- Earlier this year I reviewed the wilful but lovely Merason DAC1 digital to analog converter. This time its more affordable sibling, the Frérot and the optional linear power supply, the POW1.

Really great DAC from a great team and company

Outstanding review! Based. on your review, and others, I purchased a Frerot with a Pow1 in black I ordered it to replace my Bifrost 2/64. The Bifrost had great clarity, but was shrill on some recordings. The Frerot is different to any other DAC I have had in my system. It is extremely quiet with huge dynamic range. The music may be quiet with great clarity and then explode when a crescendo hits! Instruments sound real with excellent tone and pinpoint positioning. Thanks Hans!

You are right the Merason 1 is a fantastic dac ! I heard a couple of comparisons at a dealer between the Merason and another brand of dac which was about $4000.00 more I preferred the Merason hands down . Now I have to save up and sell off my old dac now .

I have purchased this DAC based on the feedback of Hans. Replaced my Holo audio Spring 2 L2. I like it so much. I can't really describe what is good about it, it just sounds good. I use it with the matching power supply. Never bothered to try the wall plug. One interesting thing that I noticed and would like to share is the very audible improvement in SQ with higher resolution files. In my previous DACs I never really noticed any meaningful improvement of 24-96 vs 16-44.1. With this DAC 16bit/44.1 sounds very good , it gets better with 24bit/96 and amazes me with 24bit/192. I find it is very interesting.

Great review Hans! Very interesting DAC. I am currently enjoying my pretty good Lindemann Limetree Network. Do you think the Merason beats the DAC part of the Limetree? Or just marginal? I do not know if upgrading to the Merason makes sense. Thanks.

I really enjoyed this review. The $2000 range is at the top of my budget. Is there another Dac that performs better at this price range and gets your system 1 rating?

If the POW 1 power supply already has a current filter, is it necessary to connect a current filter in front of it at all?
Do you have experience with this?

It might further improve the sound quality but is might also degrade it for too much filtering can make it sound 'lazy', slow.

I have LPS DC 9V 1A , is it good enough?
It might work but there will be a shortage of amperage. 1.5 amp is the minimum.
