Yes, I've had this problem and it did baffle me. 4weeks into keto I was getting negative or trace results on the sticks. So this video has been enlightening, as I have and still am, losing weight. Also I have more stable energy, but still find I have trouble sleeping. I think I'm doing all the right things, so time to put the sticks away. Thanks for this channel it's really helpful

I started keto on December Second and I lost 5 pounds in two weeks. This is the first time that I lost to many pounds in short time. Before this it took me like five months to loose 5 pounds. In total I lost 10 pounds. I bought stripes to test ketosis but came negative. My cloth is getting loose and my body is turning nice.
Yes. Unless I am in the midst of a multi-day fast, the keto sticks show little or no ketones.. I have been doing Keto for going on 5 months, and have had a steady weight loss.. I miss that dark purple reading, but know that I am still on track..

Nothing wrong at all. Newbies never seem to be told there is a standard sequence of events. For the first two weeks, the sticks might show high ketones. Then at the start of week 3, our bodies switch from emergency mode to just being in the winter. So the sticks go light, trace or even negative. That's the normal sequence of events.
Yes! 3 weeks tracking all my food and carbs religiously and the past couple days, my urine stick is not detecting ketones, leading me to research and find this video! Thank you!

allmost continuous impulse to eat that once was there. I still find this to be remarkable. I feel very good and sharper mentally. Also pain in
my knee and shoulder have reduced
to low very low levels. Keep the protein intake down to 1 or two ounces or 25 to 50 grams. Any protein more than this is converted to sugars. Thanks again for your reassuring and informative video.

Same here, after 4 weeks of purple sticks they've literally all of a sudden changed to negative or trace and my diet hasn't changed, which is why I'm here.
After 4 months doing keto with strict net carb control, got my strips. Try #1 in the morning was 0.5, #2, 3, 4 too, #5 was 1.5 after my only meal of the day. The next day I was negative and desperate 🤣 I guess having been on intermittent fasting for 2 years got me into ketosis very quickly and my body mostly knew what to do with ketones already. WOW! My brother-in-law developed gout. He also went on a Keto diet and lost about 30 lbs. Not sure the MD that treated his gout thought to ask about this specific connection. Of course they address diet, exercise, but THIS, now this a a detail that is so useful for real!

WOW I really needed to hear this. My urine ketone levels dropped off. I also noticed that the PH levels in my urine had dropped a bit, (from 5.5 to 5.0) but I never considered it to be related. Thanks so much, I've only been keto since September 21, and bounced out of ketosis around the holidays. OMGosh!! THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH!! I have been on and off Atkins/Keto for about 15yrs now... I didn't always eat healthy, but until the last 4yrs I have not been able to lose as much or as fast. I can literally get into Ketosis in 1 - 2 days.. then all if a sudden... nothing. Now it makes since... because I was in Ketosis last week and then nothing... I didn't change my diet and went more strict. HOWEVER, I was having Fibromyalgia flare ups 🤦🏾♀️. I will stay on Keto, it has become a way of life. It is just so frustrating.

Thanks so much Doc. I tried the keto diet about 6 months ago and the sticks told the tale, I was in Ketosis. Then it seems I was kicked out of keto after 6 weeks, so I extended the diet to its 7th week but the sticks kept saying "No". I had lost about 25 lbs so I didn't worry about it. Fast forward to now, 6 months later, and I decided to do another 1.5 months of Keto. After two weeks the sticks are saying and have said from the beginning "No". I was so distressed and wondered why. Your explanation made sense and is most comforting. So I will carry on. I've always been a results oriented guy so I'll see if I go down another pant size rather than worry about the sticks.
BTW, the last time I was on keto and lost weight, I continued to lose weight AFTER I stopped. I had to tighten the belt notch once again after about a month after. Keto, for me, is the diet that keeps on giving.
There is one discouraging thing that's come to mind about this though... If your kidneys have adapted to not excreting the valuable ketones, that means your body is using them. If your body is using the clean burning ketones and not excreting them, then weight lose may be slowed down or stopped altogether. In my case, time will tell but if you'd like to comment on this bit of supposed bad news, please let us know.

