it harder and harder to hide what looked like a receding hairline, so turned to wigs. That was 3 years ago and since then, my biohair has grown longer than I have seen it since I was 10 years old. It looks and feels fuller too. The wig wearing has protected my own hair, I no long need to wash it day ly to give it some lift, I no longer color ( it's the first time since age 12, I can actually see my true color) I don't constantly comb and brush, or curl, or use products , so my hair is no in a natural state and just so much healthier. I just comb it back, give it a twist and clip it up, and I use a soft wig grip to keep the wig from tugging on my hair and to keep the wig from sliding off. I mention all this, because you might want to keep your hair, because you might be surprised what a few years of wig wearing can do.

I love not having to do that anymore. :)

I used to think I was the only one who struggled with this the way I was. No one I knew in real life had the problems I had with their hair. Sure I would see women out in public with extremely thin hair on the top, but for some reason they were able to go out in public and I just wasn't and I couldn't figure that out. It did not help that my brother and sister had THICK curly hair while I had thin, fine straight hair. If you ever do buzz it off let me know how it goes! I'm sure I will keep it in the back of my mind as an option if I ever get sick of dealing with it.

My hair is very similar to yours. I keep mine cut and colored as I like the low pony for my wig as well. Sometimes you can see my hair on the sides so it just blends with my wig. Also I do not wear wigs while being intimate with my husband. So I think I would feel not so attractive with a buzz cut. Hope that’s not TMI but that it also makes sense. Keep making informative and helpful videos!

Three months ago, I cut my hair super short. Buzzed off basically. I have very similar hairloss as you do. I knew that my husband would be upset. I just knew that I had to do it and it has really helped me with wearing wigs. I asked hubby to help me clip it off. He did, but he wasn't happy. I am so glad that I did it. No more tucking hair or worrying about it escaping under my wigs. I have only been wearing wigs since April 2019. I was so sick and tired of the scraggly wisps of hair on my head. I never left the house without a wig or a cap. Now, I can wear my "hair" more comfortably. As for the baseball cap, I had such thin hair hanging down that it was an embarrassment. So, if I want to wear a cap, I am going to try the halos. Everyone had to come to their own "line in the sand", meaning enough is enough and they are over their own hair. I am there already.

I believe my hair loss pattern is just like yours. Except that the back will not grow more than a few inches. The last time I got my hair cut at my wig salon, about 6 years ago, I was charged $65 to trim it short for the purpose of wearing under my wig. I was mad that I was buying my wigs from this shop & the hairdresser charged me to trim my hair. So now I just do it myself. I also color my hair myself because it is mostly gray & I am not ready to be gray! I could choose to just buzz cut it but for me, that is just not how I see myself. There is absolutely nothing attractive or redeeming about this choppy mess on top of my head. Even so, I think it would be more damaging to my psyche to buzz it all off. And I do like the longer side-burn area to blend in with the wig. We each need to do whatever makes us the most comfortable with this situation we find ourselves in. God Bless you as you keep bravely reaching out to your wig sisters.

Hi Denise you're so right each one of us feels differently. To cut or not to cut? For many years I wore my hair long until I reached my late forties. It was then I noticed how thin my hair was so decided to cut it short. Unfortunately this didn't disguise the continual thinning for long and like you after every potion, pill and prayer sort to wearing wigs Dec 2018. For a while I let my bio hair grow under the wig also giving me a baby pony tail for the wig to anchor on, but I also wore a wig cap. Our weather here in South Africa is always on the warm side with high temps in summer, so I felt I was 'overheating'. I then decided to cut my hair very much like Taz. I wear a grip for more security and it has worked out so well for me. I think we all find what's works for eventually. Stay well xx

Thank you for sharing! Even though our weather isn't quite that hot (we get really hot in the summer here in Minnesota, but from about late Sept-early March it just gets colder and colder), I am always hot. I do think it would help to have shorter hair for that reason. I also wonder if overall I would be more comfortable without hair moving around so much under the wig. I'll keep considering! :)

This is such a personal choice, and a subject I'm sure many women are glad you've brought up. I wear wigs every day and the only time my family sees my bio hair is in the evening before bed and in the morning before I get ready for the day. My thinning and receding bio hair has been a short, asymmetrical style for years. I still get it colored every now and then to be able to pull out bangs and sides to blend with my wigs. I dislike my own hair so much that I tell my stylist to just dry it and I plop my wig back on before I leave. She's a good friend and understands I've transitioned to just "maintenance" on my bio hair to work with my wigs. I've been a blonde most of my life, although I'd be mostly gray now if I stopped coloring it. I keep it cut short because that is what I'm comfortable with. You look cute in a ball cap, Denise! Thanks for sharing your story!

