I believe game saves should be cross-platform, allowing players to pick up where they left off regardless of the device or platform being used. I'm willing to purchase a game on multiple platforms - PC, PS5, Steam Deck, Switch, and Xbox - as long as my progress is synced across devices. This would be a great feature for Microsoft to adopt, especially under its 'Play Everywhere' initiative. By doing so, the term 'Everywhere' will truly live up to its name, extending beyond Windows, Xbox, and cloud-based services. Will we see this become a reality in the future?

Steam deck is about par with a PS4 in performance so if they’re going release one at less than $500 they’ll have to be around PS4 performance.
They may release a PS Portable Pro with PS4 pro performance at the $750 mark competing with ROG Ally and Legion Go or more likely they might wait for the Z2 Extreme chip and release the PS Portable Pro with PS5 performance using upscaling. Maybe it can have the native PS5 performance while plugged in? Depends on cooling.
The limiting factor in all of this is thermals and battery.
It’s much better not to be running these handhelds at maximum power while on battery.

The easiest way to an Xbox Portable, is for MS to send millions of dollars to ASUS and have them make it. Seriously, the RoG Ally is that good, and the Ally X is even better. You throw in some Xbox decorations, and combine with next-gen chipset.... that is half the battle. All that is needed is for Xbox to handle the distribution and marketing, and porting all their first-party games. And for the greater MS to make the Lite-OS that can be used for it, and for other handheld companies (Lenovo, MSi, GPD, AYA, Valve...).
Yet, I don't think this is the best solution. Keep in mind that MS has already invested billions into the xCloud Streaming platform. And they're adamant about it. So maybe the best idea is for them to have a Halo Product for this technology. I know that Apple is out, Google is out, and Samsung maybe too. But we can get partners from the likes of ASUS, Motorola, or even Xiaomi. They can make a flagship device that can rival the Pixel, Galaxy, iPhone.... AND have it competitively priced, market the hek out of it, and each unit would come with controllers (in the box) that slide into the phone. Also throw in a 1-Year free xCloud Ultimate subscription with each box. Yeah, then you have what Sony failed to do back in 2011 with the Xperia Play.

    • @ekinteko
      @ekinteko 2 месяца назад +3

As for Sony, it make zero sense to go the route of a PSP-Phone. That ship has sailed. Now they can go the way of either a Pocketable Device (PS Vita Slim) or the route of a Portable Device (Valve SteamDeck OLED).
Going with a pocketable device has many advantages. You don't need to bring a bag or backpack. Just grab it heading out with your keys, wallet, phone. It slides in your jeans or pocket, games nicely, then tucks away. It is an outdoors or On-The-Go device. But the physics of it, means comfort is usually capped to 30mins game time, and battery life to around 4 hours. Thermal wise, it will have a big heatsink and passively cooled, but chipset throttling 3W-8W power. Performance wise this range limits us greatly. Using current technology we are only expecting around PS4 levels, but next-gen technology can push this higher to PS4 Pro levels.
What if we go Portable instead? I think that is the wiser move, as that seems to be what the market is going for now. And that would open up the thermal, price, performance, and ergonomics aspect. It is easy to game for 4 hours with the DS5 controller or the Valve SteamDeck. Thermals can help keep power fed 4W-12W-36W profiles, and stay warm with active cooling. Using older or current-gen technology can keep prices lower, and performance will range from slightly behind the XB1X to slightly ahead of the XSS. Or if using next-gen technology we could see it get close to a PS5 level of performance. Or more accurately, we can actually exceed the PS5 computational power, but we would make compromise of the graphics settings in resolution, dropping down (x4) from 2160p to 1080p, or (x2) from 1080p to 720p. On the smaller screen it would look just as good or even sharper. The major problem would be that this portable device would be expensive, and only come at the tail-end of the consoles lifecycle. So by the time the PS5-P becomes mainstream, the PS5 is already aged, and they're releasing the PS6. That might be okay for a bit, the concern is with the developers. As soon as these big publishers deem the PS5 a bit too weak, that also sacrifices the PS5-P as well, and we won't be getting those PS6 games ported to it.
The only way around it, would potentially be this: over-engineer the PS5-P in terms of CPU, RAM, nVme.... but skimp out on the iGPU. Have it 1:1 compatible with the PS6 in terms of computation, so that porting games is possible. The iGPU vs dGPU factor would come in the form of the graphical fidelity. We are talking native 2160p vs 720p (x8), 120fps vs 30fps (x4), Very High Settings vs Medium Settings (x4). It wouldn't be flashiest, but it would work, and you could have your PS6 experience either in your living room, or in your commute.
But this requires vision, and great planning.... I am not sure Sony has the leadership for such a business model.