Thank you for enlightening me because I was so frustrated that the ketone sticks show I'm no longer in ketosis since going carnivore. I have been full carnivore for 5 weeks and down 12 lbs. and I've been keto since last Thanksgiving and down 42.4 lbs since then. I feel amazing and have greatly improved my bloodwork profile since starting keto and will be retested at the end of September with 2 full months on carnivore. So, we'll see the difference in my bloodwork profile soon.
Omgosh! Finally a video on just what I was looking for!!! I started keto 4 months ago and a couple of weeks ago when I went and had blood work my uric acid levels were really high, but I have no painful joints or swelling and my iron is a bit low. This was very helpful information. I am 5 days into my keto diet and my urine dip sticks were showing 1.5 ketones but my keto mojo was showing I was not in ketosis. Now I totally understand why the difference in the two measurements. So now I look forward to the day the urine sticks do not show ketones.

No change in the urine analysis strip. 48 hours of fasting the glucose reading is 102. The strip analysis matched the 2nd one. Please let me know how am I doing?

6 days after I started the keto diet, now the unrine strips shows very low ketones. I feel more energetic, my brain focused and clarity increased. Less hungry. My allergies reduced alot. First few days at the start urine ketones reading was over 8 which very high. I had bad taste in my mouth and very dry lips and eyes. Joints and back pain. The key for me was that i keept drinking 350ml water every 2 hrs. 😊

Wow Dr Dan I can confirm info you provider here for us ! I started Keto in April 2021. In October 2021 I had some ketones in my urine (it was done by lab during regular check-up bloodwork )
and yesterday (March 15 2022) I see NO ketones in my urine results. Therefore I can confirm what you said is correct and I am glad that I can confirm with you (Dr.) that this is normal and
alright and I don't have to be concern about this outcome but rather be happy with my results.

I know a other story because that sticks. At the beginning of a ketogenic diet they show ketones. But with time, you dont see any ketones in Urin anymore. And thats because the body know how to use the ketones and not pie them out. From uric acid i hear the first time.
Yip!! I don’t suffer with gout but have an old hip injury that flared up so bad I’m back on walking aid. Could be a coincidence but I’ve been on strict keto for nearly 3 weeks now and today I stopped showing up positive for ketones in the urine! Jaw dropped after watching this video. Fingers crossed by hip pain now starts to fade with the uric acid in my blood. Gobsmacked

I've not gotten a negative, but rather, never getting well into a level of ketones/darker purple, instead a very pale pink, while completely on ketogenic food. I'm still losing weight so I don't worry about it.

Yes. I check it in my stripes. I thought my stripe was spoiled despite the strip hasn't reached expiration period.
Been doing < 50g carb for 3 months, weight quickly dropped from 250 lbs. to 217 lbs. - only intake carbs from a few grapes or strawberries a day so definitely under 50 carbs a day - feeling great. Decided to try urine test strips but they show no ketones. I know I'm probably in ketosis because the weight is still falling off - thanks for this explanation - makes sense - I was worried I was doing something wrong.

@@nefariousfox4891 I got to 175 but stalled. The Lee’s you have to lose, the less you can lose so don’t get bummed if it slows a lot when you reach a pretty lean state. I switched to carnivore for a few months and it was great.

If I had 50g of carbs in a day, it’d likely knock me out of ketosis. I’m on week two of keto diet(I’ve tried this diet once before and failed but now am determined) and have shot for less than 10g carbs a day. It’s difficult, but my body is responding incredibly well. Started at 261 lbs 15 days ago and am down to 242 now. Almost 20 lbs! Granted, I did weigh myself at different times: first weigh in was late evening, and today was mid afternoon. Probably a 3-4 lb fluctuation. Excited to get below 200 by November. That’s my goal.