I’ve always had short hair so when I started wearing wigs a wig grip made me feel secure. I buzzed my hair this summer because wearing a wig was so hot. I still go back and forth with keeping it buzzed or not. If I had long hair I think wearing a baseball cap with a pony would be a nice way to wear it. When I wear a baseball cap now I feel like I’m bald so I wear a sun hat , it doesn’t look so bad. It’s also nice not spending money on salon services because I don’t color my hair anymore. The money I save of course goes to buying wigs lol. You have to do what feels right for you and there is no judgement here with wig sisters. Just do YOU!

My hair is basically the same density as yours. I chose to buzz mine 3 days ago. I'm pretty sure if I had ASKED my husband if I should, he probably would have said, no. But I just TOLD him I was going to and he offered to do it for me. Would he rather I have hair, I'm sure, but so would I. I just don't seem to have a choice and he doesn't even seem phased by it now. So far, I'm still wearing a wig to work. I've ordered 2 beanie caps for winter that should come today! I've done toppers but eventually they either hurt or cause more bald spots. The wigs LOOK wonderful, but here it is, 11:41 am and my head around my ears is extremely agitated, which makes ME agitated! LOL... I've done the wig caps, grips blobbity , blobbity blah... I have a super sensitive head! My buzzed head doesn't have the lovely shape that a lot of other women have, but I'm SO TIRED of thinking about my hair all the time! To be rid of it, for now anyway, feels fantastic! I keep telling myself, "I am NOT my hair!" Hopefully, I'll be convinced of that soon! I'm 57 years old, I should be thinking about things that really matter! Thanks for the video!

Sometimes they look awesome and are comfortable and I pretty much forget I'm wearing them, and then there are days the same wig I loved everything about looks wiggy and is super annoying and uncomfortable. Even on those days a wig is my best option and that can be a pain. I totally understand.

Hello Denise! Thank you for sharing this, and all your tips and everything you've learned on your journey! I have frontal fibrosing alopecia, so I've lost about 3-4 fingers worth of hair along the front and sides. I started losing hair (and my eyebrows) just over ten years ago, shortly before my 40th birthday. It has been a slow process. I have a great half a head of hair! But boy, do I have sideburn envy. I had to laugh a little when you showed how you do your headband wigs, without the headband, that's what my hair looks like (but very straight and rather fine). At first I wore a short haircut with heavy bangs pulled forward, that worked for a while though wind was an issue. I tried a clip-in bang, but could not find a color that was close enough to my hair color. Finally, I got a wig, and started wearing that to work (to be clear, I think I got about six wigs, before I found the one I really liked). Then I buzzed my head because my hairline was receding and decided I should get used to me without hair. Oof. It did make wearing the wig easier. And it felt really different in the shower! But then it grew out a little, I got tired of wearing the wig (now I was on to my second wig, same make and cut in a different color), and just started wearing a thick headband and called that good enough for a few years. Now, I'm working for a federal organization, and needed a photo without a headband for my id. So I'm back to wearing wigs, but I've kept my hair to tie back into a ponytail with a headband when I run. I just can't imagine running in Florida with a wig. So that's what works for me now. I'm still learning things from you, so thank you again for sharing everything you do! You are beautiful!

I'm just starting my wig journey. I have hair loss due to hormones and stress. I was a fulltime caregiver to my mom with dementia and she passed away this past March. My hair has always been on the finer side, but when my hormones went crazy and my stress went through the roof, it started falling out. The hair on my scalp seems to be thicker than the length and the length is like that "cotton candy" texture, all frizzy and thin. I've thought about buzzing my hair off, but that would mean I'd have to be all in wearing my wigs pretty much all the time and I haven't gotten to that point yet. Maybe one day I'll get there, but I'm not there yet!