    • @ekinteko
      @ekinteko 2 месяца назад +2

And to add even more nuance to this!
Any of the big corporations from Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo, Valve, Tencent.... or even Apple/Google/Samsung can do this.
And matching the computational needs is vital. The NSwitch is not a Home Console, it is a handheld, like the new2DS XL, and it is definitely NOT pocketable (3DS/PS Vita). I use this context, because the NSwitch cannot match the computational needs of the XB1 let alone the PS4. But it could have. Only if they used current-gen technology in 2016 instead of using old-gen 2014 technology. It is why we don't have any cross-platform games on it, outside of a few exceptions to the rule.
The lack of iGPU performance on the NSwitch could have been averted by optimisations. But even more importantly, it could have regained the graphical fidelity by the use of an eGPU. Remember the dock!
I think the ASUS ROG Ally makes a perfect case for this. On its own, it is playing XSS games at a slight/notable disadvantage. But if you have the xG-mobile dock, then suddenly your portable device becomes non-portable BUT the gaming performance shoots above the PS5 Pro.
I think the player in the best position to do this innovation is.... Valve. The original SteamDeck was supposed to be a showcase back in 2020 along with AMD's RDNA-2 and the new consoles of XSS, PS5, XSX. Due to limitations with stock, then scalpers, chip shortages, and pand emic.... we actually had the SyeamDeck delayed it's unveiling/announcement, and subsequently released in Late-2022. It's 2025 now and those consoles are passed their midlife cycle. So the next-gen consoles may be released in 2027. That is just in time for Zen6 and RDNA-5 release. Rumours say that Sony will be playing it safe and use Zen5X and RDNA-4 instead to ensure supply and low cost. That gives Valve an opening. Over-engineer the SteamDeck-2 in terms of RAM, nVme, and CPU. Have a modest iGPU. And release a Dock, sold separately, that houses a powerful eGPU that can match the performance of the PS6. This would allow their next-gen console to be able to get next-gen ports of games.
But that is what I think, what do you guys think ?

If they end up deciding to make a Vita 2/PSP 2 instead of a straight up portable PS5, then the only way it can be a success is if they get Rockstar to make a GTA game for it. Something in the style of the original GTA3, Vice and Andreas. Doesn't have to be as fully featured like GTA5/6 but something good enough is fine. The Vita died because there were very few games worth getting. The GTA stories on PSP were a great reason to pick one up. I bet if they made San Andreas Stories it would fly off the shelves and give developers an incentive to support the system.

In order to get PS5 level graphics, the chips need 200-300 watts of power. Currently handhelds run at 20-40 watts and barely last 2 hours (if you're lucky). There is one thing Microsoft could do to give their handheld an edge over all the PC handhelds. They could update the OS for Xbox Series to also run PC games (since it's Windows underneath), then put that on their handheld. Suddenly, you're able to play all of the Xbox games, and all of the PC games. Their handheld and home console would have all of that stuff combined.
Sure they would be competing with Steam, but they're all focused on putting Game Pass on everything, so at this point, it wouldn't matter. Something like this would give people the ability to have something they can sit down and play, with little setup, but if they wanna dive into the PC side of things, they can do that too. It'd definitely suck the people from two ecosystems into one that they are selling.
Not to mention that a lot of the backwards compatible Xbox 360 games are better ways to play those games than the PC versions. A lot of the PC games from the earlier half of the Xbox 360's existence are poorly written and very buggy.
As for Sony, I imagine that theirs would be a PS5 Portable, but they'll have to wait till they can make the chips at an affordable price.
To be real though, I feel like the reason why Sony is bringing their content to PC is that they wanna double dip. They see PC as a separate market. So later on, when their game from a few years ago isn't really selling that much, they go ahead and port it to PC since the architecture is identical. They're doing what Rockstar Games does.
As much as everyone praises Nintendo, if they did that, they'd probably get a bonus batch of sales on their games too. (NOTE: I'm not praising Sony. I still believe that Nintendo currently is making the better games.)