Been on carnivore for 5 days. No ketones at all in my urine. I feel great and didn't have any sort of keto flu. I've been eating a lot of meat this year so perhaps my body was just ready for this change and adapted faster than others. Whatever is going on, I feel amazing!
I’ve been on keto for 9 weeks and where I was showing positive for ketones in my urine in the beginning but no longer do. However there is an exception, I alternate my fitness training regime between weights and cardio during the week. On cardio days (1hr cross trainer av HR 140bpm) I show a sharp rise on the keto sticks after training 4+mml. No change on my weight training days.

Dr Dan Maggs thanks for the reply. I’ve only used the sticks to date and looked into the blood and breath options available. I would really prefer a reliable breath monitor over the blood meter but will balance up the costs of ongoing use before making a decision.
Just out of curiosity I trained twice in one day yesterday. Weight training in the morning and aerobic cross training in the afternoon. Testing myself before and after
1 pre weight training negative ketone result on stick
2 post weight training negative ketone result on stick
3 post aerobic training positive ketone result on stick (high level)
Im not fixated on the results as I’m quite confident that I’m in ketosis and that the test sticks are just an aid.
If you do get the breath monitor, let me know how you get on with it. I couldn't get it to work for me a couple of years ago, but I'd love to know how others get on!

Been on keto for 2 years (male 67yrs. Old) sticks still show ketones for me and haven't had any joint issues in quite a while.
YES, especially going through the keto flu but still showing no trace. I thought it was my hormones as a woman, but I've been doing this for about a month now and the strips never showed it but I've had plenty of symptoms then coming out of the other end with clarity and weightloss.

Buy new sticks. Products say after 6 months discard, but they won't read properly after cpl months. This was case for me with several different brands

I was just planning out my videos for the next few months last night and I safety and addressing common concerns is going to be something that I will be making videos about before.
It would be really helpful to understand any specific concerns that they have around ketosis. All I’ll say for now is that it’s well evolved metabolic pathway that our ancestors spent an awful lot of their time in!
Secondly, it’s important to note that I’m just providing information rather than making specific recommendations about the suitability of this diet for people. I do plan to try and present a balanced view. This will all come out in the fullness of time through my videos and website.
I see a ketogenic diet as a tool within the low carb spectrum that is probably most helpful for people with obesity and type 2 diabetes. It’s definitely not going to be suitable for everyone - nor nessecarily should it!
Unfortunately, because I’m trying to make videos to match commonly searched terms in this space, I’m not presenting the information in a linear format that would make a lot more sense!
Anecdotally, my health is a lot better than it was when I was consuming a lot of carbs. Seven months of strict keto and I've lost 50lbs to become a normal weight again, I've lost ten inches off my waist, my visceral fat is 4 on a scale of 1 - 59, my gum disease has disappeared and I now have excellent gum health according to my dentist, my depression has lifted which has allowed me to ditch my anti-depressants, I sleep better, and my skin looks great. Ooh, and ketones repel mosquitoes so I had the summer free from being bitten to pieces in my sleep. It blows my mind that anyone would suggest that what I'm doing is dangerous compared to how I ate before.
Something I found difficult at first was shaking the idea that fat is bad and that if you eat fat, you get fat. I've spent my whole adult life avoiding both saturated and unsaturated fat as much as possible (and I was still fat and depressed). People who promote the idea that the keto diet is dangerous often seem to be stuck on the idea that fat is inherently bad for you. Either that or they're promoting a plant-based diet. Thanks to the Atkins Diet, I think there are also a lot of preconceptions that people on keto are forgoing their nutritional needs in favour of drinking bacon fat and eating nothing but meat.

Hi started Keto 7 weeks ago, been strictly sticking to almost zero carbs,,except through maybe a carrot or onion in a meat stew, otherwise no carbs and zero sugar. Bought the urine strips yesterday and yes was disappointed to see they registered clear.

I have been eating meat for a solid month. I bought keystones strips excited to see that I was on ketosis and burning fat!!! To my surprise I was not 😖😫 so disappointed. No carbs I promise and a minimal minimal amount of sugar. I am drinking a ton of Cascade no calorie no sugar flavored carbonated water. Could this mean that my body has just adapted and I’m still burning fat 😬
