Low carb, fasting and sleeping well are the 3 I’ve nailed! I need more exercise and have a plan to commence so that just leaves stress. I wouldn’t say I stress much more managing anxiety is my key target. Do I recall stress being linked to cortisol and then rise in insulin? Off to tai chi tomorrow so that’ll kick start those remaining two!
Also Mon - Fri no breakfast but love a weekend brekkie!

Took me few months. I didn't do it in one single stretch. Took a break for weeks or even months after each 7 to 10 kg of weight loss. My advice to anyone planning to follow the scheme: Getting back on the diet regime becomes tougher each time you break and hop off it.

Kelloggs said it. And all the other cereal manufacturers. No breakfast , no money. You’ll find most dietitians degrees are funded by large donations from nestle, Kellogg’s etc... and that’s why the traditional food pyramid favoured starches/manufactured foods.

      1. Low carb diet: not suitable with people whose their brains work hard. Brain need carb. Low carb diet kills brain productivity.
      2. Intermittent fasting: the same as above.
      3. Exercise - HIIT and weight lifting: OK
      4. Less stress: Difficult to do with low carb diet. Carb helps your body produce melatonin, which make you less stressed.
      5. Sleep more: Difficult to do with low carb diet. Carb helps your body produce melatonin, which make you easy to fall asleep.
      >> Believe me, low carb diet is a stupid way to lose weight. It's just suitable for who does not use much of their brains, like actor, actress, gymers, supermodel, athlete...If you are a banker, writer, data scientist..., forget low carb diet - it can ruin your life.

And please don't be discouraged, remind yourself that you're doing this to stay fit and to celebrate what your body can do. You're already doing great. Keep your motivations up by shifting your goals to stay active or stay fit rather than to lose or shed weight. Shifting my goals to staying active/ fit has worked so efficiently for me, it has completely changed my perspective about exercise.
"Exercise should be a celebration of what your body can do and not a punishment of what you ate." This statement helped me change my perspective. I hope it helps you both too.

    Hi Dr. Maggs,
As an insulin depandant diabetic, I have been gently nudged into these principles.
I have been prescribed a taster regime of weekly gym sessions by my GP. Now I am getting a liking for regular excercise and have added daily walking. My weight has dropped by 5kg(12lbs)from 90kg to 85kg in 6 months. I am now encouraging my whole family to join the local gym on a family membership !
WFH has reduced the stress levels associated with a long commute to work.
This has freed up time for a more regular pattern of sleep.
I have also significantly increased my fibre and veg consumption and reduced carbohydrates.
I can attest to all your principles.
Thank you for outlining them so clearly.
They can all be achieved slowly without any pain or difficulty.
Good luck to anyone embarking on this expeditionary journey of health discovery. You will reach your personal summit and be able to look back on a job well done. Ultimately you will congratulate yourself.
    Thanks for a great video.
    Best of luck to everyone.

Furthermore, Muslims have additional fasts on Monday and Thursdays each week throughout the year, and also the middle 3 days of each month, based on Prophetic tradition. Also, the manner in which Muslims eat, by always sitting, splitting the meal into 1/3 water, 1/3 air and 1/3 food promotes mindful and intuitive consumption. Also, small meals, snacks etc are more traditional with saturated animal fats being consumed very sporadically. Wonderful signs for those who truly reflect.

After a few day on this 20/4 cycle, it was like a switch was thrown. Now I don't feel worn out all the time and I have energy again. For months the bottoms of my feet were tender and walking was very painful. Even after a few days, the pain is reduced and I can walk around without any real pain. An awesome low carb breakfast or brunch:
Stir-fry 120g of frozen or fresh spinach with a teaspoon of light olive oil until wilted and and water is gone (2-3 mins). Add 3 eggs and scramble together with the wilted spinach (1 min). Serve in a small bowl and sprinkle with grated Parmesan for flavour and salt.
5 minutes prep time, only 360kCal, and you'll feel full and relaxed until dinner!