Hi Denise - new subscriber here. Love your videos! Thanks so much for addressing this and love reading the comments as well. I'm in the same boat with AA (and PCOS) and thinning since my 20s as well - very much like yours. I've been considering buzzing mine off as well, but the point about securing with a pony is a good one. And I have a pretty flat head, lol - so the wigs I have tried seem to slip - and the wig grip rode up due to my flatter head, too. So I'm still making do with hair fibers but I'm about ready to try wigs again. Maybe this time will be successful. I was going to ask if you have any videos showing how you secure your wigs with the ponytail - but I just realized you cover that in your It Stays video. Which I'm gonna go watch right now! :) Btw, I think you're beautiful and would look great with a buzz cut as well, if you ever decide to do it. Have you ever tried PRP (platelet rich plasma) scalp injections? I'll be trying it as soon as I can. If that doesn't work out, SMP (scalp micropigmentation) would be the next thing. That can work great even with long hair, depending on where the thinning is and if it's not too advanced. If it is advanced then it works best with shaved or buzzed hair. Can really give a nice illusion of a full head of hair and look cute enough to comfortably go out without a wig or a hat.
But before any of that, have you ever consulted an endocrinologist? There are a lot of nutritional and hormonal things that can cause hair loss, but you mention having thinning eyebrows at the ends, and that's one of the classic symptoms of hypothyroidism (autoimmune hypothyroidism for some), which can definitely cause hair loss. Androgenic alopecia seems to often be just a quick and easy diagnosis from those who are not in the business of checking hormones or nutritional deficiencies, even possible pituitary tumors or liver function...

    • @heywigsister
      @heywigsister  2 года назад +2

Hi! Thanks for the suggestions. I see an endocrinologist regularly for my autoimmune thyroid disease, and I've also seen both a scalp specialist and a regular dermatologist. I went through various treatments years ago and while some helped a little, all of them had to be continued to see any benefit and they were so expensive and time consuming... way more than wigs. I'm content now at almost 50 years old (in less than 1 month) to wear wigs and move on from my hairloss. Praying that you get the benefit you seek and you find something that works!!

I usually use some hair gel but it does gum up some wigs. Due to my super fine bio hair, wigs tend to slide back for me without it. Do you use anything to prevent slippage? I heard you say you don’t like grips either.

The thing that occurs to me is to find a wig salon in your area and take your wig in with you and let them help you find the right solution for you. That's one idea that comes to mind. Could be your wig isn't cinched in enough or it's not sitting well on your head. I found holding the ear tabs and walking it forward, towards my eyes makes the wig more secure in back...let us know what you end up doing :) #hugs

Thanks Denise for sharing your thoughts with us. My hair loss is very similar to yours at the top & front but I currently have quite a long pony tail at the back. Lately I've thought about buzzing it too. But I quite like my long pony tail showing under my sports caps which I just about live in these days. It's when I can't wear my caps that I feel most self conscious about my hair loss. I tried a couple of wigs but due to my petite head size they just didn't fit properly and so I gave up on that option. Might try them again in the future. 😁😁❤️💛

Hi, Liz. Some wigs run really big... but some are better. I would consider trying petite size wigs (I know Jon Renau sells some) or some of the styles that run smaller like Ellen Wille or Belle Madame. Here is a great list of major wigs and how they tend to run: cysterwigs.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/115007233027-General-fit-guidelines-for-AVERAGE-cap-wigs-per-brand

About 1 year ago I decided to buzz all my bio hair off because the hair pulling from my ponytail was uncomfortable. My hair was short in the back and around the ears and about 1-3 inches on the sides and top. I do keep the front longer about 5” or so because I always leave hair out from ear to ear. However, I have always had to wear a wig grip. I did get headaches then I tried the wig grip cap and that helped. It’s too hot to wear in the summer though. Buzzing your hair off does take an emotional toll because I think the hair loss looks more noticeable and when my hair grows out a little it looks crazy. I’ve been thinking about growing it out to see if there is anyway of going out without a wig all the time, like even to the mailbox or something. It’s not looking very promising though so I might just keep buzzing my hair for the sake of comfort. The funny thing is when I was in college I used to have a pixie cut but this is so very different. I don’t know, I’m still waiting for a miracle but it’s kind of hopeless.

