  • While Mary Poppins Returns was a hit with critics, some of it missed the mark on what made the 1964 original so special. So what if this modern sequel had stayed closer to the Disney classic? Doug Walker deconstructs, then rebuilds the Emily Blunt led continuation of the Julie Andrews masterpiece.

If I were to make this movie, I'd keep Doug's ideas, but have the all three kids and have their personalities more similar to the Darling Children or Alvin and The Chipmunks. For example, with Annabelle being the Alvin: trouble-making, sneaky, quick-tempered but really artistic, clever, humorous, creative and ultimately good-hearted and loyal to her family, with the mother's death being the _hardest_ on her and her drawings and stories were something her and her mother bonded over and with the mom's death, Annabelle doesn't want to draw and create stories because it reminds her of how her mom is no longer around and uses pranks and insults as her creative outlet until closer to the end of the movie. The older boy (I forgot his name) as the Simon/John Darling: straight-laced (but loosens up as the movie progresses), pretends to be a sophisticated adult (also loosens up as the movie progresses), a bit of a know-it-all, tends to 'parent' Annabelle and Georgie to Annabelle's annoyance, but polite, intelligent, kind-hearted watches out for his siblings and tries to keep his family together. And finally Georgie as the Theodore/Michael Darling: imaginative, sweet, naive, confused about the family situation but sensitive to them, and adores his sister's stories and drawings. That way you have the kids, but their personalities are _much more_ than just 'older boy', 'younger boy' and 'girl'. It might sound hypocritical seeing how I drew inspirations from 2 fictional sets of siblings , but that was just to give an example of how they would act if I were to make this movie.

I honestly like this idea, and I hope Disney has a look at it even though they will never use it specifically. One thing I like about the movie and your version is Michael's grief. From what I've heard, one major difference between Traver's stories and the original movie was that she portrayed Mr. Banks as being more depressed than grumpy. I think they may have used that idea for Michael's character.

Not bad. In my opinion, I would've removed the bad guy entirely and not include any climax in the sequel and just have it end with the house closure but with some hope in the future, smilier to your ending. Bathtub Sequence - Nursery Clean Up
    Ceramic Bowl - Pavement Picture
Rotating repair shop - Tea Party on the ceiling
Bank visit and subsequent chase - Toppins Riot
Lamp Lighter Dance - Chimney Sweep Rooftop Dance
Evil Bank Villain Comeuppance - Evil Bank Villain becomes jolly
    Floating Balloons - Flying Kites
Don't get me wrong, they gave it the old college try in replicating the spirit of the original but made the mistake of copying it beat for beat.

Can I just geek out for a moment and talk about how much I LOVE the idea of Poppins, Jack & Anabelle singing A Cover is Not the Book while jumping into different books/drawings/paintings/etc. while changing into different art styles???
Like, they could hop into the books where the stories Jack and Poppins were telling in the song were from then dance in the illustrations or even play with the text, they could go into a pencil drawing and animate it in a similar style as the Paperman short (Gotta bring up Paperman again cuz Disney achieved something amazing with its Meander software but hardly ever used it ever since and I'm still not over it >:( ), go into a chalk drawing that Anabelle maybe drew in the walls and reference Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious/It's a Jolly Holiday, maybe even hop into an abstract painting and see some weird shit with moving shapes?? Idk just brainstorming at this point????? And it would end with all the illustrations joining them in the bowl for the song's finale.
Idk man just.. Just the amount of potential and visual splendor this scene could've had if Disney actually did something similarly ambitious as that!

Is it bad that Critic's version, or Doug's, actually almost made me cry? Like we could have had the star's thing, or have a much more interesting kid character? Or actual consequences? Like, this could have been a better and mature film.
Also, if we're going for the newsies idea, have Michael's co-workers be someone from a Newsies Broadway production. Have someone like Jeremy Jordan or Ben Fankhauser give a cameo as a clever reference, similar to the chimney sweeps in Enchanted

I agree with u as well it's just that Doug loves the original Mary Poppins and that he knows his movie facts and that the chase scene feels like a back to the future chase
but I did love the chase scene as well and the wolf shamus Clyde and the badger and weasel were all my favorite characters.

In your NC review, you said that one of the biggest problems with the movie was that it had a lot of great ideas that it just never fully follows through on. If this is what following through on those ideas would've given us, then sign me the f*ck up.
I actually really liked the movie we got, but it is a little sad to see what it could have been.

  • @Top5Darkest

I hold the original movie Mary Poppins close to my heart. It was the first musical I watched as a kid, reason why I started playing piano and wanted to create my own musicals. Watched it loads with my grandma, to the point where I played ‘Feed the Birds’ on Piano for her funeral.
I was very nervous but excited to the chance for Disney to create a sequel. When the movie started I was really hoping it was going down the idea of dealing with grief and death, bringing new challenges to screen. Then they pretty much threw out that idea. Made a villain and straight out copied the rhythm of the movie but made it with less passion, making a sort of Reboot/Sequel?
I was of course very upset with the choices they made with the sequel. Like Doug said in his review, I just couldn’t believe how empty it felt considering this is the same studio that made the original.
No hate to anyone who loved it! That's completely fine :) just to me, it was rather empty.
I like the ideas here in this video. I think another thing I would add, I would also possibly switch the roles so we’re following Jane as a single parent, rather than Michael. Only because we never see a father who dies and a single mother in Disney, I think that could of created some new ideas we haven’t seen Disney done before.
    Great Video!

This is definitely an improvement over the film we got; the Banks family actually losing the house for good would have been far more emotionally resonant. Doug would make a good script-doctor. But even with that said, I just don't think any sequel should ever have been made at all. I don't think any idea would ever have truly worked.

  • @Hraefncin
    @Hraefncin 5 лет назад +3

Wow . . . YES! So good. Absolutely everything about Mary Poppins and Annabelle, yes! but I would change the Michael plot: afterall, remember that Michael went into the chalk and he was the one with the tuppence who wanted to feed the birds. So, maybe it becomes a Hook thing, where he needs to be reminded of the magic.
There's a conversation between Michael and Jane, after they hire MP, where Jane asks Michael if he remembers all their adventures with MP, and he describes a very happy but non-magical memory. See, instead of Michael being such a stereotypical grieving widower, he's actually trying to recapture that very magic but he no longer believes in magic because "his magic died". He wants to believe Annabelle, but he can't because he doesn't believe in happy endings anymore. Yes, it's because he's grown up, but it's also because he met someone who was "supercalifragilisticexpialidotious"... and she's gone.
So, when he moves to Jane's, and finally is brought back to life along with Annabelle, there's a scene where he confronts MP and says "it's all real, isn't it?" MP of course doesn't say yes, but brings Michael back to the Feed the Birds song (yes, that song, Walt Disney's favorite song, one of the most heartwarming and, at the same time, heartbreaking songs of all time, should be in any sequel to MP). And in that moment, we see Michael see his dead wife--we don't see her, we just see him, seeing her, saying goodbye.
Just like NC says about not being sure if the talent scout is Burt or not, we shouldn't be sure if what Michael sees is really literally magic or memories or imagination--cuz that's it: it's all of those things. That doesn't mean that NC's ending needs any changing, it's just that Michael experiencing MP and Feed the Birds and magic need to be a part of Michael's redemption, as it was with George Banks. It's not only "a change of attitude" but, also, just a smidge of magic.

Actually, your version sounds a lot better. It's a more mature version of Mary Poppins Returns.