These are almost like 4 principles I learnt from a MOOC on brain health which are the following:
    1. Diet: low carb or intermittent fasting or Mediterranean diet
    2. Exercise: one that increases your heart rate to medium/high level
    3. Good sleep: enough quality sleep you feel refreshed after (for me it's 9 hours minimum)
    4. Meditation: to reduce stress and to rewire your brain

I always thought it was silly to think I had to eat breakfast. I never ate breakfast growing up and I was never hungry and I was never overweight until I turned 45 and became vegetarian and started eating lot of carbs for first time in my life. I got up to 150 lbs and had high blood pressure. Hypothyroidism and belly fat. That was 50 pounds more than I ever weighed in my life. Now on a low carb diet at 66 I finally got down to 130 but I’m still 30 pounds more than I should be. My family makes it hard to keep low carb. My Husband loves to eat and so does the other 6 family members who live with me temporarily. This Doctor knows what he is talking about. He motivates me to keep up the diet even when I have all these food temptations around me all day.

I completely agree with your observation about decreased hunger when eating a low-carb diet. It's common to feel like we should be eating more, even when we're not actually hungry. This can lead to overeating, which can stall our weight loss progress. I'm glad that watching my video helped you to realize this and make positive changes in your diet.

Great delivery on this subject! Weight training offers a double whammy to improve insulin sensitivity. Muscles make up the largest glycogen stores in the body and a good training session depletes those like you said creating short term sensitivity benefits. However, training increases those glycogen stores as your muscle mass grows, creating bigger stores for the dietary sugar on subsequent meals and days.

Most times I don't have lunch, but every so often I'll make a salad to-go for work. I have to say, When I was on a lower carb diet, and exercising, I FELT GREAT. I recently broke my wrist and couldn't workout the way I liked and got really upset and got a bit sedentary playing video games all day. When I realized how much weight I gained (Particularly around my waist) I got really sad, and it was a wake up call to at least start walking more often. I totally work at what I call Lo Carb/No Carb eating = always push to eliminate sugar. I do OMAD or ADF. My biggest issues are with walking - I have neuropathy and can go aboaut 6,000 to 7,000 steps before I start swelling. And the sleep/stress. I have insomnia. So, I may not sleep but I REST -- lay down, close eyes, listen to music - until I can fall asleep. I sleep maybe 3-4 hours max at a time. With stress, I am a teacher = high stress. So summer is a time to recharge and detox and try to mellow out before Fall starting school. I totally agree about the sleep loss affecting your DECISIONS. I journal to try to control my eating when I'm tired and not thinking clearly. REALLY enjoy your programs -- understandable, simple and direct, totally agree with your steps. Thank you. 1) I am on a low carb life style of eating. 2) I only eat once or maybe on rare occasions twice in a day. 3) Here is where I am bad, very very bad as I do not exercise - hate it, don't even want to think about it. However, now that it is starting to get a bit warmer I will start walking again, this is the one thing I don't mind doing. 4) I don't feel like my stress level is too high, I of course like everyone else do stress out at times, but I am a pretty laid back kind of person. 5) I feel that I get enough sleep, but I don't sleep at the night time hours, I tend to stay up late (very late, it is 3:30 am where I am now) however, once I do go to sleep I get in enough hours either all at once or broke up into 2 sleep times - I am sure you probably think I should change my bed time/ awake time and I will, I seem to go though a rotation on my sleep times. I do, however, get at least 6-8 hours. I have lost 20 lbs so far, but man it is coming off very slowly and that is a bummer.

Hi Dr Dan, your videos are fantastic, I love breakfast and after starting my breakfast, at times have struggled to stop eating. Recently (early Dec 2021) I have got over that by doing time restricted eating. Initially I just ate at work and also did did one 40 hour fast over a weekend. Then on annual leave (over Christmas period) I started eating for just 4 hours a day (10am to 2pm). Today I just finished a 5 day fast. I am very conscious with regard carbs in everything I eat now (thanks in part to your videos). One thing that really helped me get through my fasting periods recently was EFT tapping. This is because trying to restrict our eating does have a psychological element particularly when the hunger pains get overwhelming. Just wondering if you could introduce EFT tapping to your viewers as it may help some of them as well?

I adapted pretty quickly to 16:8 intermittent fasting, and I didnt find it very hard to stop eating after 8pm, skip breakfast and only eat after 12 noon. I lift weights several times a week in the morning and so far have lost around 3kg in the last 3 weeks. I have tried to add in more protein as I am worried about losing muscle. I think trying to gain muscle while losing fat is the hardest part of any type of fasting. The risk with 16:8 is not being able to consume enough protein in the 8 hour feeding window.