How long have you been experiencing hairloss? I had a real hopeless feeling for many many years before I discovered wigs because I just wasn't sure what I was going to do when I could not hide it anymore. I had given up a long time ago the thought of ever being able to grow my hair back, which is why I think that hopeless feeling has left me now that I have wigs. Do I wish I didn't have to wear wigs everyday to go out of the house looking presentable? Sometimes, but for me that struggle has been going on FOR SO LONG that the ease and convenience of just throwing on a wig has been such a blessing on a journey I thought was going to end in me half bald with no options. BIG BIG HUGS to you for your journey. You are NOT alone in this.

Denise Sheets thank you so much for having the courage to share your story with us. It is a relief knowing that I am not the only one because sometimes it really feels like it! My hair loss is hereditary. My mom, my grandma, my aunt have suffered. I started having thinning hair in my early 20s maybe even before and it just kept progressing (I’m in my late late 30s now). About five years ago I wanted to try to cover up my hair loss with toppers, and I also tried getting a weave because I saw my aunt wearing it. Btw I am white, but if you have the right hairstylist it can be done. However, that really damaged my hair to no return and I have been wearing wigs ever since.
I get really hot under my wigs and the type of work I do doesn’t really help. I won’t dare step outside without my wig either except if I’m gardening at home and I wear a baseball cap.
Sometimes I wish I would have never gotten a weave or worn a wig and just kept concealing my hair loss and eventually just went bald naturally. Just like many women in my family.
I am always hoping that they will finally release a treatment that works, there’s a lot of research but nothing available to the public so far.
I have tried a lot of things, I have even had a hair transplant! I’ve even considered getting micro-pigmentation but I think it won’t look good especially since I have a lot of hair loss in the front.
So I will continue to wear my fabulous hair. But I don’t know if I will ever learn to accept it. Maybe in time it will grow on me 😃

At one point I was considering a hair transplant as well... well, that's not quite right. I was praying for the money to afford one, knowing that was never going to happen. I honestly have learned to accept it, and am truly grateful for wigs (and that my husband doesn't give 2 hoots about my hairloss).

You know, I wonder when someone crosses over the line of having enough hair to not enough? There are days I think I have plenty of hair for my little pony with a baseball cap, and then there are days when that little pony looks so sad I just want to cut it all off. I guess our journeys are unique just like we are. Thanks for watching!

Denise Sheets it’s really strange but I do have enough to do certain styles with, but it takes me a long time to get it to look the way I want it to. Sometimes it’s easier to fix than others I do wear toppers, it’s just easier and quicker especially when I have to hit the road running.

You’re lucky that you look really good with your hair back with no bangs, I don’t, When you first were talking I even thought your hair bio hair looked good. I then saw what you were talking about when you showed your hair loss when you pulled it apart. I’ve never considered shaving my hair off, but I never go out without a wig or a topper. I can’t wear toppers for long because the clips hurt me because my hair is so thin on top. People who have a normal amount of hair don’t understand what we go through not having what they have, I like to wear baseball caps also because it hides how thin my hair is on top. A neighbor asked me why I always wore a baseball cap, so I made sure to wear a wig or topper the next time I saw her. I don’t know if she knew it was fake hair but she didn’t say anything.

    • @heywigsister

Hi, Chris! It always strikes me as odd when people ask questions like "why do you always wear a baseball cap"... really? Why do you care? I was asked that SAME question multiple times, and learned that people would talk about it behind my back. Oh well.... what can you do. I experienced that same issues with the clips which is why toppers never worked for me. I am so glad I buzzed all my hair off (about 9 months after I made this video).... It has been 18 months since I buzzed it now and I have no regrets.... now that is not to say there have not been a few trade offs, but they are more than worth it to me and I don't anticipate ever growing my hair back out. HUGS to you on your own journey with this!!