PlayStation saw portal backlash, then saw people making portable PlayStations and said, "we can make this too"
On the flip side, I can just hook my phone up to a USB hub, connect HDMI, Ethernet, mouse and keyboard, then have a good experience on GeForce Now, or similar services that capture mouse input. 9/10 times latency is an issue because people forget packet loss is a thing... Hence the Ethernet cable.

It would be a $400-$600 device just like a steam deck or rog Ally. Those devices play games natively. Some of them can even play like Spider-Man which is already a PS5 game. So I expect the price to wind up in that range and to have either a 720P or 1080P screen. Possibly OLED. 60fps. Perfectly reasonable for handheld.

I have said since the SteamDeck 1, handheld is the future. There is a DYI out right now in turning a PS5 into a tablet. Lenovo has proven that the Sweet spot for Big Handhelds is an 8.8-inch screen and the Switch Like Joycons (just Like Other $1000 units in the Wild).
    200 for the ps portal (+) 500 for a PS5 (+) around 200 for Playstation Plus Premium.
I can easily see a $1200 starting price.

From a hardware perspective, I'm sure a new PSP would be super impressive and I'm excited to see what it's like.. from a games perspective idk why I'd want it. Unless it's much smaller/lighter and has significantly better battery life than a Steam Deck with a somewhat comparable price point, idk if I can justify it. With the Switch, there's at least the incentive of (a large number of) exclusives on top of the price point, size/battery, etc. There just aren't a ton of PS-exclusives not on Steam that I want to play portably

Sorry but a real steam deck should be able to run any game on the steam network database and be 100% programmed to work every feature in every game! Also in steam half of peoples controllers and in game features don't work and you can't easily remap controller buttons and controls as steam can't be arsed in actually doing there job either! The deck is an underpowered pile of useless junk!

They shouldn't be thinking about making the current gen into a handheld but the previous gen. The Switch has showed that you don't need the latest and greatest graphics to be able to sell a lot of handhelds. Hell I would argue that the 360 and PS3 graphics still hold up in a lot of games such as Tomb Raider, I really wouldn't be disappointed if that were the generation they chose to turn into handhelds.

The question at the heart of this is "How many devices does your average consumer want to carry around with them at any given time?" I say 2-4. Watch & phone have become day-to-day needs... maybe headphones and then one other before it becomes cumbersome. Now will it be my iPad? My Switch? Laptop? Portal? Rather than a new hardware investment, I think Sony should start talking to Apple about taking advantage of some of the hardware on their next gen iPhones or iPads. Instead of a new Portal, maybe Sony should just buy out backbone and make their own hardware peripheral for current mobile phones.

Steam deck is PlayStation 4ish levels of performance.
So it's 1080p 30 or maybe 1080p 60 depending on the game If it's a very demanding game upscale would be required. But it is playable. (I now steam deck resolution is 800p but the performance is PS4 like)
Portably do I want more battery life are more power.... You have to choose.
    And it will be expensive.

I honestly think PlayStation can pull this off, they already had an entire line of successful handhelds that are still popular and relevant to this day (granted, mainly because of the jailbreaking community) but still, they have the experience to make gamers have that nostalgia of “remember when you were little and you could just play god of war on a handheld?”
I think Microsoft is far less experienced in this, but it’ll be interesting to see if PlayStation still has it in them to pull this off, cause, again, there’s the experience of doing it many times, they can deliver on giving gamers a somewhat watered down version of flagship games, the one thing that did suck about that generation is that it was littered with atrocious ports and games, so I think they both should have a standard on what gets released for their relative handheld platforms