The result... 40 pounds down in two months and then another 8-10 pounds a month after that. Low carb diet with intermittent fasting reduces insulin and your body burns what it has.... fat!

Dr Dan Maggs thanks. Success is a result of understanding human physiology and take control of it back from what hijacked it.... insulin! I eat insulin free! It works.... 50 pounds more to go .... or a lifetime.... which ever is longer!

Watching this video again... I am down another 30 pounds. I have started training to run my first marathon. I have a 1/2 marathon in February & my first marathon in May. I am going to shed another 20-30 pounds in 2020. Maintaining the course on a low carb diet and have learned lots about what makes my body tick.

Btw, hate breakfast. Usually a kanji or vegetable juice (carrot, cucumber, tomato, etc & some fresh herbs blended with salt & pepper) or fruit smoothie, but can't eat anything.

Thanks for that, Dan. Breakfast - can take it or leave it. As for the 5 tips, I was a long distance runner for years, but could never really lose the belly fat. At 178cm, I could never get below 80.5kg. The reason was because of diet, I think. Lately, I have been focusing on all 5 of these areas, but I am just starting out. Not really sure what my weight is now, but it is at least 83.5kg. Trying to get to 75-77, so I will cut out all alcohol for 30 days (today is day 3), and continue w the other 5. My new bike just arrived, so off I go on a ride on my new wheels! 😊 BTW, I am almost 61 years old. 🤪

Best of luck with it, Dave. It’s amazing how many long distance runners do indeed struggle to lose the belly fat. Definitely one of the reasons we have to look beyond the calories in vs calories out theory of weight loss.
Be sure to let me know how you get on and be safe on that new bike! :-)

@@DrDanMaggs "Be safe on that bike." I live in Ho Chi Minh City, where that is absolutely the number 1 imperative - traffic here is crazy. As for getting on, I think I am being successful. I guessed my starting weight to be 83.5kg. It had to be at least that much, but let's say it was that. In one week, I went down to 80.8, as weighed this morning upon first getting up. However, I ate a bunch of nutsast night - oops! But feeling confident. Thanks for your reply, Doc.

What you said about decreased hunger is so true. My desire for food once I started training and eating low carbs went down BUT I kept telling myself "surely I should be eating more?" And as a result I would eat more giving my body more then it needed and stalled my weight loss. Watching this made me realise that. Thank you!

I have tried them all, Keto (4years)Perfect protein, low barb, calorie restriction (900cal a day/one month), and recently did NOOM for almost 6 months and gained 2 more pounds than I began. I do have diabetes and until recently was controlling it with 250 MG Metformin, but have increased when my latest Lab came back with an A1-C of 7.1. I walk an average of 10000 steps every day, do tennis 3 hours a week, and work part-time, I have a feeling that something is not working correctly with my liver any suggestion would be appreciated

Hello and congratulations Dan Maggs - I've done keto dieting before and was successful - lost over 40 pounds (from 216 down to 180) - what i didn't do was stick with it. I enjoy my cocktails - sweet ones too - I'm half Italian and pasta is just soooooo tempting - the alternative palm leaf pasta makes me gag. I like most veggies and eat them with most meals. I use intermittent fasting most mornings and am down from 206 to 194 in about 4 weeks. I'm not a fan of lots of fish although I do like salmon poached with some nice lemon sauce. So the whole process of feeding yourself just has to change and orient your head away from pasta, potatoes, rice, beans, breads, sweets and cereals. That I think is the most difficult thing about any diet. So once I get down to my ideal weight (which I calculate at 175 pounds) what kinds of starchy foods, if eaten in moderation, can I look forward to after that goal is reached?

Skipping dinner is better than skipping breakfast as insuline sensitivity is highest in the morning and lowest in the evening

I enjoyed this video and already practice these health and wellness tips as a life style. Breakfast IS the most important meal of the day...the revelation is breakfast is not limited to a time of day:) So if you break your fast (breakfast) at noon like I do i still consider it breakfast and am mindful of what i put in my mouth.

I was encouraged by this video because aside from the stress management i am following all your recommendations. I have not, however, completely dialed in my low carb diet and have seen my weight loss plateau. I have added resistance training in the last two weeks to my HIIT walking.