Gosh, you are so lovely...I'm not saying this in a dismissive "such a pretty face..." way - but a lovely complexion like yours (when i heard: "oldest child at 27" I was dumbstruck because you look 25 :[) is uncommon in atypical andronergic alopecia.
As I'm sure you know, the term andronergic refers to elevated levels of androgen and the presumption is that female baldness stems from that. The biopsies are performed to rule out dysplasia and malignancy. The andronergic alopecia diagnosis is therefore made by default...and I rather think you were misdiagnosed out of that clinical laziness the medical field reserves for women.
I'm not an endocrinologist but Ive been sick since birth and bald since my twenties (like you) and I've been living with debilitating disease for the last 25yrs.
Any woman with enough androgen in her system to cause baldness would exhibit other signs; - lots of facial hair, acne and acne scarring. back hair...basic hirsutism.
A woman whose body produced excessive androgens could be dead sexy, alluring and attractive as heck, but she would not be a rosy hued , clear skinned, curvaceous ideal of feminine beauty
Postpartum hair loss is due to the dramatic drop in progesterone and estrogen. It's sadly ironic, but a truly andronergic woman would probably NOT lose much hair post-partum...assuming she could conceive in the first place.
And before anyone gets upset about these apparent generalizations and polarities of the female form, please know that the andronergic woman I described doesn't exist - that's an over simplification but the subject of true female androgyny and biologically charged gender fusterclucks in general (a field of study I have been plowing, so to speak, for decades) holds little wisdom or remedy for the scores of women who suffer daily from hair loss with no help from the medical community (and none forthcoming) and no sustainable options, Science should be ashamed of its chauvinism. We aren't weeping in front of our mirrors out of wounded vanity, we're weeping for our lost identities.
The next time you want to cry, try feeling angry about the blatant misogyny in the scientific community - a community that, until less than a decade ago, tested every ovarian and breast cancer chemotherapeutic drug on MEN exclusively. Why? Women have never been used in drug trials - we were considered systemically unstable; too bio-variable, too much work...it took a supreme court ruling - a federal "DUH..." to overturn this ludicrous practice. I took birth control pills in the 1970s and I don't even want to think about whom or what those were tested on...
If you're still not convinced about how little we matter, think about this statistic; the number of men with erectile dysfunction versus the number of inorgasmic women. It's a staggeringly wide chasm, but where's our viagra? And now wives who just want to read a book are married to 73yr old men who would otherwise be reading alongside them but for the fact that they can get a boner from a bottle, And post-menopausal women no longer lubricate naturally - she risks pain, tearing, anger and boredom.
But women are online now, drawing strength from shared experience, change will come. Hopefully my granddaughters won't suffer as we do.

Hi Denise, I have PCOS and have lost a lot of hair on the top of my head and a little in the back as well. For summer I buzzed the back and the sides completely off in order to stay cool since I don't wear wigs when I am at home but kept the front of my hair unbuzzed but in a short boys cut. I am thinking of clipping the front down too but I wont lie I am scared to because my scalp is so sensitive that I am afraid that the wigs might start irritating it worse than they already do. My head is flat in the back so wig caps are not an option for me as they slip right off and toppers wont work because the clips hurt my scalp worse than the wigs do. Oh well it could be way worse so I wont complain. Take care and God bless you and your family in Jesus' name.

+Denise Sheets Thanks for the advice Denise, I will shave the top down and give It Stays a try. My scalp is so sensitive that even if I find a standard capped wig with a style that I like, I can't wear it because it will cause my scalp to break out in an itchy rash that hurts. Only one with a full mono top is tolerable. I can wear RW lace front wigs without much irritation but not ones by Jon Renau. I heard Headline It wig liners work for sensitive scalps too so I think I will give them a try as well. Wish me luck! XD

I have a lot less hair on top than you. I don’t buzz my hair for the exact same reasons as you. I like to blend the sides with my wig and use the back hairs to blend into a ponytail. At this point I have no intention of buzzing my head.
